AnT wOorD I understand both sides. I think she means the “hyper-nit-picky” types. They interfere every 2 minuets with more “instructions” for the artist and tell them they’re doing it wrong etc. If it is wrong yeah speak up, but if you agreed and wanted the stencil the artist designed and then pick it apart what is the artist supposed to do? Change it mid-tattoo? Picky is what you SHOULD be, but be picky during the design and placement, after that don’t nitpick. Obviously if the artist is NOT doing your tattoo how you agreed then say something, but don’t do it during the tattoo that’s being done how you agreed for it to be

jessica pattinson while this is true. Time is also money. If an artist spends 3 hours stencilling and has a full day packed it's a mess of a day. While placement needs to be 100% perfect, trusting your artist to make you look good is also really important. We DO want the tattoo looking good at the end of the day. Tattoo rescue shows seem to have generated a large community of jaded customers , even tattoo virgins. It is weird and that relationship between artist and client needs to be established.

    • @SpiritLopRabbitry
      @SpiritLopRabbitry Před 6 lety +90

it still isn't the tattoo's decision on where the tattoo is placed. Honestly I could care less if the tattooist has other clients. They aren't working on those clients right now. They're working on me. If I don't like the way its placed, yeah, I want it changed. Im not saying changing the stencil, im just saying change the placement.
any GOOOD tattoo artist will say
" we can change the placement as many times as you want until we get it too a good position you like since its going on your body for the rest of your life".
Both of my tattoo artists have said that line to me. a GOOD tattooist wouldn't give a fuck, because they just want their customer happy.

    • @LincolnTheLabrador
      @LincolnTheLabrador Před 6 lety +8

      Zoiyee cx yes yes yes!

    • @av4536
      @av4536 Před 6 lety +8

This is very true, pleasing the customer is hugely important and getting it in the perfect spot IS the goal. (this being said, Artists can refuse the right to placement... for example, hands feet necks, usually are places that fade or look awful as they age. AND some tattoos will take your employ-ability down greatly. try getting a bank job with a neck tattoo. art you going to buy $80 concealer, so you can paint yourself every day so you don't get fired? most people don't think that far ahead when they want something on them.)
But I think some of the issues currently are that there is a bit of a breach of TRUST, and Customers respond negatively to Artist incites or experience, when they want to help make the best product (usually because they saw that kind of behavior on a tv show so they assumed that TV was in fact reality) The point is it is a team effort in the process of getting a tattoo right. IT IS NOT ABOUT A POWER STRUGGLE. despite what media would have you believe.
for example. I'm not going to put a pretty portrait on any muscle ditch or weird valley in the body of a jacked dude. you pick a nice flat spot that the image isn't going to warp and turn pretty lady into Igor face when they flex their arm.
One of the things we are trained to learn, is how to compliment the shapes of each person individually. hips legs arms, fat short tall. We want you, as a piece of art, to be awesome when we are done. Yeah, I can see it being picky if you are only getting little five minute bangers on your wrist or whatever. Those tattoos take longer to stencil than they do to tattoo every time... and... almost any one can do them. but that is beside the point.
The danger of this divide, is that this leaves a lot of very good artists throwing their hands in the air and doing bad placement options, because it is what the customer insists on. Bad sizing, bad ideas, bad placement, shouldn't have to be an option for a good artist, or an artist who wants to put out good work. IT is also about respect, both for the artists and for the process. If a client becomes bossy about a design early on, it can derail the project very quickly.
I honestly still cringe at some of the tattoos my clients have made me do (very reluctantly) , because I know that those designs have my name on them. (the worst part is, it is usually these situations that you hear of an artist later being bitched about. or saying that the artist was crap, or that the artist didn't listen to what you wanted. a lot of complaints come from clients who simply don't take the advice their artist attempted to assert in the first place.)
Being a good artist is about caring for their end results, and it is a very weird place to try and find balance in.
I have definitely learned that sometimes breaking a clients heart is much safer than letting a bad tattoo roam free. When an artist has incites on an idea, you really should try to trust them and their experience a little bit.

