Avalanche Take Game 2 and Head Back to Colorado With the Series Tied Up

- The Colorado Avalanche did pretty much everything the same as Game 1 against the Winnipeg Jets, but added much better goaltending to the equation, and the result was a convincing 5-2 win over the Jets. The series now heads back to Colorado tied up at 1.
The Avs used four 2nd period goals, then lock down defense in the 3rd that prevented any Winnipeg comeback attempt. Couple that with a much needed solid performance from Alexandar Georgiev and the Avs looked in command and in control for the majority of the game.

Depth scoring has been the story. This is what was missing from the Kraken series last season. To win a game without a single goal from MacKinnon or Rantanen is what they needed. Imagine if MacKinnon gets going? Manson's breakaway was comedy gold, man. I absolutely was expecting a save on that one.
Scary thought isn’t it
gotta give geo props. Ive been vocal about not going back to him for starter but tonight he was really good. Hope he can finally find the consistency the avs need from him.
This was a great start in the right direction
How can real fans say all these negative things about their goalie with the most wins in the season after just one bad playoff game? All you Georgiev haters better shut the f... up next time and stay quiet until he has a chance to rehabilitate himself!
@@lj291261 coming from someone who hasn’t had a positive Avs comment since Donskoi left
@@lj291261 lol calm down spaz. Is this another geo burner? First off im not sure if you are blind, or you dont pay attention but geo has had problems for the entire second half of the year with any sort of consistency. If he cant fix it over 41 games or more and first game of playoffs then fans have the right to say whatever they want within reason obviously. He had the most wins becausre he started way more than any other goalie. If you cant stop more than 2/3 shots in the playoffs you are gonna get called on it and if you are to delicate for that it might be right time for you to find a new sport buddy. Maybe golf is more your speed where people silently stand and clap reguardless of what you are wittnessing happen.
@@lj291261 LMAO hes a bad goalie. theres a reason he's sub .900 save percentage. Most teams can't afford to have a goalie like that as a starter cause they don't score 6 goals a game.
Great team effort awesome win. The third period was some of the best playoff style hockey we have seen out of this team. Let’s hope that carries over good game out of the goaltender. Still a little nervous about that situation let’s go boys.
It’s a tilt in the right direction
Took some heat for liking Mansons game game 1 liked him again game 2 even better. Cleaned up his play some in own zone and was an energetic factor moving the puck and scoring .
I actually thought he played well in game one as well outside of the couple mistakes that cost them. Was almost too easy to ignore how well they played in game one with the focus on the mistakes and questionable goaltending. Loved that after the game, Georgiev and Manson were in the presser taking questions together.
Manson was good
Admittedly, I was on the “roast Georgiev” bus after game one. Never been happier to be proven wrong. Kudos to his teammates as well as I have a strong feeling while we all roasted him, they were lifting him up behind the scenes. Hell of a performance by the entire team last night and loved the response to the early Jets push. That’s the team that can win the cup. And honestly, outside of the few breakdowns in game one, they’ve been great so far and in a hostile environment. Now just hold serve at home and put a stranglehold on the series. LFG Avs 💪
I completely agree, and I’m used to being wrong lol
@@shaggyvondoom Accountability and forgiveness are super powers 😉
I've been a Georgie defender all year and got so pissed off I joined the mob after game 1. I'm so glad he came back with the kind of performance we have seen from him many times this season, and I hope he can keep it up. Key to it was the absolutely stellar defense in front of him. They were so much better this game and if they keep that up, they can win every time. It's been my belief that when this team plays to the best of their ability, they can beat anyone in the league. That third period where they just locked it down was awesome to watch.
Unexpected to hear Kiviranta's name a bunch of times - he was all over the place, great performance. I feel like he's been mostly invisible so that was really nice. The depth really stepped up last night. Exactly what they need.
Val's empty netter was an amazing shot - what an angle! - and I'm glad he got it, because he worked his butt off last night.
Props to Georgiev on a really solid performance. Even with the crowd trying to get in his head, he remained stout between the pipes. Speaking of the Winnipeg crowd, they got their karma for the chants/mock cheers. 😅
Back the Denver we go tied up! #GoAvsGo
We would be doing the exact same thing if it was the opposition. Good for Georgiev, but if I was a Peg fan, I’d have been doing the same to a fragile goalie.
