“If I had 3 kids and needed to drop them to school, I’d pick this.”
Marques next video: “So I’ve been testing these kids for the past 5 years now” 😂
If you have 3 kids why do you need a 6 seats car?
@@victorterancas you don't >>need
@@victorterancas kids tend to have friends and teammates that tag along sometimes.
@@victorterancas Why do you need a car this big for anything, other than being an obnoxious Yank?
@@victorterancasyou can’t put small kids in the front. They need car seats. Small cars can’t fit 3 car seats across. Sure, it’s for a relatively “short” time of 4-5 years before they are in boosters and they’d fit. But that’s long enough for most people to want a 3rd row.
On top of being a very cool car. Working for the company has been amazing honestly! They really know how to treat their employees well.
Be prepared to get laid off. Just look at the stock price chart...
Stock price has been fucked and they laid off a bunch of employees. Stay looking!
Rivian is a joke.
@@james7rr23 fair point I’m aware of the stock and the laying off. I’ll keep my eyes peeled and ears open. Appreciate the advice! Just hoping they stay in business first job where I feel like I matter.
I worked at rivian too. For 20 months and I know people are leaving in droves bc they are sick of the shitty management. Anyone good on the floor leaves bc everything they do is a pain in the ass. Same engineers they have had for 2 years+ and very little progress in “ramping” in my opinion. The stock is trash. The cars are fucking amazing but I still don’t see how they can make it without more people throwing money at them knowing good and well there is a high probability it will disappear. The leadership is a joke imo. Not that it takes away from the vehicle quality bc it doesn’t. I’ve driven both and had hands on building both at many levels. Quality is good but that doesn’t matter if you can make them affordable or make enough to sell. I hope they make it for sure but wouldn’t get too excited. If anything a company like Amazon should buy them out and fix the bull shit imo.
Rivian is absolutely killing it. Their ability to ship is great- I hope they can sell enough to start making the stripped down cheaper models that MB was referencing in the beginning.
Killing it? 😂😂😂
They've sold a tiny fraction of the EVs as Tesla. They have no supercharger network like Tesla. They have no Gigapress and Tesla has 3. They brick in Canada weather... won't start and won't let you in. They have no Dojo supercomputer like Tesla. Tesla has millions and millions of driven miles in their FSD computer. When the Cybertruck reaches full steam in January, Rivian is dead and buried... so yeah, "killed by it, not killing it" 🎉
@@yourlogicalnightmare1014why do you want one company to be the only one to succeed?? I genuinely don’t understand why people WANT Tesla to have a monopoly. Not to mention, while this lacks some of the “tech” Tesla has. It’s a lot more comfortable and luxurious. It’s closer to a Mercedes or Audi than a Tesla is.
@RiceCube Tech
I wouldn't have said anything if the comment was "I hope Rivian succeeds."
It's the claim that "Rivian is killing it" that is ridiculous. They dont have a single dealership within 250 miles of me. Tesla has 3 dealerships within 25 miles of me, as well as many superchargers near me.
Rivian MAY succeed eventually, but they have a loooong way to go before they can be described as "killing it"
@@yourlogicalnightmare1014 they could be “killing it” in many ways outside of having dealerships near you lmao. Killing it could refer to their design language. Which they are killing it. But he didn’t say anything about.
They could be killing it in their ability to ship a car, which is what the OG comment said. Which IS true.
He said nothing about how many dealerships or cars, stock price, FSD miles or whatever you said.
He said “they’re killing it” talked about ability to ship then said he wants a cheaper model.
Let’s look at Tesla. Their stock price plummeted. Elon is in some hot shit right now. A large portion of the country hates him (who used to love him) the cyber truck is almost half a decade or more behind schedule. And you’re still clinging on hope it’ll be out in January. Teslas far from killing it either. The only reason they have more sales is through bullshit hype marketing and the fact that they’re just a much older EV company.
@RiceCube Tech
I have zero interest in further debating your astounding ignorance.
Fisker Karma has "great design language" which is a meaningless statement as Fisker has proven.
Tesla has recently installed 3 gigapresses at their factories which will be pumping out Cybertrucks within 6 mo.
Their megapacks are going to be raking in billions of dollars, as will amny other things they have in the queue.
Your thumbsucking complaints are already well known and have been for years, and none of it changes the fact that Tesla is years ahead of the competition by every unit of measure.
If you weren't so whiny, you'd invest every penny you have in Tesla and 10x your money in the next 3 years. But go ahead and invest in Rivian and rely on hopes & prayers 😃👍
Agreed on all fronts! Had a lot of fun reviewing the R1S-considering moving to one from my truck. But I don't think I can-the R1T is just *so* perfect.
I might have to get one eventually if both you and marques are saying good things.

