    Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
    The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.
    Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

      you are so right! I remember vividly I was in my first year at Bradford University and fell in love with Phantom after just a few minutes of listening to the CD (oh yes who buys CDs these days? the inventors Philips - who also published the Phantom music - has already left the audio and music publishing markets!!) There wouldn't be a day when I wouldn't listen to it. Then I went all the way to London and queued up at the Box Office. Someone offered me a ticket for 25 pounds, I didn't even know if it was fake (that's before the China days, so chances were slim!) , only to realise that it was a MIDDLE SEAT IN THE FRONT ROW, so I saw clearly every nuance including the chandelier rising up to the roof from the stage! Time flies, I am now 54 and will soon disappear from this world!

    • @lLadyAszneth
      @lLadyAszneth Před 3 lety

      It was "OK." Lyrics were changed, in MOTN and NO grate in the lair for Erik to hang from and "frighten" Christine just a tad. The perch on the roof was different, NO crucifix. Gosh, I was never able to see the show LIVE, but I know all that. For it to have been for the 25th anniversary, especially with Michael showing up at the end, it could've been WAY better! It felt like they were trying to make it "bigger" than its supposed to be. It was hice, however; seeing Ramin paying homage to the Phantom Master, as it should be. (sniff)

      @@lLadyAszneth, fair enough, we've all got our opinions. I prefer the 25th Anniversary, and you don't, apparently. But perhaps we can agree Phantom of the Opera overall is amazing? I hope so.

    • @lLadyAszneth
      @lLadyAszneth Před 3 lety

      @@WlngDlngBat OH YES, without a doubt! My connection to it is very special, and I was once at 18 yrs old, same age as Christine in the story, a hair's breadth away from being able to go audition for Hal Prince himself, in July 1988. I was an actress from 7 yrs old fwd, and my love for acting & singing produced a nice voice escaping my throat and my singing teacher thought nice ENOUGH to get up there and give it my ALL! See, I've been in-love with MC since I was 10yo (40 yrs ago now), and had been learning her part for over a year due to him, my teacher, giving me this new album to learn her part as vocal exercise. That's all it was supposed to be. Sadly, he didn't know my connection to it love for both this story that also contains my birth date, and its male lead. I'd NO idea at that point he was even English since we had no www back then. Had no idea what Cornelius Hackl looked like 20 yrs older, and on the album, his voice sounded so familiar and it took me ages to realize they were the same man, only older and probably devastatingly GORGEOUS!
      Anyway, I didn't get to go and I've lost SO many years over this biggest regret of mine. Despite how fiercely independent I was, and NO family support, I didn't know how to carry on after highschool with my acting n singing seriously. But I digress.
      There it is, so yes, I do INDEED love this show, story, despite never having seen it yet. Angry at successor Phantoms who I feel haven't done HIS legacy justice! 😞😞😢😢
      I could give every detail, but it's extremely painful for me, as you can probably imagine. I've been wanting to write him to tell him all about it. (Sigh). 😞

    • @WlngDlngBat
      @WlngDlngBat Před 3 lety +1

      @@lLadyAszneth, I'm sorry it worked out that way. Maybe you should write him, although I know it's not at all my place to say what you do. Of course, I can understand, to some degree at least, where you're coming from, and I can empathize with you. See, the 25th Anniversary holds a great deal of significance for me due to certain events that took place in my life years ago, and POTO in general just helped me through so much, and helped me connect with people.
      So, I do hope you are able to resolve what's happened to you, and, you know, even though I'm some rando stranger on the internet, feel free to respond back! We Phans stick together! :D

    When I was in first and second grade, one of the movies I was obsessed with was "Once Upon A Forest". I loved the badger teacher, whose niece is made sick by inhaling a deadly man-made gas. Many years later, when I was fourteen, I used some allowance money to buy a "Phantom" cast recording, grabbing the first thing I saw with the mask logo. Thank goodness that I didn't stop and read the fine print, because the c.d. I'd picked was actually from the original LONDON cast, not the movie one. I remember listening to it and feeling completely blown away, and also that Erik's voice sounded familiar. It wasn't until a few weeks later, while babysitting the children of someone in our apartment complex, that I was able to put the proverbial two and two together. They had a DVD copy of "Once Upon A Forest", and when "Please, Wake Up" began, my mouth fell open. I did a little research into Michael's backstory, and I came to find a kindred spirit connection with him. He was bullied as a child, just as I was, and we also both had issues with hyperactivity. I'd love to meet him one day and have a deep conversation about all this. He comes across as a really sweet guy, which makes me think we'd both have a good time.

