    Arriving 15 minutes early is normal behaviour in any appointment based industry. Getting annoyed at a client for that is not necessary, a simple "hey I'll be with you shortly once I finish my break" is fine.

      Yeah that bit of the video peeved me off. I've always asked is it okay if I'm like 10 mins early but I'm more than happy to wait till my appointment start time. My job has engrained in me time management skills as I've always had to be early to medical appointments or risk losing them so I legit can't be late for a dang thing. My artists have always been like "yeah that is more than fine. We have a lovely little area you can sit and chill till I'm ready for you". I think communication is paramount with your artist before during and after obv.

    I'm surprised people don't find it rude to have their phone speakers playing something loud in crowds generally speaking. I'm always embarrassed if I'm with someone who does this, pretty much anywhere it might be disturbing anyone else.

      As someone who works in retail, I’ve seen it all. Music blasting, SPEAKER phone calls, and just generally having a call while I’m actively ringing them up. Like… can I have your full attention? I’m a human being trying to give you a service (greeting you, asking if you want something double-bagged, if you want to keep the clothes hanger, etc), please don’t treat me like an emotionless robot that is scanning and bagging your groceries.
      People are saying gen-z is lazy and doesn’t want to work, but in reality we are fed up with being treated like garbage for a measly minimum wage. This went off the rails, but yeah. 😅 I obviously don’t have experience as a tattoo artist, but any service industry is going to have some *interesting* customers.

    After I did one of the annoying things (showing up too early) - I realized my bad. I showed up about 20 minutes early, being perfectly happy to wait (because the shop was an hour away and traffic and I didn't want to be late) - but the artist saw me and came "storming" up to me (from way in the back of the shop!) and was like, "you're here early and I'm working on another client and I can't see you right now". I was shocked at how irritated she was at me and tried to explain that was no problem at all, I just didn't want to be late. I had never seen her before and had her whole afternoon booked. So, I left and went to a coffee shop and came back 25 minutes later. Luckily, I ended up getting a good tattoo, but I never went back. I realize now that it was like inadvertently putting pressure on her - but jeez.

Like, from the outside, it's just random segments of constantly rotating sound with no context at all. It's especially annoying if you have sensory issues of any kind. I think it’s actually good to show up 5 mins early to an appointment, but no more than that. That gives the artist peace of mind to know their next client has arrived and won’t be a no show or be someone who comes late and cuts into the time needed for the work. And in that five mins, it gives the client a chance to do any necessary preliminaries and chill before starting the prep.

It's ridiculous though to say never show up early as most people are adults and are capable of sitting and waiting quietly for 15 minutes, the tattoo artist shouldn't feel bad about that.

      I understand where you are coming from, but on the other hand, prices of tattoo artists can in just one city vary vastly. It depends on how big your brand is, if you are in a saloon, or alone, what is your style, how many years of experience you have,... And trust me, tons of people experienced the unpleasantness of asking a price too low and getting ridiculed by the artist for not appreciating their work and material etc. So it is often better, especially if you are afraid of shooting way below the artist' minimum and creating it awkward for both of you, to just simply ask about the minimum. Luckily I've seen more and more tattoo artists in my country to write it on their web or social media, what is the bare minimum; that definitely gives a hint. So, I am not speaking for all people :D, obviously, but I ask for a little bit of an understanding from the other side, too. We value our tattoos, but if there is more good tattoo artists and we like their work, just have a certain budget, logically we scout for the one who can do it within our budget.

      I feel this one, haha. I truly want to pay AS MUCH as I possibly can, but I just don´t have that much money. I have to save up for quite the long time for every new tattoo. I know that it´s an investment, you pay for good results (as a rule of thumb). I´m just always anxious that they will think I want to get discounts, not ip etc., but truly I just have to know if I can afford it properly or if I should save up more. Anxiety, ughh..

