  • We often believe we have the best air gun possible because we found a deal on it … or our best friend told us that it was the best air gun possible. However, Dr. Russ provides a list of air rifle features, and a method of truly comparing one air rifle with another, insuring that we really did find and own the best air gun possible. In this Air Rifle Adventure Video, Dr. Russ provides that Deal Breaker List. #airgun #airrifle #airguns

    Dr. Russ, It’s nice joining you again this summer. Last July I heard my neighbor in North Carolina firing something, and went to check it out. It was an air gun. I’m about your vintage, but probably an with an extra click, or two. I hadn’t fired a rifle in over 55 years. I bought an inexpensive Gamo, and with your help, and knowledge, have had a great deal of enjoyment since then. I now have many of your videos to catch up on. I’m looking forward to an interesting summer. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us all. Ken

    My deal breakers are an adjustable regulator and hammer spring at a minimum. If i can adjust the transfer port that's icing on the cake. Reason being. I can't get within 120+ yards from the Rock Chucks on our ranch. They are always paranoid. Being able to adjust for best accuracy, power, and shot count is important to me to have ethical kills one after another. A threaded barrel for a suppressor is another must. The adjustability of the buttpad and cheek rest is no big deal. A company on eBay makes Neoprene stick on rests to any thickness, design, shape, and color you want for $20 I need a Picatinny on the foregrip for a bipod and tripod mount. The Taipan Veterans tick all the boxes for me. Excellent video. You made some good points I haven't thought of. Hope your weather is nice soon. Have a great evening Doc,

    Dr. R Russ, excellent video as usual.
    Yes, what goes around comes around. A good thing to remember.
    Recently, while working on our 50th class reunion, I was told of two little things I had done over 50 years ago that had a profound effect on two other kids. They were simple things, and at the time, I thought minor. Not to them.
    It was a real life lesson and reminded me;
    "Do what you know is right, always be kind. You never know what your actions may mean to others."
    It might come back around, even if it takes 5o years.
    Keep up the good work, we out here in the ether are enjoying it, Thanks.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +5

      Good to hear from you again Mike ... the most important news I can give your wife is that dobermans are not the ferocious guard dogs that they have a reputation for... in fact ... all police and military units have gone back to German Shepherds... dobermans are known as "touchers" or "Velcro dogs" because they are really not happy unless they are leaning into your leg or laying on a foot while you read or knit etc. They watch over your kids ... and your home ....and will bark when necessary ... however, we have trained ours not to bark because that is necessary when raising "Service Dogs". Hotels, motels, restaurants, hospitals etc wont allow any dog in ... that isn't a Service Dog. In fact, when you train a dog not to bark ... ie they cant go to first base ... then they cant go to second, third bases or home plate either ... which is to attack, bite, or for some breeds like pit bulls ... kill. In recommending puppies to any new owner without specifying the breeds.... I tell them to look at dogs with short hair so that shedding isn't a problem... also that the dogs have a long nose so that they don't drool ... and since all dogs are olfactory ... meaning that their brains actually store smells versus pictures ... long nose dogs seem to be more intelligent to me and I have raised all kinds of dogs over my life time. Mike... when possible ... visit a litter of puppies with your wife.... Dr. Russ

    Good video. I find myself with one important deal breaker and that is i won't pay more than $300 for a pellet gun. Pellet guns fill a small roll here and if need be powder is much more efficient in many cases for larger game or longer distances. I mainly shoot 17 and 22 caliber air guns and mainly multipump or springers. That is what i find to fit me and my situation the best. That being said i tend to steer toward crosman/benjamin products just because thats what i know the best. Not to say i dont have other brands that i love to shoot and are just as accurate for me.

    I want the regular version in right hand walnut 177cal. It's already shrouded and baffled for quietness. The full length version was reviewed by AEAC channel. The full length is easy to cock and the one most used in competition. It's also available in 22cal.

    DOC, I have been thinking along those same lines with the break barrels. I have benjamin and hatsan. there is a PCP I like that is easy to fill with a hand pump. that is the Walther Reign. the tank holds 3,000psi but it shoots the most accurate and most power at 1,600psi. pumping half a tank isn't difficult. I have the Reign in .22 and plan on ordering one in .25. however, I need more break barrels. I like those you pre-viewed recently. great video.

