- 1993 Mr. Olympia. A different approach. A different way. A new standard. A game changer: Dorian Yates, The Shadow.
Many people are using a sport to get some goals they have in life: more money, fame, to become actors and so on.
Others are just focusing to become the best and set new standards in what they are doing.
In this video Dorian explains that his goals are just to become the best bodybuilder ever. To reach his goal, he dedicated 12 years of his life to high intensity training and focused 100% on his career.
For some is important what you do. For others is important HOW you do it. Stay in the shadow, work hard and set new standards.

Fact
Stop hating Dorian Yates was great and the new generation is great too
That front lat spread is legendary
For the boys who criticized Dorian about his comments on the new bodybuilders, here is the reason 😌
Even Ronnie criticised modern bodybuilders over 90s era, he was laughing about it actually on Valuetainment I watched it last night.
Incredible in shape
And the Leg biceps and calves
Incredible
The back not from this earth
Damn Right!
The other guys doing their regular routines with their typical posing songs, and in walks this granite-hard machine posing to techno, stealing the show. What a game changing performance. I love it!
I heard he smelled like butter and cinnamon on this night.
@@JerryRiceBall Maybe he did.. maybe he did.. One would think he smelled like dynamite or something :D
@@armand3484 Lmaoo 😂😂
@@JerryRiceBall 😂
@@armand3484 😂😂😂 man you got me laughing so hard
This guy didnt change. He was just as real back then as he is now.
Another reason Dorian is my favorite is because in one of the most ego driven professions on the planet Dorian never was driven by ego!! I believe that completely!!
I get the vibe from him, that it was all about improving and winning the show, and then going back home away from eveyone and working hard not getting caught up in the fame and photo shoots etc,he seems all about buisness
Perfect music for the moment Dorian Yates showed the world something they've never seen before. Still outstanding today.
Flex viewed this as winning the Olympia. Look how happy he is to come 2nd to Dorian. He knew that Dorian was in a class by himself.
The most inspiring routine of all time, freaky mass but unlike other bodybuilders he looks scary, masculine and actually strong
He also has a good tricep sweep without that ugly swollen bulbous look. Just a really good balanced physique with insane conditioning.
The transformation Yates did from 1992 to 1993 unbelievable
@@doublem1975x the swollen bulbous look is sadly due to synthol. Flex wheeler had it too.
@@JustSujC Ernie Taylor was another
Yeah, but he didn't look aesthetically pleasing to the eye like the 70s bodybuilders. I know because I've trained with him at his gym here in Birmingham, UK. He certainly didn't get women drooling over him.
Still the GOAT physique 93 Dorian. Will never see anything match it. He was just granite and stone that year
He was very good, but ronnie was in another leauge, all by himself
@@WillThomas-hs3oj naw he was too soft man. If you saw them side by side in person Yates would be significantly more hard and he was made of granite. Psycho Fitness said two bodybuilders really impressed him in his lifetime. Dorian and Flex Wheeler. And that man has seen a lot of bodybuilders. I will say by body part Ronnie blows Dorian and everyone else out the water. He was a specimen. He just wouldn’t beat him in a bodybuilding contest the way they are judged. Condition is always the most important aspect of the show. Not mass, though it is important
@@connorclarke1218 lol, you think 99 ronnie coleman was soft? Lol he'll no, I'll give it to you, dorian was prob a tad more conditioned than ronnie in 98 or 99. But even with dorian having better conditioning, ronnie would still win the majority of the poses and was in another leauge, his quads are on another level, shoulders and arms. Back you could go either way but I'm taking ronnie, hams ronnie was on another level to, I think the only shot dorian lit beats him in is the front latspread, all the other front.,side , and rear poses go to coleman,
@@connorclarke1218 I think there only 2 bbers that beat dorian, ronnie in his prime and jay 2001, im lit a fan of dorian, but ronnie at his best would beat him,I think dorian was prob the 2nd best bber ever, bc jay was not as consistent with his looks,
When i say best I mean. Physique not career or wins, if it was that jay woudnt even be on the list,
Flex admitted himself that as soon as he hit next to Dorian in stage he knew everyone was fighting for 2nd place, so that’s enough for me
Best back ever. Hits last pop even from the front like no one’s business.
and side triceps pose
