Technical information about these HD videos.
In 1994, Japanese TV station NHK made an HDTV shoot of Lillehammer Olympic games, mainly Figure Skating, Short Track, Speed Skate, Opening and Closing ceremony, Ski Jump and Nordic. In Hamar Ice Rink, they used 4 Sony HDC-500 - 2 million pixels 3-CCD HDTV Camera, and two Sony HDD-1000 - 1 inch open-reel digital video recorder. They experimentally broadcasted 109.5 hours in the MUSE analog HD format via satellite during the Olympic period.
    Unfortunately, I couldn't watch that.
In 1997, NHK broadcasted the digest of the Lillehammer Olympics for total 32 hours in the MUSE analog HD format. I recorded figure skating events with W-VHS baseband analog HD video recorder.
In 2001, 2002 and 2003, NHK broadcasted another digest of the Lillehammer Olympics for total 21.5 hours on Digital HDTV satellite broadcasting with 1080i MPEG2 video format. This is little bit clear video quality than MUSE format. But fewer athletes were on aired. I have D-VHS tapes of the figure skating events.
These W-VHS and D-VHS tapes have been already shared on CZcams. Please visit my channel, or search "Lillehammer mintaka" from CZcams search window.
For the videos from W-VHS tapes, I use Hauppauge's HD PVR for video capture. For D-VHS tapes, digital TS data are transmitted from D-VHS tape deck to PC via IEEE1394 connection. Captured digital data are processed by ffmpeg software. In which, "yadif" filter is used for de-interlacing to 30p Progressive ("bwdif" for 60p). "hqdn3d" filter to de-noise, and at last, videos are H.264 encoded for uploading. In some videos with [4K60P] notation, "sinc" filter is used for up-scaling.

She was an exceptional skater and even more exceptional when you know she achieved greatness with only a fraction of the resources her competitors had. It's easy to be great when your parents love you and pay the bills and your sponsors pay for you to have the best equipment and trainers. Tonya had nobody but herself.

The gold medalist that year, Oksana Baiul, had anything but a privileged upbringing with resources to help her. And had also been through quite a bit of personal trauma, as well as a bad injury right before her Olympic skate. She still did it with excellence and grace, at a very young age.

  • @MissLilRedRooster
    @MissLilRedRooster Před 2 lety +9051

People always mocked her for things like her skates breaking down, or her dresses falling apart, but she didn't come from a privileged world where she always had the best equipment, sponsors, or support, and of course, when you're poor, what you have will break down and wear our and let you down when you least need it to.
The skating world has always been such a wealthy, privileged game, and that was always so obvious when Tonya was competing and commentary kept blaming her for her equipment failing or her own fragile mental health, like she somehow chose to have to battle with her upbringing and socioeconomic status.

I remember watching this in 1994. I felt so bad for her then. The press was cruel. She was always an amazing skater! I was always rooting for her. The power that she had! I thought it was so cool that she could do the triple when no other woman really even attempted it. It was quite inspiring.
I just watched I, Tonya tonight. I didn't know about her upbringing or very much about her marriage. How heartbreaking. I do think she got a raw deal in general. If it's any consolation, long after other athletes are forgotten, she will be remembered.
    God bless you Tonya Harding.

She was beautiful in a mature and strong way instead of a frail and gentle way which is a lot more commendable because it shows that she isn’t favoured for being light and pretty but powerful and pretty and back then, her beauty wasn’t as commendable because the expectation wasn’t to look strong like she does but rather light and graceful, showing how purely brilliant her skating ability is

Even after watching “I, Tonya” for the -nth time in a row last night, I knew Harding still wasn’t a good person despite her horrible upbringing and this little know fact about her life made me lose even more respect for her. Back then they didn't have the term "hater". Many people foolishly sympathized with Nancy Kerrigan so for some years after the incident Tonya was villanized while Nancy was idolized. Slowly as the years passed, it was revealed that Nancy isn't a nice person and fame only made her arrogant. Tonya picked up the pieces and made a new life for herself. Tonya even went on some talk show and apologized to Nancy for her ex husbands action. I heard he apologized too. Nancy refused to accept her apology on the talk show. So Tonya shook it off and moved on. Eventually she remarried, had kids and now runs her own buisness and his clearly happy despite everything she lost. She used to appear on World's Dumbest and she always looked like she was having fun. Nancy is still bitter and looks down on everyone who comes near her.

Then finally at 2:12 you can see the moment she gives up and lets all her sadness and frustration out. she was poor, not petite like everybody else, a tom boy, a victim on emotional and physical abuse who fell for a man because she thought he loved her, as well as thinking him hitting her was normal and okay bc her mom hit her and she loved her.

The assault on Nancy Kerrigan was masterminded by Tonya's moronic ex-husband and his even more moronic and delusional pal and carried out by some pals of them. Tonya Harding only pleaded guilty for "hindering the investigations"(= not telling the authorities immediately after she learned - after the assault! - that her ex-husband etc. were behind it because she was afraid of him (due to his abusiveness) and at the same time emotionally dependent of him).
The "hard" evidence against Tonya Harding is actually quite shaky. If someone is interested I could give a link to some good Analysis About it. And Nancy Kerrigans leg didn't got broken. She suffered "only" bruising. Don't get me wrong: The assault was wrong and should never have happened, but Tonya is NOT as guilty as many People want her to be and it's important to get the Facts Right, IMHO.

This just popped up in my feed. Watching this again after seeing it the first time was heart breaking. I was just two years older than her at the time. Tonya was a powerhouse. She could jump better than most girls. Hell she jumped better than most of the boys. She wasn’t afraid to go for the triples with gusto. They blasted her for not being dainty enough, they chided her for her arm positions not being elegant enough, they shunned her for not being the perfect ballerina on skates, and they made fun of her outfits which were sometimes hand sewn because unlike another famous skater of her time, she didn’t have a designer make her outfits for a hefty price tag. I enjoyed watching her skate because I never knew what she was going to do and thus she removed the predictability out of ice skating.
