    thanks for the info man. been working out regularly for years and this injury has mentally gotten to me a little bit, not being able to workout like i do. many people dont understand but i crave my workouts man. i look forward to them throughout the week. i'm glad to see im not the only one not holding back when it comes to working out post surgery. hope all is well!

    Hey, thx motivation. Just got my MRI result of Distal bicep rupture. Bummed.but actually relieved there is now light at the end of tbe tunnel in regards to being able to workout both arms equally again after surgery and rehab. Initially doc said I am just getting older and need to make a choice to back off or quit lifting if I want any quality of life....that was an ugly, terrible day for me....three weeks later find out its ruptured and repairable and I will be lifting and equaled out in the future. Which is a very big relief to me. I am 58 and not ready to lie down and quit....even with the pain...but to think I could be pain free (to a significant degree) and continue staying strong physically and mentally. Thx for sharing your recovery, it helps alot...take care sir...happy life to you

    So glad i came across your channel tonight. I'm 7 days post surgery and still in a cast, which comes off in 5 days - i'm in Australia and the ambient temp has been over 36deg C every day since surgery. needless to say the sweat under my cast is ridiculous. i'll be watching your video series to get a realistic idea of what to expect on my rehab journey. right now, my biggest challenge is keeping my mind in check as the injury has really impacted me physically and mentally.
    just wanted to say, thanks for posting your journey.

    Did you ever take bpc 157 for your recovery? I have been taking it for about 15 days and my physio therapist is very impressed with my progress following surgery 18 days ago

    I had a full distal bicep tendon rupture on my left arm. I'm currently 1 week post surgery. I want to start weight training my right side and legs. I'm worried I might damage the surgery results. How soon did you start training after your surgery?

    Great video.
    I have only done walking/ and very light weights with my legs and good side of the body.
    I think it will certainly help recovery to be active but over straining and going to hard I feel could affect the repair if your not careful.
    Most people seem to be back to some form of regular activity after a couple months and in the grand scheme of things it isn’t a long time as we have the rest of our lives to get back to being on top again.

      Couldn't have said it better myself.
      Use weights that are "light" relative to you!
      We are chasing the body's endocrine response not any strength/size gains.

      @@Dr.JayDMD yep exactly that, I just my tendon to heal right more than anything.
      Do you move your arm freely within your braces limits without aiding with the other arm?

      @@Rawbchu I am starting to take it through its full range of motion by itself as of week 4.
      Prior to that I would only extend and flex it with the aid of my other arm.

    I was in my cast for 2wks and my doctor told me to just move the arm freely. I’m 3 1/2 weeks post surgery and the range of motion is starting to come back after 2 physical therapy sessions. Those sessions were pretty painful lol. I went back to the gym a few days after they took that cast off. Just legs and light upper body for the good side. It’s tough not being able to use the other side.
    How long was your arm in pain after the surgery?

      Happy to hear that your rehab is going well!
      Yes, the range of motion will start to come back very quickly as long as you stay on top of your rehab/physio exercises.
      My arm was never really in "pain". So much so that I never took any of the prescribed pain meds that my Ortho gave me after the surgery.

    Thanks for this. I Just tore mine now and waiting for the surgery which might take a week or two.
    Any advice on what to do in the meantime? Got no pain unless i go lower than 90 degrees

      You are most welcome! I'm glad that you are getting value from my videos :)
      I had to wait 2 weeks for my surgery as well.
      I continued to work out my legs and the non-injured side. I found that running BEFORE the surgery was easier (since you don't have a plaster cast on). Running after the surgery was almost impossible.
      How did you injure your arm??

      @@Dr.JayDMD Cool that's my plan as well, ---just lower body and core.
      It happened in a silly way as I slid on ice while grabbing hold of a rock in a weird angle, basically pulling my bodyweight with the biceps which gave in.
      Frustrating thing is that the MRIs show inconclusive evidence but from the look/feel it seems like a tendon tear. Will do another revision and ultra-sound tomorrow. Worst thing is the ambiguity around the diagnostic. :(

    I did have another question you might be able to answer.
    If anything went wrong at the stage we are at it would be painful?
    I worry it’s just slipping out and we’d have no idea

      It would be highly unlikely that the endo button would slip out of the radius.
      Chances are, that barring another traumatic injury, you’re fine.
      It takes time for the bicep to start firing again (you won’t notice it flex right away) since it’s been isolated for ~6 weeks in our case.
      Once we start actively loading it you’ll start seeing it again.
      But everyone is different, reach out to your orthopaedic surgeon if you have any concerns!

    Thanks. I was told not to workout for 6 months after surgery. I do extremely light workouts at PT. Im 36. I was benching 315 and now I'm worried I'll lose all progress. It's currently been 4 months. I still have chest muscle but lost 16 cm off my bicep. It also was my dominate arm. My arm is sore as hell after light work. Especially my wrist.