Lat and calve development is beyond exemplary even by todays standards.
Watch some Ronnie footage.
Doriyan had bigger calve
@@fpridgeway Oh yeah..him too. :)
@@fpridgeway dorian had bigger and better both back and calves
@@levanmuradashvili2769 Cavs not back. Ronnie’s back has never been matched even by Yates.
I love from the documentary when Chris cormier talked about dorians early career and how he could hear Leroy his training partner in the audience yellin “ EDUCATE THEM DORIAN!, EDUCATE THEM!!!” 😆😆😆😆
Yes, the physique is mind blowing. But give the man credit-that posing routine was equally impressive, artistic and exciting.
Absolutely!
Dorian (and everybody else) knew all too well that he was unbeatable that night
The best back ever unbeatable.
I don’t think anybody has ever achieved a harder look than Dorian Yates at the 93 MrO...the best...
Believe it or not, Dorian in 1992 was harder, but he was also about fifteen lbs lighter.
One guy did manage to come in heavier and better conditioned that Dorian did in 1993. The first was Dorian Yates in 1995. The second was a fellow by the name of Dorian Yates in 1996.
Dorian at 5 weeks out from the ‘96 Olympia would have beaten many O winners at their peak. He was better conditioned with that extra 15lbs of water than most IFBB champions have ever been on contest day. He actually purposely hit the stage “flat” to guarantee he was as dry as possible. If he had used current standards for conditioning, he would have been a good 15-20lbs heavier throughout his pro career.
18 IFBB Pro Shows.
16 1st place finishes
2 2nd place finishes.
That has to be the best standing as far as total contest vs placings is concerned. Only Mike Francois could have beat him if he had quit after his first 4 shows/4 1st place finishes.
It’s insane how hard his muscles are at that volume. Never been duplicated
I just saw Olympia 22 results…
Dorian can be proud to have achieved such a physic.
30 years after nothing is harder, drier, solid and strong looking!
I thought the same thing, I was thinking the O`s nowdays are lacking in dryness and striation. I think if dorian was around now he would have won easily. Congrats to the Iranian tho.
This physique CHANGED EVERYTHING. History, future... EVERYTHING💪🏼✨🏆 long live The Shadow
yep count the dead before and after Yates
1993 - the year of the quantum leap in bodybuilding. Never before and never after has one single person changed a sport that much.
Would stilllll win this years..., Olympia!!!
No doubt
This was Dorian's best look. 1995 He was close to it, but the damage to his left biceps was still visible. It never really recovered its size and shape. He was an expert at hiding it, but none the less, in 1993 he didn't have to hide anything. Every Mr. Olympia's has a controversial win or two, but 1993 Dorian was unquestionable.
Wow have not heard of the damage to his left bicep before. He was still a monster.
95’ was better but on bodybuilding judging criteria 93’ would be the most unbeatable physique of all time
he was better in 1995 in every sense of that word other than symmetry due to the tear.
His front double was always his worst pose that he very rarely beat the top guys in.
Didn't change a thing in the other 6 mandatory poses whatsoever.
bigger, fuller, more conditioned in '95 than '93 = better.
@@dj_m1999 agreed, 95’-96’ Yates is my favorite physique of all time. Shredded and gargantuan
A real man. Does anything more need to be said?
🌏 To date, and essentially in 1993, Dorian Yates has quite possibly been the most developed man in all of human history, the closest anyone has come to reaching his full potential in terms of muscular development.
The total package. Nothing overpowering anything. And conditioning that is simply unmatched
No one in history of bodybuilding beats Dorian from 1993.He looked like a walking granite.

Best calves of all time
This old video doesn't even begin to do him justice. You see it in person or in todays high pixel video and it would blow your mind.
Best version of him for sure. Arms on point. Looks fantastic from between knees and chest, despite a fairly large waist. He did a great job of prioritizing lower quad development and staying trim in the hips.
I like your name 👍🏼💥
He won the show the second he did that first front lat spread.
The man is a genius, he boiled it all down to what really mattered, he analysed what worked and threw away what didn't, couple that with an iron will and that's the result. Massive, granite structure, and a work ethic I'd be proud to have 10% of. Never fails to inspire me before the gym.
For sure he's an inspiration for anybody in any field.
I'll never forget that I was in the fifth row center it's etched in my memory forever.
Did this video do him justice? Condition and size wise?