    I just got a 25 caliber Zada springer. Thankfully it`s very accurate at the ranges I need for rabbits and squirrels here in rural Louisiana and it`s really fun to shoot and very powerful. I have their 22 caliber Airtact springer as well and stocked up fast on some half price pellet deals. I`m poor but I feel very lucky to have such nice quality and powerful prepping tools for such a low price. They`ve filled in a big gap in my food and garden pest control 'preparedness plan. I could have gotten refurbs for half what I spent but wanted new ones that weren`t possibly misused or defective. I`ll likely try a refurb as backup if they aren`t sold "as is." Thank you sir for these extremely useful guides. I`ve learned a lot so far.

    Hey Dr. Russ!!!
    I always love your videos. You are soooooo knowledgeable and I always rewatch them.
    Just out of curiosity, have you checked out the Benjamin Bulldog in .457? I don't have any large bore airguns but was debating on buying the .357 Bulldog but now that the .457 is out I'm pretty sure that's what I'll get. It should be sufficient for mid to large size deer, elk, or razor back hogs. So I think that between my small caliber breakbarells for pesting and small game, I have my bases covered.
    By the way, I didn't know Dr. Paula's and your degrees are in divinity. I always thought you guys were Md's. Now I have even more respect for you.

      Ken Fan ... it is good to hear from you again... and thanks for the compliment .... I have no experience (but will by years end) with the Bulldog 457. My initial concern is the availability of ammo .... determine that before you order. The 357 is also 35 cal and 9mm.... and there is a lot of that available ... even at regular gun shows and sporting good stores that carry reloads. My second concern is what power adjustments are available.... in other words ... what if the 457 only has the same power available as the 357.... then you could use the heaviest 357 available and equal the same energy. I suspect that the 357 will get cheaper as the 457 sales take off ... so get all of the info in front of you before you make that $1,000+ decision. Keep us in your loop .... Crosman has a good warranty and maintenance reputation .... so you are good there. Dr. Russ

    • @minigpracing3068
      @minigpracing3068 Před 2 lety +2

      @@drsrussandpaula From some conversations with Crosman, I can fill in some info. The 457 has a pretty good supply of airgun ammo available. As for power, it is in the 400-450 foot pounds range which is decent, better for deer than the original 357. Downside is that the 457 is going to be a 3 shot per fill. Before today I would have suggested the less expensive Umarex Hammer, but I'm getting a very bad feeling about the barrels. Umarex had me send my first one back because the barrel was junk, received a new one today. Sent my borescope through and this barrel is only slightly better. In my opinion Umarex needs to fire their Hammer barrel manufacturer and high Green Mountain or TJ here in the USA, or go with CZ if they still want to import it. Umarex Support was really good, but I think the barrels may all be junk and it's A lot of money to get a junk barrel. If you look on gateway to airgun forum, you'll find my Hammer barrel videos. Really very disappointed.

    This was quite an education for me. I have always had a couple of break-barrel .177's, but I find they don't kill ground squirrels cleanly unless I manage a head shot and I don''t want them to suffer. DOC, I ordered a Gamo break-barrel in .22cal that is suppressed. It weighs about 6.5 lbs and a velocity of 800-900 fps depending (recoil info). It has iron sites and comes with a scope. I have old eyes and I won't be shooting over sixty feet and mostly way less, truth be told. DOC, if the provided scope doesn't hold up, can you recommend a replacement for $150 or less? The other Q I have is: how do you clean for lead in the barrel/rifling? Many thanks for the great video.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +1

