- From a casual hockey fan perspective, that was probably an entertaining game. From a Colorado Avalanche point of view it was as frustrating as you could be.
The Colorado Avalanche did a lot of good, even great, things in their Game 1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. But once again, goaltending let them down in the 7-6 loss.
One has to wonder if the Avalanche let Alexandar Georgiev in net for Game 2. He's clearly not right and hasn't been for weeks.

Jets should’ve gotten a penalty for too many men on the ice for Georgiev being out there.

ME in 2020 against Dallas "Boy if we had a goalie we could be champions!" (Hutchenson was never our goalie I don't blame him)
Me in 2021 against Vegas "Boy if Grubauer didnt suck we could of won that series" (When he lost that puck around the boards I lost my mind)

Yeah, now enough is enough. Realistically, we've blown this season with the love of Georgiev, so sad.
Did georgiev play bad?. Yes
Is my patient for his play at its end? Yes
Do i think annunen should play game 2 if possible? yes.
Letting in 4 on 10 shots is not acceptable.
On a personal level I do feel bad for him though.
But the silver lining is that I do think the avs can win but georgiev can't and don't give them that opportunity.
I don't feel bad for a millionaire goalie who isn't beer league level, oh no.
#40’s confidence is gone. The skaters don’t trust him(they shouldn’t). What a waste of some prime years of great players. This is on Georgiev, management, and even coaching. What a shame.

Manson is the reason for three goals based on amateur gaffs.
I will give you the turn over up the middle of the ice, but for stretches of game he was creating chance and playing well defensively. For sure loved the intensity and he played with all game
@@johnhunt8865 I will agree he created a few chances out there but Manson is NO Makar. He does not have the skating ability to pinch in the offense and be able to get back to position. He needs to be careful not to get caught. One other gaff I noticed, and this is something you teach in youth hockey is taking the body in front of the net. I feel he got lazy and tried to take a stick when he should have just smoked the guy. Cost us another goal. He tightens up his play based on those two gaffs, he will be more effective. We need to have some thunderous hits on the Jets in Game 2. They are skating confidently and 1 or 2 jarring hits and all of a sudden they will cough the puck up and make mistakes if they think they are going to get laid out.

That attempted pass by Manson that immediately turned into a Winnie goal was something you learn (or should learn) not to do when you're in pee wees. I was dumbfounded to see an NHL player attempt that play.
I love hockey, never got to play it myself, and I know it's a stupid play. I'm pretty sure I was close to a stroke when that happened.
Manson was the best defenseman on the ice for 59 minutes of the game. I'll take the 1 turnover for how good he played every day of the year.

I wonder if the 4gieve chants from opposing fans will put a fire under his ass. If Justice is healthy by game 3 he'll likely start. I just never understood the lack of trust on back up goalies when your starting let's in 4 regularly.

As bad as 4g was, I’m glad we didn’t see Holm. To put it this way, when I see him in net for the Eagles, I usually write the game off as an auto loss. That being said, I’ve been hoping that Frankie just shows up out of nowhere to save this team…I REALLY don’t want to see 40 in an Avs jersey ever again! Biggest player regression I’ve ever seen over the course of one season

I feel for Georgiev as he seems like a standup guy and is a good goalie, but the Avs just need to move on. We can't expect to out score every team throughout the playoffs.
Gerogie has had way too many let downs over the season and yet again he flat out cost the Avs this game. It's wild that the winningest goalie, that made All Stars, would be no surprise to get traded in the off season for poor performance.
We have for sure seen the last start from gorgiev. If annunen isnt ready for game 2 get ivan to winnepeg, and make the change later. If it is an option i dont think we should see georgiev dress again

The avalanche are an all or nothing offensive team with activated defence man on the attack. That is why they have the best offence in the league.
The jets are a defensive counter punching team, that scores on breakouts after securing a rebound.
This is a stylistic nightmare on Colorado and less to do with the goaltender who is average at best.
Colorado would have still lost with the other goaltender. It’s the coaches fault for not making adjustments.
You need a tight defensive structure to beat the jets, which Colorado doesn’t have.
As bad as the goaltending was last night, I’m actually more confident now in their chances to win the series even after the loss. My main concern going in was the Jets D which made the Avs skaters look average during the season. Avs seem to have figured that piece out and had they not, I didn’t really give them much of a chance as you can’t win that series without pushing the play and peppering Helle. Keep that up, get better than a .696 save percentage and they have a shot even if Juice is still sick and Georgiev is forced to go again tomorrow night. That’s the optimism. The pessimism is that the poor goaltending may be too much to overcome 🤷🏼♂️
Hellebuyck has a bad game and the Jets win...what happens when he has a good game?.....Both goalies were ass tonight....but that means both teams were equal in scoring....Jets have been listening for weeks how they can't compete w their conference and that they are frauds...seems to have fired them up...end result they're undefeated since people have called them a joke...
I really wanted the Avs to try to pry Markstrom from Calgary at the deadline. Hopefully in the offseason.
Georgiev met his limitation. Imagine knowing you are struggling at your job and millions of people publicly are saying you should be fired. Doesnt help his confidence in the slightest.

