What I love about this movie is the villain. And it's something every single modern Hollywood writer should learn about. Your antagonist doesn't always have to take over the world. Or destroy the world. Him or her just being an as*hole for the sake of being an as*hole is fine by itself.

Strangely, when this would air on the local independent TV station (it was either KSTW 11 or KCPQ 13), the announcer would say, "Coming up next: Masters of the Universe 2: The Cyborg". The actual title shown in the movie was still just CYBORG, though. I was completely baffled as to why it was referred to as a MOTU sequel until decades later and reading about it on the internet. While I now understand the movie's connection to MOTU, I still don't really know why the TV announcer was told to say that title, long after the movie stopped being MOTU 2.
I'm not sure if he was referring to the planned Canon Spider-Man movie, but in a post on former Marvel Comics Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter's website he said he read a script for a Spider-Man movie (that obviously never got made) where whoever wrote it didn't know anything about Spider-Man and instead wrote basically a werewolf movie where the guy turned into a spider rather than a wolf.

Though the film is by no means perfect, it's an absolute masterpiece considering what VD had to work with. Pyun's original cut was way worse. I know because they released it on DVD years later under the title of Slinger and I had the misfortune of watching it. As for the flashbacks and the cutaways before the kills, those I think can be chalked up to the same root cause. In Pyun's original story, Fender and his gang were cannibals ( as well as Satanists) dubbed Flesh Pirates and were supposed to have been driven insane by eating people. Likely, when VD cut the film, he removed a lot of the more graphic scenes that Pyun had filmed showing this happening and the flashbacks were put in to pad the runtime.
Also, if you want to see a film that was probably closer to what Pyun intended I would watch his 1993 film Knights with Kathy Long and Kris Kristofferson. It has most of the same plot beats and is really fun to watch, though I think it only got a VHS release.

Always got this and universal soldier mixed up. I guess because I was so young when I saw them both, they just kind of blended together (all to say it took me until about six minutes into the video to realise dolph wasn’t going to show up!)

This is my favorite Van Damme movie, this made me love him as an 80s action star. Still my favorite film by JCVD. It's cheesy, but it's so great, lol.
    I was also the 900th Like :D
