Many years ago i was head pianist at the jonathan club,i was playing at the beach club when i saw lauren bacall out of the corner of my eye,i immediately started playing as time goes by like in the movies in that 30s style. She stopped walking ,looked at me, with the most beautiful smile ever, and blew me a kiss, and said thankyou to me .she was older but still beautiful, and she was exactly what she was ,a huge star from the golden era of Hollywood....and believe me she also looked every inch the star, tall and with classic beauty...i played for them all,but she was tops for me,what class ......
Like a lot of tough women - she could be quite generous.
What a beautiful story!
What a great story! Thanks for sharing it.
That's Bogey's Movie with Ingrid Bergman. Anyway I used to play my reharmonized version of that tune. Anyway nice to hear from another musician plying our trade.
About 25 years ago, I wrote to Lauren Bacall and 2 other actresses, requesting autographs. I included an 8x10 photo and a SASE. Of the three, Bacall was the one I least expected to respond. I was overjoyed when I received Bacall's signed photo exactly 2 weeks later. It was the fastest response I had ever received in sending fan mail. Of the other two, 1 of them signed and returned my photo a few months later and the 3rd one never responded.
Names out right now! 😄
Why would you want their signatures anyhow?! 🤔🦘
I wrote asked her for her autograph about 25 years ago also and only sent a stamped envelope…she sent me a GREAT autographed photo very quickly and I was ECSTATIC !😊
She had a guy who put the signature on, an imitation, to deal with all the obsequious fans.
@@zetristan4525 Then it's a good thing that I was in the respectful fan group that she signed for herself.
I met her and listened to her speak about her life when she was older. She was clearly very intelligent. And clearly loved Bogey.
My grandmother knew and worked w them both at Warner. She was in MARKED WOMAN w Bette Davis and Bogart. My grandmother had her picture in her home in New Canaan.
And cheated on him with Sinatra.
No. Went out with Sinatra after Bogey's death. Listen to the post again.@@patriciacathcart9233
@@vkngwmn6636 wow, that’s cool… not the ‘marked woman’ bit but the rest.
Clearly?
Superior work here!! No bashing, no judging. Just an honest, open faced docu-coverage, of a famous and loved American. I applaud all those involved with this. Thank you, from an old school American.....
I kind of agree except I still don’t understand what the “chilling revelation” was. The video was otherwise fine, I don’t understand why they needed the clickbait title.
I started writing to movie stars back in the early fifties when I was a young teenager. Back then celebrities were very appreciative of their fans and fan letters. I have an album full of autographed photos. In later years I wrote a letter to Gene Tierney ( she was quite ill at this time) telling her how much I loved her movies especially The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. About a week later I received a card thanking me and or course her signature. She died ten days later. I hold this as a very special place in my album and my heart!
That "whistle" scene is really one for the ages. It's a wonder Humphrey Bogart didn't spontaneously combust when she said it, that's how hot Lauren Bacall was.
Sizzling, smoking 🔥
I imagine whole theaters full of people fanning themselves at that scene! 🥵
😂👍💀
yeah, that's an iconic scene
The animators at Warner Bros, her and Bogie’s studio at the time, had a field day with this scene!
m.czcams.com/video/OWoIyQoEttE/video.html
There's a story of Bacall having lunch in a small café with a friend and being recognized by a young woman. Bacall was asked "Are you Lauren Bacall?" , to which she replied, "what would Lauren Bacall be doing in a place like this?"
My mom worked at Universal as one of a few assistants to Lew Wasserman, Bogart's manager. She told me an insider story. Lauren and Bogart would go to Ciro's regularly. There was another well known actor more her age that kept trying to flirt with her. She got tired of his advances. So the next time she put on a "strap on" , and when he tried to feel her up, and he reached it, she cooly said "Are you ready for this". 😂 That scared him off. Don't know if true or not, and my mom is gone. She had many other insider stories. Hooray for Hollywood.
I think people like to make up entertaining stories...
I know that name - Lew Wasserman.
@@serpentines6356 So do you also know the name Herb *********. Just seeing how well you know the name Lew Wassernan.
My favorite actress. I saw her on Broadway. Seeing her coming out the stage door to her waiting limo, with a wide smile and waving to us standing there, I was delighted to have seen her.
Wow, what year?
I admired her striking looks and acting abilities in classic films. I felt her pain for her loss, because she truly loved Humphrey Bogart, father of her children. Then I saw her on « The Mirrow has Two Faces », by Barbra Streisand. Her performance there, at her age, was excellent. What is beauty? How worth is it without capacity for depth and interpretation? I saw her once again at Harry’s Bar in Venice and she was just as I imagined: just as beautiful and ageless, forever ✨
Well said…
Yes, beautifully stated.
