This is ONE way to get free wood for a firewood business. Is it worth it?

There are many ways to acquire logs for firewood production. For me, in my area, this is one of the top ways to get wood for free. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. Let folks know you desire logs, and they will call. Make sure to answer and do it in a timely manner.

It's best to test in a controlled situation. In this video I test the new winch system that was installed on my 22 foot tilt bed trailer. This is a real world scenario pull that may need to be completed one day and it's best to test it now, not when I need it. Will the Open Road 6000 lb winch be up for the task?

Great job! This should help make a lot of firewood sellers job easier.
I have the same splitter with electric motor. It runs nice and quiet. I have had the same spring problem. I have solar electric so I sold my diesel sawmill and replaced with electric and heat my home with wood. It’s a good combination. Super Split is a great machine.
That they are. I've seen the electric one in action. Just as fast, but very quiet. I can see the draw to that model. Thanks for stopping in!
I wish I could do the chainsaw work I need. Just scared of the dang thing. I have an electric I use because it is easy. But it is just a baby chainsaw. I use a reciprocating saw for most of the small tree's I wrestle with. 😂
Being scared is pretty much being respectful of it. They are dangerous tools that need to be respected. Luckily, there is safety gear to help mitigate the hazards . Some good chaps go a long ways in protecting your legs. There are smaller gas-powered saws that are similar to your electric saws in power. I'd suggest starting there if you ever make the leap over to gas powered. If the electric ones work for you, just stick with them. All in what you're comfortable with.
I have no need for a bundler at this point, but I may at some point in the future. I've priced some of them, and as you said, some of them are pretty costly. I had a hard time wrapping my head around the prices of some of them. It just seems crazy to me.
Metal isn't cheap and a person who can weld well isn't either, but I know where you are coming from. When you add in electric motors and the engineering of it, I can kind of get the price to a point. This one is very simple and I think I could weld one up if I didn't already have this one. At the time I bought this one, I didn't have a welder yet or the very limited skills I currently have sticking metal together...
Just did my oil. Notice you had the same issue but cut away from it. Added 1 gallon. measures really high on the oil stick. You ran yours, like I did. checked and still high. Going to let some out soon. Wondering if you ran into the same issue. Know you have a different model tractor now and may not remember if 1 gallon was to much for yours also.
After running it the level came down and I was just slightly over the "full" mark. I ran it like that and had no issues. Hope that helps.
Nice little bundler.
Thanks, it's been a great addition to the wood yard.
Thanks! Great video!
Thank you!
My personal opinion (take that for what it's worth), is that it's ABSOLUTELY worth the little time and labor investment to have the free wood. I'd do that all day long!
It's a win/ win situation. Free except for my time. Helping some folks out as well.
I plan on making one
It's a huge help. Good luck on your build!
been running a 500i 3 yrs now and i run it hard ! i sell firewood so i cutt alot never has mine ever gave me a problem!
It's a fairly small part that only cost $8 so I'm not concerned about the saw. Thanks for stopping in and commenting!
yeah I think it must have been a faulty part but those motors are bullet proff..look at lumber gill video's she know about ever thing about these 500i
@mtnviewtow88 ill have to check it out. Thanks
For that to break while the saw is in use and not while the bar is being fitted is operator error.
Can you be more specific? I'm not saying I'm not at fault, but what exactly would you suggest caused it? I'd like to keep from having it happen again. This isn't my first saw. I have a 660 with more power than the 500i and have run the piss out of it. Have never had the adjuster break on it.
@@timbervisions the bar being incorrectly fitted , overtightened . And there is absolutely no pressure on that when the bar studs are tightened. It could be a weak piece of metal and broke when you fitted the bar and not noticed until you removed the bar . But its not a part that would break when the saw is in use .
@@timbervisions I.e when you fitted the bar you over tensioned the chain and it broke or the bar was not properly against the saw and sitting at an angle then you tightened the studs thus applying more pressure to the pin . I have however seen the actual pin coming away from the tensioner slide
@@richardsneddon2976 thanks for the input. It helps me and anyone who sees this comment.
@@timbervisions think about it mechanically. All it does is tension until the bar studs are tightened . Then all the force is applied to the studs when cutting that's it
IMHO it’s a part that breaks fairly often and they aren’t always the highest quality even right from stihl and I’ve seen quite a few break even on brand new saws. To me it’s a wear item the same as a rim sprocket and always keep one or two extra while I’m cutting. Nothing to really worry about
I can see the value in doing that. I may just stock up on some of those parts to I'll be covered if it's the weekend and my dealer isn't open. Good info, THANKS!
I would say faulty part. It happens but I dont think its a common failure. Looks like you sorted it out in short order. Now go put that saw into some trees. LOL I just got a 500i myself and am loving it.
It's a great saw, and I've been enjoying having it. Thanks for stopping in!
U can take a flat file or a Oregon chain sharpener and fix it happens to me a few times
Dremel style sharpener
I had started the process with the dremel. Seemed to be working to get it back into shape.
👍
It probably bad part I had it happen to my sthil 441 last time I ran sthil which was back in 2016 cheap fix
Ya, 8 dollar part. Not a big deal really. Just sad I couldn't use the saw anymore that day. That was the worst part.
Just finished a tree job and saw this. I would say its USER ERROR. Ive run pretty much every weekend tree jobs my ms180 261 362 462 661 and my old trusty 036 and ive cut LOTS I mean like ive cut I bet 10 cord of logs this summer. IVE used these same saws for the Last 3 4 years and I just keep them clean and sharp and maintained. ZERO issues. If your brand new 500i that costs 2000 bucks is broken in the first tank I would say its the person using the saw. I Would NEVER Noodle with a saw. Thats is to me abuse. I understand it can be done if you have the power and the chain is razor sharp but to me its HARD on a saw. All im saying is If AND When I buy a 500i just to have and try its really not needed but I will run it for years and years with NO issues I bet. My buddy just bought some new Husk 455 and he said the chains flying off the bar is bent the saw wont stay running bla bla bla... Again I feel CONFIDENT its USER ERROR. I understand that sometimes you have issues but abuse and user error is MORE to blame then the WELL thought out product that is the BEST money can buy....
Thanks for the very lengthy opinion. Have an awesome day!
How is noodling with a saw abuse? It’s the same as burying a bar in a large cut. I’ve got saws with hundreds of hours spent just noodling and have never had issues, a saw is a tool that’s made to be used not treated as if was as fragile as glass. And in my experience unless someone straight gasses a saw 90% of crib deaths in saws are 100% on the manufacturer. I’ve seen chain tensioners snap instantly due to poor materials, bearings seize in the first tank, I’ve torn brand new saws down for porting and found bad bearings or seals, I’ve even taken apart a few saws that came right out of the factory sealed box and found parts installed improperly. In this case I don’t see how he did anything to break the tensioner especially when they are a cheap wear item that will break over time and I’ve seen them break this fast.
Is it made in Germany?
That's what the sticker reads on it...
@@timbervisions good, my guess is you had the bar nuts too loose and you were maybe running a skip tooth chain that tends to be rough on the saw and the jarring fatigued that part instead of the bar nuts taking the load. After two tankfuls it is not broken in yet and you won’t be running it at high speed yet. It’s a good saw.
@D-B-Cooper oh I agree, it's a great saw. I was running full comp yellow stihl chain though. Couldn't been the bar nuts though, I agree. She's a ripper, gets better every time I grab it. Thanks for stopping in!
How much did you cut off the pto shaft
Oh, that was a few years ago... around 4 to 5 inches? I'm pretty sure it's in a video somewhere
The most important is that you were not injured. Seems suspect to fail on a new saw. I wonder if parts manufacturing is out sourced to places like China these days?
I'm not sure...
The same thing happened to a very experienced tree guy I know with a new 661R & 32" bar. The adjuster broke and ended up bending the chain, and tore the chip deflector. Fortunately, the dealer took care of it. Good luck with your awesome saw.
Thanks! Guess it can happen to anyone.
that bar tensioner usually breaks when the bar is put on with the holes not lined up - it pushes the tensioner in and breaks it
You're saying the pusher wasn't seated in the bar hole correctly, then when I tightened it, that broke it? That could be, I'm not sure. Thanks for the input
Great video btw 👍
Thanks!
Would be good to see some stats from Stihl on what parts have broken on near new saws
That would be interesting
How many hp is ur pto?
The pto hp on the kioti CS2520 is 18.5. Had to take my time, but it will get it done. The main thing is to set the slip clutch to the pto HP of the tractor it's being used on. Hope this helps!
I also had that problem on my 460. I believe that happens when your chain gets a bit old
Thanks! Great insight 👍