    I don't agree with not showing up early. I'm not expecting to start before my appointment time, BUT I do expect for my appointment time to be respected and to be seen at said time. I show up early so that you know I have arrived and you bring me back at the established appointment time. Of course we understand that they need to take breaks and set-up their space, but as you mentioned, that should be booked into their schedule. It should not run into a client's appointment time. What's the point of an appointment if it's not going to be honored?
    I stay away from businesses that keep their clients waiting. A clients time is precious too, and the accorded appointment time is established because it is the best time for both the artist AND the client; not just the artist.

    • @katesperinck1401
      @katesperinck1401 Před 9 měsíci

      There are many legitimate reasons why a service provider might be running late, and it's not because they don't respect your time. I get if you've never worked a job from this perspective it's hard to understand but the tattoo artist, doctor, hairdresser etc. running late is not the equivalent of you being late for your 9-5 office job. Your attitude comes across a bit ignorant and naïve and 100% the type of client most would be perfectly happy to see walk up and leave.

    • @starc7691
      @starc7691 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @katesperinck1401 I work in Healthcare, and it is NOT ok to run late there either. We actually have a 15-minute policy. If we haven't seen the patient within 15 minutes of their established appointment time (which I think should be lowered to 10, honestly), they can reschedule or cancel all together without incurring consequences. It's not ignorance, as I experience both sides. We respect our patients' time, and when I am on the other side, I want my time to be respected as well. And I'm not saying that you can't run behind once or twice. But constantly? No. People who make excuses sound entitled. You are being paid for your services. It is your job to meet people's expectations, and that includes meeting them at the time you BOTH agreed upon.
      Your attitude comes across a bit arrogant and entitled and is 100% the type of service provider I avoid. It's very easy to say, "the type of client most would be perfectly happy to see walk up and leave" when you charge a deposit beforehand and refuse to give it back if the client arrives too late, cancels or reschedules at the last minute (even if it's YOUR fault). It's a win-win for you. It almost seems like you WANT them to leave so you can have free time and get paid anyway. Of course, you'd make them wait. FYI, that's not a good look, and the stricter you get with your booking policies, the more demanding clients will become of their time. Have a nice day.

    • @katesperinck1401
      @katesperinck1401 Před 9 měsíci

      @@starc7691 You see this is what I mean, you are acknowledging it's perfectly possible for a provider to be behind schedule by stating "once or twice" but added "constantly" as a qualifier just for the sake of arguing. In reality your comment I replied to had no room for any nuance of why somebody could be late at all. I don't know if anybody has ever told you this but you aren't the center of the universe, and people with this mindset honestly tend to be disrespectful arrogant clients that are best not seen at all to begin with.
      We've both established an agreement there are perfectly valid reasons why somebody might run late. If I ever do for a client, I apologize, and 95% of the time that's the end of it and we proceed like adults. If you perceive this as disrespectful, that's just on you.
      And you might work in health care but you've clearly never worked a job where you get paid as a contractor and small business owner, and I can promise you deposits are not free money, they are a very small compensation for lost income. you don't understand why deposits exist in the first place it seems. Deposits exist so that the provider can have trust that you'll bother to honor the booking at all, and no you aren't entitled to it when you don't turn up, or have an attitude problem.

    • @starc7691
      @starc7691 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @katesperinck1401 From my original comment: "I stay away from businesses that keep their clients waiting." There's the nuance you said didn't exist in my comment. The implication is businesses that make a habit of running late; not the rare times there's a valid reason for running late.
      I know I'm not the center of the universe, but it sure does seem that you think you are. Why is that?
      I don't own my own business, but I help manage one, and we never expect a patient to honor a policy we aren't fully honoring ourselves. I know exactly why deposits exist. We charge them in healthcare as well. The difference is that we do not use them against a patient to force them to sit and wait if we run late because if they leave or reschedule, they lose it. We don't punish the patient for our failure. What you do is unethical.
      You continue to attack clients who don't agree with you. YOU are entitled. You'd happily charge your client for running late, canceling or rescheduling (all of which I agree with as long as the failure is on the clients part), yet you expect them to be ok waiting past their appointment time for you. You do understand that you entered into a contract when you made the appointment with the client, right? You say that I don't understand why deposits exist. Do you? The whole point of a deposit is to charge the client a penalty fee for breaching said contract. What do you give a client when it is YOU who breaches the contract? Do you pay them for their time? Nope. Do you give them a discount? Nope. Do you add that time to the end of their appointment and run well into your next clients appointment? Unfortunately for the next client, sometimes. But most of the time you do what you can in their remaining scheduled time and then add an extra hour (or whatever you need) to the overall time it would have taken you to complete the work and slap it onto their bill. You're a hypocrite and not a very good business owner.
      And I'm done discussing this with you. You called me ignorant and naive and implied that I was a bad client before I even responded to your first comment. Then you continue to intentionally ignore a client's perspective and blame it all on their "bad attitudes" because you want to be right whilst accusing me of adding words for "the sake of arguing." Take some accountability. I truly hope you have the day you deserve.

