Surprised people into this trash actually have friends! 😂😂
The details of the world tree (and most of the changes) are in the various UA playtest documents.
Doesnt he have 3 heads?
Loved finding out that William is a history nerd (though context showed it before) and has no time for social media! Between that and the obvious love for OLS and other 90s anime in Superquest Saga this only cements you guys as my favourite D&D podcast. My only question is, now that I find out that William loves tactical RPGs (another favourite of mine!), have you played Triangle Strategy yet? And what do you think of it?
Been meaning to play triangle strategy for some time. Got to pick it up soon so I can give some feedback on it! Most of my gaming time this past year has been shared between Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden ring.
Instead of doing the slipper bit at the end you could come up with clever tavern names that fit the episodes theme… basically slipper but but with a tavern instead.
Please don’t touch the rogue or warlock
Man I hope they fixed the monk
OH yeah.. No shark in D&D? FUCKIN LAND SHARK!!! BULETTES UP IN HERE MFER'S!!!!
1:13:03 Simple: because you recover Wild Shape on a short rest, and only recover spell slots on a long rest. If it wasn't this way, you would just burn all of your Wild Shapes for free level 1 slots, take a short rest, and do it again.
Excellent point 👍
Since it is already limited to once per long rest I don't see why you can't burn more Wild Shapes for a higher level slot at higher levels before level 20. Being able to double it at 20 would still be a good part of the capstone.
@@XanderHarris1023 Probably more of a "what is a wild shape really worth" sort of thing than anything. They pretty much equate it to a 1st level spell which is fair. So why should spending more equate to higher level spell slots, when not even upcasting a level 1 spell to level 5 can genuinely come close to matching what most level 5 spells can do? If players could just trade in all of their 1st and 2nd level spells for more 4th, 5th, 6th level spells per day, it'd be a balance nightmare.
@@Mrryn Wild Shape is capped at 4 (and that isn't until level 17) and you can't burn spell slots to gain more until you are out so max spell slot is 3 for most of the game. An extra 3rd level slot might be strong for level 6 so don't upgrade it until level 9. An extra 3rd level slot for 9th level character isn't overly broken, I don't think.
Rogues were done dirty. We got mostly useless or nearly never used options for cunning strikes and no upgrades. Like at least give us more dice for sneak attack. (1d4 per level or 1d8 every other) to stay on par. You can keep cunning strikes. The withsraw without opportunity attack was a core feature of swashbucklers. Also those aren't like "one die" costs, but 2 or 4 or to knock someone out, 8 (which you don't even have that many till level 16).
Vampires are actually weak to holy water, take dmg and stop their regeneration
you guys continue to be hilarious and besides the common interest in TTRPG's its the biggest reason why i fell in love with the show, feel like we would be friends IRL
I am a little sad that you think Rogues are so limited in the kind of characters they can be, but nothing I can really do about that and just gonna be a pirate over in the corner.
Oh I definitely don't think they're limited. I'm just not personally attracted to very many of the archetypes or the general gameplay of rogues in general.
Hard disagree with you guys on the change to Druids being able to speak while in wild shape. I think another reason why a lot of Druids don’t wild shape is because they realize that this is going to eliminate my ability to role-play and interact with everybody else at the table. You have to think about it not in game mechanics, but in real life mechanics, there is a person now sitting at the table who can’t “play the game” with the rest of the players. Love you guys! I look forward to your episodes, I have an hour drive to and from work everyday.
Yeah I think the experience people have with this aspect of wild shape probably varies widely from table to table. I think at our table it led to a lot more fun and hilarity. And more creative approaches to the social situations where the character was wild shaped.