Bud............you scored a home run on that log!!! But if you fast forward to about the 16:30 mark in the video, unfortunately you'll see that you've got a big dip in the middle of your log. LOLOLOL.
HA, very observant of you Jeff. SMH
@@timbervisions Did you actually get the "pun"?
@@JeffGeorgalas I did Jeff. That "Dip" sign has been the topic of comments before. HA
It is helpful that you are mechanically inclined. I'd bet the part was faulty. It is disappointing when stuff breaks. Good for you digging into it. Thanks for sharing.
Luckily it was an easy fix. Thanks for stopping in!
Darn Bud, I am SO bummed that this happened to you with your new saw. I wish you wouldn't have spent any money on replacement parts though, because YOU ARE under warranty. This is the first time I've personally seen this happen on a 500, so I don't think that it's a common thing at all. I'm guessing that your issue was just a freak anomaly, and guessing that it won't happen again. I seriously doubt that you did anything wrong either.
It wasn't a big deal. I didn't want to open that can of worms to warranty this. Especially when it the part cost $8. She's been cutting just fine since. Ripping through that wood!
@@timbervisions Good deal. I hope that saw gives you many years of trouble-free ripping!
@@JeffGeorgalas she's been waking up a bit more. I've been really happy
Why did you have to buy it? Isn’t it under warranty?
I'm guessing that is was, but for $8 I'm not going to mess with it. Thanks or stopping in and commenting!
Good job Bud! You're setup now! That rig will look good on it's way up to the U.P.!😂
Ha!
Good idea on moving the brake controller out of the elements, even though it didn't work. Also, group 27 and 31 are the most popular for boat use. Good choice.

