Hey Dr Russ. I am a retired cop and spent 8 years in SWAT. Shooting the hand or throat is ill advised. In a hostage scenario as you present, shooting the gun hand will be a challenge as the suspect moves about. He can also discharge the weapon as a reflex. Hitting the throat is not a bad option if he did not have a hostage.
Here, the only option is what we call the T zone. Superimpose a “T” over the suspects eyes and nosebridge. That is where you shoot. An airgun may not have enough FPE and expansion to cause a suspect to drop immediately.
However, airguns like the Texan, AEA .357, Bulldog at sub 15 yard range will most likely have the desires effects.
My kids and I love your channel. You are the best.

I accidental stumbled upon this channel and must say it's one of the best and most level headed videos I've seen on the topic. In my country firearms are strictly regulated but we are allowed to own .177 air rifles so it was good seeing possible ways to use in a self defense scenario. I particularly liked the part about having a plan and not killing. I'm not sure what the laws are in the US but here if you kill someone in self defense you better have a good reason. I've seen way too many videos advocating using an AR15 as the ultimate home protection tool in houses made of what I believe to be wood and drywall with no thought of the effects of that round. And there are too many videos advocating killing your attacker without explaining what can be the legal ramifications. Keep up the excellent work and I totally love your yard and property

I'm new to the world of air gunning, and it's from guys like you that I learn more and more about the sport...thanks for the work that you put into these videos!
I own many air pistols, and my 2 most powerful air pistols would by my Gamo PT85, and my Crosman Vigilante.
They both shoot at over 420-450 feet per second, and they both are rapid fire.
Well, the Gamo is semiautomatic with a 16 round clip and the Vigilante is rapid fire shot after shot.
In terms of self defense, I would ALWAYS try to not use violence, but unfortunately we live in a world where sometimes force is necessary, and I'm raising 2 young kids totally on my own.
What PISTOL would you recommend for self defense, or what semiautomatic pistol is the strongest with the highest velocity??
    Any info would be appreciated!!

Keep in mind that many men talk the talk ... and want the opportunity to kill someone breaking into their homes... and yet they dont read the news ... that even cops go to jail ... or get fired ... for shooting people. The concept of using lesser force ... if possible is the one that I want to be a part of my journey going forward. I killed too many Vietcong ... including young women and boys already... which make up my memories and dreams. Secondly, there are also cases where a father shoots one of his own children sneaking back into the house at night ... and after using a 357 or 44 magnum ... their child is dead before the ambulance is even called. BB's and Pellets to the nose ... the neck ... can kill ..... and even the buttock will keep a burglar running away and hurting. Afterall, even a birdshot from a shotgun is deadly even though it fires bunch of tiny bbs. Rapid fire airguns will also be very deadly. It's just math of how many bbs you re shooting and at what fps. Jef Bretschneider ... when it comes to scopes ... I am more comfortable recommending features than brands ... unless one really stands out. I recommend a scope that has a 50 mm front lens ... as well as a front lens adjustment for distance (referred to as AO) ... At lease 4X12 adjustable power ... plus tall rings for best comfort and mil dots or hash marks for adjustments for wind and distance.... In the event you hunt taking critters at early morning light or late afternoon light... consider a 30 mm tube versus a one inch tube ... and lit us cross hairs for low light... I hope these features help... Dr. Russ

Good Ben Talley.... movies make us believe that an intruder will drop out of the sky in a Ninja suit with throwing stars ... but the truth is that it is often just a teenager looking for marijuana money. Here in Detroit, a man shot his own daughter ... who was trying to get back into her home late .... after curfew ....secretly without alarming her dad ... she died. He will never recover.... See the big picture... Even a CO2 pistol will give an intruder a lot of reasons to leave your home when discovered.... Dr. Russ

Marbles in a slingshot. Bad idea. You can't shoot far, fast, or do damage. Best is probably 3/8" (8mm) ball bearings, which most of us use for hunting and targets. I design, build and shoot Slings (no two alike) and that's how I evolved into air. Plus, I easily always have about 15 balls in my pocket and a sling within 20' unless my Air pistol is nearby. For a mugger, active shooter or any large object that I might want not-breathing-now, there are usually two 7/16" balls in the pocket; easy to identify by feel.

Thanks for another great video. I bought my air rifle for home defense...after a creep tried to enter my home while I was out...and my wife was home alone....and I wanted something she could use. My wife is unfortunately, Anti-gun....so an air rifle is a happy compromise....(whatever works) I have learned a lot since purchasing it.
(Seneca Aspen .25) I tinkered with it...pellet and nsa slug experimentation as well...It will do the job...in grand fashion...if needed. I always say "More info...is always better". I look forward to the Next video...