@thekidcomn5938 Oh I get it. It's part of the game. Still, karma was delivered. 🍻
It was rather quiet at the end
I read somewhere Georgie had the same sickness Annunen did but decided to play rather than leave the Avs with a third string goalie
Great character win. This was the depth scoring I was hoping to see in the playoffs. Let's hope Georgie can keep it going. Penalties might become an issue if we don't clean it up (except for Jones' phantom penalty).
A real gritty team effort
AVS NATION! Got a friggin sweet combo of relief & happiness for Georgie. Fanfukntastic bounce back! WE ALL WE GOT!!!
We all we got bay bay
Well played georgiev. Even in moments of defensive mishaps he made some key saves. As the series goes on well see how much he fights to keep pos 1. Keep making those saves, hopefully it was just game 1 shenanigans. Playoff georgiev is what we need.
How about mansons hands there. 👍
He’s awakened and evolved lol
Manson breakaway goal was a beuty :) Manson lets go !!!
Manimal time!
I suppose that is one thing that bothers me about georgiev. Because i do think he CAN be good, hes just so inconsistent...and thats what scares me. Like if he shows up the way he did in game 2 for the rest of series then you wont hear me complain. Which makes game 1 that much harder because if a shred of game 2 georgiev was there in game 1 we could have talked about a rough looking 6-4 win instead of a nasty 6-7 loss. But oh well.
Of course he can play well. We've seen him do it. He was just the total opposite of good in the home stretch of the season and game 1
He likes to keep things fresh and exciting lol
Did y'all enjoy how they showed Hellebuyck's "eye exercises" before the game? 😅It's interesting that he had another shaky game, given his caliber. He's known for not being able to perform as well in the playoffs as he does in regular season. Avs have to jump on that and kill his confidence.
Shoutout to Kyle's happy dance at the very beginning. I think all Avs fans are gonna be doing that randomly throughout the day lol
I’m a happy guy lol
Trenin forgot to play D on G1 but made up for it on Parise's goal. Would be nice to clean that up. *I've been impresses at the Avs effort, flipping the switch. They have an energetic bottom six & super skilled top six.
I do like the grit and grind of this team.
Awesome game 2. Hope we can start Anunen next game at home. Go Avs Go
no, Georgiev deserves the net for how well he played. pull him only if he crumbles
Ride the hot hand
@@shaggyvondoom exactlyyy🔥
25:32 totally agree Chris! I thought kivi had a great game! He had a huge block in the 3rd that saved a goal cause georgiev was down and out (not sure what happened there) but overall great bounce back from the whole squad!
He’s been clutch
You gotta think that there will be some trepidation, on Winny's side, any time Bucky attempts to play the puck behind his net and a heavy forecheck can/will take advantage of that😉💪🏻
I saw somewhere that Georgie had the same thing Annunen had but opted to play
The output tonight wasn't enough if this is the blueprint going forward it'll be a short playoff run. Cycling the puck for half the PP looking for an open lane will never work. Make your success don't wait for it to present itself to you.
Open a lane up yourself with movement well timed shots. Greasy is the only goals you'll get in this series. Don't try to out finesse the AVS.
They can adapt
The PP got messed up with Toews being on PP1 and Makar on PP2 since he got hurt on the play. messed up the dynamic
This reminds of the edmonton series 2 years ago. Give up 6+ goals in game 1. Play better defense game 2. Get 3 goals close to each other in the 2nd period... speaking of which.... frankie frankie!!!
I was thinking the same thing
Never realized till this game how fast Morrissey really is, we gotta keep stopping shots from the blue line. We are only tied, still more series to go, but I could see it on the faces of the Jets players at their press conference, they feel they have this series. Lowry especially just has a smirk I hope we remove. Just happy we stayed on the gas. Hope we can string 2 more wins in Denver, that would help.
Cog doing Cog stuff.
The old dog still has it lol
@@shaggyvondoom love his effort … every single play. (Same for #9)
That play was so fun to watch. The hustle from Trenin, the touch from Cogs and follow through from Parise. Hardworking play gets rewarded. Sometimes…
In the first period when the score was 1 - 0 and the shot count was 9 - 1 in favor of the Jets I thought "Well this is better. This is where I've seen this team WIN most of the time this season." Weird, I know ... Cheers!
Catch em in a rope a dope lol
yeah same. I felt Georgievs confidence building each shot he saved
Manson should have had the 1st star. IMO it was his best game as an Avalanche player.
He was really good
Now that the series is tied and it's moving to Denver, everything feels like a reset. I have to go with "Start Over" as my Band-Maid sound check for the game. To be honest, I feel like the Avs outplayed the Jets in both games.
