Wife has a new '22 GLI 6MT and I have a '19 Golf R with older MIB2 infotainment. I HATE the newer system in the GLI - takes 15-30 seconds to boot up and do anything when the car is started, whereas the old system is instantaneous. The wireless CarPlay is a total PITA - all kinds of glitchy behavior. Rock solid with wired version in my R. Other than that and the annoying rev hang, we're super happy with the GLI.

Great video!! Can’t wait to see you get a manual GTI to review. I keep watching the manual Golf R video because the lack of rev hang and super short gearing in that car honestly makes it worth the extra money compared to GTI/GLI. I like the physical controls in the GLI a lot, especially compared to the Golf platform.
The lack of physical controls on the GTI and Golf R are a deal breaker for a lot of people.
This interior is light years better than the Golf.
After VW offset its "Wannabe Elon Musk but else mediocre" fromer CEO, i hope the qualitiy as a whole will improve.
Definitely not better than the last gen golf, which really is what this car is.

This actually has knobs and buttons unlike the GTI and this interior looks FAR NICER and more premium in my opinion. coming from a 2015 mk7 golf R, I might consider this.
I love the induction noise on MK7 GTI’s and GLI’s. It’s piped in but it’s not the fake noises coming out of the speakers like BMW that makes me want to drive into a tree to cure my headache from it.

I test drove a ‘19 Mk7 GTI with the stick and forgot how much fun and engaging it is with a manual. My daily was an Mk6 with the DSG. I ended up with a 2017 GTI Sport DSG with same mileage as ‘19 but 9K cheaper. Love the DSG but a stick is so much more fun.
I have a standard Jetta 2006. It's still going pretty good under 160,000 miles
But this car . . . Is the shit.

I have a 2022 GTI 6-spd which does the same thing. Not sure if it's the same with the GLI, but it always wants you to be in a higher gear than you might want to be in. At 35 mph, I might be in 3rd, dash says "5". Really? Maybe this is done for better mileage, but definitely doesn't do much for the fun factor.
The biggest pitfall on this car as stock is the stock tires. Swap in Pilot Sports (summer or all season) and the car leaps to another level. It’s a very stiff chasis which makes it a hoot. The dual personality with the adaptive dampers makes it a pleasure to live with. Fun when wanted, misleadingly smooth when you want it.

Owner confirmed, get real tires with this car, otherwise you will spin, a lot.

tips for downshifting and upshifting more than one gear at a time? also love the videos, ill never skip a Topher video
I always skip gears, usually 2-4 or 3-5. Just rev it higher before you shift. So if you normally shift at 3,000 rpm then rev to around 4500 and skip the 2 gears. As for downshifting through multiple gears, just make sure you blip the throttle pretty heavily and be at the proper speed. You don't want to shift to 3rd at 80mph (This depends on vehicles. Every car is different)

@@MadMike17 Bit confused as to what ghost shifting is. But just clutch in and go into 3rd. Blip throttle before you release (Engage) the clutch and do so smoothly. Don't just dump the clutch, but release smoothly just like any other shift.
Would be interested to know a couple of things that matter to me and I didn’t hear explicitly called out. 1. Quality of the shifter. Good? Mediocre? Poor? 2. How big does it drive? Do you feel all (nearly) 3,300 lbs of mass or does it feel light on its feet?
I didn’t seriously consider this (or the gti) because I wasn’t a fan of having to rely on VW’s build quality and overall reliability. But VWs have usually been fun (owned two different GTIs in the past.
I went with an Si and I know it gives up power to this, but has an eagerness to this that I doubt the Jetta can match. It also possesses a first rate shifter. I know you mentioned a Si review is forthcoming, interested to hear any callbacks to compare to this car.
I got the DSG (I know, I know. But honestly so happy not having to shift in traffic and construction anymore!).
Had mine for 6 months now. I don’t feel the weight. Love the car so far. Couple of very minor things with it but VW have been great at dealing with them.
I don’t hate the steering wheel controls as much as most seem to. In fact I haven’t hit one by accident yet as opposed to on my old jetta w traditional button I would hit them a couple times a month.
Only real issue for me is how slow the CarPlay is. Feels like 10 seconds!
Lowkey want this car for my next one, I drive a 04 A4 B6 Quattro 1.8t 6 spd but I don’t wanna get rid of it😭.
Anyone know if VW is going to updated these infotainment systems soon? Every review shows the laggy response times and, while it wouldn't bother me, I know my wife would consider that a dealbreaker. Disappointing because this seems to have right blend of power (more than Civic Si) and refinement (fun without Elantra N theatrics).

