I make videos that interest me, especially intriguing stories that may not be that well known. Rock climbing out at Stoney Point is often a topic too. I also do a little acting and some of the music videos I've appeared in can be viewed here.

King Gillette - And A Short History Of shaving
The traditional straight razor is not used by barbers anymore, at least not in California.
Barbers in California use a "safety" straight razor to give shaves. When traditional straight razors were used there was a strap of leather that would hang from the barber’s chair called a strop (rhymes with drop). And the straight razor was “stropped” between every shave-dragged back and forth with the sharp end trailing the direction of the blade.
Strops won’t be seen attached to barber’s chair anymore (unless one is left as a relic to the past). Stropping would clean and help keep the blade straight. But stropping is not sharpening. Sharpening is achieved with a wet stone.
You can watch this video of stropping being implemented. People do use straight razors for their own personal use, and need to strop them after all:

I saw this guy laying don on top of Summit Boulder. He was laying near the edge like he was asleep. I was on the top of Skull Rock. I waved to him but he didn't wave back. I watched him for another minute and he made some movement so I assumed that he was okay. I resumed my climbing around Mommy's Boys. Then, about 20 minutes later when I heard the helicopter roar in I immediately thought it in...
The Chemosphere

The Chemosphere is one of the most iconic homes in the world. The architect was John Lautner, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. A question that I came across when making this video was whether the lift was a funicular or a inclined elevator. This is what I found: An inclined elevator is distinguished from the similar funicular railway in that its cars operate independently whereas funicular...
The Lankershim Monument (Part 1)

This video is about the Lankershim Monument, which in 1978 was designated City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #181. Few people are aware that there is a Lankershim Monument. Even people that live in the area don't know of its existence. Errol Flynn knew of its existence. Are you curious yet?

Pet Memorial Park and its history: m.czcams.com/video/93jP01fjag4/video.html&pp=ygUSTGEgcGV0IG1vcnR1cnlwYXJr If you look at other videos on this memorial park you might see the mausoleum with a brick frontage. They decided to restore the mausoleum back to its original exterior (I think the brick frontage looked great). Also, notice the memori...

The Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel

This hotel has many stories from its colorful past. One story regards a long term tenant of the Knickerbocker, William Frawley, and whether he and Vivian Vance got along. Although the two actors worked well together, they greatly disliked each other. Most attribute this to Vivian Vance's vocal resentment of having to play wife to a man 22 years her senior. And she often referred to Frawley as t...

There is a Pink Lady Of Malibu Restoration Project that can be found on Facebook which seeks "the repainting of the pink lady and that it be declared a national landmark of Malibu and the era.” I think it will surely never happen for the same reasons it was painted over originally. The magic, daring and creativity is best remembered as an ephemeral creation that appeared and was lost in six day...

Above Chatsworth Nature Preserve. Some Points Of Interest
Had someone, who lived in this area 100 years ago, been still alive and seen this same area, he/she would've been completely astonished at how much change Woodland Hills has gone through and how many cars are on the roads now. A hundred years ago, there were far fewer cars on the road and the 101 freeway has yet to be built. Great historical tour.
Wow. Since 1985, I've lived in the West Valley (Tarzana's Melody Acres, Woodland Hills on Topanga, Now near Pierce College) and you've taught me so much... and I am always curious about our local history. Thank you. These videos are wonderful. P.S. A month ago I learned about Twin Lakes and found Mayan Drive. But I had no idea about the old roads you walked. Crazy all the history I'm still learning about.
Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you've enjoyed my videos.
I lived in Woodland Hills from 1958 to 1968 and I really like your history videos such as this one about Encino and also the videos you made about the history of Woodland Hills and Tarzana. Things were really different in the 1950s compared to now. There was no Warner Center. There were lots of pumpkin fields where buildings are now in the area east of Topanga Canyon Blvd between Ventura Blvd and the Ventura freeway. Calabasas was not built up much at all. Fortunately Stoney Point looks the same although the areas surrounding Stoney Point has changed immensely. The 118 freeway did not exist at all. To get to Simi Valley we had to drive on Santa Susanna Pass Road. Please keep those history videos coming. Thanks for taking the time to document all these aspects of the Valley.
Thanks for the compliment, and your adding to the story.
The King Gillette Ranch gets rented out for film and television location shoots pretty often. I've been there for a couple of different shoots. There are other buildings that are dormitories that have been used for various things throughout the years depending on who owned the property. It is located in what I would describe as the quintessential Southern California Coastal Mountains being that is part of the Santa Monica Mountain Range.
Thanks for adding to the story.
Thanks for another interesting video, Brad. The King Gillette Ranch is truly beautiful.
Thanks for the compliment. I really enjoyed making this video.

