- The traditional straight razor is not used by barbers anymore, at least not in California.
Barbers in California use a "safety" straight razor to give shaves. When traditional straight razors were used there was a strap of leather that would hang from the barber’s chair called a strop (rhymes with drop). And the straight razor was “stropped” between every shave-dragged back and forth with the sharp end trailing the direction of the blade.
Strops won’t be seen attached to barber’s chair anymore (unless one is left as a relic to the past). Stropping would clean and help keep the blade straight. But stropping is not sharpening. Sharpening is achieved with a wet stone.
You can watch this video of stropping being implemented. People do use straight razors for their own personal use, and need to strop them after all:

Gillette died in 1932, and his widow sold the property to prominent film director Clarence Brown in 1935. Brown regularly hosted large parties for well-known Hollywood personalities here,
and made several changes to the property including the addition of a small airfield with a single, paved northwest/southeast runway to the east of the main house. According to a CA State map, the airfield was “installed by Brown circa 1938.” To See it go to this URL:

and scroll down to see the map. Today, it appears that there is no trace of the airfield.

My wife and I walked the Gillette Ranch for excercise...but Brad gave interesting information that made it more interesting
Thanks for another interesting video, Brad. The King Gillette Ranch is truly beautiful.
The King Gillette Ranch gets rented out for film and television location shoots pretty often. I've been there for a couple of different shoots. There are other buildings that are dormitories that have been used for various things throughout the years depending on who owned the property.
