The Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel

This hotel has many stories from its colorful past. One story regards a long term tenant of the Knickerbocker, William Frawley, and whether he and Vivian Vance got along. Although the two actors worked well together, they greatly disliked each other. Most attribute this to Vivian Vance's vocal resentment of having to play wife to a man 22 years her senior. And she often referred to Frawley as that “old man” behind his back. Reportedly Frawley overheard Vance’s complaining; he took offense and never forgave her. 1:01 into this video there is a photo showing the sign atop the hotel that reads "HOTEL KNICKERBOCKER". Then 1:20 into this video the sign reads "THE KNICKERBOCKER". But you can clearly see that 5 letter backings are visible in this photo behind the word "THE". That's because the word "HOTEL" became the word "THE". So the "H" was moved two places to the right, the "T" was moved one place to the left and the "E" remains in its original location (the "O" and the "L" were removed). And so we're left with the word "THE" replacing the original "HOTEL". This change occurred around 1970 when the Knickerbocker was converted from a hotel to being an apartment building.
When I was 13 years old, I spent two years going to cotillion at the Knickerbocker Hotel. Cotillion allows you to learn manners and proper social behavior in the context of formal dance. It teaches boys courtesy and how to treat a lady. I remember learning the foxtrot and the cha-cha. I was paired with an attractive brunette. The two years I went to cotillion the classes were held from February to May. Over the course of the nine-month recess, my partner grew about five inches. I didn’t.