Good to read she was lookin' good, doing ok.
I truly admired her, even when changing my first name (hated my birth name) to Lauren. Then I found out that when Bogey was dying in great pain, she was spending her nights away from him with Frank Sinatra. She didn’t have the class to be very discreet, she was photographed with Sinatra repeatedly on the town enjoying herself while Bogey , confined to bed dying, would call for “Baby” his name for her. A classy lady? I guess that depends on your morals and values.
If you weren't there, you shouldn't comment on rumours!
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Miss Bacall's birth.
A new low in remembrance has been reached!
oh my god. Laying that whistle on his grave with that inscription is heartbreaking... I cant even 😭😭😭
It truly was!😢
I am shedding tears right now just thinking of her there, doing that for her Bogie.
She was talented, beautiful and elegant. She had a good life, and she had a long life. I don't think we can ask for more than that.
Quite a bit more imo. But its a good start.
I agree and unlike some people I get what you mean.
@@angelwings7930 You either have Jesus or you don't. There is no good life without him, and no bad life with him. Peace.
That's right, what could be better than her?
@@knowsmebyname Peace always.
Such a stunning and sultry actress. She always lent a look of mystery to film she played in. Bacall and Bogart together lent an air or mystery, sophistication and beauty to any films they acted in together. They were soulmates, so it seems.
Clearly they were soulmates. We now live in such a judgmental time, where such an age difference would be seen as cause for automatic cancellation. I mean I get it, because older, powerful men abusing or taking advantage of younger women has always been part of Hollywood culture. But sometimes ... the couple are truly in love.
That was such a heartwarming overview of Lauren, McCall‘s career and life. She was of another era and one of a kind.
Bacall
Like Gene Tierney, Lauren had a look that has never been repeated. We get look alike blondes and cookie cutter faces…but they broke the molds when they made Gene and Lauren.
I so agree ❤
@@norahdenovan8658 and Bette.
She had beautiful eyes.

Love Lauren Bacall, however I absolutely adore Ava Gardner.
I had a nice experience with Bacall I requested her to autograph my 1944 Life magazine with her on the cover “ New Movie Find”
Still have it proudly hanging in my house .
Wow that’s amazingly special 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Be careful who you tell. It's probably worth quite a lot! ❤️
so jealous of you
Mak sure your glass isn’t touching the image then, and your mat is cotton!
My father's cousin used to work around Hollywood studios with his parents. He was the same age as Lauren Bacall, and he claimed that his mother tried to arrange a date for him with Lauren when she first showed up at the Warner Bros. studio, before she was famous. He said that he refused the date because she was too skinny! I am not sure whether to believe this story, but it made a good yarn because nobody could imagine refusing a date with Lauren Bacall! It was credible, because the ages, dates locations all match up!
Despite the age difference, theirs was a real love story ❤
Let’s not make an illusion into a fact. Neither was a saint and they both cheated on each other. 5:59
Except that throughout their marriage he carried on an affair with the lady who made his wigs.
@@SilverScreenJean REALLY???
I loved Humphrey Bogart! I read his biography, and was glad to see what a nice man he really was.
@@paulkirton8945😅😅
Bette Davis was a brilliant actress and created an impact on the screen
I agree. One good story I read in a bio by her close friend Mearane Jordan was when Ava Gardner was staying at the Hilton Madrid. Ava was in the lobby & in swoops Bette. Ava says "Miss Davis my name is Ava Gardner & I'm a big fan of yours" Bette says "of course you are dear, of course you are" & moved along 😂
I've always loved Lauren (Betty) Bacall and I've enjoyed most of her films, but I didn't know that she had been on stage as well. She has oddly appealing iciness about her that leaves her audience wondering if she's about to give us a great one-line zinger, or go into a tirade - whatever 'it' is, she's got it in spades. Thank you for all of your videos, they are well researched and quite enjoyable.
Thanks for the comment, we really appreciate your support!
A truly wonderful presentation. Please continue your authenticity. Very appealing.
I love this narrator! I could listen to you all day!
Me, too! I’m of Scottish descent and I love his accent.
Nice soothing easy to listen voice, love it!!❤
YES!!
Neil Oliver ?
To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep are two of my favorite movies. Bacall and Bogart had such chemistry!
I remember seeing her being interviewed and what she had to say about Sinatra was "See this floor tile? It has more personality than Frank Sinatra." He would have been a terrible husband and I doubt she would have put up with him for long. Good riddance.
Always beautiful and mysterious, Ms. Bacall was the epitome of style and grace. Any woman who could cause Bogie to melt into his shoes is a force to be reckoned with. @ 6:45, the young man seen first in the photo is a young Ronald Reagan. R.I.P. Beautiful Dreamer.