There are two sides to this as with most things
Like if you want pop culture, or a band logo, that's someone else's work
If the art was paid and made for the client by someone, then the client wants someone else to tattoo it.

Totally agree with all of these except #10. It's something that is going to be on this person's body for the rest of their lives. If they get the stencil put on, and it looks different than they imagined or they don't like the placement and they want to tweak it, I don't see a problem with that. All I've ever done is made mine bigger, but if people want to make small changes to the original sketch to make it exactly what they want, they deserve to. Like you said, good tattoos aren't cheap. They should get what they want for all the money they're putting into the piece.

+Astarte Astaroth Have you ever gotten a custom piece? Where an artist sketches something up for you from your ideas? They usually show you it when you show up for your appointment. You may love or hate it, and want to change what they did. That's their job is to create art for you that you like. For a good artist you're paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for that piece, a little inconvenience to them to change the sketch shouldn't be an issue. Not everyone wants to just pick something off a flash sheet or copy something they found on the Internet.

And in the lobby you have to either be waiting for an appointment, or waiting to book an appointment. If you're not old enough to get work done, you're not allowed in the shop. No exceptions. You get the odd parent that thinks their kid is a friggin god, but other than that our clients are super appreciative.

April Mckenzy It’s still stressful to the artist tattooing you. Sitting quietly or not, the artist will still be uncomfortable and constantly looking over at them to make sure they’re not going to get into anything or touch anything they shouldn’t be. It’s not recommended to have a kid sitting in an operating room for all the same reasons it’s not recommended for them to be in a tattoo shop.

Art is copying stuff... with a twist sometimes I guess. Depends on whether it's realism, impressionism, etc etc, or your own twist. I mean I guess abstract isn't copying... The point is, most tattoo shops don't have great artists... So if I bring in a design, whether it be my own or one I found, I would expect it to be done. With a stencil especially, there shouldn't be any complaining.

Like others, I don’t agree with #10. However, if I wanted changes after a stencil that I agreed to is applied, I would pay for the artist’s extra time. I have a right to be happy with my tattoo, and the artist has a right to get paid for anything out of the scope of the normal tattooing process and quote, including multiple revisions.
I don’t think it’s right to get upset with a client if they don’t like the look or placement of a potential tattoo once the stencil is applied. It’s their body, and their tattoo, and they shouldn’t feel pressured to say yes to something they are not confident about for fear of upsetting their artist.

Damien Brafford - I don’t consider it a waste of the artist’s time if I am paying them for it. As I said, if I ask for revisions after the stencil is applied, I would absolutely pay for the time and effort it requires. Sometimes it is hard for people to visualize how a tattoo will look in the chosen location before the stencil is applied. I see nothing wrong with someone changing their mind, as long as the artist is compensated appropriately. The customer is not always right. But they are paying for a service, and it is the artist’s responsibility to do what they can to make sure the customer is happy (within reason, of course). If the tattoo artist is not amenable to changes in order to please the person paying for their service, then they should find a different line of work.

I've had my tattoo artist refusing to start tattooing me until I was completely sure where and how I want the tattoo to be, he even showed me a tattoo he had on the same place I wanted to get mine on to get an idea of how it's going to look according to the position of my arm etc.

When I got to my appointment he showed me the design and I started crying because it was better than I could've imagined and he gave me a discount since I told him price didn't matter this was my final step on overcoming my struggles. He was amazing and the tattoo is better than I could've ever thought since I told him the basic idea of what I wanted and he made it mine and perfect.

Oh man, all of the things I've wanted to say to my clients... I've been tattooing for twelve years now, in a shop and also solo, and I can totally relate to most of these. I'm glad someone was honest enough to put it out there so that maybe people will keep things in mind the next time they go to get a tattoo. Having said that, I've also gotten tattoos from several different artists, so I've been on both sides and can understand how the client, as well as the artist, can do things that would come off as annoying. When I was getting my back piece done, my artist was the one who wanted to have a bunch of loud friends hanging around and take a twenty-minute smoke break every half hour while I just wanted to zone out to some music and get the thing finished, so the boat can definitely rock both ways on this one. I think the best advice to both the client and the artist is just to be kind and considerate to the other person, because really, there's a level of discomfort for each of you.

