I Sold My Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711!!! WHAT?!

- The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 is a grail watch for many. It was a grail watch for me. The 5711 is nearly impossible to get at retail and about two years ago, I got VERY lucky when I got a call from my local AD that he had a blue dial Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 and it was mind if I wanted it. If you've seen my watch collection video, you've heard this whole story--which, if you haven't, I recount here (good on a second listen too!)--but what you hadn't known until today is that I did in, fact, sell my Patek Philippe 5711. Why did sell it? How much did I sell it for? It's a great story. Enjoy!

*important part of the story that wasn't in... he got the call the morning after I bought him his Cartier Tank (40th bday/wedding gift). We went to the store, and I had him try it on to make sure he liked it before I had it engraved. AND THEN..... he didn't even have it yet and he cheated on it.
Men! Haha j/k, thanks for the great extra! - Han
imagine that
🤣
🤣🤣
The real story is in the comments
“ You never really own a Patek... you sell to the next guy for a Massive profit! ” Well played Brian.
LOL. Cheers!
Nice twist to the Patek motto. So funny!
If you can sell it
"you never really own a patek ... it's for your children and next generation " not to make massive profit , i think so actually
I remember you telling in the collection video, how you've told to a dealer "BTW, ... I'm not going to buy it and flip it" 😂👍
I could have and certainly had the opportunity to like the very next day for a very healthy profit. That's not what happened here as you can tell from the video.
@@hespokestyle still it's hilarious 😁
He absolutely did not flip it. That would be selling it within a few weeks of buying it for the money alone and he had different motivations to boot.
@@Nefville Exactly. Thank you.
@@hespokestyle It's absolutely what happened here. You just waited for the best moment to max out on profit! They will never sell you a Patek again!!
Brian , the way you shared this information without hiding anything made me a fan of you.
Awesome!
totally agree. I like that Brian is not about being rich and having huge disposable income, but appreciating quality things in ways that I don't think people with limitless money even understand.
derosa1989 cheers.
Coudn't agree more. This video proofs Brian to be a very cool and down to Earth guy.
Agree 👌 subscribed
So you basically got paid, wearing this watch for a few years.
LOL. That's one way to look at it!
The catch is will people pay $100.000 for used steel watch?
@iRena Dubrovna yes steel for $100,000 is just out of my league. I can get gold pieces with sprinkle of diamonds with higher horological movement swiss made , with better brand ambassador for less price. "Daytona white gold with diamonds" ; "Vacheron Overseas" Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph 40mm Watch ICED w/22ct Genuine Diamonds; "Piaget Polo" Piaget Polo S 42MM Iced out 22.00ct Genuine Diamondsand more.
This video completely sums up why I love this channel. You do not brag, nor do you boast, you inform. More so than that, you inform with a real down-to-Earth tone and that is something a lot of watch channels do not. I’m very happy for you, enjoy the profit and the rewards of your labour, best wishes from the UK!
Wow! Simply amazing. I love this whole story. The fact that you weren’t a huge spender at the AD and got it for retail is amazing in itself. You wore the watch and enjoyed it, so that’s all you can asked for...but to may a huge profit too! Hats off to you sir! I would have done the same.
Many thanks for the comment and support.
Brian- this update brought me joy! Buying and selling for all the right reasons with no remorse whatsoever- such a rarity in the world of a watch enthusiast. Looking forward to your next acquisition!
Me too! Thanks for the comment, Matthew!
This has been a fun story to follow. Glad you got to experience what it's like having a lot of people's version of a grail watch. And in the end, everybody won. Congrats.
Good for you! You're a hero in the watch enthusiast community. You took a leap at the crazy high retail price, enjoyed it, and definitely came out on top at the end with the profit. Congrats on all levels.
I consigned my 5711/1A to an auction house recently then a week later PP announced they are discontinuing this model....can't wait to see what the hammer price is.
5 Months later: Patek is rumoured to be discontinuing the 5711 and dealer to dealer hype price on these is in the $120K range.......insane.
Brian, I don't know that I could have waited as long as you did to sell that watch. As soon as I saw it go past 20K above retail I would have played it safe and sold it. These numbers are just nuts for a SS sports watch.
My first reaction was like the title "what?!" but I would have done the exact same thing. It's fantastic that it was just as worth buying as it was selling...congrats on that deal, Brian!
