    great video and update!
    my physio still just wants me working individual muscles still primarily , i am aloud to bicep curl but he very strictly told me to not lockout the arm whilst doing them... a bit like what you was doing on the lat pull down machine. he wouldnt give me the green light to jump rope, let alone deadlift but i don't think i am ready to tackle deadlifts yet anyway.
    i noticed my extension and pronation will be stiff first thing in the morning until i get warm (it is still cold here in the uk) i have also incorporated light pressing movements.
    a bit like you i am starting to forget my arm is actually injured, it's only because it is still weak in comparison that i remember.
    arm is still small but i noticed this week some veins are starting to creep back and i can notice the bicep activating more and more freely when doing things about the house.
    keep pushing man, we are almost there!

      Thanks @Rawbchu!
      We're pretty much at the same phase in recovery. I'm curious how much does your PT have you curling? I'm assuming you're using a cable machine for constant tension? And yes, staying away from the lockout is important, more so than the weight being used!
      Haha, same thing for me first thing in the mornings. But once I get some blood flowing into the area and I get a little warmed up, the ROM starts to become similar to the other side.
      With the help of my PT and RMT, I have started to notice that different parts of my body (shoulders and upper arm) are compensating to reach end range ROM. Ill discuss this more in detail in my next video, but its important to notice and correct these while doing your rehab movements in order to get the most benefit from them!
      Glad your recovery is going well and thanks for the continued support!

    • @Rawbchu
      @Rawbchu Před rokem +2

      @@Dr.JayDMD I have a resident band and a 2kg dumbbell, he doesn’t want more curling more than 5 pounds for another 4 weeks which I’m not to happy with.
      My PT wants me doing them seated resting my forearm in my lap to avoid locking out my arm as I kept accidentally going almost full range of motion whilst I did them standing so this will be safer for me.
      I have started doing some light pressing movements though.
      My arm is starting to regain size now and my bicep has more of a shape.
      How is your bicep comparing to the other?
      I was born very asymmetrical so I never had matching arms (3 finger gap vs 1 finger gap) noticed it when I lost a lot of weight and had the other checked multiple times for undiagnosed rupture but they can’t find anything wrong with it, just that the insert point for the muscle to tendon junction is different.
      They seem to look very similar, the gap is larger than it use to be on that arm but bare in mind my surgery was late and my bicep became very scarred. I’ve read that can cause the scarred bicep to shorter than it use to.
      I plan to make a video at some point regarding my surgery and rehab.

    • @Dr.JayDMD
      @Dr.JayDMD  Před rokem

      That sounds pretty constant with the conventional rehab schedule. Ill discuss in more detail why I decided to go with Dr. Petrizzo's programing (and the drawbacks to it) compared to the conventional in my next video!
      My arm is "starting" to get size back.. but its mostly because now I'm activating my tricep again (which is 2/3's of the arm). The bicep itself is still very soft, no peak, barley holds a flex.. but every day gets better and better.
      You should make a video! There's not enough "real life" rehab scenarios out there.

    Im 4 weeks post op, my surgeon never put me in a brace and told me to stop with the sling at 2 weeks. I was told to lift nothing heavier than a cup of coffee for 6 weeks. I have full range of movement and 99% pronation and supination. How long untill you could flex it solid again? My bicep slightly flexes but feels kind of mushy at the same time.

    🤮. I’m scheduled for surgery 4/20/23 and I’m depressed to say the least. Was supposed to have a powerlifting competition 5/14 but that’s probably not happening. My torn bicep is my overhand grip but I’m too scared to grab a deadlift. I’m not completely torn but very close. Thanks for the video and get well soon.

      When was your injury date? as of right now you're about 3 weeks out from your surgery. Similar time frame to me (I think I was about 2 - 2.5 weeks out from injury).
      Muscle/nerve memory is a thing! so don't feel all that hard work ramping up to your competition is a waste. You'll get them back quick once you start training with that intensity again!

