Hello! My name is Kristina. I am a Harvard and MIT grad and former Rocket Scientist building my own home off-grid in Panama! On our permaculture farm, I experiment with natural building techniques from around the world -- from Morocco and India to West Africa and China. I teach locals natural building techniques. I am making a natural building school and permaculture education center, to conserve ancient wisdom, promote organic farming and sustainable living, and keep the local indigenous community employed. We are a 501c3 non-profit and plan to restore the deforested county we live in, an action which is threatening local water supplies and species. We hope you enjoy following our journey and learn various ways to incorporate the bliss of nature into your life in small ways! To donate to our cause, please visit www.turiyapanama.com !
Our Panama Junta de Embarre - Reviving the Mud Home Tradition
In 2019, I spent weeks inviting our neighbors in the Panama countryside to our junta de embarre, a mud-home building celebration, where the owners provide the materials, liquor, meals, snacks, and live music, and the attendees help you build part of your mud home (casa de quincha). This is a dead tradition, only seen in local festivals but no longer in actual livable homes. This is the footage from this special day, where 600 people showed up to our farm, submerged in heaps of mud, and immersed in a tradition of the past to help us build the first part of our home. Older countryfolk were thrilled to see our excitement for this tradition and to have the opportunity to teach the next generation, many of whom had never been to one. After the final shot, I took over the project to transform it into a modern (but still breathable and natural) living space. However, this event is a critical part to our home's story.
It is the largest casa de quincha ever built in Panama! It has become an object of lore, excitement, and stories within our small community and will continue to inspire future generations. To learn more about our journey to building a mud home, you can read about it on our website turiyapanama.com.

You embedded the bamboo posts into the earth, possibly exposing end-grain to moisture-wicking and rot. I wonder if that is happening.
@Turiyapanama they usually ferment the inner part of the totumo under ground and make a type of jarabe which can be used for cleaning the uterus but especially for the respiratory part of the body. As it's a bit tricky to make and many who do know don't want to share ;) one can also buy the jarabe de totumo from Peru.
In Ecuador and Colombia (and i think Venezuela as well) it's called totumo. They come in all different sizes and shapes and afro- colombians also make wonderful bottles out of it. It's also used in natural medicine.
I'm curious about the natural medicine! Haven't heard of that! Thank you for sharing 😊
Love love love I only have one question. It seems like there is a lot of gaps between the roof of the house and the walls, is that done by design also? Or will you be finishing that at a later date? I would be concerned about bugs moving into your lovely house or if there is a lot of rain with wind that you would get a lot of moisture getting in.
Cheer~~~(of a floor or structure) made of compressed earth.😊
Love your videos! How long do you wait after you apply the soap to rub the stone over it?
Thank you! It depends on your environment, but for me, about 30 minutes! If I'm working outside and it's hot/windy, it can be as little as 10 min! Needs to be not wet and not fully dry. I'll have online workshops on this next year!
@@turiyapanama I'm definately signing up! I am so inspired by you. Do I mix the black olive oil soap with water or just use it pure out of the bottle onto a sponge to apply? Can you provide a link to the type and brand that you use please? Thank you so much for your time and precious information !
@angelatyler1366 black olive oil comes as a thick paste! You mix one part paste with 20 parts water, this creates the soap! I use Savon Noir from limeworks.us. You can use my code KristinaB for a discount! 😊
@@turiyapanama Thank you so much!
Kristina, does the lime putty paint you made consist of only lime, pigment and water? No sand at all? I'm trying to experiment.
Hi Turiya. May I ask you what brand or wha the contents are of the black olive oil soap? I would like to give it a try, but I want to make sure I get something (maybe US equivalent) to mix with my lyme for waterproofing.
I use Savon Noir from limeworks.us! I have a discount code you can use. Code is KristinaB ....you do not mix the soap with the lime. The soapy mix goes on top, and it must be done at a specific time. I will have online workshops about it next year!
