We've had the Rivian R1S for 7 months now. We've taken it camping, on long haul roadtrips, and we've tested it though the harsh winters in Buffalo. Was it worth the money? Do we have regrets? How much does a fender bender cost to repair? These are our honest thoughts, a non bias review of the Rivian R1s aka Rivi, aka The McRiv and wether you should buy one for yourself.

As if the company don't know ( just one call to the engineers at the service centre ) . More like hoping you won't be bothered/complain or may even not notice .

@@BeckiandChrisIt looked like a competent paintless dent repair place could have taken care of it for less possibly (and obviously without needing to paint). Knowing the costs to fix the quarters makes me be extra cautious when I am off-road with my R1T. Glad you were able to get it fixed for less than the original quote though.
@@sm308racing4we got 3 different PDR places locally to quote it and none could guarantee satisfactory results but it’d be about the same price so we figured might as well go traditional repair!
For 19k I could almost buy a new cheap car.
Please note that Rivian not having a showroom/service center near you is due to the American auto dealership monopoly that does not allow Rivian to have one near you.
It's about time we start talking about voting out the auto dealership association bought politicians protecting this monopoly; and for EV CZcamsrs to mention it on all their videos to bring more attention to it, as the average American is completely unaware of it.

I have an R1s and just got the spare but payed like 450. It’s a unique deflated tire that fits in the back. The going rate on the website is 800+ but if you ordered the car before the original price increase you can get it for half the price.

We're pretty spoiled out here in Southern California. We even have a Rivian Theater in our little beach town so I see them all the time. Glad to hear they are handling the cold well.
I really enjoyed this video. I own two Toyota Land Cruisers and enjoy camping as well. I would eventually like to replace my fuel thirsty vehicles, and thought I'd hear what Rivian owners have to say about their vehicles. You described all the cool features and quirks very well, and I'll have to think long and hard about the dependency on technology to operate functions that were traditional more "mechanical". 👍👍👍

on the wipers issue, have that problem with my Nissan Rogue. I just don't feel the wiper move fast enough on the highest setting. Try putting some Rainx on windshield, it works so well you hardly need the wipers anymore.
Rainx is awsome. The winter mix is a little more concentrated and makes ice removal easier. I have also noticed if you are getting streaking on older blades, you can clean the dried rubber off the blade with an alcohol pad and then just wipe with some water before letting it sit.
The B&C take on a car video is great to see from you guys. I felt the cold when I saw the snow on the ground.

Great video. We've had our R1S for 2 months now and I'm seeing a lot of the same things you mentioned. We haven't taken it camping yet, but looking forward to trying that out.
Ceramic coating on the windshield will help with the rain. I rarely use wipers as the rain just flies off

@@hed1117 Look into Carpro GForce, Gyeon Q2 View, Gyeon Quick View. Soft99 Glaco Windshield coating is probably one of the more popular ones (besides RainX which is at your typical over the counter store).

The Apple car play is not really necessary. I have already dumped my Apple watch, MacBook and the IPad. Probably even the iPhone in a couple of years.

@@joshua.butler as of 2024, the navigation system is powered by Google. It works very well now.
Very cool and authentic review. The auto suspension leveling blew my mind, and the automatic hood (2024 Tacoma still uses hood props! Not even gas struts). Look forward to seeing more on this car!

Question: how confident does Driver+ Highway Assist perform on the freeway? Does the r1s stay centered in its lane even on more aggressive freeway curves? Thanks!
I have the dash rattle and fixed it with foam for the same reason. The right thumb button on the left side was also problematic but it fixed after a while. The rest of your conclusions largely match. Good to know about the sensors in off-road. PDR is the way to go for minor damage. I had someone inexperienced spot me offroad and ended up with rock rash on a 22 wheel. Car was new to me too. I've painted wheels before and black is super easy to fix.
Great unbiased vid guys and a gutsy purchase , 19000 bucks for a bit of corner damage ( insane) , even 3.5 k stings . Service centre 300 miles away isn't user friendly. Maybe rivian should have mobile electrical engineers for warranted jobs or part service . Even better just move a lot closer to service centre Lol
Ps the seating looks comfortable, here in Europe the french company Citroen make the same patterned seats .
Thanks for your video and I love the wrap you all have in it! Great balanced review of the R1S, and can say we pretty much feel the same about the R1T we have. It has its quirks, but man is it just an awesome vehicle all around. Watching you all glamping in the 1S made me a little jealous even though I love my truck bed.