There were two or three shops and I contacted them about general prices (sit-down fee, etc.) and was answered by both. I sent a few photos of some ideas that I had and only one contacted me back. I was given a reasonable estimate, told them when I'd be coming to Murphy, that I was bringing friends who may or may not also want to get some ink done, and everything was Gucci. On the day we were to arrive, I get a Facebook message from the shop telling me everything was ready for our arrival, what time were we expecting to be there, and they even told me to travel safely (we were driving through the mountains of Georgia) which was so sweet and thoughtful.
At the shop, I found out that they had recently opened, so I was happy to help a new business. The guy, Benny, was hilarious and constantly cracking jokes. His wife was pregnant and so sweet. They worked together, she setting up appointments and him tattooing. We watched Star Wars Rogue One as we waiting on the stencil (I had a quote and wasn't sure what font and there was the placement of the tattoo itself. He wanted to make sure everything looked good where it was gonna be placed).
While i was getting ink done, my friends were on the other side of the wall of his area watching. One of my friends (who always makes a point to make me laugh during times i'm not supposed to...like when i was having my Monroe pierced...damn her Cher impressions...) was making me laugh and I knew my body was shaking and apologized. He said it was no problem and kept going. He was a talker anyway and we all just sat there having a conversation as he's doing my ink. Everybody would watch and comment on how good it looked and how the colors were nice or how the font was pretty...he didn't mind it one bit and tbh I think he would have been weirded out if we had been quiet the whole time....
By the way, if you're ever near Murphy, NC or just wanna go, Ink Nerds is the best...ask for Benny :)

People are different, and tattoo artists are people. Some like to talk, some don't. Some need quiet to consentrate to their work, some don't. So just find a tattoo artist that suits you. My tattoo artist don't talk. Only things he says during tattooing is when he wants me to change position. So I have a book to read while being tattooed :) And I love his work :)

For me is more usuful when people bring me pics of cakes they like or details they like so i can compose a personalize cake for theyr taste but if you show what you dont like is useless and if you dont like anything how can i make something you gonna love?? I haven't gotten a tattoo yet but I plan to soon and if my tattoo artist is like her I don't want her near my with a sharp object that she could easily hurt me with or fuck up the art (that last comment isn't based on her character I just have bad trust issues)

People on their phone move, and aren't paying attention to the artist, especially when the artist is trying to talk to them.
People who bring too many friends can fill up a small shop, bump into other artists, make it harder for the artist to move around. And be VERY distracting.
Parents try to make the kids do things the kid doesn't want, or talk them out of something creative and orginal for something more common.
There is a difference between knowing what you want and micromanaging. If you did your reaearch, and choose a good artist you need to trust them to do the job you hired them for. You can't tell them how to do their job.
Again, laughter moves the whole body. Do you want a clean tattoo, or to joke around and hang out?
All she wants it people to think and be respectful. That's not asking a lot. And if you can't do those basic things, or you think asking for them is a big deal, either you're a spoiled brat, or a person who shouldn't get tattoos because they can't understand basic concepts like a moving person makes a wobbly line.

As a music producer and sound engineer I can relate and understand your frustrations, specially when clients don't express very well what they want, and make you back track a lot of the work done, but at the same time I wanna smack you across the face.
If you're making a business out of this then you gotta leave your artistic ego out of the picture.
I make backing tracks for a living that are later used for Karaokes of pop music, so my job is to copy other peoples songs to the highest of details, to the point of almost not noticing mine form the original. Basically I'm a specialist at being a "Copy Machine". That's ok because THEY PAY ME TO DO THAT!
I don't even like pop music, I never listen to it outside of the job, I like metal and heavy music. So If I feel like I want to express my own art somewhere and make my own original music I do that with my band, where no one pays us and we just do it for the love of music.
There's a big difference between a client and a friend who's whiling to let you use their body as your canvas where you can express yourself artistically.
Edit: sorry if it comes off as rude, if anything I only wanna help you separate the two in your mind, I know it helps me.