I saw her in the audience at a performance of Hamlet with Jude Law.as I walked up the aisle. She caught my eye with an imperious look that implied "Don't even think about it!" lol. I wouldn't have interfered with her privacy!
"Imperious" is the perfect adjective to describe her facial expression! #NailedIt
Bacall s eye's started the phrase bedroom eyes.
Always loved LB. Thanks for the video and great narration.
Nicely produced about Bacall. At this point I feel I must also recommend for the apparent integrity of NOT relying on A I text to voice.
Very moving documentary. My compliments. Brilliant.
We had it all (we had it all!)
Just like Bogie and Bacall
Starring in our own late-late show
Sailing away to Key Largo - Bertie Higgins
I always thought the song referenced their films, not their actual lives.
Love that song.
She has always been one of my favorites! Great video
Lauren Bacall never had a crush on Bogart. She first saw him in Casablanca and even when they met, she said there was no fireworks or anything. It was only after he went to her dressing room to kiss her that she knew something was there. Read her autobiography.
Bogart told Bacall during "The Big Sleep" production that he went back to his wife and she cried so much, she had to press ice on her face to lower the swelling before filming.
Something also worth mentioning was that she was in acting school with Kirk Douglas but had to drop out because she didn't qualify for a scholarship, it only went to men.
Thanks for correcting her history.
Never?
Dirty old men , nothing romantic about it...😮😢
They were already married when they made the Big Sleep
The 'no crush' was mutual, but she liked being Mrs Bogard so much she wouldn't let him go.
I read her autobiography "By, Myself", twice, way back in the late 1980's (the book was published in 1978 I believe) when the book stores and libraries were overflowing with the autobiographies (both official and NOT so official) of the world greatest classic film stars (except they weren't called "classic films" back then because most of those stars were still very much alive and still working (Bacall still had about 7 years to go before her one and only Academic Award nominated role in the Barbara Striesand film The Mirror Has Two Faces for example, & Katherine Hepburn had just won her 4th Best Actress Academy Award 5 years earlier. Anyway I don't remember reading anything in her autobiography about an affair with Hawks. And she wasn't one to hide her dirty laundry, provided there was an A list name hanging on her line she could brag about. Yes she was beautiful, she was also 19 yo when she married Bogart, and she was 19 when she met him too! I do remember her writing about the grown up drama she got herself tangled in as her affair with Bogart gained momentum. His then wife Mayo, I think she was #2, and a raging alcoholic. Then again so was Bogart. His wife used to call Betty's house , smashed, in the middle of the night to warn her about Bogart and they'd hang up her phone would ring again and this time it would be Bogart, smashed, calling from a pay phone or the phone that belonged to the bar he was drinking in. He'd stay out all night just to get away from his wife. And Betty's mother would take the phone and tell everyone to "Go to bed! Betty's got to work in the morning!" Oh how exciting it must have been for her! "So what! I've got Humphrey Bogart all up in my shit! Who's the no talent now!?"
I’ve always admired Lauren Bacall, a beautiful no-nonsense woman. Her decision to never have plastic surgery in the movie world that seems to rely on its falsity, proves her magnificence.
She was so gorgeous. Love her❤
Beautiful stunning actress. Completely dominated the screen every frame she featured in. Very few actors that powerful.
Great video with superior writing and narration. Thanks.
Another fine narration by the only one on this account I'll give my time to. He's easy to listen to and properly pronounces his words
An excellent presentation, worthy of many more views then 43K. Bacall was an example of a woman who was sexy and seductive without being Hollywood beautiful. Next to Grable and Monroe she's clearly not the prettiest but by far the most interesting and attractive.
Beauty….. it’s in the eye of the beholder?
That seeming depth of character, intellect and [to me ] sexiness I wouldn’t have wasted any energy on the blondes and have made a bee-line to Lauren
Beautifully done. Thank you.
A wonderful and moving story, brilliantly told. Congratulations; you really have done her justice. What a beautiful life, sad that Bogie passed so relatively young.
My mother was a friend of both Betty Davis and Bacall. She knew Bacall from the early 50's until she left town - they were both young ladies in Hollywood married to actors, my mom worked for SAG. I can assure all you have this narrative exactly correct, except when the affair with Sinatra started. He was a total jerk to many women. The Big Sleep was a big hit but makes no sense. I think her best film was the Shootist - she was brilliant in it, Hollywood Royalty. Bacall was very Jewish - to her soul.
Fantastic presentation about Lauren Bacall! Truly, it was beautifully done. Thank you! I love your channel! ❤
This was so good, so well done. I was sorry that I could see the years of smoking on her face. But still beautiful. I could feel the chemistry with Bogart.
