    If Flex had won more, today's bodybuilders would likely be very different. All modern bodybuilders are playing the mass game to follow in the footsteps of Dorian and Ronnie because they know that even someone as well proportioned, balanced, and perfectly aesthetic as Flex and Shawn Ray (to a certain extent) can't beat mass.

    Dorian beat everyone for # of reasons.
    1) rock hard bone dry condition
    2) lats Xmas tree
    3) density
    4) skeletal structure. Fluidity
    5) best forearms calves

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  Před 7 lety +30

      I agree with #1, 3 and 5. Xmas tree? Shawn and Flex were just as good in this show: i143.photobucket.com/albums/r136/Romulus32/40012flex_vs_shawn_II.jpg
      And skeletal structure? Not sure what's so special about that other than it's larger than both Ray's and Flex's which allowed Dorian to outmass them.

    • @Tabish29
      @Tabish29 Před 7 lety +39

      Tomn8er I respectfully disagree with the xmas tree opinion. Flex's lower back didn't have thickness or striations as Dorians. Ray is ok but his narrow clavicles are a minus. Which is a segue way into the skeleton topic. Dorian is totally proportionate head to toe. Ray has stubby short thighs and long torso. Flex has narrow clavicles. Plus from the side chest pose his thighs look strange with the pointy knees and he had no flexion in his calves which were already high. The one point where Dorian gets beat is muscle separation.

      Fluidity? Lobsided quads and biceps against the sultan of symmetry? I am not saying he should not have won, but the last thing you want to bring up against flex is symmetry. Pair that with a large waist thanks to his obliques and genetics. His back was the kicker. If he had an amazing back he would never stand a chance. But he had THE back, winning him the show.

    93 Dorian is my favorite physique ever. He looked hard, sturdy and strong while remained somewhat aesthetic. I really like his proportion. Personally, I don't get the appeal of an extremely tiny waist, an exaggerated v-taper or a hollowed-out vacuum. I think it looks weak and weird. Don't get me wrong, I don't like bloated waist either. You look at the body and muscularity as a whole, like a sculpture. You don't look at the glutes in a sexual context. And the good thing about glutes, as well as hamstrings, is that they are the best indicators of just how conditioned the athlete is. In fact, in Flex's case, his glutes and hams became indicators to judges as to what sort of shape he was going to be in on stage.

His conditioning was also pretty spot on this year the only areas that weren't absolutely diced were the hams and glutes. I think that's a pretty good trade off :P

I'm actually EXTREMELY impressed with how Shawn looks here....his legs are completely superior to Flex.

    I thunk The poses from the back tend to carry more weight because the back has both more potential to show detail but it’s also the hardest detail to earn. Ppl can look to be similar condition from the front and they’ll turn around and one guy will be dry and etched and the other is water logged. It may only be 2 poses but it’s also the real test for conditioning AND a great test for completeness because plenty of ppl lack large swaths of posterior chain muscle…

    Cool video. It was a tough call, although I am a big Levrone fan. But yeah Flex was amazing & better to me than Dorian in a number of key poses. I quite disagree on comparing Coleman to Dorian, they were quite different. Coleman in his peak years was quite a bit more aesthetic as well as more massive than Dorian. Coleman in my opinion was one of the most aesthetic BB's that ever lived as well as the most massive. Although Dorian kept a tighter midsection than Coleman. Also I feel Dorian looked significantly better in the famous Black & white photos taken just prior to the Olympia, he peaked early & that was the peak of his whole career before the injuries started

