Distal Bicep Rupture 2023 | Fast Bicep Tendon Rehab (Surgical route)
I tore mine boxing 3 weeks ago and hoping to get in to surgery next week. Really concerned with nerve damage and I’m overweight so the risks of surgery are higher. What’s weird is my tendon is stuck in the sheath so I feel almost completely normal and can flex my bicep but when I supinate I feel my tendon gets really tight and cause strain in my arm. Not sure what to do. The surgeon said he wasn’t sure I needed surgery but he would do it if I want
How long did you wait after injury to get surgery?
You’re onto this. Great work. Way beyond the medicos advice which basically covers their asses but doesn’t address who we are. Thanks for the confirmation
Loving the video, I’m on day 2 and every video I see on the surgery, everyone is in a cast, I’m not in a cast and have to do a few physio exercises straight away and it fuckin huuuurts haha I wanna know if anyone else went straight into pronation and supination?
I’m in Aus
What about iodine?
I did the surgery, and while the bicep is close to 100%, I’m missing the inner portion of my bicep (towards the bottom of my bicep on the inside). The exterior looks exactly the same, but I’m missing roughly a 1/2” of that inner bicep. I’ve read online this is normal, and may grow back, and it certainly looks better than not doing the surgery.
Im 4 weeks post op, my surgeon never put me in a brace and told me to stop with the sling at 2 weeks. I was told to lift nothing heavier than a cup of coffee for 6 weeks. I have full range of movement and 99% pronation and supination. How long untill you could flex it solid again? My bicep slightly flexes but feels kind of mushy at the same time.
Sharing of info through CZcams is incredible. I’m so grateful for you and many others. Mark Lister has an amazing series on his journey of distal bicep rupture, if you want to have a look. We’re all different and the same. Connected in our journey
I want one!!. I ruptured my bicep off the tendon and my surgeon just wanted me in a sling, dosent feel very secure, I'm nearly three weeks post surgery. Hope you fully recovered!
Bro still thinking about sex 😂
Came here for info pertaining to the title, distal bicep injury, ...don't have time for an andrew huberman running and morning light podcast. 5 minutes in...I have to go back to work now. I'll try to again later. Thanks
3 weeks post op started stationary bike sessions and gym work with 2/3 days of surgery starting running as soon as I got brace had bandage removed after 10 days and put into brace, I wear the brace but don’t really need it but it offers good protection as I can easily forget I have had surgery & I wear it at night so will continue to wear it until wk6 nearly full movement back, haven’t tried fully straightening it backwards as if to stretch it Can lift a drink to & all the small things
Sorry the diesel analogy and your watch had me rollin 😂😂😂. I needed a good laugh cuz i just ruptured my right bicep tendon yesterday doing preachers. Super bummed. Trying to watch so i know what to expect. Thanks for the info
thanks for the info man. been working out regularly for years and this injury has mentally gotten to me a little bit, not being able to workout like i do. many people dont understand but i crave my workouts man. i look forward to them throughout the week. i'm glad to see im not the only one not holding back when it comes to working out post surgery. hope all is well!

Just add collagen supp Vitamins c fish oil and d and k2
Just tear both of my tendon today. Now Im sad I cant musturbate in a few weeks
10 days post op ,hitting gym squatting with no hands 😁💪🏽
I suffered a complete distal biceps tendon tear in 2016. Also opted for the button. I was 40 years old, and when it was explained to me that I would lose up to 50% of my supination strength, non surgery was not an option. I am an avid powerlifter and body builder, and didn't want to give up that. It took me longer than advertised to be completely back to strength, flexibility, and lack of discomfort. About a year, but can report 8 years later I am bigger and stronger that I was at 40.
It sucks sleeping in that thing your elbow is gonna have a hitch in it when arm is fully extended, don’t push it even after a year
How did you tear your biceps tendon?