Thanks for your honest review! It is so nice to see you review so many different things and to be mentioned this year with the Apple iPhone opening comments. It just goes to show you that viewers love and appreciate you and your word, and that the mfg’s admire you as well. Nice job Marques! Now if I could just get my hands on one of these at a price the average person could afford it would all be good. Really liking the looks of this and the White and interior amenities as well.
I love how all the driving for the video is filmed right in my backyard of McCarter Highway and Route 280 here in Newark, NJ !
I can't wait for them to produce a small crossover or sedan. I'm excited to see how Rivian develops.
I'd love a hatchback
The waveform podcast just had an episode where marques and the CEO of rivian talked about the r2 platform :)
Yeah I'm amazed every time at how big American cars are. They're like barns on the road!
afaik the next platform will be the same, just a size smaller. Still just SUV and truck.
I don't think they will make crossover, sedan or hatchback this decade.
a station wagon would be great
I do hope Rivian comes out with something lower to the ground eventually like a civic, just because I'd love to get one and I'm more comfortable low to the ground. Excited to see how the tech evolves over my lifetime.
Rivians have air suspension adjustable on the fly from under 8 inches to almost 15 inches clearance. On lowest setting it's quite low for a truck or suv. One of the reasons I like it as I feel the same as you. It's not going to be 5" like my GTI.. but it's also a 7000+ lb vehicle. Really wish I could drive one though, as I await my order.
Agreed, suvs are stupid and unnecessary for most people.
A station vagon would actually be very neat in this suv world.
Agreed. Really tired of these huge lifted cars. If I’m buying a car, I want a bog standard, low to the ground, regular car so I can get stuff done
If only they made Estate (Station wagon) rather than wasting everyone's time and road space with SUVs and pickups.
awesome review w/ really great camera work. These are big! Finally something that doesn't look like the traditional small, rounded crossover.
I'm shocked that we haven't seen Escalade/Suburban/Expedition EVs yet. Americans love them and I think it's a good fit for electric vehicles because people don't care if they're heavy and loaded with batteries. I think that's where EVs are going to naturally go towards, at least in the US.
Yeah the hummer EV is a great idea 🤭
Update Escalade ev is on the way
I feel like Rivian is quickly becoming an underrated company. Considering two R1T prototypes survived a 13,000-mile journey from Ushuaia, South America to Los Angeles, California, USA within 100 days, I'm excited as to how Rivian models will evolve in the future. I'm considering getting one as the first car not borrowed from/purchased by my parents.
The biggest issue, particularly in the southeast as well as more rural areas elsewhere, is the lack of chargers, especially superchargers, however, this is not a Rivian problem but an infrastructure problem, and applies to all EV users in that area.
Someone say trustafarian?

Sure, but only if you can buy a $90,000 car, which is not very many people.
I love my R1S. It's probably the most fun and capable vehicle I've ever owned. I used to be a die-hard Xterra Off Road fan and always wished I could have an electric variant of it. That's what my R1S is for me.
haha yeah of course ya did fella