    Great progress! I just hit week 3 post op and got my bandage off which was a shock to see the muscle wastage ha. Also made me feel the arm was a lot more delicate than I was treating it before it came off.
    The physio has had me engaging my tricep and shoulder with some resistance band work which feels great to use the muscles again.
    Did your supination and pronation come back at the same rate as each other? I am almost back to normal supination to the point I have started relaxing into supinated positions without realising for the first time, but my pronation is still pretty far behind and stiff. That seems to be my biggest area to work on as flection/ extension is about 90% back to normal (although semi tight).

    • @Rawbchu
      @Rawbchu Před rokem +2

      my supination came back very quickly, within a week after being left at natural for 6 weeks.
      my pronation took an additional 2 weeks and still isn't perfect yet unless my body is really warm, first thing in the morning my pronation will still be really crap. (10 weeks post op)
      it is cold here in the uk and i put it down to that not really helping matters haha

      @@james-oz1sr I think with pronation it actually forces the tendon to turn over completely so I guess it’s putting it through a greater range of motion? Might be wrong but just what I notice when turning my hand over completely.

      Glad your recovery is going well!

      Hey James!
      Haha I can relate all too well when removing my plaster cast after the 2 week mark.. You don't realize how small the arm has gotten until they remove the bulk of the bandage.
      As far as supination and pronation, @Rawbchu is right. Supination comes back way sooner and its due to the mechanics of the movement.
      During pronation the radius rotates over the ulna and stretches the tendon more than during supination. Due to the intrinsic nature of the surgery our tendons are now shorter than before (account for the frayed part being removed and the additional part being implanted into the bone).
      So its just a movement pattern that we are going to have to re-learn and allow for our tendon to stretch over time. Which is the reason for all the PT stretches and movements they get you to do during rehab.

    Did you ever have any swelling around the surgery site once you starting using the bicep again? I felt good at the 7 week mark and went on a surf trip - arm held up great with no issues apart from one instance where I accidentally loaded it with quite a bit of force. There was a sharp pain on the tendon the second I did it, but then no pain afterwards, however for the next 2-3 days the surgery site was a little swollen and tender but then returned to normal pretty quick. I saw my surgeon when I returned from the trip (as my description of the incident was alarming to him ha) but he said it all felt solid and recovery was going great. So I am just curious if using the bicep again can result in swelling or maybe I gave it a minor tear from the accidental load

    • @Dr.JayDMD
      @Dr.JayDMD  Před rokem +2

      Hey James!
      I'm glad to hear you were able to go on that surf trip!! That's amazing man.
      What most likely happened was that your bicep was just beat up from overuse during the entire surf trip, hence the tenderness and swelling would prob be there even without that "one instance" of high force.
      Sounds like an overuse injury as opposed to a traumatic injury. If you saw your surgeon and he did his diagnostic tests and everything checked out, then I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Did he take any xrays? or did he just do a clinical evaluation?
      My swelling would usually be noticeable around the forearm (Origin of forearm flexors area/Medial epicondyle). I noticed this right around the same time: week 7-8 when I started really loading my bicep again!
      Hope all is well brother, glad you didn't miss your surf trip!

    • @james-oz1sr
      @james-oz1sr Před rokem

      Ah that is reassuring to hear, my swelling was also at the top of the forearm, right where the surgery incision was. I feel like I had some slight swelling leading up to it too from starting to use it again, but just must have been looking out for it when I had an instance of strain. Either way it all went down after 2 days and feels great now.
      The surgeon only did a physical examination as he was happy with that and said even with an MRI it would be hard to tell, but he felt with a solid hook test and bicep examination it should be fine. The Physio I saw afterwards was also along the same mindset.
      Yeah stoked to have made the trip along with my surfing not even being hindered much by the injury (paddling and pop ups were no issues at all). The funny thing was the surf guide of the boat I was on (the surf trip was a 10 day boat trip) had torn both his biceps years ago so he was pretty shocked to see I made the trip and could surf ha.
