I think the GLI is one of today’s hidden gems today with all the standard content it comes with including dynamic dampers, enough power for most to feel sporty with, a manual offering, and even accepts regular grade gas for those times you need to pinch pennies or fuel costs randomly skyrocket (aside from our already inflated gas prices now). I only hate that VW has been producing hard plastic econobox interiors the past handful of years (including cost cutting in their Audi products too), but I guess for the price, you really can’t expect more from the GLI…Personally I’d trade some of the electronic gizmos for that premium economy interior of old VWs any day, but I’m likely the minority.

I think the GLI is just a worse version of the GTI. 30k for the base GTI is very good value. The base GTI is one of the best cars on the market, the upper trims aren't worth it though and ruin the value for the money. I would much rather have a hatchback than a FWD sedan,

Surprised to hear someone say the shifter feels similar to the GLI/GTI. Radically different transmission family and internal shift mechanism.
This 6 speed is the MQ250 family that dates back to the late '80s as a 5 speed. Family code name 02S for this 6 speed. Just has extended input and pinion shafts to accommodate the extra gear and revised bolt-on rear case where it used to be just a pan that covered where 5th gear goes.
Technically, this is a weaker transmission than the MQ350 (02Q for Mk5 and newer cars) 6 speeds that are a lot more common. The 02Q has two pinion shafts, thus two different final drives. Gears 1-4 on pinion #1. 5-6 and reverse are on the other shaft with a taller final drive ratio. The MQ350 is definitely a heavier, bulkier gearbox and the shifting always feels different than MQ250 family boxes.
When all new and perfectly aligned, either feels pretty good. There's a slight increase in resistance getting into reverse of the MQ250 boxes, and can have a satisfying "snap" sound as it engages. It's a sliding reverse gear on the reverse idler shaft with an over-center spring to keep it either all the way down, or all the way engaged--no in-between. Where the MQ350 has a normal selector collar and selector arm that feels quite a lot different.
I actually rather like the smaller 02S gearboxes a lot. Europe has been using them in a number of different cars since 2005, 2019 was the first time we got them in the U.S.. Very tall gearing on this specific example, which definitely helps the fuel economy.
I rebuild older, much higher mileage and abused examples of these gearboxes. I know them well. I hybridized one of these newer 02S 6 speeds with a Mk4 02J bellhousing to use in an older car (those older cars need a vehicle speed sensor, VW did away with that sensor in Mk5 and newer generations, opting instead to have the ABS module generate a vehicle speed signal and put it on the powertrain CAN bus for all the modules that need that info to pick it up as opposed to daisy-chain wiring that signal individually to all the modules that need it).
I'm getting weirdly specific here, but these gearboxes are absolutely my wheel house. hah
I like them! Been hearing of some not so great issues with the early examples of the 1.5T from friends still in the trenches at VW dealers. I myself might opt for a slightly older 1.4T instead, they seem to be a little more robust, so long as you loctite the bolts holding the cam adjusters together...