@@ThedungeoncastThe way I always saw it, even with the 2014 version, you literally keep your mental stats as a wild shaped Druid. And there have been unique cases in the lore of abnormally intelligent animals (usually by some shenanigans with magic) that normally can't speak now being able to. Basically, Wild Shape isn't Polymorph - you are assuming the physical form of a beast, not becoming one. Plus you can always act like you can't speak as a Wild Shape to avoid talking to people because *they* don't know you can still talk. lol
Generic comment
My two favorites are rogue and warlock and I’m okay with the new stuff. I like it.
1:17 Never played one, but I've always had an idea for an accidental rogue. The character is just a normal dude with zero intent on being a rogue, all of your rogue features were roleplayed as absurd luck. Would take a bit of teamwork with the DM though. You disarm a trap by unknowingly activating it, but you bend over to pick up a penny just before the arrows would have impaled you. Your sneak attack is you tripping over a cobblestone, falling into an enemy, and accidentally stabbing them in the kidney. You don't actually know what you're doing when you pick a lock, you just stick in the lock pick and the lock falls open. Stuff like that.
Hey guys just wanted to say you are my favorite channel to listen to while driving to work everyday! Love all the work you guys do! for real thank you 💯
While I agree that paladins being able to smite only once a turn is good i think making it a bonus action is too far a nerf and clogs up paladin's bonus action. You didn’t mention that lay on hands is now a bonus action, which is nice as many didn’t use it as an action as they didn't want to give up their attacks. But now that smite is also a bonus action it just goes back to how it was before where people wont use lay on hands because they want to use their one smite a turn I think they should have just limited smites to once a turn like sneak attack.
27:51 I love this change to the fighter for so many reasons. 1: IRL reanactments show that sometimes in combat, if you have the luxury of another weapon, you'll swap to it. Knights of Europe often had a few with them at a time. A mace or hammer was light weight and could really make a difference in fighting another knight or heavy armoured foe. Swapping to a dagger. Swapping off your two handed weapon for a shield and side arm. Or using a spear with a shield. As unrealistic as it is, theres historical precedense for this. And.. Its fantasy. Why not let folks have fun 2) The idea of having multiple choices to deal with tactical situations. So you aren't always stuck with a sword n shield, you can swap to an axe or mace to fight undead or something. A spear to reach a flying foe, a two handed weapon for dps on a boss once the minions are dead. Or you lose your main melee weapon and now you have back ups. Rather them being screwed for the rest of the fight. Making fighting foes like black oozes and stuff more teneable. 3: The idea of seeing a heavily armed person with polearms sticking out of their backside, with a giant sword, axe n hammer. And one handed weapons all around their waste. Is so cool sounding and mad intimidating. 4: Story telling. Being a level 9 fighter and being able to use authentic battle styles is so cool. In a 1v1 in modern melee fights, pushing and shoves are very common, as well as using your weight or other ways to knock your opponent over. Using your weapon and yourself in ways that other ways not just typical. Like using a sword as a polearm, to brace it. Or an axe as an hammer. Etc etc. 5: It also means if you find a magical weapon you don't have prof in.. Doesnt hurt as much. But also means you can knock off an enemies weapon and scoop that puppy up and beat the enemy to death with their own weapon 😂😂😂
23:35 Wwwwoooooooooooo! Im a big fan of fighters I can't wait to see how I can build my fav class!
Agreed. I started playing them as a DM running a game with a small party to help them at lower levels and keep it easy for myself, but found I loved the class!
I love this episode already, William and Brian smiling alot and lots of laughs, its so great to see my guys having a good time! Helps put a smile on my lips. As for character creation! If and when you two do it, I'll go along with ya! And put it in the comments, hopefully other viewers would do the same to see what we all come up with
These three classes feel better than ever! Can't wait to try the new arcane trickster
Eh idk I like auto crit assassins. They should have kept that but not made it predicated on surprise.
Happy to have y’all cover these changes. I appreciate the view from a fellow 4e enjoyer. Also just finished Superquest saga is it still possible to buy the book? As far as content creators to collaborate with Ed Greenwood since he’s on CZcams now, or maybe Dnd Shorts could be a fun vibe.