      @Garteal I was finally able to shoot a basketball last week with no pian. Too much use of my arm though feels weird. The nerve from my wrist to my elbow sometimes acts up.

      @@Garteal they put a titanium screw in bone to tie the tendon back. I tore my bicep from the elbow area.

    Thanks for sharing. Question. I'm getting ready to have this surgery I lift etc. How many days did you wait to start working out the other side of your body and legs after surgery? did you work out every day those first two weeks after surgery? interested in knowing. thanks- J

      Hey Jason!
      I got home from surgery and took the rest of the day off + waited an additional day to allow the anti-inflammatory and pain meds to leave my body.
      I didn't stop working my Legs. I made adjustments; like using a smith machine for squats or switched to machine work, and kept going.
      Same goes with the non-injured side of my body, I made adjustments and kept working out.
      The limiting factor for my workouts was the fact that I would get sweaty under my plaster cast, and It became really uncomfortable not being able to shower after..
      Once I got switched into the arm brace I started going to the gym more frequently!
      How did the injury happen?? When is your surgery booked?

      @@Dr.JayDMD Thanks for the reply. I'm going in tomorrow to find out when I get surgery. I didn't have a total rupture as the bicep is still attached. it's a high-grade tear but with very little keeping it attached. I'm 46 lift 5-6 days a week. actually, happened doing isolation curls with light weight. my left bicep. felt the pop and the pain in the distal area. Surprised me really. Got MRI shows high grade tear. I've been waiting a little over 4 weeks because of the slow medical process. hoping tomorrow I find out more and they are able to repair it.

      @@Dr.JayDMD I'm now 3 days now post-surgery. off pain meds. however, i have some numbness in my thumb area. did you have numbness in hand or thumb area? how long will it last?

      Jason we had identical situation. I’m 46 and tore mines doing one arm preacher curls on the preacher curl machine. Felt a pop and knew right away I tore it. Mines was a high grade tear but still attached hanging on my a thread.
      I’m 3 1/2 weeks out and the arm is coming back fast but I still feel some pain as it heals.

      @@Nelford76 glad to hear you are making progress. Definitely a sucky way to spend the summer but we are on the mend. I’m now at 2 weeks 3 days post surgery and have had some issues with numbness kind of a burning sensation in the top of the hand from middle finger to around thumb. I hope it goes away which Dr. Said more likely will. It’s Just uncomfortable and feels like it gets aggravated by the light passive stretching. So I’m locked at about 70 degrees to let it rest and heal. Dr. Said I could start light assisted stretching but I don’t know still pretty sore.

    Seems way too conservative. Sounds like you’re getting old school protocols from your providers. It’s been well established now that tendons placed under very mild tension will expedite collagen formation and healing. Go for a run, use the arm for activities of daily living once you’re able. You’re kind of babying it. I’m at 4 weeks and already using 2lb dumbbells, resistance bands and tons of grip strength training. I have full rom and no splint. I don’t understand how you can damage the endobutton. It’s either anchored to the back of the radiaI bone or it’s completely torn free. I run constantly, never stopped lifting hard on my legs and non affected side. I feel great and my arm is slowly returning to its original size. Obviously you don’t want to lift anything heavy at this point but it’s silly to completely stop all use of the arm for 8 weeks. Rest is vital in the beginning but too much rest on a limb and the body will shut it down. You’ll end up in a hole that will take a year to fully recover from IF you even can fully recover.

      You're right, I was getting very old school conservative protocols from my healthcare providers. I actually went against their recommendations and started to workout way sooner than they wanted.
      Sounds like you got a good routine going for you! Wishing you a speedy recovery. I watched your crossfit video. Hopefully you can get back to those leg lifts and wallballs soon enough ;)
      I must have misspoke, you are correct that there would be no way for you to damage the endobutton. Rather what I meant was, damage the tendon attached to the endobutton by introducing to much tension to the bicep.

      There is also the Cheese Wiring potential/Only under 2% of cases but can happen where the tendon re-tears with wire stitch whip suture prior to the 4 months-6 months where the fusion is almost completed ... been reading tons of white papers. My surg is next week/Wed. = )
      How was mood and pain directly after... like the first 24 hours post.

      @@senfing I had very little to no pain the first couple days.
      The block anesthesia wore off sometime the day after surgery and hand and fingers were swollen, but not so much pain.

      Hey! Any science or research regarding jogging/impact forces? Just had my surgery with suture anchors 6 days ago and already went jogging and to the gym. I am a climber, runner and calisthenics enthusiast, cannot stop doing sports... after hearing the story of your doctor @Jay, I am now thinking I may be going too hard... I just used my pain as an indicator, but maybe that is not working...