Thanks so much, Demetrios. Always appreciate the comment.
Jesus Christ. You can't even get those returns in the market. Good job, Brian.
I know it was completely insane.
Of course you can..... Tesla got me more than for less money in a year and it’s available to anybody to purchase and you don’t need to find a buyer.
You made me smile, Brian... This is what my wife expects me to do with my collection one day ;)
You pulled the trigger at the right time, and that time was when you felt like it was time to see it go... great story. Cheers!
Hi, Laurent! Thanks so much for the comment. And hope you are well.
Thanks for the in depth walkthrough of your experience. This is the type of content I’ve subbed for!
So glad to hear it!
Great video! Truly love and appreciate you gave hard numbers. Not done enough to help people through this watch world, so helps a lot of people out. Really Appreciated!
You got it!
great video. Love the honesty and genuineness that is rare on most social media platforms. I am of the opinion that when. you put good into the universe, good comes back 10 fold. Congrats on enjoying it for 2 years and congrats on the profit you derived. Many blessings.
Looking forward to see you updated state of the collection Brian! I can totally understand the "uncomfortable" feeling of wearing too pricy watches(not to mention the risk), I'd even say these crazy prices spoil the pleasure of considering nice brands. In the 70's 80's 90's this problem wasn't there...but that's the new world!!! congrats!
Coming up next month. Stay tuned!
Great video, great approach, you are really a very special individual and I think your channel is really the only one worth while watching in this category. Thanks again and may your wealth increase more and more!
Many thanks for your support. It means a lot.
Well owning a watch and selling it once you want is natural. In this case it happens to be a hot model with a nice profit, good for you! :). Congrats on the sale and looking forward to the next acquisitions and future videos!
Many thanks! We've got a collection update in the works for next month.
@@hespokestyle Looking forward to it!
@@SwissWatchGang Stay tuned!
I appreciate that you buy items for your own personal pleasure and not just to say " hey IV got a 68k watch and a bespoke suit on I'm better than you" which is what I fear too many people do in this day and age. Congrats on the sell. Looking forward to more watch videos in the future!
Really appreciate that, Joey. Updated collection video coming next month.
I just learned the 5711 (Blue dial) was discontinued and are selling at around 100k :(
Congrats Brian! Great decision. Along with the other factors you mentioned, not having the "sentimental connection" with that watch was key and did make the decision easier! I have a vintage Hamilton my father gave me before he passed away and I would never ever sell it for any price. Again, congratulations!
Exactly, Albert. Thanks so much for chiming in.
This is why I follow. Great story and great content. More story’s like this would be great!
I’m so glad you liked this approach!
I don't know but I just feel impressed and inspired by your story all around The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711. I really appreciate your content, Mr. Brian. I am now just almost finishing my postgraduate degree and looking for a job in management consulting. I'm gonna leave my comment here and see how long I can get one, and please keep doing your great job. We are all here to support you no matter what! You're so humble and genuine, I very much hope that I can have a picture with you one day!
That's so kind of you, Duy. I'm happy to deliver to you. I wish you all the best!
Any progress?
You always come off as so sincere and cool. Congratulations on the money and I can't wait until the next watch update.
Thanks so much for the comment and support.
Wow congrats homie, I'm with you that you made the right decision. Also really enjoyed your philosophy on wearing and enjoying what you have.
WOW--so interesting. This feels like the turning point some of us have been predicting for awhile. Congrats--and thanks for sharing Brian.
JIM! I sensed a bubble and the biggest thing was that I did not have a sentimental attachment to the watch.
Sensed wrong over 100k now
What a story! And you presented it so interestingly, even though I'm not really into watches. ;)
By the way, I usually don't like editing where every few seconds, there's a shutterstock picture shown that doesn't fit into the otherwise very high production value of, say, your videos, Brian. But gotta say, the one at 3:07 was so clever. With the prices skyrocketing..!
Thanks!!
Congratulations! Jesse Livermore would be proud of you. I always love it when someone finally understands the concept of 'the greater fool theory' and puts it into practice instead of becoming a 'greater fool' like so many watch collectors today. Bravo!
Cheers. Thanks so much for chiming in!
That’s awesome, thanks for the great story! This shows that passion does leads to success, even if it’s buying a watch
Really happy you enjoyed the story.