Chris, here is a piece of information that may be useful for you. A gentleman had a rear collision accident with his R1T and was quoted over $40k to fix it, so he found a shop a little ways from his hometown and drove the R1T ro them and for about $4000 or so, they fixed the truck like new. Unfortunately, nowadays shops are looking to rip people off for everything. Do some digging and research, I'm sure you'll find someone to help you with that fix for a fraction of the cost. Hope this helps man. Great and informative video BTW. ✌️ and love to all.

I feel you brother, here in AZ we wait on average 2 months for service and I live 8 min from the service center. This is the most frustrating part for me and I am kind of tired of this. They fix one thing and creat a different problem, the mechanics are not very well trained and just disappointing experience but just like you I enjoy the power and ride quality. I hope they up their game in the future. I bought a second portable charger and after two weeks I am still waiting to get a return label,🥴🥴🥴you can do much better Rivian.
@Becki and Chris For the rain issue, RainX does wonders in all rain conditions. Most of the times I don't have to turn on my wipers at all because the rain just streaks off the windshield.

New company. Won’t be perfect. My expectations were just that. Must be understanding if you want the newest products.
Had our drivers side Model 3 side swiped in a parking lot. Have always taken to a Tesla certified shop for body work fixes until they were backed up for months. Dent Solutions (Bellevue, WA) did a fantastic job (no bondo). They fixed it to the point that the shop that does the wrap wasn’t able to find the damage.
Have been loving your camping related videos - has been making me want to get back out. Haven't been out in forever and I need to get out.

$19,000+ for a freaking body panel fix??? That is beyond insanity. An insurance broker saying they may not renew you over minor damage is not something to take lightly. That alone actually has turned me off of wanting to buy a Rivian. Thanks for the video, I feel like I just avoided potential disaster.
That makes little sense, I had my entire bunper, bunber assembly replaced, and that exact location with a small dent, fixed for around 2.5k USD (insurance paid for everything thankfully). It's high but not 19k 😅
This is one of the reasons aside from the usability issues that Rivian has taken the wrong cues from Tesla that I didn’t put a deposit on the R2. It works almost perfectly fit my lifestyle.
I’m waiting on some economical EVs from Toyota.
@@JTR253keep waiting, Toyota is all over the place with this. If they made an electric 4runner or anything in their line up it would sell out. Especially the land cruisers; there is a large land cruiser following.

You may not like it but EVs are expensive toys at this point compared to matured ICE vehicles have more than 100+ years under their belt. There were EVs hundred years ago as week when Model T was being made but it lost out to that rudimentary design.
I've seen some incredible paintless dent repair (PDR) work on Rivians before to save money because of the way they are constructed. Definitely recommend checking that out for smaller dents.

Curious if any of these issues have been addressed with their recent deliveries. Looking forward to hearing about the R2 in March.
Every Electric that I've driven has a way to disable the regenerative braking so what I took to doing was turning it on and off when I wanted it to behave one way or the other. It basically became my brake switch. So if I'm on the highway and I'm just trying to maintain speed and not do a lot Braking or slightly adjust my velocity I'll turn off the regenerative braking because their it's actually causing a net loss in energy. If I'm doing City driving and I'm going to be approaching a light that I'm not trying to time that I don't think I'm going to be able to slow down just a little and catch green then I will turn on the regenerative braking. If I'm going down a steep grade and I want a little more positive restriction I'll turn it on then but I don't leave it on all the time that's the real key is knowing when to have it on and knowing when to have it off. That simple trick and my regular driving style let me drive a Chevy Bolt for about 75 miles farther than the estimated range.
Technically, you can not turn of regen braking, but you can change the setting so that regen only kicks in when applying the brake. Unless you are braking aggressively or the battery is at or close to max charge you will be using regen versus the physical brake pads.

usually if you get a big dent you can weld a few small rods in to the dents and knock them back into place, however when it comes to welding on an electric car i assume there's a lot more to prepare before you can weld on it. there are other ways to stick rods on the panels using epoxies or suction cups and knock back the dents this way.

