Our Panama Junta de Embarre - Reviving the Mud Home Tradition
In 2019, I spent weeks inviting our neighbors in the Panama countryside to our junta de embarre, a mud-home building celebration, where the owners provide the materials, liquor, meals, snacks, and live music, and the attendees help you build part of your mud home (casa de quincha). This is a dead tradition, only seen in local festivals but no longer in actual livable homes. This is the footage from this special day, where 600 people showed up to our farm, submerged in heaps of mud, and immersed in a tradition of the past to help us build the first part of our home. Older countryfolk were thrilled to see our excitement for this tradition and to have the opportunity to teach the next generation, many of whom had never been to one. After the final shot, I took over the project to transform it into a modern (but still breathable and natural) living space. However, this event is a critical part to our home's story.
It is the largest casa de quincha ever built in Panama! It has become an object of lore, excitement, and stories within our small community and will continue to inspire future generations. To learn more about our journey to building a mud home, you can read about it on our website turiyapanama.com.

    @Turiyapanama they usually ferment the inner part of the totumo under ground and make a type of jarabe which can be used for cleaning the uterus but especially for the respiratory part of the body. As it's a bit tricky to make and many who do know don't want to share ;) one can also buy the jarabe de totumo from Peru.

    Love love love I only have one question. It seems like there is a lot of gaps between the roof of the house and the walls, is that done by design also? Or will you be finishing that at a later date? I would be concerned about bugs moving into your lovely house or if there is a lot of rain with wind that you would get a lot of moisture getting in.

      @turiyapanama Some of my family were amongst the first residents when it was known as Pueblo de Los Angeles. Those old adobe's are long gone I'm sure. Apparently, my grandparents aspired to build one for themselves & it never happened, though they did build their own house. I have a lot of roots to that area, though I live further North. I do know some of the early history, it was a nice place with a mixture of Mexicans & 'Americans', the 'gringos' cooperating, inter marrying & building a great city. There were residents there from all over the world after gold was discovered. Up until that time CA was a very isolated quiet place. I'm blabbing on, but that was a very interesting time & place. A wild-west town!

    there is no need for cracks at all, i poured my floor straight on the earth as well, and if you have the right ration from sand to clay, even without straw, no cracks! if your base layer is cracking, because of to much clay parts, then its not a good foundation for the top layer! the bottom layer should be done with lightly wet "roadbase" and propperly compressed each and every 3 cm until you reach a layer of around 10cm, no cracks at all.. finish layer not more then 3cm thick but only 10%clay in the mix, no cracks!;)

    • @donPepos420
      @donPepos420 Před měsícem

      and its easy to find out the sand to clay ration in your soil, by putting a sample into a water bottle and shake it for a bit until the clay had time to dissolve in the water, then just leave it standing somewhere not shaking or vibrating and in 24 hours you can see the sand on the bottom and the clay on top, to make out your soil ratio!