      Good to hear from you Kcender ... I have a video out not too long ago on cleaning air rifles ... and the good news is that you shouldn't worry about it for at least 500 rounds as the barrel leads in ... which means that the pellets are smoothing out the flaws in that barrel that your eyes don't see... in fact it takes magnification to see the small infractions in a barrel that hang up the barrel. I also launched a video titled Buying Refurbished air guns and scopes.... Go to Fieldsupply.com and find discounted scopes as well as refurbished scopes.... Crosman has some CP (Center Point) refurbished scopes that I have found excellent and like new... for $49 and $ 59 .... buy the more expensive if you plan to hunt with it... they are about a third the price of new retail... I shoot my Gamo .17 the most.. but that’s because I can shoot it in my basement. The kids can target practice in the basement with me. It’s just really a great rifle. But, it destroys scopes in short order lol.
    I shoot the .357 bulldog the least. But it’s not the most accurate (I like benchrest type of shooting) and it’s the most expensive to throw lead down the range. That and it’s powerful. Gamo is introducing their Gen 3 this summer for the Swarm Group. ... which I believe will make their gen 2 even cheaper. Consider the Maxxim in 22 caliber (Gamo doesn't offer a 25 caliber in the Swarm Group).... because everything I read doesn't make the gen 3 any better ... maybe a little more powerful ... but that means you will have to use even heavier pellets. I have the Swarm 22 Magnum ... but actually enjoy the Maxxim 22 better. The Hatsan break barrels have barrels that range from 10 inches to 15 inches ... including the multi pellet model... so I am not interested there. I've never hunted the nilgai .. blue cow antelope ... originally from India for our zoos in 1920 ...and introduced later in 1930 to the Texas plains ... Thanks Dr Russ and Dr Paula for sharing your advice. I have found airfiring devices the next best for self-defense and less lethal training. I too am looking to field testing the hatsan blitz, AEA, FX etc. If you were to choose, would go with the 22, 25 or 30? For both target practice and critter control if needed.

      KFX24 ... it is good to hear from you.... My caliber choice is 25 for critters ... and then 357 for larger critters like Coyote, Fox, Snapping Turtle, and Wood Chuck. At the same time, you have to consider your primary shooting range and small back yards with neighbors right next to you might suggest 177 and 22 calibers. Note that I have leaped over 30 caliber... and the reason is two fold. The first is that there isnt a full range of pellets and slugs available that you find for the other calibers. Second is that most 30 calibers are made for air rifles that shoot the 25 and smaller calibers... and that means that that air power is pushing a 30 caliber lead pellet or slug. Often those guns shoot 30 caliber at around 750 fps... while they are able to shoot 25 caliber at 850 and higher. To me ... this means that 30 calibers will likely miss the "sweet spot " that I am looking for accuracy and consistency.. Dr. Russ

    I am new to pcp air guns and have been looking at Umarex air guns particularly the 30 caliber that is a new gun they have come out with. What do you know of the company and the quality of their products. I have seen 30 calibers take down small 50-100 lb animals and thought in a desperate situation could take down a whitetail deer. What are your thoughts in this matter? Money is of course a concern, but I feel comfortable with their price range. Thanks so much for your time and trouble in this matter. God bless you and yours.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +3

      James Ragsdale Jr. ... it is good to hear from you .... Umarex is a German brand and German engineers designed it ... so I find the 3 in my collection very good air guns. I have stayed away from 30 caliber for several reason... first, there are not a lot of pellet choices available for it .... Each state has its own rules for legal deer rifles and while a few don't allow any air rifles for deer ... the majority ask for any caliber higher than 30 caliber. So I am very comfortable with the 357 ... with lots of pellet choices available. Keep in mind the range for killing a deer with an air rifle is less than with powder guns, because their velocity is less. Dr. Russ

    What evidence do you have that a choked barrel is responsible for the "popping" sound after a pellet leaves the barrel? I thought the gas pressure causes the pellet skirt to expand to conform to the bore and rifling of the barrel whether the barrel is choked or not.

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +2

      Tyrone ... it is good to hear from you. You are correct in what the skirt of a pellet does in either a choked or unchoked barrel. My comment was also that the gas escaping at the end of either a choked or unchoked barrel ... without a moderated barrel or a suppressor will make a pop. My experience has been that slugs are made for unchoked barrels... and can wear out the rifling of choked barrels ... which I believe are made primarily for Pellets.

    You are knowledgeable about air guns, but you aren't knowledgeable about current events, or the history of Russian and Ukraine. It's easy to look at the Russia vs Ukraine situation through the lens of fox news, OAN or Newsmax but it's another story to look at it with the knowledge and insight of scholarly research and a historical basis from which to view events. There is a long history of Ukrainians (particularly those in western Ukraine) supporting Nazis. Did you know that when the Germans led by the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, thousands of Ukrainians greeted them with flowers? Did you know that many of the guards at the Nazi concentration camps were Ukrainians? NATO is a gang of thugs who is supporting Neo-Nazis in Ukraine (The Azov Battalion is clear evidence of this), if it were an organization that was brought about to defend Western Europe from "communism" (which we are told to believe), then it would have dissolved when the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact dissolved. You should stick with air guns and leave the lecture on politics to those who know more than what the right-wing corporate media is promoting.