How long is your trailer. I am looking at a28’ deck over. I want to haul my tractor and my grader.
This is a 22 ft. 6 ft stationary and 16 ft tilt. I looked hard at a deck over, but the approach angle is pretty steep and unless you have wireless remote, you gotta get out and lower it down at that angle. That's didn't appeal to me personally. Best of luck!
@@timbervisions the one i am looking at doesn’t tilt. Has ramps. My other option is building my own. With a 9’ hydraulic tilt
@puddlejumper3534 ah, got ya. I had to go tilt as I use it to haul my zero turn as well. Would be a trick to hit those ramps just right. If you're doing equipment only, deck over is the way IMO
You could have used a strap with a hook, using the tractor, turn the log on it's side, then cut it. No live edge but some real nice looking boards
Sam, I've seen that technique. It seems to work pretty well. I've also seen guys use a winch and hook to turn those larger logs in a similar fashion. Turning from the log stop side, up and over the log. I didn't have a strap with me, so lifting and rolling was my best option at this time. Thanks for the input. Always good to hear of different options.

Even my old 026 can be a gas hog. Depends on how hard you push the engine. Nothing cuts like a Stihl... Except these Holzfforma clones. I myself bought a G111 for small stuff. It really loves to eat wood.
the 026 is a turd.
I've heard those little 111s are beasts.
congrats...you got yourself an awesome saw...thumbs up !!

I’m sure you’ll love it but I’m wanting a 462. Seems to be the ideal power to weight. Plus I’ve heard those 500’s are thirsty. I’m almost positive I’d love it if someone handed me one though lol. Hope the saw treats you well
It's thirsty, but not as bad as the 660 clone. I think the 500i tank is smaller as well, but I've heard great things about the 462 as well. I did consider it as well, but after I picked up the 500i, I had to have it.
Another good video, thank you. You seem like a regular guy, but yet you can do all this amazing stuff. Nothing regular about you. I wish I had your skill set. I hope you get your planer.
I love learning new things. It keeps me going.
Tim, I like how you make mostly squares with your splits. Most everyone else ends up with triangular shaped splits. It’s because they always keep splitting each split in half with the barkside down.
Thanks, they work best in the bundles.
Wow! You’re not making any money if you charge that. Those are pre-Biden inflation prices; or actually, more like early 2000’s prices.
It's all regional to honest with you. I do charge less that the tree service guys locally, but not by much. Each area has it's prices. I do OK with it, but don't make a living doing this either. I have a full time job and pick these up on my days off. Thanks for stopping in!

You'll have that lmao. I'm there with you. Did I give the same answer? Lol
Good video Bud. Hope you're digging the new saw even if it was just for a few cuts. Hope it's left you with a good impression so far!

My coworker has just bought one as well. He really likes it. He is a arborist and he uses it a lot. I was thinking of he’s bigger saw and looking at the knock offs.
I don't regret buying the knock off G660. Just keep in mind to check bolt tightness and maybe loctite some of the important ones. It's been a good saw and cuts really well. Just the weight of the thing is the only drawback. Good luck!
You may be behind everyone else, but you are ahead of me. I have an older 066 & a newer 660 and I love them both. I have 5 other saws, but none are 4 or 5 series. I wish I was you. You have all the toys. I enjoy watching all your videos. Thank you for taking the time for our benefit. I like how you use the chain brake so frequently. It is a worthy safety feature. Stay safe out there.
Those old saws are awesome too! Heavy, but really good saws. I try to be safe so I can go to bed each night the same way I woke up that morning.
Great video, very well explained. Considering getting one of these and your video will definitely help me make the decision. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful. Good luck on your decision!
Did the 2-inch spacers work pretty well to stabilize the tractor. I just ordered a CS2520 and noticed several people putting rear wheel spacers on. Just wondered if you thought 2 inch was wide enough vs 3 inch. Did u also have Rim Guard in the tires? One other question: Is it an issue to have the rear tractor width wider than your front bucket or rear implement. 2 inch spacer would put me at 50 inch and 3 inch spacer at 52 inch. I have 48 inch bucket and 48 inch box blade.
It helped with stability enough I could feel it. It seemed to be enough with 2 inches. I had a 48 inch tiller and it still worked out on it ok, but the tiller was behind the wheels tilling so keep that in mind. Best of luck!
