That was the most graceful ice skate performer I have ever seen. So delicate, beautifully aligned. A beautiful swan.
That's why she won gold 😁🤩❤️ 🤘
Rhonda Nelson watch Yuzuru Hungary of Japan !, so beautiful too!
Yu Na Kim too.
As a ballet dancer, I’m so impressed that she showed so amazingly the exact key points of ’Dying Swan’! Amazing turns, spirals! I mean how could she perform this variation on the ice! Her turnout is absolutely amazing🩰👍!!
Right? She must have had ballet training as supplemental training for skating.
@@nachtegaelw5389 all ice skaters take ballet. most of them in Eurasia do at least. gymnasts too.
@@user-tb2wc8rc2e that makes sense, I know a lot of skaters take some ballet as cross training. At least in my ballet classes growing up there were a few students taking it as cross training for Irish dancing or figure skating.
It’s just that Baiul has such obviously good ballet technique and her use of epaulement is exquisite (in all the videos I’ve seen of her). Her ballet training is just more obvious to me than with other skaters.
As far as I know, she originally wanted to train as a ballet dancer, but they did not accept her because allegedly she was too fat... I consider that laughable, but the Russian ballet schools have very strict criteria about the body characteristics of the girls they train, not just in terms of weight.
@@christianealshut1123 they so do have such strict body type standards! Most classical ballet companies do, but I heard of one company (years ago) firing a dancer because her weight exceeded 115 lbs 🤦♀️
Her mother loved ballet, it's a hommage to her
Hubert Drzymala Oskana initially wanted to become a ballerina, but she was told that she wasn't "thin enough", so she was encouraged to pursue figure skating instead. She still trained in ballet afterwards, though, as a supplement to her skating. She's an excellent figure skater for sure, it I think that she would've made a fine ballerina as well. Those who told her she wasn't thin enough for ballet were crazy.
Lynn Cai Professional ballet companies are very particular about the body type they want. Even if you have the best technique, your body might not be the one they want. The ballet world is very harsh.
@@lynncai587 What Jonathan M. said! That is difference between the art and sports worlds. One is totally subjective, whilst the other although subjective in areas is ultimately objective.
@@jonathanm.9801 true, and yet... look at muscular and curvy Misty Copeland, superstar prima ballerina breaking all stereotypes. She’s stunning and as graceful as can be.
😭😭😭
I wasn’t a big fan of Oksana until she showed poise, grace and class at the medal ceremony. Nancy’s icy glare as Oksana received her gold medal just stunned me. Then Oksana actually and literally danced on the ice for her exhibition skate to The Swan. I was in tears. She WAS THE Swan. Thanks for that unforgettable performance, Oksana. ♥️
Same here. How could anyone Won't feel amazed by Her skating.
I love Nancy but after the Harding/Gilooly incident and all the ensuing coverage I feel like she had a somewhat entitled attitude. I was disappointed with her by the end of the contest... she was definetly being a little petty.
Good for Oksana, that girl deserved to take the gold medal.
I get why Nancy wasn't happy, but being a graceful "loser" (even though second in the entire world is still hella impressive) is an important skill for athletes. And OMG, when you know you're on camera, conduct yourself accordingly. That snipe that "she's just gonna cry it off anyway" is an EXTREMELY bad look & she should have known better
Usually I feel like figure skaters can never embody the true grace of a ballerina simply because it's just a different art however, coming from professional training as a ballet dancer and now ice skating, this gave me goose bumps. Absolutely blown away! She truly embodied the role and it was gorgeous.
Harriet Royle have you ever seen Alina Zagitova's gold medal performance or her short program in PyeongChang Olympics? They're really beatiful, i mean artistry not as god as this one but this two performances give me goosebumps too, it's just a recomendation, and it's okay if you don't like them, everyone have their opinions
Purple Gum you should check out Alena Kostornaia! She is bringing artistry back to this beautiful sport!
Same with women's gymnastics.
Harriet Royle Agree Harriet - rare is it when an ice skater can really incorporate excellent ballet as she does
Purple Gum yup and that is why the sport is losing audience
She was everything that Nancy was not. Greatness and elegance combined into one.
Céhad Dunebuggy And she was humble and gracious.
In the first minute of this program she showed exactly why artistry is important in figure skating.
Nancy was whiny bitch , sucky baby and still is .
Céhad Dunebuggy Thank you for pointing this out. Also, she never did the tougher jumps as the other female skaters did.
