So.... no backyatd squirrels...
The easiets solution is to not own any dogs. Dogs aren't indoor pets. They are an invasive species and opportunistic mutated scavengers. They are literally designed to just roam around outdoors and eat rotten cadavers.
My four dogs have been having a GREAT time with their food toys! I learned that one got overwhelmed and I needed to give her an easier toy (and only one.) another dog of mine loves a big football styled eating thing. All of them have been having a great time. Thank you!
Hi, this was a great video and Fen is so good. Do you have any advice for a reactive dog. My Border Collie is almost 3 years old, he was a rescue at 12 weeks with no socialisation. My problem is people cannot stop and say hello to me or him, they cannot even as they walk by us say "Hi" because Monty will lunge and bark. He also lunges and barks at other dogs and has no friends other than our other non BC dogs. Since I got him I would certainly watch his body language, increase the distance between him and his trigger(s), I use plenty of high value food but once he's in the barking/lunging zone he's not interested in any food ni matter how high value it is. We cannot even sit outside a coffee shop in case someone says hello causing him to react and heaven forbid another dog might be there too. If you have any advice on this I would appreciate it. Loving your videos so much. Many thanks.....Tina (Dublin, Ireland ☘️)
Thank you for such a great video, sharing all those options are very interesting, a lot of them I didn't know, great idea about the toy to teach the dog to go inside the crate!!
What if she goes crazy when people just get in, without knocking? Do you do the same proccess without knocks? My brother in law lives with us and she goes craaazy when he gets in (even if she sees him everyday), but he doesn't knock since he lives here. She always pees also when somebody gets in (reother in law as well. With everybody except me actually). She's a rescue and I also think she was a bit traumatized caus' she pees when we speak loudly as well... Do you have any trick for that ? Thank you :)
In my country meat for dogs cost 2 time less than for humans i wonder if it edible cause i eat around 1,3kg meat per day and that would save me a lot of money, soon gona order the pack
Thank you! Love this. I’m a cpdtka and i use this to share w ppl
This is awesome!! Thank you so much
I can't play this game..bcz she always come after me WHENEVER I hold a treat in my arm.She ll never leave🤧🤧
I've been trying the hold and be boring option to try and get my puppy to drop it. She's tenacious!! She's happy to just sit and chew all day as I hold her toy 🤷♀
Fantastic enrichment ideas Sarah your incredible thank you very much for your time you take to create your incredible work keep it coming! ❤ lots of love ❤️ xxx
You're incredible Sarah lots of love to you and the pups ❤️ xxx
This was such a relaxing video to watch and listen to (and obviously very informative)!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Love this sniff spot!
Heck yes!
looks like fun. do you do any dog sports or herd?
Working our way up to it!
Nice
Okay, I know this video is old, but any favorite places to the get Happy Howie's roll in NoCo? Your videos tipped me off to them, and they're my dog's #1 fav treat, but I've had a hard time finding them lately, and would love to not have to lean on Amazon to get them!
Honestly the best place is directly off of their website: www.happyhowies.com/product-category/premium-meat-rolls/ - especially since they are a small business, this really helps them out if you order directly from them!
Struggling with this! My pup will go back to the box and look at it then me. But won’t get back in the box!
This is a hard one! In that case, I would help them out. Invite your pup to get into the box by tossing the treat inside of it. Make sure your pup is physically able to get into it! You may experiment with using shaping to get her to stand on top of something first, to build up her confidence with putting her paws in/on something novel. Then come back to the box.
How much do you reduce the regular meals when giving them so many treats?
It depends on what I'm doing with them. A lot of the time, I am using a portion of their actual meal to do training. If I'm doing something that requires higher value treats (like using chicken, cheese, etc.), I'll keep track of about how much I'm giving them so I can take out a portion of their meal for that day. I try to when I can opt for nutrient dense treats though so this acts as a healthy substitute for their lost portion of a meal. I'll try to make a video about this!
My 10 mo puppy refers excitement from playtime as reward over food; however, she jump and nip us every time we play with her. Any advice on how to stop her nipping us?
This is meant for younger pups, but there are some helpful tips in it: czcams.com/video/yyvS92Z7XZA/video.html
Great ideas, thank you!
Be careful with bully sticks and bones. Always use a bully stick holder, a lot of dogs choke on the large end pieces. Bully stick holders also make it easier for them to hold.
Agreed! I like this one: amzn.to/3Uaa3oy
Also, how about knocking or ringing after disappearing outside for maybe 5 minutes (sit on the steps or something)? I was a UPS delivery driver for a few years before I moved on to tractor trailers. One of my dogs was around in those days and would get excited at the sound of my truck, then at any UPS delivery truck. Then when I retired we moved quite a bit away and now when the UPS, FedEx or whoever comes, this particular dog trained the new dog that those noises are exciting and thus the entire house needs alerted to this exciting event. It's extremely frustrating.
I totally get it. Our dogs barking at these things is such a natural response, it can be really difficult to "get rid of it" entirely. However, we can teach them to turn it off when you ask them to. I made a video on how to teach this, if it is helpful: czcams.com/video/awDKs-SlSPQ/video.html
I'm just stopping this for a moment. Isn't it possible that once they've become conditioned to a treat when the doorbell or a knock occurs that they will get amped up merely by the thought a treat is about to happen and start barking because of the excitement?
Yes, this is definitely a possibility. In that case, I would pause this and make sure that I am only rewarding the dog when I get quiet from them, even for half a second. Build this back up without the barking.
Your dog looks a lot like mine! Blonde border collie!
Love it!

Thank you!
