Don't Buy the Wrong Air Gun

  • Dr. Russ shares his tips on not buying the wrong air gun. Unfortunately, we often don’t do the right research in finding an air rifle that meets our personal shooting needs. Before long, we have 3 or 4 air guns, shooting only the 4th, while still looking for a fifth. Dr. Russ lists the various priorities in having your air gun meet your needs … going beyond the favorites of just budget and esthetics. It really doesn’t matter if you purchase an air gun from Air Arms, Air Force, Avenger, Beeman’s, Benjamin, Crosman, Daisy, Diana, FX, Hatsan, Kral, Ruger, Seneca, Sheridan, Sig Sauer, and Umarex, just to name a few. Do your research and include the independent priorities found in this video.

    Dr Russ, I am jealous of you and your backyard because of the same items you are discussing on today's video. I live in a subdivision on a lot that is 80 feet by 155 feet. Lately my neighbor's have been getting harder and harder to get along with because of all the BS about gun ownership. I am getting tired of having to talk with the police just about everytime I go out onto the deck to shoot at my targets in the backyard. I hate BB guns as a 75 year old man I have a Benjamin Akela which I love but now the police hate it in my town. Keep educating us Dr Russ.

      Good to hear from you John Klenzak ... using our air guns in a friendly back yard environment is a challenge. Sometimes you have to look at different aspects of being a neighbor ... as I often use my snow blower to clean a neighbors driveway during the winter... or in some other way,.... prove that I am a good friend to have as a neighbor.... then be good as an airgun neighbor too. consider shooting inside your home thru a window to your outside range... out of sight ... out of mind. I do that too.... Dr.Russ

    I did research and digging before I found your channel and before I bought my first air gun. I ended up buying a Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X Gen 2. Not gonna lie, I was worried when I first found your channel and I started watching all your episodes that I might not have purchased the right gun. I was very happy to see your reviews and thoughts on my Gamo model, and I am glad I purchased the right gun for my needs.
    I love your videos, and I plan on going through all of your “are you a good air gunner” videos this weekend. I enjoy them tremendously.
    I like your entrepreneur business model in this video also! It sucks that I live in California and I’m almost certain that business wouldn’t work here. I’m definitely going to look into it though. I had critters coming onto my property harassing and attacking my cats. And my cats are not aggressive cats at all, they literally make friends with squirrels 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣 so it would be nice to help other people protect their fur babies from predators as well.

    Without watching the vid, I wish to make my view regards accuracy. Trigger pull has an effect on accuracy. The harder the force required, the less accuracy. Your mileage may vary, but, I think shooting beyond 50-75 yards might be better with something like the "set trigger" system. Barring that, a 3.5 to 5 pound pull may be desirable. Am I wrong? Why?

    Been obsessing over what guns I want for a bit now. Want to do a variety of things from 25 yards to potentially 150 yards. But even though I determined what two rifles I want (Airforce Texan .457 and a FC impact m3)… I’m new and haven’t played with one yet. So spending over $3500 on guns alone didn’t make sense. Not even the $1300 Texan.
    I ended up buying something right in the middle of the two… the Benjamin Bulldog bundle. Looking for videos on it and after days I stumbled upon your channel. I also bought a pcp compressor.

You will find lead rounds in 35 caliber ... and 9 mm at gun stores and gun shows ... stay clear of the 357 magnum because they are a few thousands too big ... also stay away from any copper jacketed bullets... they can get stuck in the barrel and wear out the rifling. Dr. Ross. Check the laws in your locality. Consult with a lawyer who is licensed to practice law in your locality. I live in California. I can shoot pests, for free, on private property, with an airgun, not with a gunpowder gun. However, if I charge for that service, I either have to possess a California Agricultural Pest Control Operator's license, or a California Field Apicator's license, which will allow me to work for another California Agricultural Pest Control Operator, but not to have my own company. Be careful about what you're telling people that they can legally do.

    The more I learn about air guns, the more confused I am. I need an inexpensive air gun that is accurate to shoot skunks and armadillos in my yard at night to about 25-30 yards max. What fps rating do I need to be accurate at this range? Also, can you recommend a lesser expensive scope I can use at night. I will only be using this gun for two things: First to learn how to use it and become accurate, then occasionally I will need to shoot it at night for these varmints. I don't plan to set up targets and plink. Lastly, which .177 grain ammo should I buy to be the most accurate?

    • @russjones6497
      @russjones6497 Před rokem

      Jim ... it is good to hear from you... and I believe you need a good air gun to accomplish the task before you. You will never get good optics especially ones that will enlighten the target at early dusk and dawn... you need good optics and I plan to share an excellent source within two weeks... but again they wont get any better than I described. For your problem, you need night vision equipment and scope that costs well over $600....or best still is throwing on an outside back yard light at the last moment. Secondly, you are after skunks and armadillos ... and a 177 caliber will wound more than kill... I suggest you step up to a 25 caliber for those destructive critters. If you have coyote or woodchucks, I think you need to step up to a 357 caliber. Consider purchasing a refurbished air gun to get the best bang for your buck... I have a video for that subject ... which has several choices to review... . Be sure to watch my video on "Buying the right caliber" which includes their ranges and the critters that they will harvest. Click on the small circular photo of myself to access our channel of almost 90 videos ... and scan them for the videos I reference. Now to ammo... accuracy comes with a smooth barrel that has been leaded in (meaning that 100 to 500 lead pellets need to be fired first to fill in the small craters and scarred rifling that is only visible with a microscope. Secondly, you need a heavy lead pellet for accuracy ... and some bullet or pellet lube for velocity... be sure you watch my videos on that topic so that you do it right. The larger calibers will allow you to go for a body shot kill versus a smaller head shot kill. Jim, keep us in your air gun info loop ...and let us know how you progress towards your goals... So you are saying that someone who has no room to practice shooting airguns should start a pesting company? Terrible advice, this is how people end up hurt when others who have no clue on how powerful their guns are go and start shooting up peoples property.

      Airguns of Michigan ... good to hear form you again. Some air gunners will find this entrepreneurial idea a good one... There are certainly those who go into this business without any air gun experience ... hopefully ... our air gunners can fit this need where and when needed... If not... they will go out of business as soon as they went in.... Dr. Russ