I loved the honesty with the amount of money, very rare in a place like CZcams!
What else would you expect here?!
"I feel like if you don't wear your watches, regardless of the price, I think that's the wrong approach"
Cheers, Yoni. Thank you for "getting it"--in many ways.
Appreciate the transparency on the numbers. I too wear all of my watches and don't buy them as investments, but I'd also have let it go for that price!
Thanks for chiming in, Dustin.
I like the honesty around why you decided to sell. Thank you for sharing.
You're very welcome.
I am proud of you for letting the watch go. It was an achievement piece, and you turned a $40k+ profit in 2 years. You got to enjoy and experience the watch and make money from it. That is the dream. Now you are free to buy more watches and experience even more. I have been following your site for a while, as I noticed that so many of your photos were in DC and Baltimore (and I lived in DC). Congrats Brian! Keep up the good work.
I came running as soon as I saw the title! WHAAT?! is the correct response because you seemed so happy whenever you mentioned it on your older videos! Anyway I also came across another video that talked about watches taking on different connotations and people falling out of love with it due to that: that particular person had a Kermit that he stopped wearing because of the increased price.
Whatever was the reason you decided to let the watch go, I'm sure it was the right one as you sound happy to share this story just as much. I would say money aside but those figures are not something one can simply ignore! Must have been such a rush, those few hours selling it lol.
I do think the Datograph feels more like your signature watch than the 5711 by the way :) - Han
Thanks, Han! Yes, ALS definitely has a special resonance with me.
@@hespokestyle I think it's the attention to detail, looking luxurious and on point even if people can't tell straight away, and staying innovative without abandoning traditions that I see the similarities in! - Han
I was not expecting that number LOL Insanity! Congrats on the sale HSS! Hope your next piece is another heavy hitter for us viewers haha. Can't wait to see what's in store for you next!!!
Stay tuned! And thanks!
Very interesting, thanks for the video and the real sale price disclosure. I remember watching the vid of how you bought it, and can't say I'm too surprised that you cashed it in. It's a stupid amount of money for a current model steel watch with a movement that doesn't even hack!
Im at GMC dealership in waiting room. And this video is playing on tv as im typing this. Im like wow He Made it big!! Nice profit. Everybody in waiting room is tuned in to your story lol
Cant wait to get my grey flannel suit from you
Great story and congrats! I am not really interested in the models that require playing the AD game with waiting lists and so on, but this seems like a best case scenario in every way. You're a lucky man!
I WAS really lucky.
I'm a student now, but I'll get back to you in a decade or so after I've bought a watch like this myself. Inspiring video.
I wish you all the best! Thanks so much for the comment and support.
Good on ya Brian! Excellent sale! Congratulations!! What a story!! 👌
Thanks, Christian! Really glad you enjoyed the story.
Hey Brian from Moscow.
First of all congratulations on that watch deal. It's amazing.
For the second i wanna thank you for your style videos. They are very useful.
Good luck.)
Thank you very much. Really appreciate the support.
That’s an amazing turnaround, well done.
Many thanks for the comment.
Good move Brian, and congratulations on the sale. When these time pieces get that out of control, ie people wanting to buy it right off your wrist, from a personal sanity standpoint IMHO it is better to let it go. Now you have piece of mind, not to mention some nice (stylish?) home improvements. 👍⌚💪
Oh, yeah! We love our new deck!
And now imagine you had sold it only last week. It would have been an extra 20-30k USD...
Now +100k
Can’t wait for that updated collection vid
You definitely did the correct move Brian. All 3 reasons quite reasonable and enough to sell it
But even more congrats involving what u said about keeping in bags/wearing and enjoying your watches. Very well said 👏
Thanks for the comment and support.
Well said and congrats
Many thanks.
I still can’t wrap my head around how a steel sports watch commands that much, but congrats on a killer profit!
Many thanks. I know, it's crazy.
Supply and demand.
@@Psykel Totally. But do you think PP is deliberately holding back availability?
He Spoke Style Sort of, maybe? I doubt they pump out watches and limits the supply like Rolex, but they might make a limited amount of watches to sort of hype it. I’m not too knowledgable when it comes to moden watches, as I’m a vintage collector.
@@Psykel Yeah, I don't know enough to speculate either.