I ruptured mine last weekend sparring and these stories as well as the others regarding nerve damage with the surgery I've decided not to get it done. I saw 3 different surgeons and they said it was option but I would lose some strength but that the high percentages that doctors throw out are based off the general population that dont work out. The coach at my gym and he said there have been a few fighters that also tore the Distal and recovered 90% without surgery. One year off of going through what you did + the chance of nerve damage ... pass
I just tore mine on Saturday from throwing a left hook during sparring and I'm still on the fence of going the surgery route specifically because of the recover down time. I'm 55 and up until Saturday was an avid kickboxer and training 4 days a week . So far only seen one doctor and he said I could go without and only lose 20% of strength but I never mentioned anything about speed. I'm going to see another one tomorrow then the 3rd one on Thursday before I make my decision.
What did you decide
@@johnholcomb3887 I didn't do it and I'm very happy with my decision. I did 3 weeks of intensive therapy 3 days per week (therapy, ultrasound , red light therapy) + one PRP injection to help heal the trauma faster then week 4 started strengthening with exercise bands. 6 weeks back in the gym training and now I'm 100% as far as what is needed to kick box yet I do feel that my damaged arm is weaker but nothing that prohibits normal daily routine so I if I continue with specific training and occasional physical therapy I'm sure it will just get even better. I could only imagine doing the surgery and still having my arm somewhat immobilized or at best barely functioning. Plus the possibility of nerve damage ... Not worth it at my age, I cherish every day I can still train at a high level and taking a year to recover completely if at all would have been horrible.
I’m 3.5 weeks post button repair of tear in my dominant right arm. I’m a fit 52yr old male and normally do heavy compound exercises in the gym and run. Had surgery 48hrs after injury (I work in theatre as an anaesthetist and surgeon operated on me quickly) IMO the range of motion (ROM) splint is a waste of time - hard to put on and off and very limiting. I think it is way too conservative. The endo button repair is actually very strong and intra-operatinely the surgeon has already fully extended the repaired biceps ie full range if extension - so you could actually fully “range” it without fear of re-rupture. However, it will hurt. Best not to start “ranging” to “feeling of stretch” until 3 weeks (but do this gently several times a day) and then become more aggressive after 6 weeks (when bone has largely formed over the tendon insertion) I used a standard sling strictly for 2 weeks and then largely out of sling now unless at the gym or driving (don’t want a sudden reflexive supination or severe extension) I’m really going well. Exercises I’m doing are: Heavy-ish (120-130kg) barbell squats balancing the barbell on my traps/shoulders with one arm in sling and lesser reps - if anything happens (it hasn’t) just step forward and the barbell an bumper plates simply fall to floor. I put 5kg extra on the side with sling to balance the barbell better. Hack squats on machine Stair climber Lots of jogging Back hyperextensions with arm out of sling and full ROM of both shoulders squeezing my shoulder blades into each other for hard holds while holding the hyperextended position for at least 1-2mins Lateral deltoid raises with a machine with the pad placed proximal to elbow Triceps extensions on a seated machine with affected elbow extending actively and then guided back passively Hand gripper exercises - multiple times while lying in bed and elbow at 90 degrees. Do this until forearm muscles burn. Make sure there is no chance of supination When you do this) I am carrying cups of tea etc with affected arm and will gradually load more over the next few weeks - importantly this loading of biceps is at 90 degrees flexion position so at the most mechanical advantage position for the muscle. Most flexion is normally by brachialis anyway not biceps. I am not actively loading supination though (this is mostly performed by biceps so not advisable yet) ….just gently supinating to point of discomfort without any load and biceps at 90 degrees flexion All coming together really well Expecting to be loading my biceps more - doing dips and push-ups at the 2 - 2.5 months mark onwards. Will isolate load biceps heavily (curls etc) at the 4 month mark I think - not an important exercise Really important to exercise every day as above and keep that metabolic stimulus going strong and synergistic muscles and adjacent joints in full Really think your ROM splint is way too conservative Only role for these is the old fashion heavy suture repairs and also for delayed surgery when tendon grafts etc has been needed because tendon was so retracted. Hope this helps people. PS: It’s common to get neuropraxia (pins, needles, numbness) in lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm distribution. It’s really annoying but is expect recovery over the next couple of months.