    I had an artist do 6 tattoos on me; she was working on the 7th, when after she finished the main part of it (frankly, the tattoo looks great even not finished to the detail that I wanted) I had to tap-out. She got so angry with me! I was going to set up another appointment to get it finished, and she said she'd be on vacation for 2 weeks, but I should pre-pay for the session, and we'd figure out a date when she got back from her trip. So I gave her the $200 in cash, since she said her credit card machine wasn't working, and then I never was able to get in touch with her after that. So yeah, she ripped me off of $200... SMH. I had a planned list of all the tattoos I wanted to get that I had given her, and we were working on this... Also, I had no idea there was a numbing cream available - I'm sure she had some since she had a huge shop, but she never offered me any. I was always a very good client too - I followed all the rules, and even offered to buy her lunch several times. Anyway, I haven't pursued any other artists - I kinda got down on tattoos after that.

I turned up 10 mins early to fill out paperwork while they were setting stuff up. I was their only client for the day so maybe that's different :) Had a great time though. I'm always early for everything, and constantly told "I'll be with you in 15min", or put to wait for another 10min after whoever it is is done with the previous client without explanation, and not me nor any reasonable person would have an issue with waiting until the time they are scheduled for, since nobody agreed to give you attention before the scheduled time
    It can also be the case that the person expecting you is finishing the last appointment early and will be glad to start yours early and go home before planned. So you get to decide
    If you feel pressure to attend the client immediately after they arrive, even tough it's not their appointment yet and you don't want to do it, maybe it's more of an issue of you working on your social insecurities and/or fear of disappointing random people, rather than the clients having to plan everything around not making you uncomfortable
    I don't think it makes sense to wait in the car when you can wait somewhere more confortable while also letting the artist know that you are already there, if by any chance they want to start earlier. Otherwise, maybe it would be better for everyone to start earlier, but one didn't know the other was available

      Obviously, if you're interested in being polite and making things easiest for your artist, then listening to this advice is the best option. But calling it "annoying client behavior" is kind of weird, especially considering I'm sure late clients are even more annoying since they screw up the schedule for everyone

    • @shawnguinty7778
      @shawnguinty7778 Před rokem +11

      Agree. Obviously anecdotal but I know tattoo artists that will be more upset if you're late for a set appointment than if you're early. If you think you're too early for an appointment, just wait in your car, hang around outside, or check out some nearby businesses until it's closer to the appointment time. On top of that, if you think your artist is rushing themselves, reassure them to take their time and that you're in no hurry. Tattooing is a marathon, not a sprint. There isn't a set time limit unless someone has planned their schedule poorly.

    I freelance and charge what I believe my time is worth, overtime when necessary. Tattoo artists I believe do the same as very often projects have been quoted by the hour.
    Why would some artists ask for tips for tattoos? Doesn't that just show that they undervalued their time to being with? Would tips be considered insulting? Also with such large budgets that run in the thousands, what's the going rate? 20% like at restaurants? Would love your opinion on the matter.