The PDF will be purchasable once the backers get their copy!
1:30:54 Funnily enough, in the Playtest, it was Thunder damage
1:20:26 Whenever it’s been talked about it feels a lot more like, “Moving around in D&D is fun and we should be able to do it more.” Which is where my head is at. It doesn’t feel like they’re pushing the VTT. They’ve only talked about it a little. So at least for the game designers, it doesn’t seem to be the reason for more movement.
1:18:10 2 things. 1. You used to get a feature wear your beast attack counted as magical for overcoming resistances. Now it just does Radiant damage. 2. With this revision they wanted to make the Circle of the Moon more moon-like. You can cast Moonbeam and the new cantrip Starry Wisp while in beast form and now do Radiant moon damage with your beast attacks. The reason why Circle of the Moon is the Wild Shape heavy subclass is because of like werewolves and the moon. Moon is about shapeshifting.
1:07:18 Jeremy did specifically make the point, Druids are not the animal they are turned into, their form is simply shifted to be like an animal. Same reason there’s not to hit point pools now
Essentially making the firm distinction between Wild Shape and Polymorphing into a beast. Which I've always seen as there, considering you keep your mental stats in wild shape which you explicitly don't when polymorphed.
Loved the star wars rant
1:01:28 Oh… now I’m wondering, do you guys know that there’s articles about the changed stuff on DnD Beyond? It might help with these reviews.
Yes I figured this out recently. Thanks for letting us know though lol
I'm waiting for 6th edition with the hope it will continue to go back in the direction of 3 - 3.5 edition. 4th edition was an utter embarrassment made to fit with the neverwinter mmo. 5th edition got better but it felt like "Dnd for dummies".
We love 4e around these parts!
D&D will likely never return to the 3-3.5 days. At the end of the day D&D is a product to be sold to create value for WoC. With 5e selling so well, making D&D mainstream, they'll most likely stick to that formula.
@@placeholdername3818 Sad but true. WotC wasn't bad at first, but nowadays it just makes me wish TSR never sold it to them. If they were smart, they would re-release old editions. Everyone I know still plays 3.5 or 2nd edition but it gets harder and harder for people to get those old source books as time goes on.
@@broadsidedarth7801They have said, and I hope they are telling the truth, that after these revised books come out they will work on adding older editions to the Creative Commons.
26:19 Use an Object is not supposed to work for magic items. Now magic items use the new Magic action, which I love. It does way more than the old Cast a Spell action
15:49 Vaxildan in the first Critical Role campaign used it once. He disguised himself as a guy and snuck into a club. That’s the only time I’ve seen it used lol
Also on the whole campaign he used his surprise attack like 4 times
5:19 Last we heard, Rogues get all simple weapons and any Martial weapon with the finesse property. Could be slightly different now.
I hope they add "and or the light property" to that so rogues still get hand crossbows
@@ShurikenSean I’m more worried about longswords. I love longswords and Rogues could originally use them. It wouldn’t be a problem if they’d just give the longswords finesse like it should.
@@EpicRandomness555 I can understand them not wanting longsword to be finesse and them getting a d10 weapon to sneak attack with. but there were magic elven longswords that were fineese atleast that rogues could take advantage of so can see where your coming from
@@ShurikenSean It’s also just accurate to real world longswords. They are fast and agile. More than the rapier. Finesse should technically be taken from the rapier and given to the longsword because rapiers are not agile weapons. They’re as long as a longsword and almost as heavy but you only use one hand. You just jab and hope you don’t miss, there is no swinging those suckers.
Thanks guys for providing insight on the updates! Will you guys provide reviews on all the new systems that are coming out due to the OGL controversies from last year (ie DC20, Tales of the Valiant, MCDM, Daggerheart, etc)? Apologies if you've answered this in the past, catching up on the content from last year!
If we get the time I'd love to!