I really like the hatch/tailgate.this is super smart. Shtuff won’t fall out when you get open and open the hatch to unload.
How do you feel about the safety of SUVs getting heavier and electric SUVs like Rivians that are pushing 7k pounds? I feel like we are ignoring this aspect of SUVs on the road when we deem them "The Best", yet the data argues that they are making our roads less safe.
It’s really sad honestly. They’re so ridiculously dangerous and completely unnecessary for 99% of buyers. Their weight, especially electric ones with heavy batteries, wear down roads significantly more than normal cars. Then like you alluded to they cause a majority of car crashes, kill people at an unprecedented level (especially kids), and otherwise contribute to our cities becoming more and more overrun with parking lots.
Agreed
Don't jay walk in front of one. The squish will be nasty.
@@ALLSTAR284 I see what you did there.
Hopefully, with the rapid transition to EVs, we will also see more people employing great driver-assistance features. We can expect them to hit some inflection point in the used car market in about 5 years.
Rivian is just killing it. Absolutely love my R1T 6 months and nearly 20k miles later.
Seeing all that empty space underneath the first cover layer immediately I thought room for bass but when you pull up the foam omgg more bass
I've heard from other journalists that the driving dynamics can be lacking even compared to the R1T. The rear end, according to them, can get a bit loose, and overall doesn't feel as dialed in even as the truck. Your thoughts? I'd think with air suspension that a software fix could improve those driving dynamics.
I'm so in love with the R1S. It looks insane. It's literally my favorite SUV at the moment. The design overall is so sick. Love what Rivian is doing. I wish I could have one
🤦♀️🤦♀️ u ignored one major fact about this company🤦♀️ It is technically owned by the saudi royal mafia. 🤢🤢🤮 If this is a Chinese company, you would have mentioned that from the beginning, right?! 😒
One important topic that was missed is the road trip experience. A lot of three row vehicles are occasionally taken on long trips and the R1S does not match in range or charging infrastructure. Equivalent or cheaper gas vehicles in the same category can go significantly farther and don't have to deal with broken/slow chargers that occur with non-Teslas.
how often are people going on 400 mile road trips?
Agreed! At least until the Tesla charging network is opened up nationwide to all non-Tesla EVs, I would say the 3 row electric SUV king would currently be the Model X when roadtripping is considered.
True, but then you’re driving an ancient gas powered vehicle. It will take time but the charging will get there. Biggest hurdle is utilities and permitting.
Road trip experience with EV ... It's bad. That's the easiest conclusion. You're better off renting a gasoline car for the occasion you want to do that road trip.
The technology isn't there to make road trips enjoyable with EV imo.
“One important topic that was missed” 🤓
It´s so cool! and i love the blue color on the one you tried out last time....

I think Ford jumped out not because they didn't believe in them but because they are a competitor.
They more than doubled their initial investment aaaand they got to take a $7B write down after the share prices fell so they can use that for tax advantages.
They never were going to be long-term holders of the stock. I'm sure they hoped the market wouldn't have topped out riiiight after the Rivian IPO but I'd say no one at Ford is thinking they made a mistake in their choices.

Rivian is the most impressive of all the EV only brands, in my opinion. Everyone touts Tesla, but they've had LOTS of quality issues over the years. RIvian seems to have taken their time under wraps developing a well sorted platform that was actually ready for prime time when they released it. They've had some minor issues and delays, but nothing compared to every Tesla rollout. They've done well and I could definitely see myself owning a R1T in the future.
Losing money for each car is not something I would consider using that "they've done it right" phase.
@@mateogomez8413 uhh… Tesla was losing thousands of dollars per vehicle produced from inception to about 2019… did someone tell you that car manufacturers are profitable right away?
@@mateogomez8413 what a dumb comment, do you not understand the economics of this business? How is Tesla’s story any different?
@@hobear637 You seem to have misunderstood, it's one thing that it costs you more money to produce a car and then sell it for less, which is a loss per car.
Tesla in 2019 did not lose money for producing the car, the sale price of its vehicle generates profit, they had problems with the production ramp since at that time it was inefficient in China and could not keep up with the demand, problems of Logistics and other factors.

For the meantime, Rivian R1S and R1T seem to be in a class of their own. For large electric SUVs and trucks, I suspect the most viable upcoming competitive set of vehicles will be all the variants of the GM Ultium platform trucks and SUVs. We already have the ridiculous GMC Hummer thing. Then the GMC Sierra Denali and Chevy Silverado EVs seem pretty close to production ready. It's only a matter of time before they start quickly releasing Tahoes, Suburbans, Yukons, and Escalades on the Ultium platform.