Wow hell of a deal you made there! Congratulations, Brian!
Thanks, Joe!
i literally yelled out loud "holy shit" when you said the sale price. Thats awesome.
You did well, great return. There is so much you can do with the difference that is much better than any simple steel sports watch. It has become a (rich) plebs watch over time. Well fitting to a designer tracksuit and solarium tanned skin.
Awesome !! I just let go my lovely girl the ROLEX SUBMARINER “HULK” 116610LV . For 30k roughly 15k over market. I was in downtown philly. Gentlemen walked to me and my wife . Point to my wrist and said how much ? The rest is history. Congratulations on the sell .
Whoa! Crazy! Thanks for the support and comment.
someone paid you 30k for a hulk... they've more $ than sense
@@jordaneverettross could have got the 'Smurf' blue Submariner in white gold!
Thanks for the vid Brian. Great earnings on the watch.
You're very welcome, Ron!
Congrats Brian. I honestly half expected you to reveal a much higher number, but that's a nice profit nonetheless. Great tip on the app as well. I'm going to add my watch and see what happens.
You're welcome!
instantly became a fan of how you told the actual numbers and not just another clickbait (like what most youtubers do)..
When I saw the title, I was like NO! And, at the end of the video, I was like you did an awesome job, Brian.
Congratulations!
Next, AP Royal Oak in gold dial? A guy got a dream, right?
Glad I could take you on a journey!
Really glad you were honest on the pricing. Congrats thats a huge profit!!!!!
Why wouldn’t I be?!
Great timing, Brian!
Thanks, Eric! I can only hope to be so lucky in the future.
Congrats and what an impressive sale!! I would have done the same... although I cannot make myself part with the Hulk and Batman even though I got them discounted and they go for a good amount over retail (far from 5711 crazy of course 😄). If I sell em I can never get them back for the money I got em for!
Thanks so much for chiming in.
Excellent review and journey
thanks of you because all your excellent posts and your video
You're very welcome. Appreciate the support.
Thank you kindly for sharing this amazing crazy story. And yes watches are made to be worn, not to be put in a little box. They are pieces of art but the kind that should be used. The only watch I am hesitant to use is my grandfathers old wrist watch and pocket watch (that I do think belonged to his brother or uncle). Especially the wrist watch that he was wearing every day. But whenever I wear it for me it's very special.
That's what matters most. Thanks for sharing that, Rasmus.
Congtatulations. Always a great video. Appreciate it...take care and stay healthy
Many thanks! Same to you.
Great video.. man what a rollercoaster 😂 think you did the right thing!
You got to enjoy an AMAZING watch and add an interesting story to your sartorial journey! Not to mention a great profit. Really cool!
That's what it's all about!
Great story and thank you for sharing it. I totally get it when you say sometimes you just don't miss a watch. It is simple - because it's just not good enough as the watch it looks like. Nowadays lots of watches (needless to say which ones) are just way above what they should cost.
It is the marketing hype caused it, not the watch itself. Just take the 5711 for example, if it is really a that good watch, why there were not so many people buy it 3-4 years ago when you can walk in a Patek AD and get a decent discount? now all of a sudden everybody is exaggerating what a wonderful watch it is.
It is interesting to see how the Patek 5131 has dropped significant in value (like $40-50k) in 3 years and all these Nautilus increased their value by a similar amount. I say it is a very smart move, because it was way less people buying the 5131 ($150k market value in 2016) but now way more will try to buy the 5711. Patek obviously learned from from a very good teacher on how to hype the steel sports models. You know who I'm talking about.
Amazing Brian! congratulations!
Many thanks!
Nice story and thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris!
Great Video Mr Sacawa, Super Story!
Wow that’s amazing!! Good job mate
Great channel by the way, keep up the great work
Many thanks, Joseph! Means a lot.
I would definitely sell it too, at the end of the day, it is just A watch not a kidney. I remember how excited I was when I bought my first “luxury” watch which was Rolex Sub. The more watch I get, the less excitement I get when I buy another watch. So yeah If I only had 1 watch I’d never sell the nautilus but at the stage of your collection, I would not miss it
Well said, Tung. Appreciate the comment!
Isn't a kidney less expensive? ;)
@@laurentcosson3360 😂😂😂
Congratulations. I think you deserve what you get for the watch. You have lived your passion and cultivated your connoissuership, and you simply haven't realized that...