It is good to note that many of these changes are close to to the lastest playtest versions of the classes if you want more details on the changes. The pdfs are still available to download A weird thing with rogue playtest was they lost hand Crossbows due to a change in profiency wording Hopefully they still have them though as hand crossbows are iconic for rogues
Your talk about why you dont like playing rogues yourself reminds me of me not enjoying playing clerics. I love rogues, i love rolling crazy high stealth, outmanuevering and outsmarting enemies and hitting them where it hurts. But cleric i know is powerful and useful. But none of their abilities really speak to me, following a god is whatever, could be cool to me in a gane where everybody is following different ones. But the only cleric idea ive had is a changeling pretending to be an assimar and following a god of shapeshifters. So basically a rogue cleic anyway
I’m mostly with you. I like martials more than spell casters, and my favorite full spell caster is the Warlock. Cleric’s specific abilities don’t always seem as interesting. I’d rather do Paladin.
@EpicRandomness555 yeah I can understand that I definitely love spellcasters too, wizards being one of my favorite along with rogues and warlocks. As spellcasters like wizards can solve problems and do the outsmarting/outmanuevering like rogues but instead wirh spells. The cleric just doesn't speak to me that much with flavor or mechanics.
Really enjoyed it! Looking forward to more videos! 💞✨
I’m currently playing a changeling eloquence bard with the actor feat. With my changeling abilities combined with expertise in deception, advantage in deception if I’m posing as someone else and inability to roll lower than 10 in deception meaning without advantage, my minimum deception roll is a 21 safe to say I’m a living nightmare for the dm as soon as a social encounter comes up.
This is incredible, absolutely do more 🙌
I came here because of stranger things
I remember when the Moral Majority (aka. "Christian" Karens) started attacking D&D as devil worship. The AD&D DM's guide didn't help.
Mordenkainens tome of foes as a give away
It would be could to have that 3rd sublayer eventually because a 10th layer of hell. Literally the road to hell is paved by good intentions.
not the video i was looking for when I looked up hobgoblin lore. Seems just like a DM trying to talk to his new friend about DND, but that new friend doesn't really want to play, and complains about everything, and is distracted by spider man and offputting names and random things. I guess this is your style? idk, not gonna hate, just not for me.
If that's all your doing with wish your wasting that shit. There recommended wishes suck
I know I’m late to this episode, I’m catching up on unwatched topics. But this episode is fun and I appreciate the resources for DMs. I was really hoping this would touch on some of the tables in the DMG, specifically pages 142 and 143 for Intended use, History, Minor Properties, and Quirks because I really feel like they’re super overlooked but they have a ton of cool things to make even simple magic items individuality even if it’s just a shortsword +1. EDIT: They started talking about some of the loot tables in the later half but I’ve already written this all out lol Now, I’m just gonna talk about my personal thoughts on those tables for anybody else who decides to look here. The individual treasure, random hoards, and the item tables are really good at metering out rewards and perhaps give more intelligent monsters a bargaining chip to persuade the party to leave them be. Also the lower CR magic item tables give your party a ton of consumables without having to worry about permanent buffs to your party. And it is a good way to track an approximate value of how much treasure your party should be getting per encounter for where they are in their levels. Not to mention that your party will be able to get something from looting monsters even if they’re not typically creatures that would hoard valuables. Like an owlbear might cough up a pellet of bones, jewelry and shredded clothes as it dies or if you defeat it near its den these items are more just strewn about but not necessarily qualifying as a hoard (could even be carelessly thrown about the forest for your party to find and possibly avoid a conflict all together). Trolls might wear necklaces as bracelets and be willing to trade valuables with the party if they will just let the Troll be on their way if the Troll feels threatened or the troll might have a Potion of Climbing and skitter around on the ceiling just out of reach of the party. Etc etc, I like to roll loot before hand if I can and think of how the monster would interact with what adventurers would consider valuable.