This is why I love the world of CZcams. We are all helping one another find a way through. I have an acute distal bicep rupture after an accident on the rings. I’m a PT so realised immediately Drove to ER where I my diagnosis was seconded. I see the surgeon in three days. I’m going to keep seeing my clients if I can and try to follow your positive run with your own surgery. I’m only 18 months past a paragliding accident where I shattered my talas broke my T 9 and dislocated my right shoulder. I was back 8 reps Bulgarian ring dips but did this injury slipping on the ring doing skin the cat. Any pointers beyond what you said here, eg nutrition is most welcome. Thank you indeed!🙏
I just tore the same bicep 3 days ago, waiting for the doctor to call me and see my options, I do want to get back to work, my job can be physical at times. how long till I can get back to work after surgery and rehab? I'm looking to go back in 6 weeks not are if that's possible.. hope the msg reaches you thanks!
They say if it's done right it's a stronger connection than your born with, as long as you let it heal slowly
2019 I've ruptured my left biceps while boxing. After 48h I was cast free. I did light body movement in the pool and I've trained lower body normalny. Yesterday I did my right biceps. Boxing again. After 48 h I will take the case off. All the people I know who were using the cast had mobility problems for months.
How are you feeling. Tore mine 3 weeks ago boxing
Thank you
Really appreciate these videos. One week post-op. Trying to stay positive but it's not easy. Wondering at what week did you feel as though you could return to golf?
Thank you Dr Jay. Iam only 3 weeks post op. Arm and hand are still numb.iam still in a lot of nerve pain. Iam still wondering should I have had the surgery or not. Please god 6 more weeks I will get better. Start physio today. I got depressed last week for two days. Thank god it passed. Let's see how we go. It's good to listen to other people who have had surgery
How’s it’s going with the nerve problems?
Thanks for the video. Very informative. I am three weeks post ops. I am in a lot of pain. Hopefully this will pass in 3 weeks time. I am starting physio on monday. I ll buy one of those braces your wearing
I'm at week 20 right now. Still too nervous to do Deadlifts or Preachers. Also, my Physio trainer says I should not be doing bench press, pec deck or reverse peck deck. This seems odd to me, but I still haven't done them due to his advice. I see my surgeon for a final 6month follow up next month.
I have surgery in 7hrs 😅
I torn my tendon , scared me , but I gt the surgery, but I've lost strength in my arm significantly.
the last time???? dude you doing something wrong in the gym
I had a full distal bicep tendon rupture on my left arm. I'm currently 1 week post surgery. I want to start weight training my right side and legs. I'm worried I might damage the surgery results. How soon did you start training after your surgery?
I had the same Injury a half year ago. I make No Surgery because iam 53. Now, it is perfekt. No Problems in my life. It is now 90% like bevor, so iam Happy without surgery. The risc of Problems with nervs after the surgery is very High. For me, it was too high. Now i have no Problems without my Bizepsmuscle, the Muscle Musculus Brachialis make the work. 😎
Risk of injury to lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm is 30-50% - pins and needles and numbness that usually completely recovers. Is because if retraction if nerve during surgery. Most concerning nerve complication is posterior interosseous nerve injury in around 1-3%. Causes wrist drop for many months and almost always recovers completely. Strongly recommend repair if you are into fitness and strength training. Also if you use hands a lot in trade work like screwdrivers etc - you will lose more than 60% of your supination strength if no surgical repair. It’s an easy course of recovery with button repair.
Hi, I just had this surgery two weeks back... I am still very much pretty early in the process but I had that splint and ace bandage on for two weeks postop.. an now I have numbness in my wrist and thumb/palm.. did you experience any of this?
VERY interesting point you make about the dehydration! Have you come across any medical journals, etc that speak more on this? I recently had a more than 90% tear of my right distal biceps tendon from nothing more than an awkward fall. I'm a very lean and fit 170 lbs and it made no sense to me how this could possibly happen so easily. I don't drink alcohol at all and I wasn't hung over but I had been sweating a ton from working outside in the heat several days in a row and I was definitely very dehydrated. I would love any additional info via medical journals, etc if you know of any. 🙏 🙏
Also, this video you put together is much better than most I've seen on distal biceps tendon injuries. Thanks for posting it! 👍👍
Hi I've jsut torn my long head bicep I train 6 days a week in crossfit and surf how long do u think before I can go back to these sports and should I stop the crossfit ???