I live by there. Thank you for all of your informative videos
Brad Bell, with the introduction of the history of Encino, and going to some of its sites, made this an interesting Video!
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
I went to 24th st elementary school! It had over 2000 students in the 60s when me and my sister all went to. The surrounding neighborhood was rundown and poor that's why this is eye opening for me. I walked past some of these home as a small child. I lived on 22nd st.
I parked very near the school when I went to see the Paul Williams Memorial. Lots of interesting homes in the neighborhood.
I found out later that this guy was acting very erratic. It's no wonder 911 was called when he was on the top of Summit Boulder. There were two LAFD helicopters in the air which costs the taxpayers about $3,000 an hour each.
Hattie McDaniel bought in West Adams well after the area was considered the place to live. In West Adams heyday no one of color would have lived there. There were covenants that actually restricted this. She is heralded for organizing black residents to fight the lawsuit brought by neighbors wanting to enforce the race covenants.
Am disappointed that you did not include what is today the home of the LA84 Foundation and Olympic Library. That is the one mansion in the West Adams neighborhood I am familiar with and fond of.
At 1:12 into the video there is an image of the LA84 Foundation building. Thank you for mentioning two additional points of interest in the area.
@@bradbell3744 Right. I had skipped over that part earlier. Sorry.
Fascinating!
I almost bought a house up at Twin Lakes, I was in escrow and a fire hit the area and destroyed the house I was very very worried BC I didnt know how it would work with ownership. I was lucky I was able to back out of escrow. They were cabins before any houses.

A very informative video !
I grew up in Los Angeles, Adams area Marvin Gaye
Good research!
Very interesting history
Thank you! As a W. LA native, I enjoyed watching this.
How about Hancock Park. I remember Diana Ross lived in this area as well as the Golden Bird Chicken owners 1953 opened ( Willie and Zelma Stennis.)
I was born in Los Angeles 1957-- My grand parents lived on Arlington in those historic homes. My grandma made clothes for celebrity Singers , I and maybe even H M...This is so jaw dropping. I love hearing history like this. I never new this history of West Adams. I lived in the area in my 20's, never knew this. I would like to hear about Arlington as well...Even a story on the famous Golden Bird Chicken located on Adam I think or Western/Adams.. We drove from San Fernando valley to Los Angelss to get this famous chicken. I think now China owns. everything about it changed. Not the same. popularity all gone. Amzin
Great history of Los Angeles.
Very interesting! I was born in Hollywood but, there’s always something new to learn!
The house used in the Insidious movies is in the West Adams area. I think it’s on Victoria Circle.
I was born in Woodland Hills on Berdon Street just north of Ventura Blvd. off of Shoup ave. That was where I was indoctrinated to believe I was an evolved monkey living on a Spinning Space Rock in the Heliocentric Model Earth… I forgave my parents for lying to me about the tooth fairy, easter bunny and Santa… Both have passed since and now 65 years later I discovered I was lied to about the very earth I walk upon… They were lied to also so I have forgiven them for this as well… In 2024 it is not necessary to ignorantly continue this deceit… We were all divinely created and we all live on a divinely created enclosed stationary plane not a planet… Peace is possible once this truth is known by all…
Brad, I really enjoyed your video. I have driven by these places for over 50 years and now my questions are answered!
This is fascinating, thank you. I grew up in Tarzana from 1978 to 1993. All my memories of home are there. Lived on a ranch off Tampa, on Shirley Ave near the train tracks on Topham.
Lee Van Cleef lived there too at the time, did you happen to ever meet him ?
Not sure, but the Doheny house looks like the house in Captains and the Kings, the mini series based on Taylor Caldwell's novel, as Joseph Armagh's house. Also, maybe, the Fred Ridge house. At least, maybe, designed by the same architect.
I lived in Woodland Hills on Tiara Drive adjacent to Pierce College in the hills on the valley floor, this was mid 1970s until 1980. I loved living there. I was told Warner Ranch was located near where I lived. The old western movies were filmed there, and this area became Promenade Mall and the high rise buildings.
❤How precious. We have a hummingbird nest by the front door and doves nesting on the back patio. It is magical to watch them grow. San Diego.
I never heard of West Adams, very informative video.
Fatty should not have been acquitted
I tend to agree. But, Maude Delmont, his main accuser, had a police record for extortion, blackmail and prostitution. Those interested can take a look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Rappe
What a lovely house.
Hi Melinda. Here's a link to Huell Howser showcasing the mansion: czcams.com/video/wGfnhHt7sek/video.html
I went to Mt. St. Mary's and very familiar with this mantion.
My neighborhood 🤗
West Adams is a shithole. Go there. Just leave before the sun goes down. Dont wear anything expensive on your person. Dont drive a nice car.
Fear not lol
I love that area! The homes are so beautiful and full of character.
Much Appreciated!
Those roads are paved now, i do Amazon delivery there, super neat history lol
Yes, the roads are paved above the 118. But the old road leading up to Twin Lakes from Santa Susanna Pass was completely abandoned decades ago.
What is the house used for that was donated to Mount Saint Mary.
I don't know. But you call call Mount Saint Mary's University (Doheny Campus) and inquire. Here's a video by Huell Houser about the mansion: czcams.com/video/wGfnhHt7sek/video.html
Beautiful house.
Beautiful !
i love this
lol
Wow, I love that movie Breezy. I like Margot too
Great movie!
I wish I had know about this area when I was in L.A several years ago!
When I was born in 1953 we lived in "the little house" behind my grandparents house on west 17th street. Both parents USC alum., moved to "the valley" in 1957. Lots of memories here.
I pass by that yellow building everyday on my way to catch the 10 fwy and never knew there was a memorial there. I'm born and raised in that area and never knew the history. Thanks for this video.