I really like Rivian vehicles so far. Loved my SRT Grand Cherokee. When I’m in the mood for a new vehicle, def thinking of grabbing one. Just don’t know if I wanna go with the R1T or the R1S.
I’m team R1S simply because it reminds me of the SJ Cherokee and 1st gen Bronco and Blazer
Also it’s funny since I’ve been cross shopping the R1S and SRT Grand Cherokee for years
After watching the Throttle House video on the R1S, I'd go for the R1T tbh
I have to stick with Tesla for the time being. It sucks because I really want a Rivian, I just can't trust any other EV besides Tesla with the current charging infrastructure that'll take a decade to become reliable. I hope Rivian can survive their financial troubles until then.
Not that I'm likely to use it, but I think the camping feature that levels the vehicle out using the air suspension is so cool 😀.
Yes please RJ, I'd love to get one but can't afford that price tag in Canada here.

love the vids man
Love the video. Could you do a video on Canoo?
Saw one on these on the road the other day -- looks even been in person. Love it. Too much scratch unfortunately.
I do a fair amount of offroading, and I met a guy with an R1T at an off-road park a while back. He could do with his truck probably 90% of the things I could do in my very modified '93 4Runner, and my only real advantage was ground clearance, and the shorter wheel base should help a little with that. I'm sure there's some stuff he could do with all that power that I couldn't, too. So assuming the R1S is comparable, it is even pretty incredible from that perspective (although obviously recharging in the middle of nowhere is an issue).
What kind of doofus would take a luxury truck that costs nearly $100k offroad anywhere? Dents, scratches, and accidents are just a few things that happen to vehicles offroading.
By offroading, I'm not referring to the curb at a local mall... but more of a place like MOAB. The problem with the Rivian is weight, long wheelbase, and width of truck. All of those hurt you offroad, especially on narrow trails. Older vehicles are great for offroad because of a short wheelbase, less length and width (compact size), and parts are easy to repair and less expensive.
@@Panthers89Fan9000000 I've had my R1T a year now and I've taken it off-road a bunch here in CO where I live as well as in Utah, NM and Nevada. It's a beast off-road for a stock vehicle. For the gnarliest of trails I rent side-by-sides, which is the way to go on those types of trails anyway.
As always amazing review ❤
its been 1 minute
This was just such a fun review to watch.
Extremely well presented, thank you! I saw one of these yesterday and was not aware it existed. I have seen a couple of the pickups (ugh, the model names are forgetable), so was aware that the company's wares have actually trickled into my area. From articles I have read and the timeline of manufacturer's, the electric vehicles will be coming fast and furious over the next few years, and with that is competitive pricing. Related to this is the microwave oven which Amana introduced in 1967 retailing at $495. Watch a 50-year old episode of The Price is Right, and an Amana Radarrange was often featured, and quite expensive. It and air conditioners were luxury items in the 1970s, but now, very accessible between development costs and reduced with each unit sold, ever-improving technology. Interestingly, Amana still makes a Radarrange, and it is expensive compared to the ordinary common ones available for less than $100, but the Radarrange is more high end, made in the USA with the associated labor costs, and no where near what $495 in 1967 money equates to today in 2023: $4,000. Around 1980 is when Microwaves started to get a solid foothold in the American home, and soon to be followed by the VCR. Buying a video of your favorite film on VHS was $79.95 in the mid 1980s! In 1980s money!. So indeed, we are living and watching in real time a very obvious transition towards better (longer range) and less expensive electric vehicles. Along with the immediate and plentiful torque that provides performance once beyond even Supercar 0 to 60 times, the less expensive repair and maintenance costs to operate a much simpler machine, and the reduced cost of power (electric charging versus gasoline pump), most of the stumbling blocks impeding the progress of electic vehicles will be removed for the public at large. Yes, price is the last frontier to be knocked down, but after hearing about electric cars for years and considering them a folly, the momentum has increased incredibily in the past ten and especially five years. We are living in some intriquing high-tech times.
I see like 10 a day where I live... can't wait to get mine!