My pup, around 4 months has started to have these out of control biting fits out on walks. After he goes number 2 he feels brand new and it starts as playing. He gets pretty aggressive though. Any advice?
Puppy zoomies! I'd bring a tug toy along with you so he has an appropriate outlet for this energy surge. High value treats as well if he isn't interested in the toy, but I'd try channeling this into a mini (appropriate) play session
Super helpful video!
Ingenious! We had a go at scratch board training my dogs on the flat boards and we had some good results from first session but the outer claws don’t get too much action.
Ya I have found the rounded edges to be helpful!
Thank you for your informative video. This video is informative and helpful. You dog is one lucky pet! The only toy I would not recommend is the bone shaped, dental/treat toy. I bought this and within 6 minutes my dog removed the end of the "bone" treat and chewed the plastic thread. The toy cannot be used any more.
This is a great note for others, thank you!
hello, thank you for the video ! you mention using two different harnesses, one for positive training and one for when need to put a harness on him, but my 8 month old puppy just will refuse to wear any harness at all, even the ones that don't go over her head . in that case, should i just focus exclusively on the more positive, more time consuming method? (also, is 8 months old too late to harness train? she is very stubborn and reactive, and i'm just about to start trying this new method) thank you for your time !
Great question! Yes, in this case, I would opt for the more time consuming positive reinforcement route with building positive associations with the harness. Otherwise, I think you may risk making a worse association with the harness!
I am going to try some of these ideas when I have knee replacement surgery and I can't walk my dog.
Love it! Best of luck
Is the clicker great for families where all members need to command the dog? We all have very different voices.
Yes, it is great for the exact reason you mentioned. Then the dog doesn't have to learn how everyone says a marker cue, the clicker will sound the same with everyone!
Can you do this without a clicker? Cuz im in another country and havent seen one anywhere...
Absolutely! In place of the click, instead use a "yes" or "good" word as a marker cue instead.
I’ve tried some of these in the past. The problem is that my Labrador likes to work smarter, not harder, so he just grabs whatever container he knows the treats are in and flips it over. If he can flip it and have it fall with enough force on the floor, he can outsmart any puzzle toy very fast, even if he knows how to complete said toy the correct way.
Great! Time to increase the difficulty and keep them on a rotation. I'd also look at mixing other enrichment games in to keep things interesting for him :)
@@sarahcertified Oh! Thank you for replying! I will definitely try that!
This is awesome! Thank you
Awesome!💟
Great video. Thank you for all the ideas!
Immensely helpful!!! Two houns/great Pyrenees/lab mix puppies here so we really need the help!
I love this, and this worked perfect at my house. My dog was a star! But I have a boarding barn where I work at with Horses and customers, and when he’s in the tack room and customers walk in and out of the door, without knocking, he gets very anxious. Often times he’s lying right by the door when people come in or he’s back in the corner. But definitely if it’s a new person he hasn’t seen he will charge the person and the door when they walk in. Familiar people he just stays where he is. What can I do about this?
Lots of management in this situation mixed with some counter conditioning. Putting up a crate, ex-pen, or tether station will be helpful so your dog can't practice charging at people that are walking in. Then instructing people he doesn't know to ignore him, while you have some high value treats ready to go. Person walks in equals he gets yummy snacks from you. Person goes away, snacks stop.
Without much detail, I just wanted to say I needed to see this video today. Thank you.
Oh this makes me happy!
Stupid video, wasted my time, 6 mins still could not teach the dog to nod it head!
This is well done, but please remove that background elevator music, makes me feel like I've been put on hold
Hah, noted. I've since taken the elevator music out of my videos.
No offense but if any dog is so picky about food…let them not eat for 1 day and the next day they would eat whatever you gave them.
How about letting you not eat for a day and see how you like without a voice bearing in mind these guys don't have a voice and can't convey how they feel so if you don't feel a dog should be fed every day or whenever they want food or a certain food then maybe you shouldn't own them 😢 rant over keep up the brilliant work Sarah xxx
@@ryanmoodyandlolathepugandn7956 Please. I’ve gone a day without eating and one day doesn’t kill a person or an animal. Just makes them appreciate food that much more! Toughen up a bit.
@@ryanmoodyandlolathepugandn7956 There’s a big difference between discipline and abuse.
I would agree to an extent for meals but for enrichment and/or training... some dogs have low food motivation. It's fine to use something high value so they can get stimuli/feel motivated to learn something.
I just think your wrong on this so not going to entertain the topic no more we all have different opinions i just pity your animals 😢@dorothypage7410
Just ordered one for my 6 yr old staffy/boxer mix. High energy, high prey drive. We can go for a 7 mile walk, and she'll still have a ton of energy, so I hope this tires her out 😂
Yes! Best of luck! Definitely incorporate training into this!
Excellent. Love it!!
I LOVE YOUR DOGS AND I LOVE YOU FOR HOW NICE YOU ARE TO THEM ❤️❤️❤️
Aw thank you!
hey thanks for the video ? did you say you use ham as a treat for recall ? I'm gonna try this! just one question what happens when they are done being trained does that mean you don't give her as many treats but she will still follow and listen to you , won't she still be expecting treats every time
Good question, I need to make a video on how to start fading off on treats in training. Essentially you want to vary when you are offering treats as a reward over time, and input other non-food reinforcers in that place. We also increase criteria so the dog has to do more for one click and one treat. All while working on teaching the dog they can work for access to those non-food related reinforcers. For example, continuing forwards on a walk, toys, access to a person, etc.
@@sarahcertified Im kind off and running I trained my dog total recall , I just weened her off the treats for reward , she eventually just started listening to me every time , your video did help get me going though in the process