Fantastic pull. It’s a fresh series now
The 3rd period was a carbon copy of game 6 vs Tampa, its the Avs at their peak when it comes to shutting down a game
That’s very astute,
I'm so glad Georgiev bounced back but one game doesn't earn back all the trust going forward. Consistency has been his issue, so only time will tell.
Zach Parise!😂
Yuck 😂
@shaggyvondoom - Have you seen this Jesse dude from the Bar Down Podcast? Thoughts? Lol
Oh I’m quite familiar with BarDown, did a HockeyDB conversation with Luca not too long ago. I have been a fan of their work for years. I’ll let Jesse have his moment since his elite prospects card isn’t trending anymore lol
All the Avs need is DECENT goaltending. He doesn't have to win it for them. He just can't lose it for them. I'm loving what I'm seeing from the depth too. If the top line really gets rolling...look out, NHL.
I don't think they will get through Vegas. Dallas also has a great offense and the fully healthy Vegas are shutting them down no problem. Colorado are lucky they will play them in the second round instead of the third when they would have more time to gel
not sure if mikko is hurt r what but he just seems off timing everyting seems like hes always reaching for the puck and not taking that extra step
Yeahhh I have noticed
Ekholm hit probs still feeling it
Let's put it this way: If Georgiev had Hellebuycks's game on Tuesday night, the Avalanche fans would be baying for Bednar's job and AG would be flying commercial back to Denver. Maybe Bulgaria. CH was asleep on Wood's 5 hole goal and he looked like Edward Scissorhands handling the buck behind the net, which lead to Parise's goal. AND . . . he let Josh Manson - JOSH MANSON - beat him 5 hole on a breakaway.
The Avs are getting about what we expected out their goalie - on average. The Jets are not. The Avs have put 10 goals on CH in 2 games. I'm not worried about him. But the Jets should be.
I’m gonna keep trashing the team because it seems to work 🤷🏻😂 Go Avs!
No sound for me?
Did you hear that ?
@shaggyvondoom came back and now it has sound, so weird 😅
@@marcuscordova5717 it was a test 😂
See Kyle they do just fine if not better without Girard. Jones can do everything Girard can do AND withstand the barrage of hits WPG is dishing out. But I already know Bednar will screw that up by inserting Girard back in.
I'd like to say HEYTOLDYASOHUH but I'm too mature to make a comment like that.
PS: We gonna call Connor 4forabuck, now? Twennyfie cent?
And what about Georgiev? Well, real Avs fans do not destroy him verbally after one bad playoff game! You guys better learn from your mishap! Georgiev was and is the no 1 Avalanche goalie, Kyle! 😛
I don't understand why it's so far out of bounds to critique a guy who clearly hasn't played well. It's fair game to do so. Take a victory lap if u must for today, but he has not been good recently and there is nothing wrong in saying that. It doesn't mean we stop rooting for him or want him to improve, but calling out his play when it's poor or good is necessary.
jets will take 1 of the next 2 no doubt. I can see this going to game 7
May the best team win
One win does not make a goalie
Oh we know
I'm full of comments today lol. ESPN announcer mentioned Bednar saying the whiteout gave him chills and was a really electric atmosphere, and suggested he was "throwing down the gauntlet" for the Denver crowd. What an absurd statement, as if Ball Arena isn't one of the most difficult places to play with a demonstrably rabid fanbase. I'll say this: I was at the Jets 7-0 beatdown, and damn near nobody left after the second period. There were more fans there to the bitter end of that humiliation than there were at the end of the Jets' defeat last night.
Colorado has one of the weaker how crowds in the league actually
You two guys are only "nice weather Avs fans." As history has shown, Hellebyuck in the playoffs IS NOT the same as in the regular season. Georgiev 9 goals, but the guy who was called "best in the NHL" 10 goals!!
Haven't listened yet, but man you guys are chumps for dogging on Georgie so hard over ONE playoff loss. Yes he's not a Vezina caliber goalie for 3.4m and is below average (like his salary) but I hope I hear some major apologies this episode.
Oh how I wish it was only one game. Guy hasn't been playing well for a month and has been up and down all year. The criticism was valid.
1 game G has not looked good for a month + right now last night was the aberration
It's one game. Relax his cristism is warranted. He's gotta step up and make the saves like he did today.
Dude, relax. It’s one game. He hasn’t played well for a few months. No one owes him anything. Actually, he probably owes his teammates an apology for screwing them over in game 1.
….no it was warranted