      The way I understand tipping to any forms of artist is that the artist who work with tips usually charge for their time, work and materials, and them you are expected to tip based on the final product, like how much you liked the art, apart of the effort to produce it. Like "here's is the payment for your labour, and since I liked the way it looks so much, here's a tip". Something like that. But I'm not experienced with the tattoo business, mainly paper art

      Well, I think you have to take a step back and think about all the work the artist is doing. For example changing the design on spot if you request it or choosing the optimal size and place for your tattoo. That's all work that needs to be done before you can start tattooing and you need your client to be there. It's like going to a hair saloon and only wanting to pay for the cut and not the washing, styling or blow drying.

      @serendipitylovejoy4724 Před rokem +3

      I agree, I’m not arguing that at all, I would consider that part of the tattooing the actual physical placement of the tattoo you want before work starts. What I’m discussing is the fact that you’re waiting for the tattooist to start work, be it for breaks, food, etc, the tattooist should book her clients around her needs & surely the design, & sizing, should be agreed to before the tattooing in a consultation, you don’t go into a hairdressers & ask them to lop your hair, complete new do without a consultation first, see if you like the person doing the work, if they can achieve what you want, if it’ll suit you, etc, same with a tattooist. Usually when you go to hairdressers there’s “menu” of different services & you pay accordingly. I don’t always have my hair washed if I’m having a trim, making sure I’m not paying for time & products I don’t need. I understand that a tattooist does a lot of preliminary art before tattooing starts as well but that should be reflected in the end per hour price.

I agree with your comment, and I have to add that I (luckily) only had experience with wonderful tattoo artists that charged and worked the way you said. 'Bad' clients exist, but so do 'bad' tattoo artists since both are human, and I do agree that we need to discuss unprofessional artist behavior as well.

    1975 in Queens Cross, Sydney, Australia. I had a tattoo done by an artist in a wheelchair that didn’t have a lot of input. I wanted to have one but couldn’t decide from the choice book. I finally chose a butterfly like papillion in the Steve mc Queen movie. Very colorfully done. Reasoning crossing the equator you get your ear pierced and a tattoo. years later I talked to a famous artist about incorporating it into a new image. He said every tattoo ha a story and I should not change it. I appreciate his input.

    I don’t know if I want to get more tattoos, now. Who knows what other rules there are and if I’ve broken them like I have by arriving a little early. Now I think that my presence in a tattoo shop for one more minute than when the clock is ticking on how much I’ll owe is resented, and I can’t even figure out exactly what I may ask or say without being seen as rude. I guess tattoo shops aren’t as welcoming as I’d thought.

    Oh, I feel much better. I have never been super annoying. 😆 I get everywhere early but I sit in my car. Most shops aren’t that big. I always just figured they didn’t need me in the way. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    The most annoying thing I have ever done was have the artist stop ever 3 to 5 minutes because I was dying. She has given me many more tattoos and has said that wasn’t annoying because I wasn’t screaming or acting dramatic or anything. I was simply not prepared for the pain of the ribs. 😬

      That's really relieving to hear actually. I always take one break in the first 5 minutes and then I'm absolutely fine after and don't take any more (I've not had particularly long tattoos though) and I think it's just a matter of knowing I'm in control and it's a litmus test of "okay, it's fine. They have the needle but I'm in control" but I always feel so bad that it's so early on and every time my artist sees me.

    these are all fairly standard and kinda go across the board for costumer service I think. My personal #1 even though I do know its a natural reaction, when you are tattooing the client looks away. but every single time you break line or dip for ink the second you lift machine. They turn and look and their head is just back n forth. The only way to sometimes break them out of the reaction is to leave your wipe hand holding on them while you dip. doesnt work everytime and they just keep at it for hrs on end 😅

    I can be wrong, but my last tattoo, It was near the end of the tattoo and I asked how much time she think until it was done, I had like 30 min left on the parking, so I needed to know if I had to add time. I've felt the discomfort in her answer, so I think it's a big no-no asking about it.

      @KINNOHA Před 2 lety +4

      Ooh I get that, probably worth mentioning things like parking when you ask so they don’t get the wrong idea but most artists I’ve come across would be more than happy to estimate how long you have left, esp if you are in a lot of pain