I’m 10 weeks post surgery on my non dominant arm. I still have pain in my shoulder and forearm as a result of the reduced mobility of being in a sling for 6 weeks. Most of my rehab has been to get to a full range of motion with supination, pronation and elbow extension. At the 8 week mark I started using resistance bands for biceps curls (among lots of other arm exercises) - all slow and controlled. I still have some pain when I move my arm in a certain way but I have a lot more function than I did even 1 month ago. My goal has been to reduce pain as well as ROM and protect the repair so I don’t risk re rupturing the tendon. In 2 weeks, the evidence suggests the repair should be “fully” healed which means I can progressively load the arm to increase strength. I’ve researched so many protocols and they’re all different so I’ve been doing what I can within the limits of pain as well as the time since surgery. I’m aiming to be back at work by 16 weeks (I have a job requiring heavy labour) which I’m confident will happen based on a journal article I came across which demonstrated >90% of ppl returned to work at an average of 14 weeks. That’s been a reassuring goal to aim for. I wish everyone who’s dealing with this a safe recovery. I’ve found the psychological aspect to be as tough as the physical aspect. One day at a time has helped me manage that.
I am 16 weeks post-op and I could definitely go back to physical activity. I have been back lifting since week 7 post-op and I am still definitely not super close to 90-100% back so make sure to take it easy when you're back at work, if someone offers to lift something up because they know you're rehabbing let them do it. My arm's strength is progressively getting better however I can feel that it's recovering.
I'm about to have my surgery today.
I had a partial distal bicep tendon rupture. Over 50%. Doctor doesnt want yo do surgery. im concerned it because its workers comp and he doesn't want to deal with them...i am a granite guy. I tore it on an 800lb piece...my job entails 1000lb pieces quite often. So im paranoid about non surgical routes and 5he risk of fully rupturing my tendon in the future. Any input?
I am 6 weeks post ruptured distal bicep tendon injury, I have opted to NOT partake in the surgery, you seem to have done much research on the options of both....I guess I'll never know for about a year if I made the right decision. Any way, my orthopedic surgeon said do not start PT for another 2 weeks, so 8 weeks past Injury does this make sense to you?
Distally ruptured my biceps tendon 3 days ago. Consultant at hospital advised against surgery and to go live with it. He said that in America they often perform surgery because of the amount of money involved. My concern is that here in the UK our health service is on its knees and so adding me to a surgery list adds burden to the service. Not sure what to believe tbh. For now, I’m going with non-surgery 🤷♂️
IAM going with no surgery too. And now.... Its totaly OK. 🙏😁 Nö Problems. Totaly normal life
@@LegionBavaria you lost 40% of your strength
socialism sucks. shoulda done the surgery.
@@FriarPop no, Just 15 to 20 %
@@LegionBavaria that's impossible, several docs said 35 to 40% loss, not lifting but twisting
I have a partial tear 2 weeks, still kinda of weak and still healing but will get get MRI on friday to see how much i've torn, the doc said my tendon is still attached to the bone but we don't know by how much. If I can avoid surgery i will. resting and rehabbing and after Friday i guess we would know how bad the tear is. Moving a dresser, heard a pop, i'm 49 years old, what hurts most is when i do sudden moves with my left arm, hurts right in front of the elbow. Also what sucks most for me is that i have a torn labrum on my opposite arm when i injured my left hand. They treated it with a cortisone shot so its okay for now but not being able to use both arms at full strength has me bummed.
So I tore my distal bicep tendon last year and never got a cast or the limiting brace. I was bandaged up for 2 weeks then was told to start stretching it out slowly I recovered pretty fast and have had no issues. I started training pretty soon after I had range of motion I had two buttons placed to hold the tendon My Dr said he’s been doing it this way for a few years and has had no complications in a patient.

Is there any new supplements we should take?
Also I think you've missed one "cissus quadrangularis".