Shun... Seneca Aspen is an excellent gun... and 25 is my favorite caliber... typically because with a quiet barrel... you typically dont have to buy a $300 Modulator too... which is typically necessary for bigger bores to remain backyard friendly.
Consider asking your wife to shoot it ... to hit something easy like an old cast iron frying pan or a bell. If she hits this easy target within 3 shots... you take her out to eat... etc..... once she enjoys your beautiful gun... you may have her suggesting that you buy the next one... and of course she becomes proficient enough to defend herself easily. The Antifa group will be put down quickly. I get what you are saying however....a firearm wont solve this. (It may help but it wont solve it). We the people need to change the environment so that this country lives up to its creed of Freedom and justice for all. If we dont....even worse will occur. Just wait until The current President loses....and watch the Demented fools show all of the nation who and what they truly are. That being said...just because I dont have powder burners in my home...doesnt mean they are not on my property (the mrs doesnt have to know they are there..but they have to be... 2A everyday) Respecting your mates wishes is good for your marriage...preparing for the likely eventuality....is good for your longevity. As a kid, I was disappointed upon hearing that the conductor back in the caboose was in charge of a train instead of the engineer running the locomotive in front. Several years ago, I learned that the anesthesiologist was in charge in the surgery room instead of the surgeon. Evidently, if that patient goes too far under, you might not get him or her back up... which gives you the power to stop or start surgeries. An anesthesiologist stopped a surgery here in Michigan on my 91 year old father before it even started ... saying he was too old to put under.... probably a good call. Fortunately he lived within days of reaching 101.... My wife and I both have our doctorates in divinity ... counseling clergy of all denominations ... they have problems too ... and yet we have never charged for our work in this field .... we made our monies in starting over 20 companies during our life times.... and only recently sold our tax business.... which leaves a heavy trailer hitch business to sell..... and these CZcams Videos ... which even at age 76 will never be sold. with all do respect; this is the worst advice i have ever heard. 1. the plan for the police if i kill an intruder holding a person at gunpoint is "talk to my lawyer." 2. if an airgun is all i have to defend against an armed perp, im shooting him in the eye/face......im not a gambling man so "hoping" he spins and frees the woman seems like a suckers bet. 3 "call the police, they may catch him as he's leaving" no thanks.....i'd rather the cops call the coroner for him. you come into my home armed and taking hostages.....i'm no longer a civillized human; we both become wild animals in a struggle to survive at that point.

Crabtrap... I've also commanded young soldiers who were trained to kill the enemy...cry after they shoot their first one... real killing isn't like the movies portray. Ask the next counselor you meet... the dreams can haunt you for life.... and our military hospitals and even military senior citizen homes are filled with P.T.S.D. patients. Those events arent in the movies either...
My message is to have a long term viable plan... and that killing weapons...including powder guns will be a part of that plan... but you wont need an attorney... or a life of grief is in reality... you show some restraint... rather than showing the world... including a jury.... that you are a wild animal. Dr. Russ

    • @crabtrap
      @crabtrap Před 4 lety +2

@@russjones7981 And I have met and helped people that mistakenly thought if "they went along with the plan, Mr badguy would take what he needed and leave" or "wait for police that showed up an hour later". Rape victims, families of murdered loved ones....as you kno,w they deal with PTSD too. Better a young Marine or Solider have the luxury of coming home to his family with PTSD then decomposing in a rice paddy because he wanted to wait and see how this played out. Also shifting the responsibility for self preservation from yourself to another person(the police) isn't solving any problem, you are just shifting that to another human. is it ok for the Cop to now carry YOUR PTSD because he had to shoot a perp on your behalf?
Hey, if a cop is close at hand great. but that isn't the scenario you laid out here. you have two target examples of armed men with women in choke holds.
this sends a dangerous nonviable survival instruction to especially women, some who will think if i just "go along to get along" everything will be fine. that is rarely the case. those first few seconds are crucial to end being a victim, much more so for women too.

@@crabtrap A point that seems to be forgotten here... especially is you watch Part II... where it is confirmed... is that I am all for carrying weapons that include magnum powder handguns... I carry one everyday on my ankle... the point is that while I am prepared to kill another person ...as I have already done in the past .... I am also prepared to show some restraint with other weapons when the robbery takes place. ...an alternative that will be thankful by the parents of a 15 year old... who broke into your home for marijuana money... and the show of restraint to police ... the prosecutor ... and to the other family... who might otherwise want to follow up with a civil rights lawsuit. A legal defense could cost you $50,000. Lets not forget that I am prepared to end the robbery with a variety of choices ... and it is that multiple method of solving that I believe is a high calling. @@russelljones4132 it been may experience(not in war) but in the night club biz of the inner-city 90's.....that there is a thin line between a 'scuffle' and a to the death fight. shot a perp as opposed to hand fighting him...usually tells his stressed frantic mind (non drugged) that 'the gloves are off" and its ok to attempt to murder or severely maim you. one fight i was involved in mitigating, was 5 on 5 normal stupid drunk testosterone stuff......till one guy pulled out scizzers and stabbed the other, this escalated the situation were one member felt authorized to run the scizzer wielder over....luckily know one died. no one was arrested even though we gave the police a detailed account. point is if you are going to use a item like a pellet gun, you better not bluff and you better inflict maximum damage. you seem to be moving the goalpost on our discussion; im not saying don't use a pellet gun or "shoot to kill with a real gun", you can easily shoot his knee with a .38 if you don't want to kill him....but the lawsuit angle is still in effect, and probably worse because he will lie and say "i just walked into the wrong house and he shot me!" in court.
I didn't even mention how shooting a methhead with a pellet in the shoulder will have zero effect. that's why a face shoot(hopefully eye) is a better bet....you can't 'walk that off'.
given the choice of shoot in the shoulder with pellet or crawl out the window and leave....the better advice is crawl out the window and leave, atleast you haven't given the robber the urge to now commit homocide.