@@turiyapanama Thank you very much Turiya! I've faced a great deal of criticism in the US being the only one around considering cob to combat WV poverty. I've heard things as far as "It not safe for the kids," and even my own Mother and Father lack faith in me. It means a lot having your support. We're documenting our own journey for kids who may not be able to afford housing. If we decide to upload it, I would love to reference your channel you grow.
I watch your past videos where you did lime plaster can ypu pls tell me what you mix in the lime? What was the quantity & the whole process
I can't share all of this over a comment, it is several hours of teaching material! I will have it in a workshop in 2025 that I will post online
Can i do earthen floor on cement concrete screed floor? Will it mKe sense? I love earthen floor. Cheers
Yes it can! You won't get the grounding effect but it will be well protected from vapor rising.
Soo beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
could I build an outdoor basin with this technique? Where to collect water, like a big bath.
Thank you for another dose of meditation.
So beautifull seeing all those people working together at the mud house rising party.
I believe we had something similar in my village to build a home for a newly-wedded couple. The tradition is gone now. It's wonderful to experience this through you.
Yes!! I believe traditionally it was for newlyweds here too. What country are you from? I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
Just discovered your channel and i am impressed with your work! Lovely house, very educative, and you are an interesting host with great presentation. Definitely one of the most underrated channels! Keep up the great work.
Great work and video, thank you! Do you think one can cover floor tiles we such a beautiful floor? How thick does it have to be at minimum? Cheers! Alex
Hello! You could, i recommend not using adhesive since that will block the humidity transfer in the floor. You can try sticking with lime plaster or even earthen plaster. Use unsealed tiles! The floor should be 10cm minimum to hold the weight of people/furniture
@@turiyapanama Thank you very much!

Humm... don't believe those are OSHA approved scaffolding 🤪😆 !! Wish I had a crew that big to help !
Each bamboo pole was actually rooted 2 feet into the ground! So they are sturdier than you'd expect 😉

I hope he was paid well... that is a very long, hard day to move Clay mud sand water and mix by hand then pound into floor and make It even. I think it is a great job with or without cracks it adds to the warm, comfy feel of the room. it could be great with or without cracks and all. Something well worth carrying on traditional ways...

Thanks for posting thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience peace and blessings
How kind of you! Blessings to you as well!
How many baills do you think you go through when you make That cob dirt mixture for the walls ?
It really depends on the size of the house and the style of mud wall you do (bahareque uses less straw for example). A standard room could use about 3-4 bales
@@turiyapanama is bahareque mud and straw without the frame?
@coyoteserranoband instead of bamboo 6 in apart, you use thin slats close together so the plaster covers it in a thinner layer!
If you can please make a video of your mud sink in the kitchen 🙏🏽
Can I szk how big is your plot of land?
We have 22 acres! We bought it in 3 pieces over several years
You should have a tv show on diy or hgtv or something. The work you’re doing is incredible and your story is amazing!
That would be so cool!! Thank u 😊
my great grandmother had an Adobe house in LA
In LA!? Is it still standing? How cool! I haven't seen any traditional architecture in LA besides maybe the missions!
@turiyapanama Some of my family were amongst the first residents when it was known as Pueblo de Los Angeles. Those old adobe's are long gone I'm sure. Apparently, my grandparents aspired to build one for themselves & it never happened, though they did build their own house. I have a lot of roots to that area, though I live further North. I do know some of the early history, it was a nice place with a mixture of Mexicans & 'Americans', the 'gringos' cooperating, inter marrying & building a great city. There were residents there from all over the world after gold was discovered. Up until that time CA was a very isolated quiet place. I'm blabbing on, but that was a very interesting time & place. A wild-west town!
@kabuti2839 this is SO interesting!! My husband was raised there but not born there. Sounds like it was a town of dreamers and cooperation. Not what I expected at all! Natural building is becoming a movement again there (very slowly)!
Awesome! Thank you. I can use this for patio furniture ❤
Doesnt the bamboo rot or weevil/termite?
I would've thought so! But these homes last 200+ yrs! The variety of bamboo used is a green type (not guadua) and is cut during the 5 days before the new moon.