Nancy wore beautiful designer costumes and always looked polished, but was extremely limited as far as actual talent. In almost all Nancy's programs she has same choreography in most all of them , and no flexibility whatsoever. She was just a much different skater. Oksana was great here
I remember this like it was yesterday. Such emotions can’t be faked like Kerrigan tried to do. This girl skated for her mom like her life depended on it. Only to find out it did. She had lost her mom early in life and she needed this to earn a living on her own. BEAUTIFUL
Plus at the time she was skating this, she was in great pain - see the bandage on her leg? She had collided with another skater during a warmup or training session.
Harriet P she went through a lot after she became famous she struggled a lot in her career due to her emotional problems. It was sad to see but I’m glad she was able to win the medal she certainly deserved it
@@46foryounger I think her problems got even bigger after winning the medal, which I very much regret. I don't know what she's doing now, but I hope she's healthy and happy.
I remember it too. I loved watching skating with my mom. She was my favorite women’s skater. Her artistry was second to none.
@@RioMuc yes they did, which is heartbreaking. She was arrested for crashing a car due to drunk driving. She had a lot of problems with alcohol because she started drinking on a trip to a competition and everyone else was drinking because they were adults whereas she was just a teen. I think she's a few years sober now though and I'm really proud of her!
No one could compete with this beautiful young lady!! Truly the best at these Olympics Games in 1994!!
My mother absolutely adored this woman. I remember watching this with her. I feel like figure skating and ice dancing were a bigger deal back then.
I watch this as Ukraine is being invaded, cry and think of how beautiful the people and the country is. May this terrible war end quickly. Thank you Oksana for such beauty!
今でも彼女は私の最高のスケーターです。戦争が直ぐに終ります様に祈ります。そして彼女が幸せでありますよう祈ります。
Ukraine is not to be trusted by its neighbour Russia. In 1941 when the nazis attacked the USSR - Ukraine wanted to join the german armies. Hitler wanted nothing to do with them. Now Ukraine wants to join NATO, at Russia's doorstep. No wonder Russia reacted. But this is going too far now, time to negotiate. I don't want a nuclear war because of Ukraine.
Thank you Oksana, may god stop the war!
its a deepstate stronghold Putin is rescuing trafficked kids and blowing up biolabs there !you people wont look at the truth because you are too distracted and busy with your heads buried in the sand watching the fake media and their LIES The Biden admin are so damned corrupt got their evil dirty hands on all of it
@@mie9774 ❤🇯🇵 arigatoooooo gozaimasu!💛💙
Wow. If you've ever seen the great ballerinas perform this, you know how amazing Oksana's performance really is.
Quads, quads, quads blah blah blah, however accomplished skaters are these days with their quads I have yet to see a performance like this one - Oksana BECOMES the swan. All eyes are on her. Not a peep in that entire stadium. She is exquisite. Absolutely wonderful
Totally agree.
She skates as if she were Pavlova incarnate. No one before or after has ever skated like this. She is in a class by herself.
She reminds me here of Ulanova.. I am sure she watched her dance it
She is just darling. I remember watching this live. We are almost same age us 2
Whatever happened to Oksana?
Totally agree. I saw her perform this in ‘94 (on TV) and I’ve never forgotten it. I was stunned then and am still to this day. None before or since like her.
Most beautiful performance ever
Oksana could move like no other . Incomparable grace elegance & fluidity
martha anderson the
Agree, My daughter gave me a poster of Oksana she knew I loved her skating so much. We used to watch her my daughter was a toddler, she fid dome skating and won a trophy at 12, she held her foot over her head with her hand, a wonderful moment.
1994 ? wow look’s like it was taken yesterday, great HD for 1994..
Kenneth Jake Liwanan The Japanese have that really clear HD tech. It’s awesome.
It's always shocking to suddenly encounter a Japanese hd video while watching old performances lmao
@@MistressGlowWorm ; These Olympics were in Norway.
@@elizabethpease947 However, Japanese film crews were there recording too.
@@MistressGlowWorm : OK, fine. Oksana wasn’t in the Japanese Winter Olympics, was she?
Her performance was so beautiful. I could not forget her skating. Thank you.
Wow, so much control. I’ve never heard of her, but her artistry is impeccable. Better than most of what I see today.
M. H. She was a absolute joy to watch- most of us who saw this performed were def mesmerized and realized immediately she was the real deal- grace and beauty.❤️
"Ive never heard of her" LMFAOOO
You must be young if you don't ))) and she is Ukrainian. Who knows where is it? Do you this country? I'm from Ukraine too! 🤩
Top much enphasis on jumps nowadays.