Great news though! A service center is coming to Toronto so it'll just be a quick hop over the Ambassador or Howe (when it finishes)! This was a refreshing take on the Rivian buzz that only the long-term reviews can offer!
If you don't follow Johnny Lieberman from MotorTrend, you should cause he'll post when new software updates come to the Rivian line as he dailies an R1T. Cause I saw the overhauled Quick Settings menu from him, as well as the new "Comfort" mode that came with that update.
Also Apple CarPlay is still coming to the Rivian line, will probably be on all models by the time the R2 comes out. That and the refinements and redesign Apple is doing to CarPlay (look at the Porsche renders), could make CarPlay more in tune with the modern design of the Rivian panel.
I have a $70k 2021 f150 aluminum body hybrid that recently suffered body damage from a large oak tree branch falling on it.. needs a new sunroof, windshield, both a-pillars, both front quarter panels, hood, and some other smaller parts... cost of repair is about the same. Makes me consider getting a cheaper vehicle to repair

Whilst I purchase a lot of products online, a car is definitely something I would drive before purchase. My Brother purchase a BWM i4 M50 and returned it to the dealer as he believed it was just unsafe - I had driven this car, and rejected it if favour of iX3. I agree air ride suspension is a great feature. Also insane repair costs these new companies need to get there dealer networks up and running, even Tesla is rubbish at this, after years.
I don't have any quality issues. I did have someone damage my tail gate fix was 11k through insurance. Love my Rivian ❤️
2 things that stood out to me overall, the podcast thing, I realize it's pretty minor overall, but I do a ton of long drives and always listen to podcasts so that would definitely annoy me allot, the other thing is the wipers, I do allot of winter driving as well, my current car also has the rain sensing wipers but at the same time it also still has the manual controls for when I need to dial it in or override the auto function, this small little thing could potentially be a deal breaker. I realize that these ev brands want to be all high tech and do everything automatically and avoid putting controls in the cars, but sometimes they are needed.

Great video. I am planning on a review of my experience in my R1S in a month, as that will be my one year anniversary. Your video provides some inspiration. I also have a dented area in the same spot as you. I am scheduled to take it in to be repaired in two weeks, and at a non-approved place.
My gripes are mostly things I was used to in my Tesla...but I also assume that these will come in time with OTA updates. I would like to play music from my USB drive. I would like to be able to view the cameras from the app. I am happy we now have scheduling in the app, but also feel it could be improved. Same with the ability to manually set it to condition the battery. On the other hand though, there are things the Rivian does that are heads above my Tesla. Like 360 cameras and no phantom braking.
I have had one major issue...which was a minor thing, but it bricked the car on a freeway offramp. A bit of a scary time, but support was awesome and it was towed 110 miles to the nearest service center where they reconnected the loose coolant line to the battery pack. Argh... which points out the difference in an ICE car that is more analog, vs the EV which is more digital. My only other issue is very minor and will be handled (I assume) once I take it to service (like your situation, not close). That is some extra wind noise from the driver's side window at 70+ mph.
All in all, I do love the car. I am a cary guy and have owned many performance vehicles (and competed in them). The Rivian for me ticks most all the boxes for a good driver's car.
any worries about company performance and how they are laying off people and burning through cash? i am in the purchase phase and having doubts before i actually pay for it
@@chocktalk I am not worried very much. This was all part of the business plan. They had, and they have cash. They knew they were going to lose money because starting up is expensive. There was a trajectory on cash being spent as new products came on line and production ramped. I think some people are over reacting and there is more interest in "news" articles that are about fear and doom. This all seems like the same stuff Tesla went thru and I recall sighing when people told me that Tesla was burning cash and going out of business. Now are there other EV companies I would worry about? Yes. But so far it seems like Rivian is still following a sensible plan. Their ability to sell to fleets in addition to Amazon is a big deal. They are coming out with the R2 and that will be a big deal. In fact, I have it on my calendar because the minute they allow it, I am putting my deposit in on one.
They have done layoffs before. They will do them again in the future. I would not equate that with panic.
I'm an European and I'd really love to own one R3 when they'll release them in 2027.

Pro-tip: Look for a paint less dent removal shop in the future. They probably would have quoted far less than $3500. These masters of their craft can do some amazing work. Almost near perfect repair.
Without a doubt that accident is in the worst place possible on any uni-body vehicle for that exact reason. I am assuming parts are low stock and take a while to get and may impact the price somewhat , that is likely the case when ordering a similar panel from any say German manufacturer.
I have been eyeing one of these though, so please do continue to make updates to this.