It’s less about the fact he gave up 7 in game 1. The bigger story is that the Avalanche dominate the first 10 min of the 2nd period by holding Winnipeg to one shot at home!!!!!!! (By the way that one shot was a clear by Dillon when the Avalanche were in their zone for almost a full 2 minutes)
He let in an absolute muffin shot to make the game 4-3 to WPG, he’s not making timely saves like Vasi, helleybuyck, bobrovsky, or Igor. Whenever the Avalanche built momentum in this game, he let in a goal to kill that momentum.

Yes, Georgiev was/is terrible. But, Avs should be alarmed by what happened on goals 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. Goal 2 - The Manson Bakery serving up turnovers. Goal #3 - Manson losing Scheifele at the top of the crease. Goal #4 - Bad play at the blueline by Toews, Lowry scores from 12' away on what goalies consider the hardest shot to stop (through the triangle). Goal #5 - Mackinnon left to defend Lowry one-on-one (well, tried to defend). Goal #7 - Two D can't stop Connor from in-tight. So all this to say, goaltending IS an issue, but the Avs have other warts they need to clean up as well.

Kyle just constantly going "if this one thing was different the Avs win, or if this other thing were different, the Avs win." As if the game wouldn't play out differently if the score were different. Lol he blows game 1, and now people want to be brutally honest about his horrible play…he’s been playing this way since the all star break. I heard someone on the after show say, “they’ll address his play, and make adjustments for game 2. We are way past the making adjustments phase. If they haven’t addressed what’s happening with him pre-playoffs, then doing it now is way too late. We should have been calling a spade a spade the whole time. People kept saying oh come playoffs he’ll tighten up. 🙄 idk any other job where they lie to you about your performance

I don’t think it’s fair to just blame the goalie. The goals were mostly defensive breakdowns. The players need to be better defensively.
They played a part. No net front defense and Girard isn’t going to help in that regard.
At least they're consistent in that they gave up 7 on their previous meeting with the Jets.
If you put up 4-6 on Hellebuyck, that's a game you should win. Hellebuyck isn't going to play that poorly through the entire series, and the Avs can score, but they're not scoring 5 every night. They came out roaring and played the better game, and this one is solidly on the goaltender. Annunen needs to get the start. What's the worst that can happen?
After all that, the early whistle on Wood robbed them of a goal that would have made it a tie when they got the last one with Georgiev pulled. I'll give them this: they never gave up. The Jets can't be any more pleased with this win than we are with this loss.
The bar isn't even that high with the Avs: a serviceable goalie. Not a great goalie. But they can't even seem to find a serviceable one. Next year, they better be on a mission to get a GOOD goalie. Before the window closes.
One stat I saw the other day is also telling about the defense: no Avs were in the top 10 for blocked shots.

Jets have outscored the Avs 24 to 8 in four games. The only difference here is that the Avs scored more but couldn't match the depth of the Jets. If they cannot be better defensively, game two will not have a better result.

Jets Fan: The funny thing is Georgiev is capable of having an excellent bounceback game tuesday night. Arvid Holm was in the Jets system. He was serviceable but I felt he would be an AHL career goaltender. If Annunen is good to go I think I would start him.

It was 7-4 for the jets, so you lost well before you got 6 basically garbage time goals. Defence wins championships both teams need to improve or this will be the only series they win.
How are you going to still give him the bad pass and turnover crap? Dude, he’s a goalie! He is supposed to stop them sometimes! One or two here and there is fine. Not every shot. This was not and never has been a defensive issue. He doesn’t have the spark to be a starter in the NHL and I’ve been saying it since last season. His good numbers were only good because of the team in front of him. He didn’t show anything special or incredible. The defense limited his shots against to 23. 23! He let in 7. That in and of itself in a playoff game in the NHL is incredible. It’s never been a defensive issue. I can’t believe Sakic and bednar let go of Byram and “fixed” their nonexistent 2c problem, barely might I add, and didn’t touch goaltending. Effing outrageous.

Tough choice Bednar has. Stay with Georgiev, who is easy to score on(high glove side), or go with a young playoff untested Annunen. Avs defense didn't help, and give some credit to the offensive capabilities of the Jets. It is too late in the season to have to make a decision like this. The Avs won't put 6 on Hellebuck again. Not looking good.
Remove "high glove side" for a more accurate description. He has to make the move if Annunen can play. Can't wait until you're down 2-0. Also, can't imagine #40 on the team next year, so may as well see what you got in the kid right now cause you already know what you have in his counterpart, and it's not good enough to win this series.