@@venom5809 I agree this vehicle needs a bit of color.. I was between the R1S and Tesla Model X for awhile and after watching A TON of videos I'm convinced that the Model X and R1S aren't direct competitors as they serve different customers. Adventure, off-road, hauling - R1S. Road tripping, daily commuter, tech, comfort - Model X. In the Model X's case, I think a closer competitor would be the EQS SUV, just in case anyone was between the two like I was.

Marques, have you driven the Polestar 2? I haven't had a chance to get in the Rivian but the Polestar was very luxurious to me, and the power from the dual motor was insane.
Great review. I’m glad you explained the high pricing clearly as it sometimes seems as if most electric vehicles are just aimed at the very well off.

Personally, I'm one of the few people waiting for some EV Minivans to hit statewide. They give more interior height than a SUV, and my favorite minivans let you remove the seats, as well as lay them flat. My first car was a minivan, and when I was able to fit my Washing Machine in the cabin, but still have the great subwoofers and other features of a closed cabin rather than flatbed, I've been hooked.

Bravo !! Marques; You are very intelligent and this makes perfect sense... Thank you !! (I own Rivian stock RIVN)
Great vid as always Marques. I think a lot of folks would like to hear how this R1S compares to a Model X. What are the trade-offs between a Model-X vs the R1S? For example, how is the charging situation without Tesla’s charging network?
The only thing in common is that they both have four wheels and a battery. Only half kidding. Not even close. In October I did a write up of both after owning our R1S for 1 month and driving an X for an extended period. The R1S all day every day for its utility, value and quality.
Re: Charging network? I just returned from a trip to the South Carolina coast from Chicago. Charging was nary an issue. Yes Tesla’s headstart shows in the infrastructure but for the 5% use case of charging publicly? Not a big deal. And we have towed our trailer too.
@@philnwafor9140 Super helpful Phil! Thank you the comment. How about “autopilot” on the 2 vehicles? Tesla has been making some pretty useful updates. I noticed a big difference even today with the overnight update we just received from Tesla. Very smooth lane changes on a busy highway, and in city getting better. I really need to test drive an R1S it would seem…
Probably the most attractive EV manufacturer on the market right now, in my opinion. These vehicles look awesome. I really hope Rivian succeeds.
omg the front end is butt ugly..
@@ireneclark4066 1: I said the manufacturer was probably the most attractive, not the vehicle. 2: To quote The Great Dude "Yeah, well, that's just like... your opinion, man."
@@ireneclark4066seriously I have no idea how many people are talking about how beautiful it is. So ugly
The hummer ev looks way better only people that disagree cant afford it
I was really hoping you were going to review that crazy R1S Tent
My adult life is starting to come together and I’m excited because by the time I’m ready to buy a car, these may be cheaper and in my budget.
Also RJ looks like an honest company head, and he be lookin like Steve O.
I have to say, a bunch of the products he talks about I have no interest in, but he makes talking about stuff he cares about so engaging that I tune in anyway. (Same with Linus)
Yeah Linus is a genius at this, I have no idea about anything he's talking about but I just can't look away haha
Am in Uganda... and I don't think I'll even ever see this stuff.
Love the option to have a full spare tire in back. I love that pease of mind and very few cars offer one or even have space for one
It doesn't fit a full size in the R1S. Only a compact. R1T fits a full size though
The shots of Marques when inside the car, driving it. They give me a Don Cheadle vibe... (and obviously that's a compliment)
Hey Marques, love your content. Have you thought of adding metric values to text like the trunk size in 6:55 along with imperial units? I feel it would be helpful for non-US viewers
Google is your friend
You should definitely checkout some electric vehicles in China. They are making some serious stuff. Good video as always!
The trunk features are so cool and usable
I have seen those Amazon vans and I was not aware they are Rivians. Awesome
as someone who owns a Land Rover LR3, I've found it really hard to even be in any other SUV, and seeing this, it literally has all the same features but its a more modern version, like all the space in the back, all the windows...the half opening tailgate...if I had the money I think this would be my replacement vehicle.
The limestone grey on those dark rims looks so good. My R1T has been the best car/truck I've ever owned -- It truly does everything I would ever want a vehicle to do.
Except truck stuff 😂