I mean, you could ask an artist politely "hey could you go over that a bit straighter" or "could you please fix that up a little bit"
however dont be a know it all like, "a good artist would do it like this" or "could you make your lines any straighter!?"
I think it's all about your wording and being polite. ask questions because it makes you seem curious, meanwhile stating "facts" makes you seem know-it-all

As a tattoo artist of almost 20 years I've learned fun ways to deal w difficult clients but the main thing that gets me is "I don't know" & "what do you think?" on endless repeat. My favorite line I use is "if you don't know, I have no idea where to start" It also doesn't matter what I think of your choice. My job is to do awesome tattoos and advise on what not to do - not make YOUR life decisions.

Maybe they’re looking at the tattoo a lot because it’s a fascinating process and unusual thing to do. Maybe they want to bring a friend to calm their nerves and share a big experience with someone they care about. The thing about them tanning or smelling though I get you that must be so irritating.

the fact is that tattoos been around longer than you where here , the fact is that artists have pride in what they do . the fact that a artist spent years and years and years perfecting the style they doing has nothing to do with you , you are the one walking to a shop , you are the one who likes what you see from the artist thats why you are there . so no it has nothing to do with you other than you choose a artist you like and you listen to that artist , that how you get the best work done .

I agree that you go to them for a specific style but if someone wants a simple piece that is easily doable and they want to get it done there because of whatever reason, they should be able to do so without feeling guilty.

HomemadeINSTYLE now in fairness, not every tattoo artist is starving to do your tattoo. Artists of a certain caliber or established as extremely good in a particular style or specialty will often only do tats in that style. The artist should clarify early on and upfront if they only work in a certain style same way people need to understand to find an artist who tats in a style that they are looking to have done. Stop rolling into the local tat shop and expect all the artists to do what you would like done.

Most of the artists I've met when going with friends and trying to find the right place for me were super nice and just liked hearing you out and doing what you wanted.
My only word of advice is to get a tattoo in a place you know you can cover. Don't get in somewhere that can discourage you from getting a job, maybe get one on your ankle or anywhere that gets covered by clothes without much effort.

*It's about people that change their minds about the template AFTER the stencil is put on the skin, and want to change small things, so you have to go and make another one. - what i wanted to say :)

2Pac71x96x14 it doesn’t matter, if you’re paying for something permanent it needs to be done right the first time. So id rather spend 10 mins bucks for my tattoo to stenciled on correctly or send a few weeks perfecting my tattoo design than spend forever with a tattoo i hate and spend hundreds to thousands of dollars to get it removed or covered up.

Demetry Blair "or spend a few weeks perfecting the design" which is exactly the opposite of what a person who would be a number 10 client would do. A 10 would just walk in, say "I want this" and once the stencil is done go "You know what, I think I want this instead" which, in the long run, would indeed be annoying as all hell, especially if it happened over and over again with the same client.
If you are not 100% certain what you want tattooed on your skin, maybe you shouldn't jump into getting one just for the fun of it.

Yes that's the point. When the template is done and the client is satisfied with it, the tattooer THEN will make the stencil (because the client obviously agreed). And after some time when the stencil is on the skin and you want to change small things.. well, congratulations. You belong to the annoying people categorized in number 10. :D

Very good and useful advice I really like this video I see this very commonly around the shop especially groups coming in and trying to change the tattoo when they arent even getting the tattoo done ... or those clients that think they can run stuff or ask about something that is really over there head and isnt worth explaining

I love this. Im just getting the roses on my back re-done and i agree with them all. Seen em all happen too. This time ive told my artist that once my roses are done and my cover up poppies are in she can do what she wants with the free space. I trust her and its already looking amazing. I am a fairly easy going client tho and i do my research before deciding on an artist and studio. X
