  • Update: Alena Kostoronaia and Young You have now successfully landed their triple axels in international competition!
    ------------------------------------------
*Please note that this is not a complete list, it's just all the footage I was able to find, and obviously I didn't include every 3A ever done by these ladies. For example, many more Japanese ladies have trained the 3A and even landed it in domestic competition, including Yuhana Yokoi, Hana Yoshida, and Mana Kawabe.
**There are probably many more attempts done in national competitions, it's just much harder to find that information.
***Also, some of the ladies in the "practice" section have attempted 3As in competition at some point, but I couldn't find footage of it. Gulyakova tried a 3A at the 2019 Dragon Trophy but it was underrotated. You Young has also tried it in some domestic Korean competitions.
****Lastly, Dmitrieva's 3A was technically done in a competition, in the "elements" portion of a Russian domestic comp.

Midori had this over Tonya in almost every jump. Midori was always in perfect position in the air. Tonya starts to tilt on her way down on every triple but it didn’t affect the others. I think the extremely height, full rotation and "vibrance" are keys to make a 3A "pleasant to watch". I think both Midori and Tonya had that height and vibrancy. But Midori's leg position and Tonya's WILD axis made them look like there was something wrong.

  • @lsrasr158
    @lsrasr158 Před 4 lety +2114

Which one is my favorite. That's easy. Midori hands down. No one to this day (June 29 19) has performed a better triple axel. Her triple axel at the 1990 worlds LP in Halifax was so incredible that the UK and Canadian commentators said it was probably the best triple axel in the competiton including the men. Her triple axel at Albertville in 92 at the 3 minute 10 second mark of a 4 minute LP was so unbelievable that the olympic channel honored it as an impossible moment at the olympic games. Midori is the greatest technical skater ever and the queen of the triple axel. If she was in her prime today, she would be landing quads.

@@schlagsahne394 I saw a japanese video a while ago with english subtitles where Midori was being interviewed and talking about her 1988 to 1992 years. I think she said she had attempted triple axels and perhaps quads at 14 or 15 but had fractured her ankle. Her coach, Machiko Yamada who Midori lived with, then forbid Midori attempting them. She then said that when she only finished 5th in Calgary with all the triples she did vs. what Katarina did in winning the gold, she decided she had to introduce the triple axel into her skating to win on the international stage. It is amazing how quickly she did it. She barely missed landing a clean 3A at the 1988 skate america, she then landed the 3A at a home town event before landing it internationally at the 1988 NHK.

Good effort from all these skaters but Midori Ito truly is the best jumper in the history of ladies’ figure skating. Although some people might think the other skaters included in this clip have so-called “cleaner” position in the air, I would beg to differ. Most of the other skaters (sole exception being Tanya Harding) learned to execute this jump by relying on really tight turns to complete the 3.5 rotation, as opposed to powerful take off. Consequently, most of them lack height and distance. Midori’s triple axel has the most height and distance because of her athleticism and how she takes off. Tanya arguably managed to get the same height, but she couldn’t quite match the distance because Tanya’s technique somehow would cause her to lean out out of the axis and backwards,, which forced her to have to re-center her body and subsequently lose the momentum to create good distance. Midori on the other hand is good at keeping her body position either centered or at least leaning forward (instead of backwards), Ultimately Midori pole vaults her triple axel, while the rest hopped and twisted their bodies into a pencil.

Midori was such a power house jumper. It's amazing that she managed to get a triple axel fully rotated even though she tends to do a leg wrap on her jumps which makes your rotation speed slower.

If there are still doubts out there as to which female skater performed the triple axel the best, please simply look at both the height and the distance of Ito’s at the 1988 NHK. Harding’s axel came close to size, but it still didn’t cover as much ice as Ito’s. It is more powerful than any of the quads performed these days.

Midori Ito's triple axels are by far the best. High, long, fast and beautifully straight in the air. Technically, Midori's free programmes were not surpassed for nearly 30 years until 2018 with Sacha Trusova doing quads.

Midori's Axel is just a marvel to watch. Just the sheer height drops my jaw every time. Personally, Mao's air position is a little bit neater to me, but I would pick Midori's without a doubt as my all time favorite. Neater and higher than most of the men's!

In the 1992 Olympic Games, I couldn’t understand why Kristi Yamaguchi won the gold medal, instead of Midori Ito who nailed the triple axel in the long program. I didn’t remember that Midori fell on her first attempt at the triple axel, but nailed the second triple axel. So had Midori nailed both triple axels in the long program, then she would of been the Olympic ladies figure skating champion. That sucks! 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • @Milordvega

Midori Ito for the height and for being the first, Tonya Harding for the power and also the height, and for her sheer joy when she first landed it.
All the others are impressive, but I'm more into the height of the jump and the distance, than the sheer speed of the spins or even effortlessness. Just seeing in their faces the sheer effort to make the jump makes Midori andTonya's triple axels more exciting to me to watch.

Actually, I'm impressed with Ayaka Hosoda's 3A and love her jumps! She landed 3A first time in 2017 and finally landed at Japanese national competition at the age of 23 in 2018. She showed that you can jump 3A no matter how old she is or no matter how she is known. Not many people knows about her, but I hope she can jump 3A at international competitions as a late bloomer!
