    1:18:10 2 things. 1. You used to get a feature wear your beast attack counted as magical for overcoming resistances. Now it just does Radiant damage. 2. With this revision they wanted to make the Circle of the Moon more moon-like. You can cast Moonbeam and the new cantrip Starry Wisp while in beast form and now do Radiant moon damage with your beast attacks. The reason why Circle of the Moon is the Wild Shape heavy subclass is because of like werewolves and the moon. Moon is about shapeshifting.

    26:19 Use an Object is not supposed to work for magic items. Now magic items use the new Magic action, which I love. It does way more than the old Cast a Spell action

    • @Razdasoldier
      @Razdasoldier Před 22 hodinami

      Specifically they missed that in OG 5e a magic item was not able to be activated at all with the use an object and Jeremy Crawford even confirmed that in no uncertain terms. Even a common magic item like a potion of healing could not be drank as a bonus action by a thief. It was odd and was one of the best fixes in the new thief.

    1:07:18 Jeremy did specifically make the point, Druids are not the animal they are turned into, their form is simply shifted to be like an animal. Same reason there’s not to hit point pools now

      Essentially making the firm distinction between Wild Shape and Polymorphing into a beast. Which I've always seen as there, considering you keep your mental stats in wild shape which you explicitly don't when polymorphed.

    1:20:26 Whenever it’s been talked about it feels a lot more like, “Moving around in D&D is fun and we should be able to do it more.” Which is where my head is at. It doesn’t feel like they’re pushing the VTT. They’ve only talked about it a little. So at least for the game designers, it doesn’t seem to be the reason for more movement.

    Hard disagree with you guys on the change to Druids being able to speak while in wild shape. I think another reason why a lot of Druids don’t wild shape is because they realize that this is going to eliminate my ability to role-play and interact with everybody else at the table. You have to think about it not in game mechanics, but in real life mechanics, there is a person now sitting at the table who can’t “play the game” with the rest of the players.
    Love you guys! I look forward to your episodes, I have an hour drive to and from work everyday.

    • @Thedungeoncast
      @Thedungeoncast  Před 21 dnem +2

      Yeah I think the experience people have with this aspect of wild shape probably varies widely from table to table. I think at our table it led to a lot more fun and hilarity. And more creative approaches to the social situations where the character was wild shaped.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn Před 21 dnem +2

      @@ThedungeoncastThe way I always saw it, even with the 2014 version, you literally keep your mental stats as a wild shaped Druid. And there have been unique cases in the lore of abnormally intelligent animals (usually by some shenanigans with magic) that normally can't speak now being able to.
      Basically, Wild Shape isn't Polymorph - you are assuming the physical form of a beast, not becoming one. Plus you can always act like you can't speak as a Wild Shape to avoid talking to people because *they* don't know you can still talk. lol

    • @justinmichael9043
      @justinmichael9043 Před 16 dny +1

      @@Thedungeoncast I love that. It’s like you’ve said before, creativity flourishes in a box. When you have a restriction to work around, it forces you to be creative and think harder about what would normally be simple. However, the game is a social game that is played in many mediums which is something that we can forget about as people who play with our friends at the dinning room table. D&D is played online, at conventions with strangers, and streamed for entertainment, so it makes sense to me to remove restrictions on something that is a core part of the gameplay in those situations: talking.

      @ShurikenSean Před 22 dny +1

      @@EpicRandomness555 I can understand them not wanting longsword to be finesse and them getting a d10 weapon to sneak attack with. but there were magic elven longswords that were fineese atleast that rogues could take advantage of so can see where your coming from

    • @EpicRandomness555
      @EpicRandomness555 Před 22 dny

      @@ShurikenSean It’s also just accurate to real world longswords. They are fast and agile. More than the rapier. Finesse should technically be taken from the rapier and given to the longsword because rapiers are not agile weapons. They’re as long as a longsword and almost as heavy but you only use one hand. You just jab and hope you don’t miss, there is no swinging those suckers.

  • @Mrryn
    @Mrryn Před 21 dnem +2

    1:13:03 Simple: because you recover Wild Shape on a short rest, and only recover spell slots on a long rest.
    If it wasn't this way, you would just burn all of your Wild Shapes for free level 1 slots, take a short rest, and do it again.

      Excellent point 👍

    • @XanderHarris1023
      @XanderHarris1023 Před 20 dny +1

      Since it is already limited to once per long rest I don't see why you can't burn more Wild Shapes for a higher level slot at higher levels before level 20. Being able to double it at 20 would still be a good part of the capstone.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn Před 20 dny

      @@XanderHarris1023 Probably more of a "what is a wild shape really worth" sort of thing than anything. They pretty much equate it to a 1st level spell which is fair. So why should spending more equate to higher level spell slots, when not even upcasting a level 1 spell to level 5 can genuinely come close to matching what most level 5 spells can do?
      If players could just trade in all of their 1st and 2nd level spells for more 4th, 5th, 6th level spells per day, it'd be a balance nightmare.

    • @XanderHarris1023
      @XanderHarris1023 Před 20 dny

      @@Mrryn Wild Shape is capped at 4 (and that isn't until level 17) and you can't burn spell slots to gain more until you are out so max spell slot is 3 for most of the game. An extra 3rd level slot might be strong for level 6 so don't upgrade it until level 9. An extra 3rd level slot for 9th level character isn't overly broken, I don't think.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn Před 20 dny +1

      @@XanderHarris1023 The other part of it is that it runs counter to design philosophy. There are other alternatives for how you can spend your uses of wild shape but you want them to balance each other out. Why use Wild Companion for a familiar or Starry Form when you can just blow them all, get an extra 3rd level slot, take a short rest and then just bank on one use of a subclass feature? Giving you access to just forgoing your wild shape uses entirely until 20th level where you are always guaranteed at least 1 every encounter disincentivizes you from other alternatives which isn't exactly healthy - the extra 3rd level spell is 99% of the time going to outweigh anything else you can do with your wild shape so now you have druids essentially by default before level 10 running around with an extra spell slot at one of their highest levels.

    Your talk about why you dont like playing rogues yourself reminds me of me not enjoying playing clerics.
    I love rogues, i love rolling crazy high stealth, outmanuevering and outsmarting enemies and hitting them where it hurts.
    But cleric i know is powerful and useful.
    But none of their abilities really speak to me, following a god is whatever, could be cool to me in a gane where everybody is following different ones.

    Rogues were done dirty. We got mostly useless or nearly never used options for cunning strikes and no upgrades.
    Like at least give us more dice for sneak attack. (1d4 per level or 1d8 every other) to stay on par. You can keep cunning strikes.
    The withsraw without opportunity attack was a core feature of swashbucklers. Also those aren't like "one die" costs, but 2 or 4 or to knock someone out, 8 (which you don't even have that many till level 16).