    I first saw Dorian in magazines in 1990. I liked his look--he actually appeared more aesthetic than he did later, being reminiscent of a blonde CA surfer muscle man (so I was surprised to learn a bit later he was a Brit). He was known for lifting some heavy weight, which is something I strived for too in my own bodybuilding training.
    In seeing the review in Flex magazine of the 1991 Olympia, I was impressed with his hardness, vascularity, and overall arm development. I also remember thinking that he looked odd in photos at first. In reading the Olympia article, the person stated that Dorian was so deceptive in photos--you had to see him in person--that he was "light years" ahead of the way he looked in photos.
    In time though, I came to notice something that I think struck you in this video: compared to other bodybuilders in his day, Dorian looked like he was in 3D on 2D media. I didn't really see that effect as much from the other athletes, at least not from all angles like I did with Dorian.
    He had some genetic shortcomings--shallow pecs, tiny rectus femoris, poor leg sweep. Still, he smoked everyone on all back, forearm, and calf development, and was among the best in his day in shoulder, triceps, and hamstring development. While not a ballerina, he was deft at hitting individual poses.
    It is an incredible shame 1994 went the way it did. I could tell he was making gains that year that were later stunted. He had to reinvent himself a touch, and showed up in unbelievable condition for the 1995 and 1996 Mr. Olympias (with the latter having diuretic testing). He may have been gifted a title in 1997.
    I felt he was the first Mr. Olympia to really take the sport to a new level post Arnold. Haney had great conditioning, though his muscle shape, posing, and mass didn't make him feel like an 8-time Olympia winner in relation to Arnold's 7 titles. On the other hand, it feels like Arnold and Dorian won 10 each because of how dominant they were.
    Nice review of one of the greatest moments in bodybuilding.

Dorian Yates said he pictured that as a kid (the sun glasses, tanning etc) but when he did his first show in the U.S (Night Of Champions) were he placed 2nd to I think a small Egyptian Bbuilder (can't remember his name ATM). He qualified for the Olympia. As the show was going on everyone saw how amazing Dorian look, didn't know who the hell he was but quickly got fans to cheer for him, and how he should've won. Everyone started chanting for him (typical New Yorkers I would know as I was born and race in NYC.. Still here) saying Dorian! Dorian! Dorian! Phenomenal contest. I was lucky enough to be there in person and it was absolutely epic. Beyond belief. In person, Dorian was simply astounding. Just sicker than fuck. Flex was the most outrageous rookie to ever hit the O up until this show, even outshining Kevin from a year before in Helsinki. In my opinion:
    Dorian had some of the greatest triceps of ALL TIME. insane development and kick ass unusual shape. So his side tricep to me is matched only by Paul DeMayo, but Dorian's conditioning in the legs blew Paul away. It's really amazing to look in retrospect that Dorian's best years were (to me) '92 and '93. I didn't mind his look in '94, he was definitely a little bloated but still looked impressive and of course '95 he was hard as hell but the bicep deformity just ruined the later years for me. I never liked his '96 showing at all; I thought he looked wayyyyy too emaciated. The fullness was just not at all what was necessary against the monstrous Nasser that year. Nasser was simply killer that year in my opinion in Chicago. But I totally agree with you on one major thing: to me, Shawn Ray is one of the most underrated body builders ever to hit the stage from 92-99. His best years to me were '93, '95, and '99. '99 being his best and '93 his second. I didn't see the hype of '94 at all and though Kevin should have bested him that year. But Ray's symmetry to me was superior even to Wheeler. Wheeler had cooler AESTHETICS, but symmetry wise, Ray was missing nothing and proportions were literally perfect. Great reviews on these golden year videos. I miss the sport of this era. Today's guys can't pose for shit, their proportions blow, and the conditioning is a fucking joke. Amateur shows are even more nauseating. The lack of posing ability alone makes me never want to attend another amateur show again.

    5:00 "body building is pretty much two things. Mass and conditioning."
    Now that is someone who understands bodybuilding and how it is judged. Aesthetic's are awesome, symmetry is great... but, if you want to win you need to come in big and shredded. I'm not saying that it is being judged correctly but I am saying that if you here someone say bodybuilding is mainly about mass and conditioning chances are that person understands the sport and how it is judged.

    Flex has used synthol in his arms it showed especially in 1993 with that epic video of his best shape and ever...but I gotta say Flex used synthol perfectly it made his bellies even rounder and didn't throw the symmetry off but you can still tell there is something going on in those arms