Cheers.
Respect on the smart financial decision. I appreciate the sentiments on why you thought it was a good idea.
Thanks so much, Pete. Appreciate the comment.
Makes total sense. Respect your thought process and life priorities! I LOVE my favorite watches - and one in particular - but they don’t own me.
Well, which watch is it?!
Ha! My Rolex Sub “Hulk”. I’m an outdoor adventurer and the stunning green is symbolic and special!
Good call. Get that yellow gold AP Royal Oak Jumbo you've been chasing!
Haha. A 4100ba is still on the list.
Really happy for you. Great Job👌😇
thanks so much, Alamin!
This is what I call a Businessman.Well done :D
Amazing video!
Great Brian, well done, congratulations..!
Thanks so much, Dirk!
Well done Brian ! Great story
So glad you enjoyed it, Shaheen!
Nice sell Brian. That's amazing. You are doing better than some stock brokers :-).
LOL.
Great for you; love this story!
Hey Brian, can't wait, please post your Watch update ASAP. Thanks in advance.
Stay tuned!
Well done mate. Love the site as well. Could you do a video on some online stores that you'd recommend? That would help greatly.
What specifically are you looking for?
Smart decision, I think that some of the appeal of collecting watches is moving some around after you enjoyed them so others can too and so you can enjoy some others. Im truly curious what you'll be adding next to your collection and Im motivated to work hard so I can buy your Datograph when you decide to sell it!
Oh, the Dato isn't going anywhere! Thanks for the comment!
Stunned. That’s mind boggling. I would have quickly parted with the watch too.
I wasn't planning on it.
I am glad you haven't received too much hate about this sale so far with most people seeming to be supportive. When I saw the title I was concerned that this comments section would be full of hatred, saying that you screwed over the AD or are just a watch flipper or something but so far the response has been measured.
I think you chose the right time to sell. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a collapse in these high end steel sports watch prices over the next few months since no one knows how the pandemic is going to affect the high end watch market and you are still selling pretty near the top of the watch's value. I'm sure the money is also going to be a nice cushion in case you or your wife have any income interruption because of the pandemic over the next year as well.
Wishing you the best of luck in these trying times.
Many thanks. Appreciate the comment and support. A flip would have been me selling the next day--which I could have. I wore this watch. It got scratched--thanks, dog... I sensed a bubble and acted.
I know you mentioned that buying a 25.000 dollar watch isn't just another day in life of Brian Sacawa, but even buying a 1.000 dollar watch would be kinda out of my financial comfort zone. I would really love to see a video where you show a couple of watches for less - maybe some Seiko's, Orient's, Junghans' (or MVMT, haha). I love your style and your taste when it comes to watches, many other people seem to appreciate very bold watches with a huge diameter more. I love your "understatement"-desire!
As always, all the best from Aachen, Germany!
Don't hold your breath for a MVMT video... LOL. Good ideas! Thanks.
great video as always 💗
Brain; we want updated watch collection video.
In the works for next month!
can't wait. XD
Congratulations mate... Well done. I love stories like that. Had a similar thing happen to me over a model car...
Thanks! What car?!
He Spoke Style there is a model car brand called CMC. Back when I was much younger I collected model cars.
Anyway, I have some of my nicer models in a cabinet in my office. We were selling the home and had a open house inspection. One of the attendees took a shine to the model cars and offered me nearly $6000 for a CMC Ferrari. Apparently it was quite rare and upon research it was a fair price. I paid around $300 for it...
@@kurjan1 Wow! That's so amazing.
Congrats brother that was a great investment! You hit the nail on the head by saying to wear your watches and enjoy them. So what’s that next watch for you?!
Thanks! Stay tuned! Updated watch collection video coming next month.
Thinking of another similar luxury sports watch?
Anyway, I remember in your last collection video that you wanted a Lange 1 in pink gold. I say go for it! I'd love to see how you'd style it with clothes!
Definitely still want that Lange 1!
Good LORD Brian. That's a hell of a turnaround, and good call to pay off debts with that.
Cheers.
Damn... respect for the maturity though. I could have not let it go.
Yea the market doubled in such a short time. Hype beast mode. Thanks you tubers lol
And IGers.
Incredible, well done sir !
Many thanks!