If you like a sport, It is great to watch previous champions and best performers. You will be surprised as How much "novelty" of today was already being done years ago.
This is a really hard dance to perform regular flooring. Could only imagine what it must be like incorporating the choreography on ice. No wonder she won the gold 🤙
My all time favorite. She´s a complete artist.
NekoPetrovsky I
One of the best programs of all time. Oksanas a true and authentic artist on the ice. She glides and floats. She is the swan.
Качество тв-картинки для 1994 года просто потрясающее.
Японія
Still one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. She looks like she belongs in a music box
I love this performance. Oksana herself was injured, so it adds to the parallels with the 'dying swan' routine (which shouldn't be confused with the white swan of the 'Swan Lake'. This is from 'The carnival of animals', in which a swan appears after getting wounded, sort of like having a last flight before death) I wish she would have stayed longer around skating. She's so graceful, and you can see raw passion behind her performances, which I prefer above the 'mechanical doll' that does everything perfectly and lacks emotion.

Lu! This is from Swan Lake...
Lu! This is from Swan Lake...
rzcification this is not from swan lake. It’s from saint saens carnival of the animals.
I don't think I realized this is from Swan Lake, thanks!
めっちゃきれいだなあ..てか画質良すぎでビビる
After all these years, this still reigns supreme as my fave performance of all time. Her arms, lines, the original elements of the dying swam choreography interspersed throughout the routine - amazing. She's the best.
Ви - прекрасна,Оксаночко!
Нехай у вас складається все як найкраще! Українці вас люблять і пам'ятають!!
Wow! She actually BECAME the Swan!
Beautiful....
I loved the little twitch of her head in a few places like the swan. Such a lovely touch
I noticed a similar tic in one of Ulyana Lopatkina's performances of Swan Lake. It's the DVD version. Ulyana owns The "SWAN"
Breathtakingly beautiful and timeless.
It's like watching smoke move. It's like her skates don't touch the ice, she just floats on it.
The beginning was so intricate - breathtaking!
That part was an almost exact recreation of a famous ballet solo to the same music. She really nailed the technique and artistry like a ballerina.
That part was amazing. She didn't even started skating yet got an applause for that movement.
One of my favorite Ice Skaters doing her signature spin while performing so smooth and graceful.
I can watch this a million times over & it never gets old. I'm watching it again now & thinking of what's happening in Ukraine & am so sad to see what's happening in Oksana's home country. Prayers for Ukraine & all Ukrainians 💛💙
Thank you for your compassion and support!❤🤗
Очень красиво... слов нет
This performance still gives me the chills after so many years. It's like watching for the first time all over again!!! What a great talent!
There is something archetypical about this performance. I really don't even care about figure skating, but the beauty, femininity, and grace of this performance is undeniable. It's universally beautiful. Her performance almost defines the word itself.
Will never forget you! Praying for your country.🙏
I shed tears for the first time while watching figure skating during this performance. Beautiful.
The most beautiful performance on ice I've ever seen.
Me too.
@@janglass8219 me three!!
Most beautiful performances I’ve seen
Hard to believe I first saw this 25 years ago. Man time flies
"One Moment Of Perfect Beauty"
How well she imitates the swan. Super beautiful and elegant!
Mein Gott, wie schön das ist!
冒頭で一気に鳥肌が立ちました。
美しい。見事にバレエとフィギュアスケートを融合してますね。
Still one of the most beautiful ice skating exhibitions I've ever seen.
She makes a great swan and it's one of her best roles. Truly amazing.
What I think is lacking in Olympic figure skating today (Yuzuru Hanyu being the exception), is elegance and artistry.. I don't think most fans of figure skating only want to see skaters complete a certain number of rotations and landings cleanly. If a skater tells a story with their performance, if their artistry and interpretation of the music moves people emotionally, if they can combine that with athleticism, that is what makes a skating STAR vs. just an amazing athlete, and (sadly) those don't come along very often.
The 1994 Winter Olympics was a once in a lifetime event because we had legends like Oksana Baiul and Gordeeva and Grinkov who had it all. Oksana Baiul's performances there were breathtaking and elevating , as good art is.
I hope that Yuzuru Hanyu's attempt at performing a quad axel and not sticking the landing at this Olympics, (which cost him a place on the podium to 3 others who skated cleanly but fell short artistically), doesn't deter him from preparing for the next Olympics. We need true artists like Yuzuru in the modern figure skating world.
Oksana is poetry in motion. So much death and sadness in her young life and still radiates happiness.
