Gerard Butler is a gorgeous man. I adore his singing in TPOTO. I play the soundtrack a great deal. Someone gave me the original cast recording before I even saw either the movie or the play. I hated it. The movie converted me to a phantom fan. And I’ve seen the play on Broadway since then. Movie wins out in my estimation primarily because of Gerard Butler.

The lyrical differences between this song and the Music of the Night-which I’d argue is the closest thing the Phantom has to a genuine love song for Christine-have always been striking to me. MotN is made up of commands (“Close your eyes, purge your thoughts, hear it, feel it”) while AIAoY is made up of requests (“ *Say* you love me, that’s all I *ask* of you”) It’s a subtle contrast, but it really speaks volumes about the difference between Raoul and the Phantom.

That's voices are amazing, but the other versions are good too. If can take the different features we can enjoy the greatest recital.

I like this phantom more than the opera version he is more raw like he is supposed to be

So the film was set in 1870 (despite the fact there were no signs of the siege of Paris occurring in the movie, as the city was under attack by the Prussians in that year) and the Phantom was about thirty (a guess I suppose but about that) - the child phantom in the flashback was about ten? So that makes it 1850. The Paris Opera House was not even designed until 1860, and it wasn't open for business until 1875, five years after the events of this film. Why they changed the dates amazes me - it added nothing to the film to set it in 1870 rather than 1880 when the book was set. Research costs nothing!