The Avs need to shoot from the outside which is Hallybuck's weakness. It's been proven in Game 1.

The exact same thing was said about Markstrom after game 1 against the Oilers 2 years ago. For me it's not about the 6 goals it's the control of play dominance that we've grown accustomed to from the playoff Avs. With shot totals like 45 to 23, Hellebuyk isn't going to only allow a max of 2 goals either, end of the day we are a better team we just need competent goaltending
The statistics you cite just prove that hockey statistics are BS. Georgiev faced only one high danger chance? Namestnikov alone in front of the net is one. Lowry walking in on Georgiev twice practically unimpeded are two more. Connor (stupidly) passing the puck away on a two on one instead of shooting on the Georgiev sieve is another. Throw the stats in the garbage. What good are statistics if they don’t accurately describe reality?
Dear God Georgiev is a terrible goal tender. All he needed to do was make just one more save against Helleybuck on 22 shots and thats still too much for him to do. He should be ashamed every time he laces up his hockey skates and going out on to the ice.

Two things I'll say. When the Avs turn over the puck, they do it well. The Avs are overrated. They're team D is quite brutal. Seeing the constant trend of goalie blaming. Maybe if they played better D and less O they could allow a goalie to get some confidence. Just sayin'.
So pathetic, it was obvious that georgiev wasn't going to be a #1, just by watching him this season and last season. A Good lesson for Joe sakic, goalkeeping matters.

I think you are blaming your goaltender for your systemic defensive mistakes. Av's cannot handle a heavy forecheck. Expecting your goaltender to stop wide open shots from 5 feet away is asking too much of any goaltender. Until the Av's start committing to playing defense they will lose. They are not winning this series and it has nothing to do with Georgiev.
First time I’ve watched your podcast - and you’re the Giorgiev of hockey podcasting. By the fifth minute you hadn’t made a definitive statement about anything - every statement was both options, every time LOL. Perhaps understand the nuances of the sport you intend to podcast about. Cheers.

Between Georgie and Manson they completely sabotaged the Avs. They both should be benched.
Jets fan here. Yeah, I hear your frustration re Georgiev. If I'm looking at this from the Avs perspective, he could have/ should have saved JoMo's goal and Lowry's 2nd. (Lowry's 1st in the goalie's triangle was a great shot.) The Namestinikov goal is on Manson. But Georgiev needs to get back in the net faster than that. IMHO, I don't think Helle would have saved the Jets other 4 goals.... So if you take out Georgiev, it could have been 5-4 or 6-4 Avs....
Kemper did better with one eye we should have kept him instead of signing this clown
As a Jets fan, that was a total nail biter on our side. Although I will say, it bodes well for us that we managed to beat the Avs at their own game. Next game, I would count on the Jets being way more defensively sound and way less run-and-gun.
Oh yes, you guys can finally slaughter Georgiev! “Ein innerer Reichsparteitag” especially for Kyle. But short-sighted as you guys are, you do not see who is really at fault. Would the “great” GM MacFarland had hired Quick last season or Allen this season, the Avs would have a backup goalie to switch to with a lot of playoff experience, and for Quick even a Stanley Cup champion. So MacFarland is at fault, not only for a missing experienced backup goalie, but for weak and cheap additions to the forward squad. Mittelstadt will never be a quality 2C like Kadri and Duhaime and Trenin are just 4th line additions. Depth makes champions and that’s where it is lacking for the Avs, beginning with the backup goalie. But at least, you guys have your fun to blame ALL on Georgiev even mistakes like that stupid blind pass from Manson to Namestnikov. It is a wasted time to listen to that!
The Avalanche deserved to lose, they scored two deflections and one bouncy bouncy goal to even come close.

If the refs don't blow the whistle early on a goal by Wood, the Avs actually tie it up in the waning moments. All the goals count.

Anyone who went into this series expecting to win hasn’t been paying attention. This team is TOAST. They can’t stop giving up 7 goals every game. They’re by far the worst defensive team in the playoffs. They will be swept.

You guys were down 7 to 4 for goodness sakes you act as if your goalie was terrible. Your defence was terrible stop making excuses and yeah, Helleybuck played bad but he’s not gonna be like that forever.
Our defense was bad? We let up 23 shots compared to 46 that's literally double. 2.1 compare to 4.8 expected goals that's a game completely on the goalie. 6 to 1 in high danger shots like what are you even talking about?

Every statistical metric actually proves you are wrong. And this has been going on all season with Georgiev, not just tonight. The Avs dominated and could not get a save. Been a story all year with this team.