lol, I don’t know who to believe! Matt’s One Take review should be up on CZcams in the next week or two. Considering the difference in driving style and location, it will be interesting to compare it to big Toph’s review. Maybe Matt went into it expecting too much, or maybe the car really does have some fatal flaws when pushed hard. I hope it’s the former because the GLI has been creeping up the list for my next daily and it’s available in real life for MSRP, unlike the Civic SI.
Matt’s take is likely down to the trash stock tires. They fail the car when pushing it extra hard. The chasis is that good. Swap the tires for Michelin pilot sports or Continentals and you have a totally different car. One that lets the chasis and suspension do it’s work.

I see the non GLIs all over the twin cities everyday. The economics of that segment don’t make that trim hugely popular with the GTI being the same car but more practical.

I still think my 2004 APR'd vw jet gl 1.8t 5 speed with 250k miles has it beat handily, also no warranty to void.
It definitely doesn't. My stock mk7 gli is way faster than my stage 2 1.8t from '04.
Does the dash just vibrate in sport mode or all modes? A lot of owners say the dash rattle is from the soundaktor, but it only vibrates enough to cause a rattle in sport mode.
Mine did but it was the fuel lines under the passenger seat which was very noticeable. VW just put some extra insulation in and it’s great now.
If I have it in sport mode, and hammer it there is a slight vibration but no th inch crazy. I don’t usually put it in sport mode as the piped in engine noise is a bit much for me personally.

When you shifted into 1st at 36mph and 3,000rpm I was so scared for the car. My Si's would never let me do that even with a good rev match. Shifting into 1st at anything above parking lot speeds feels like you're forcing it. Is it just a Honda thing? I've seen you shift Porsches into 1st at higher speeds with ease as well.
Not a honda thing, in my 370z (base; no auto rev match), i literally can't put my car into first if its going faster than 5km. I think it has to do with the synchro's being weird going into first, and if you try and force it, it grinds the gear.
GLI shifts smoothly down-shifting into firat from 15mph, wouldn't try it at 36mph.
After the last GLI, I can't get into VW again. Especially, with how crappy the Soundaktor is. I ended up trading up from my GLI to a Scat Pack and....wow. it's amazing.
Soundaktor easily disconnected, or coded out with OBDeleven or VCDS.

@@buildmorefarms1007 Nope, when it snows or rains, it's even worse. That mint tire scores a 5.4 in snow, it has bare minimum snow performance and you probably wouldn't survive a winter with those in Michigan.
Topher, this is a car I am still considering. What made you go with the Si over this? Was it a price issue (I believe this is another 20% above the Si), long term reliability, gearing, fun to drive, etc?

I'd probably guess it's that the Honda driving engagement is just really rally good.
@@pieswimmer1 If the SI ever gets an engine that is close to 240 or 250 HP then they have a stone cold winner. Get the type R close to 350 HP and they'll have a lineup that no one can touch
My friend used to own the last gen civic, he said he would prefer the GTI (or GLI, which is basically the same car) because it's miles better than his car.
@@scotts6702 I don't know how good the new honda infotainment is, but this is a last gen GLI (because there isn't a new GLI yet), that doesn't share the infotainment with the mk8 GTI. And as a GTI owner, I would say that is a very solid system especially when it has the 10 inch screen.
I would love to own this car but no dealer in South Florida has one with a manual gearbox. This fake supply shortage is getting tiring.

Definitely sounds amazing!! But my inky thing is these volx turbo eat so much of the gas u would think this engine was bigger or it was twin turbo the way it eats thru gas but hey who cares when ur enjoying it daily !

When the jetta has a nicer interior and infotainment than the mk8 golf lmfao still has an ugly steering wheel tho... they could have slapped this interior into thr mk8 with an edge to edge display and a better wheel and it would have been just fine

You don't need to downshift to 1st gear when making a corner like you did early in the video. You only need to downshift to 2nd gear, and it will allow you to get going again just as good! I can say that because i have been driving manual cars for over 20 years.
