I remember Stern saying he doesn't want PP becoming another "Royal Oak Co." like AP, and that is one of the reasons he said 5711 is discontinued. If that is the case and Stern stands by his word, maybe there won't be a replacement for 5711 that looks the same with new movement. Maybe something entirely new? Who knows...

5980 will be replaced with the new changes they incorporate on the updated 5711 - as you noted, it makes sense to start at the bottom and work your way up. New clasp, screws rather than pins in the bracelet & possible quick release like AP and VC perhaps?

  • @watchonchain1974

For the 5990 steel I wouldn't be surprised if the lineup is more gold heavy going forward. People won't have much of a problem with higher retail price but they can't just increase the price 50% 70% so I think Patek will tweak it with the range. More gold and new reference costing more than the old. I must say I hope they won't do what AP did and just update the watch which kind of sucks if you have the old one but I think they understand creating value for the collector better. Also if I am not mistaken the 5980 steel was in production a similar period than the 5990 steel. The 5711 and 5712 have been in production for much longer period.

Regarding the Hublot, remember LVMH owns Hublot and Tiffany so they can color anything they want in that color esp for all those ppl that buy Hublot and want it LOL
Also PP may be dropping the 5990 to further cut down the stainless models. They don’t like having so many stainless options, PP loves precious metals….

Eric, 2026 is the 50th anniversary of the Nautilus so I think nothing will happen till then and suddenly 💥BANG 💥 we will get a precious metal 5711. Don’t forget what Mr Stern said in his NYC Times interview back in 2021, Patek Philippe has always made watches in precious metal and the company can not be overshadowed by a steel sports watch. And you don’t have to be Patekholic to see it coming 😉

Just my 2 cents. My boss had this watch back in 2013. Gold 3 hand. He was long long long time Patek customer. He wore the watch to the office and I shouted Rick were you going with Nautilus!??! Come back here! He got a good laugh he was so giddy over this giant watch. Then the magic wore off and he got tired of people making comments. He stopped wearing it and went back to the Patek dress watches. It made me think it's a bit much.

Patek can't really increase sales with pre owned watch mania. They need a banger that will allow them to keep their ADs from picking their noses all day watching paint dry. Because they sure aren't selling popsicle color Rolexes to walk ins. Lol. Patek haven't released a hot new sports model in a long long time. Their brand is at peak gotta have it I don't care how much. Perfect time to release a new chronograph that will be a rich man's Daytona the way the Aquanaut is a rich man's Submariner. Calatrava isn't really on anyone's Instagram feed. The dress watch game is for the old guys. Patek know they have to sow the acorns for new younger customers with crypto millions.

my guess: they wont do steel nautiluses anymore or if they do, it will be very limited editions of a new version of the 5711 for speial clients like the olive or tiffany dials, nothing else. All nautiluses will remain only precious metals. Note they have a new clasp on the 5990R so they will update the others accordingly if they keep them in the catalogue.

Patek is privately owned and does not have to answer to shareholders for short term profit. How long are they going to provide support and make spare parts for these multiple discontinued models. Their AD saying you don’t own a PP you are saving it for the next generation is BS. killing more steel versions thus moving upmarket, and given that the brand has always been culling models that were only a year in production

Hold stock, discontinue, sell in the back? Wherever there is power, greed, and money, there is corruption.

The whole watch market is stupid right now, due the the grey dealers who manipulate the market with the "secret" dealer chats !It;s not the manufacturers anymore who set the prices and that's well known. But all good as long as they're rich suckers who pay,,,What goes up, comes down as well, remember 2008?

Ummmm. “Secret Chats” don’t manipulate the market. Lack of supply and people buying them at premiums do.

PP is not all that. I have in the watch game for 30+ years and not that impressed with how PP is run as a company. There is a reason Rolex is THE master.
