  • The Chemosphere is one of the most iconic homes in the world. The architect was John Lautner, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright.
A question that I came across when making this video was whether the lift was a funicular or a inclined elevator. This is what I found:
An inclined elevator is distinguished from the similar funicular railway in that its cars operate independently whereas funiculars are composed of two vehicles that synchronously counterbalance one another.
I also found this: An inclined elevator differs from a funicular in that the latter has a cable attached to a pair of vehicles, the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalancing each other. In the inclined elevator one car is either winched up to the station at the top of the incline where the cable is collected on a winch drum, or the single car is balanced by a counterweight.
So although you'll find the Chemosphere cable car mentioned elsewhere as a funicular, I believe it is an inclined elevator.
If you're wondering why Leonard Malin didn't consider getting a bank loan to help raise the $60,000 shortfall, my guess is that no lender would lend on such an outlandish structure. It would not be cost effective for a lender to make the determination that the house was a sound design, or that the home would be marketable if the homeowner faced foreclosure.