Lauren Bacall wrote two autobiographies, so I'm not sure I would classify her as "remarkably private."
celialovett5880: She wrote those late in life. It makes a difference.
@@500midnightmaryI looked it up and she was 54 when her 1st autobiography was written. I didn't realize she had also written a third biography, which I look forward to reading.
It will always be Bogie and Bacall!! Nothing like them since!! I love all their movies‘ together because you can see their real love for each other.
Nicely done, buddy. You brought a tear to an old man's eye.
Wonderful bio of Lauren Bacall. She was, to me, the most beautiful woman of that era. Stunning, classy and smart. Her and Bogie were the real thing.
Even growing up watching Lauren Bacall in the classics, I was in love ;)
This video was excellent. I didn't know any of this and your take on the story was well done. I enjoyed it. Thanks. Now, I know the real story!
What an interesting person she was, and not just on the screen and stage.
An excellent synopsis of her career. Thank you.
This video does not mention her name at birth, Betty Joan Perske.
Or the fact that she was related by blood to the Israeli political figure, Simon Peres.
Despite coming of age during the Depression, Betty Joan had a comfortable childhood and did not experience hard times.
Not related to Simon Peres. That's been checked out. There's a very good new book about Bogart & Bacall that cleans up a lot of misinformation.
My favorite couple from that era. "To Have And Have Not" is my favorite classic movie. I enjoyed this video very much. Thank you!
You told this brilliantly,I really enjoyed this I’m not a fan of either Bacall or Bogart never watched their movies but I enjoyed this very much, thank you.
You should watch their movies! The first two they made, anyways. But the other two were great as well.
Great work man. The photos are tops and narration calm and informative
I think that Key Largo is her best movie. She's really lovely and stripped down in it. It's a very good movie too. She would be considered a beauty now even more than then. She has a very modern face and long lean look. Her face was angular with beautiful natural tawny hair and hooded, feline eyes. Not so much exotic as modelesque. A beauty.
And when she sings, her voice is a lot deeper than Hoagy Carmichael, as he plays the piano in "To Have and Have Not."
So because she stripped down you like her. Typical.
@@Primetimetoons-bx2mj Do you know what stripped down means in this context? Don't be so rude.
Hooray, she SPEAKS !!! Thank u very much !!!!!!!
Superb documentary..

A very well narrated, fascinating documentary.
Some of the slurs this woman endured (& still does) because of her religion & looks is absolutely bewildering. I think she was one of the most beautiful, earthy & interesting actresses to ever grace a movie screen. Even in her later years you hung on every word she said. Can we think of one actress today who has her allure? Not easy, is it? 🤔
I am not understanding because the studio heads were almost all jewish.
@KarmicSalt Same here. Esp the two biggies - Mayer & Goldwyn being Jewish. But, I was told by a friend who is Jewish that, "We are our own worst enemy." And that contrary to popular belief, there's too little support for each other. And far too much competition & animousity towards each other. Shocked the heck out of me to hear that... 😳?

Loved this video and the Narrator thank you.
very informative and concise bio, thanks. i guess emphasizing scandal in the description increases views, but sounds like she had a great, full life with a lot of love as well as loss.
Wow. She refused Grumman's invitation. Any actor would jump at that chance. This speaks volumes of her humility.
Wasn't humility. Bogart suggested she not do it to be rebellious. Think he also didn't want the competition.
I appreciate channels like this for exposing the truth that Hollywood is an immoral cesspit and always has been.
Oh yeah so much worse than society as a whole ( sarcasm)
Outstanding!
She was lovely
What a tear jerker ending! 😭
I would have kept the whistle around my neck and been buried with it 💞
Very interesting. Cool info. Thanks!
Love triangle. Sounds romantic. What if you said that two men were exploiting the youth and sexuality of a young woman for their own satisfaction and Bacall was compliant because she knew that that this was how the game was played and she was willing to be used in order to get what she wanted. Everyone was being exploited. Love triangle it was not.
Definitely a power couple.
The women and photography was beautiful back then in the golden age of Hollywood!

Back in those days, the only form of cancer treatment they had was radiation, this is what led to his physical decline.
Nope...The narrator said that chemotherapy was also used...pay attention.
I was going to say the same thing! My mom died of cancer in 1963 (6 yrs.after Bogie) & she never

Why do sites like this have to put up everything that happens to someone in Hollywood why must they print or use all of the bad things? Everyone is human, everyone has faults, everyone has problems whether you're famous or not. When I was growing up I saw many of these Golden Age stars in movies that I loved and when I saw them give interviews they were gracious and kind and the audience on these shows seem to love them. Why put out all the bad stuff that happened in their lives? Just because they're no longer here?
In Hollywood sex had nothing to do with meaningful relationships...
Sort of like the way things are now!