FYI self-leveling is stock on Land Rovers with air suspension. Also sonar stays on with off-road mode.
Thought you needed an xlifter to do that?
Definitely no anti collision in off-road mode.
My 2010 Range Rover at least always settled level. I don't rooftop camp, I pitch on the ground, but it was a feature. I must confess my anti collision can be aggravating when off-roading but I can always turn it off. @@BeckiandChris
On the repair cost, I would be interested to know more about the final solution (i.e. was it a bondo/filler, or were they able to restore the metal). Dealt with a similar issue on a Cayenne (fear panel extended to the front portion of the roof). The recommended body shop repair was still around $16-$17k, which entailed partial cut and replace of the panel (required procurement of a new panel).
Long way of saying it may not be an EV-specific issue, aside from the obvious recommendation for what is effectively an expensive (in-house) body shop. I know with certain Tesla's the giga casting can create practical issues despite a design intended to allow repair (and associated high insurance cost).

How many levels of r-gen are there in the Rivian? I have a Hyundai Kona and there are 3 levels so when I am on the hwy and take my foot of the accelerator the car keeps on coasting but I can go to level 1 ,2 ,or 3 to get more or less breaking action. I think it is just perfect that way. Only thing is I didn't use my brakes at all and then I had to have them turned to rid them of excess rust. So use your brakes. At least once per trip.

How was the long haul experience with respect to battery and recharging?

I saw in another video that if you put the vehicle in snow mode it lessons the regenerative braking and stops the lurching.
Can you turn off the regen braking or is there an option to adjust its sensitivity?
Lots of inaccuracies here. I also own the same R1s. Regenerative braking is adjustable to user preference. The compact spare is $450 not $1600 as stated. One pedal driving is terrific and easy to adapt to. Proximity locking has always worked perfectly for me.
Regarding the spare, actually Chris did state it was for a full size not the compact.

I heard that the DualMot version is better than the QuadMot.
Mainly because DualMot are manufactured by Rivian after a lot of researches.
Also you will have rear lock and front lock automatically.
The new R2 will help with the damage in the future. They have separated the panels to be more individual.

This SUV would be interesting at $60k to 65k, not 100k plus. No full size spare tire for a supposed off road is just plain silly. I currently own a 2022 Lexus GX 460 with no fancy air suspension but I prefer the KISS principle. I have to say the camper mode on the Rivian is wonderful, but how many mile range does it eat up after a 8-10 hr night?

What is the wrap?
I know regenerative breaking is great and the new way to drive a vehicle but, hearing about how you say you have to hold down the accelerator to cruise, who really does that? Don’t you just use the cruise control as much as possible? There’s no need to hardly ever use the pedal. The car does it for you. That is how I drive.

Have you looked into mobile service yet? Rivian has a whole fleet of mobile service vehicles that will come to you to perform fixes wherever you are. At least for the minor things (not the body damage).
As for the body damage: I can't even imagine a reputable insurance company telling you they wouldn't renew your policy after a claim like that. We drive a Tesla Model S and have had two accidents requiring very expensive repairs (over $40k, combined), and our insurance covered them without issue and without threat of losing coverage. I'd look into getting better insurance.
These are hardly complaints.... I've been driving an R1t for almost 2 years... 1. The seatbelt warning does'nt beeps, it just completely mutes the music and more annoyingly mutes CALLS mid conversation. Most cars just beep, my r1t mutes everything. 2. I'm 5' 8" and when reversing, if i come off the seat slightly, the car goes into park if it thinks your not sitting in the seat. Makes it hard to look back with my head when the cameras are not enough to backup a trailer. 3. It's very heavy, which really hurts it off-road capabilities especially in snow and mud... 4. Also because of the weight and regenerative breaking (issue with all EV) it goes through tires quickly... 5. The limited top speed of 112, 40mph when lifted, and 20mph when fully lifted max height . also max hight is only usable off-road modes.
Great video. I find a lot appealing about the Rivian R1S and may consider it when I'm ready to buy a new vehicle again. I do hope the prices come down in the future, the same way we saw the prices of computers and flat screen televisions drop after they had been out for a while. A hundred thousand dollars for a vehicle that will rapidly depreciate in value and degrade in quality is a little bit much for my budget. Maybe I'll buy a used one in the future, because I've heard EV prices rapidly drop