I haven’t seen this much artistry in skating in long a while. I feel like skating now has become so much more about jumps and technique that the artistry is lost in the sport. So mesmerizing...
That's what happens when you mix two amazing forms of art together. That's the best performance I've ever seen.
Okasana Baiul, what a delicate, sweet and elegant flower she is. She stole the hearts of hundreds of millions all over the world.
To this day, I cry when I watch this orphan girl of 15...so much feeling, so athletic, so exquisitely beautiful.
Does anyone else cry when they see her skating? Or is it just me?
これはもうスケートではなく、バレエだ
いえ、これはスケートです
スケートはスケート
バレエはバレエ
わかりますか?
Stunning artist....her story moved and excited me ❤
I am from the same city. Odessa. We have one of the most beautiful Opera House in the world. We all grew up watching ballet.
Breath-taking. Well done, Oksana!
She casts a spell... what beautiful, exquisite performance! Loved it. I had not seen this one, surely her best.
Her Artistry will live on FOREVER!! SHE WAS TOTALLY MESMERIZING!
She was something else. What a beautiful skater.
A breathtakingly exquisite routine , one that still moves me to tears almost 30 years after it was first performed. ❤❤
Beautiful
Perfect example of why she will always be my favorite.
The best, most beautiful performance of these whole games!!!! She is the queen!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Saw this performance live also the pressure was off n she skated for her mother stunning!! Also all her skating at this Olympics was a tender thank you to a compassionate coach who took her in to her home n not only coached Oksanas talent to winning the gold but gave love n stability to a little girl who had lost everything God Bless You Madame Pechenko (please excuse spelling) 👏🏻⛸️
Beautiful ❤️
Beautiful port de bras especially incredible for that time
Absolutely the most beautiful thing I have ever seen on ice.
this was for her mama
Exquisite. She is the standard of grace and artistry in women’s figure skating.
I remember this performance - so perfect! She did a marvelous job combining ballet with ice skating to capture the mood and moves of the music.
Isso é arte... que interpretação, leveza, elegância
I was about 10 when this was going on. I heard of her and knew she was a champion but am just now seeing how good she was. I've never seen showmanship on an ice skater like this.
😭 Amazing😍😍😍😍😍
She lands so soft and smoothly... mesmerizing, breathtaking, wow!
Still one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in this world and we are in the 2022.
Elegant Beautiful performance. She was Amazing.
I'm overwhelmed. Beautiful
Her childlike imagination of swan.
Exquisite performance on the ice.
Ballet on ice. Absolutely a true ice princess 👸🏻😍
On the ice she is the definition of Graceful art.
My God. It was absolutely mesmerizing.
I know Oksana had some tech problems (especially her landings) but the level of artistry it's incredible. Delicate, soft and yet passionate. So in character.
Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!
I just saw the winner of the 2018 women's figure skating....amazing skater! But this here....make me cry...it is SO TOUCHING!!!
Wunderbar!!!!
Восхитительно! 👏👏👏
So incredibly beautifully talented she was.
OMG, Pavlova on ice. Breathtaking. Thank you.
I would love to hear the translation here. I still am moved to tears each time I watch this performance. It was not for competition or for money it was simply to please the audience. Classic Oksana. So beautiful.
I also started crying. Have seen so many swans (including Russian ballet) at Parthenon. Oksana nailed it.
For the introduction, the commentator states, "The gold-medal winner for single ladies. She overcame an injury to her leg." During the performance, the commentator just states what elements she's performing. After the performance, he states, "A swan has appeared on the lake. It was like watching a ballet performance. She lets us forget that this is on ice. Splendid. Just 16 and she's on top of the world. Not only is her technique amazing, but her expression is magnificent." The other commentator replies, "I've never seen a female figure skater who's trained ballet this much and incorporate it with the technique of figure skating."
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. So graceful. So wonderful.
I love her, each time I see her performance I cry.
Very graceful. Impressive
Skaters were so artistic back then .skaters today may be more skilled like theyr doing quads but no skaters have artistic side nowadays. :(
To this day... June 22, 2021... this is the loveliest... most graceful... most beautiful performance I have EVER seen on ice.
🙏❤🇺🇲✌
she is a legend!! thats the real art on ice
Beautiful and lovely! How I miss this era-figure skating was so divine in the 90s!
So good she allows the viewer to forget how strenuous it all is . Artistry on skates.
She is incredible!!!!! It's amazing ad adorable to see Oksana giving us this beautiful show with a lot class.