I read "a former rocket scientist ", then I see a beautiful young lady frolicking in the mud! Ahh, welcome to the real living young lady! I'm an ex linguist, ex university prof from the UK...over ten years ago I left my rented apartment and well paid job and moved to the mountains in central Europe..now I live off grid, no electricity, not even solar panels, no car, no job, no money...but I grow my food, keep chickens and goats for milk, i make everything in my very small old stone house by hand, i live alone but i don't feel lonely, surrounded by beautiful mountains, trees, animals and of course tons of books. ...I'm learning cob building because I want to build my own cob greenhouse 😊..keep inspiring young lady❤ . Sue xxx
That sounds like a fulfilling and connected life!! I'm so happy you followed what called to you. It isn't easy making such a shift! Pleasure to connect with you and thank you so much for your support!!
@turiyapanama I actually have an Adobe brick 'machine' here & always wanted to make some but, it is easier just to make them in a batch & cut them out, i think because the machine is rather complex & only one at a time. I may try it.
Just thinking About the same idea Do love the way you live
LOOKS LIKE COW DUNG GREAT
Nice
Loved your video ❤ im requesting mini vlogs of you at home please bcz i love your home so much its so wholesome
there is no need for cracks at all, i poured my floor straight on the earth as well, and if you have the right ration from sand to clay, even without straw, no cracks! if your base layer is cracking, because of to much clay parts, then its not a good foundation for the top layer! the bottom layer should be done with lightly wet "roadbase" and propperly compressed each and every 3 cm until you reach a layer of around 10cm, no cracks at all.. finish layer not more then 3cm thick but only 10%clay in the mix, no cracks!;)
and its easy to find out the sand to clay ration in your soil, by putting a sample into a water bottle and shake it for a bit until the clay had time to dissolve in the water, then just leave it standing somewhere not shaking or vibrating and in 24 hours you can see the sand on the bottom and the clay on top, to make out your soil ratio!
Wow! Without straw! That's awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Do you think one could place tiles on an earthen or lime floor??
Absolutely! You could probably stick them with lime plaster. I would use only unglazed ceramic tile on them so moisture can still escape through the floor tile!
Love it!! Thanks for sharing ❤
😘♥️
Fruit loops smell like lemongrass to me.
It actually does!! You're right!
all this "we" but you're not even doing any of the hard work in the video.....
I have to take a break from working to film. Pretty difficult to work/film with muddy hands. I don't have a filmographer following me around 🤷♀️
You're definitely new here lol
Sure wanted or would like to see the results of the patch shown getting put down after drying, preferably from the exact camera angle (oops there I go getting all bossy😬😐🤐)😏😄!!
My next video will show the results! 😊
😂
This is a super ignorant question but where do you get your spices from? Is there a grocery store somewhere?
I get most from the local store! Special ones I'll get in Panama City or I'll order them from Mountain Rose Herbs! I have a link in the vid description 😊
I am so in awe that ppl can live like this! I’m so inspired.
Goodness. Thank you for sharing this personal story. I'm so glad you've been about to take it all in stride. I can relate to much of your story. My daughter was born at 24 weeks so you can imagine, my experience was very far from perfect. But she she i are both here and she is thriving and that's what matters the most. Couple that with the fact that I'm also a registered nurse... Your story gave me palpitations a few times 😅😅😅
😆 my friends who are nurses were scared for me! But I trusted that everything would be okay, and it was! 24 weeks is so early! Far from what you imagined I'm sure. But yes, that both of you are thriving and doing great is all that matters!!
Congrats on your sweet bundle of joy! Also i think I've tried to tell you somewhere that your channel is listed as for kids so we can't turn on notifications. Hopefully you can change it. I had no idea you had a few videos posted! 🥰
Oh rly! I will change the kids thing. Thank you so much!!
Amazing video , thank you for posting 😁😍👍👍👍
Tremendous❤
This I would love to have in my home. Is this doable? So much to learn
Yes! I will have online lime courses next yr, the process is very tricky, but once you learn, you can make beautiful finishes in your home 😊
Ha ha. "Modern" people are skewed into their plastic worlds. Not just here in the US but everywhere!