    Oh Andrew, even though I'm still ticked off with you for waiting too long to have Michael in the film, or was it the studio's fault, (I mean really!), it was GREAT of you to do a talk with Michael here. Michael, in 1990, why didn't you have a rest and come back, maybe in a new city again? You said you never wanted to leave altogether quite yet. 😞😢
    I too was a child actress growing up. Was in all the school plays and musicals in drama and Chorus classes. I was classically trained at the piano too for 10 yrs, but it was acting I really loved. Yet sadly, due to lack of support from my family, I did not know how to pursue it on my own.
    😞😢
    However, I nearly got to go audition for Hal, when the show came to Broadway, when I was 18 & my teacher had given me the album for me to learn Christine's part, a year earlier, purely to train my voice more, to extend my range and with music he thought I'd love since he had me doing so many Latin acapella pieces, and I wasn't crazy abt all that. But, without a copy of Phantom's score, I had to tap it out in my piano. It took a long time, months of grueling work, lost my voice twice trying to get on top of all Christine's highest notes, and once I hit her HIGH E, like with Michael, I "became" her. An odd sensation!
    My connection to the story is also deep as my first name is Krystal, my birthdate is in the text and all of a sudden my Cornelius Hackl was this new character, 20 yrs older with a deeper voice "training" me via Erik, like in the story.
    And a'course I didn't know what Michael looked like in 1988, since there was no internet in those days I never put 2+2 together ... that the name "Michael Crawford" on the album cover was the same Michael Crawford on my VHS tape of Dolly. I'd been SO in love with Cornelius since the tender age of 10 (1980), when I first saw Dolly and grew up adoring him and then all of a sudden he was MY Phantom! It was all rather overwhelming on an emotional level and when my plans fell through to go to New York City in '88 to audition for Hal I was absolutely CRUSHED! 😭😭😭
    I never got to watch Michael LIVE, and to this day should I ever get to go up to the Majestic and watch a performance I'd be nervous that I never enjoy it since I feel hardly none of his successor Phantoms have honored the legacy you left them, Michael and naturally, that YOU wouldn't be on the stage. They've all been too stiff and operatic! None of the soul and passion you displayed, with both yr voice and body. I mean it's called "Phantom" of the Opera not the "Opera ghost" of the Opera. While I was learning her part, it was hard to imagine what was going on with the show, in all the scenes.
    Aside from all that, thank you for this chat you posted with Michael, truly. I'm your biggest phan and for me having been an adopted child always wished I had been adopted by a family in England, so I could have watched you, while I was growing up. I'm also thankful to whomever for having taped Barnum which was so delightful and you were perfect of course! All the songs are SO catchy and I sing them round the clock and drive my son (22) absolutely crazy. I love The South Bank Show where you Michael was showing the presenter the last exhausting routine in Barnum, running up all the stairs "3 at a time." You were so yummy curly hair, big smile and downright adorable w those skinny chicken legs, and said the best part of the evening was when the "two girls rip off yr clothes for the quick change" right before yr big jump! Impish like me! Also, the footage of you with Sasha was so good seeing you in action learning all you needed to do getting ready for Barnum and how you learned abt the "spirit" of the circus which you'd never known. I had though. Growing up with the B&B circus rolling into our town (Tallahassee FL) on the huge train very near our house. It was all SO glorious and your company TRULY did justice to the spirit of the circus and now Barnum is beloved and graces the shelf of our home collection of films.
    I wish someone had taped both Black Comedy, Flowers and Billy. I'd love to see Billy, but there's only a few clips here and there. Oh and Michael even though I've not seen all your films, yet, I absolutely LOVED you in The Jokers w Oliver Reed, in all yr, what 25 yrs old glory? The moment at the party you glanced at the camera, smiled devilishly with raised eyebrows and my knees turned to Jell-O! 😁 Michael, your work with children is an inspiration and seeing how you are with the kids is wonderful. One can see just how much it means to you and it's just lovely.
    Sorry my post was so long and MICHAEL, I am writing you a letter, that I will somehow make arrive in yr hands on wax sealed parchment because I want to tell you the details of my story.
    ANDREW, would you ask Cameron if a stage show was ever recorded for all us Phans suffering over never seeing Michael? Releasing that NEXT YEAR for the 35th anniversary, would be just Phantastic, a'course! Think about it please? Pleeeeeeease?
    Michae and Andrew, I hope you're safe out there.
    Eternally yours....
    Your REAL Christine.