I personally think Dorian was one of the best routine posers. It was very thought out, precise and organized with no wasted motion.
Well it was the only routine he did so he should be good at it .

A legendary shape for Dorian Yates. That physique has taken on a mythology of it's own at this point.
Early Dorian had one of the greatest physiques EVER
Crazy improvements in just one year, man doubled his size, the goat no cap
thanks for the cameraman I missed all the important poses
Only time being a mass monster was aesthetic
People rightly mention his lats, but his calves are insane
Also foreams
From 14- 19 years old- I weight trained 3 hours a day, talked to everyone, and messed around. I still worked out hard but by 20 years old I had to change my routine up and do something different Bc I plateaued. I got out my comfort zone and took on Dorian Yates style training. Going hard, heavy, high intensity, 40 seconds -1 minute rest periods and keeping good form like I always did and cutting down my weight training to 4 days a week. Changing up my diet as well. I was so used and comfortable working out 6-7days a week and staying in the gym for so long that it was def a huge shock to me when I cut my workouts down to 45 mins tops, and taking 40-50 second rest periods as well as going down to 4 days weight training a week instead of everyday. I put on more dense, solid mass than I ever did as well as crazy conditioning. And that’s not counting my cardio conditioning I did on my off/training days. My friends who stayed in the gym all day everyday couldn’t figure out why they weren’t gaining. Not to mention their diet was garbage. This is the reason why his style of training is the absolute best in terms of building serious mass and density. However, and I mean HOWEVER, this style of training was a why I don’t work out anymore. I tore my body down so fast and now i have very bad back problems along with tendinitis everywhere. Weight training was my life since 14 years old but i just couldn’t do it anymore by the time I was about 29, and I’m 34 now. This style of training along with a strict diet will get you the dense, solid mass. But it breaks your joints and tendons down fast. That’s why Dorian was getting so many injuries. I wish I could go back and change a lot of things but there was no doubt from 20-25 years old, I was in the best shape for f my life bc of Dorian and his style of training
This dude was an absolute monster. His legs and back are insane.
There might be other bodybuilders who are bigger, maybe with smaller waists, better arms etc but nobody looked so rock hard as Dorian !
Plus he beat them from the back
So true
Dorian Yates once stated that he still was eating around 4,000 calories a day a couple of weeks out of the Olympia, and NEVER ate below 3,000 per day, I believe 3,000 was the minimum. This is why he was so conditioned. He was crisp but full due to having the right nutrients. He was a practical and logical bodybuilder, following science.
The man found the truth between science and gym bro perfectly built the most crazy body and coped hate for it
Peak Dorian. Unbeatable, like Arnold, Lee and Ronnie were in their primes.
4:34 Shawn Ray looking very relieved Flex didn't win before he could. Lol

There has never, before or since, been a 260lb human that shredded. Simple as that. Massive rib cage. Wide as a house. Ultra lean, ultra dry, ultra hard. Look at his neck, jaw forearms, calves. Muscle everywhere. And if he had stopped dieting two weeks earlier he would still have been the driest guy there but he would have been 270+.
No one will ever convince me that anyone, including Ronnie, could have beaten him in 93.

Best body in Bodybuilding History 1993 DY
Back in the day, I thought Flex and Shawn looked like perfection next to other bodybuilders… Except Dorian. Dorian has inferior aesthetics, but the sheer mass, proportions and unprecedented conditioning ushered in a new era of scientific bodybuilding. Probably a dangerous life on the line way to prepare for competition but the judges couldn’t help but notice the impact and stir that his physique created.
They ALL took chances in prep. and probably Flex more than others but i see your point and yes its a dangerous sport, one thing i will say i never heard any Synthol accusations against him like so many others. I think Haney had such an amazing [classic] V-taper with his GOD given tiny waist but Dorian was slightly bigger NOT like Arnold and Zane but bigger so it depends on the judging and what they want. When you see the Blood and Guts you can see the work it took
