    Thank you for taking the time and explaining restraint, I believe home protection is important but restraint is vital. You explained the material of the wall in reference to the projectile and the neighbors, I believe that it's one thing that is always overlooked, an innocent person in danger in any other room or house. High caliber firearms can stop an intruder but many don't explain how it can go through a wall and hit a bystander, thanks for the point you made.

      Patrick... It was good to hear from you... I have probably received more criticism on my 2 personal defense videos... than all my other videos combined... of course the complaints came in prior to the black lives matter protests ... and particularly the police who have been jailed or fired... their only defense is going to be that they too showed restraint during those arrests...

    Our county Sheriff and prosecuter have no problems with stand your ground and I too am in Southern Michigan. Example: A few years ago we had a guy with a PPO to stay away from his ex wife because of his violent behavior. The ex wife's dad showed up with his deer rifle and blew the asshole away.
    Dad gets off with justifiable homicide. Reports show that just branding your weapon is enough to stop most criminals. In reality the majority of us will never see this horrible act of violence.

      daveshoraceway .... good to hear from you.... just keep in mind that counties change their rules,.... also change their prosecutors from one election to another.... and times in general change too. Who would believe today that we are attempting to de-fund our police at a time that the FBI says our felonies are up 30% nationwide. It has been a very unusual year for America. I recommend that you keep your air guns handy ... as well as your powder guns... and show whatever police or prosecutor reviews your case ... that you showed whatever restraint that you could afford in your situation. Perhaps you saw the news where a man shot his own daughter trying to sneak back into their home after curfew one night....She died and I am sure he wished he had used less destructive force with her.... Plus, even police today are afraid to shoot ... telling me that we should be very careful in how we use a gun ... even the stings of a BB pistol at low velocity will help you turn around and leave a home. Somehow, we have it in our mind that some mass murderer who has lots of shooting experience is breaking into our home. More often it is after 2 a.m. after the bars close. I just bought my first air rifle at age 59. A Sig Saure ASP20. I’ve been watching tons of videos awaiting its arrival. Then I ran across yours. Very informative & the only site I subscribed to. I’ve never had a hunter or gun person in my life and you fill that need perfect. Great teaching style. My wife is also learning a lot from you. Do you have any plans on doing a review of the Sig ASP20 in the future? Also when you buy a soft rifle case, do you want it to be very tight fitting or a bit roomy? I bought one that will just barley zip closed. Thank you for your great work!

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 Před 3 lety +6

      Shaun McClendon ... excellent choices among the many Spring Piston air guns... I believe Spring Piston can be excellent deterrents to burglars when shot at the right target. My main message is that we want to use alternative choices before we resort to the choices that blow away a burglar. I believe they enter a home with the hope of stealing items that they might get $50 ujp to $500 dollars for .... and a few stinging BB's or salt pellets of the same size from a shotgun ... can go along way in changing their minds. Of course, it helps to have more powerful deterents just in case their motive for breaking in is greater than just petty theft. I know it will help you before a court if you used an alternative ... lesser lethal weapon first. A review of how much trouble police have gotten from public responses on killing.... and they were legally given that job. Finally is the emotional problems that might follow. Soldiers returning from wars certainly deal with this one. Imagine the joy ... and perhaps laughter you might gain 50 years from now ... retelling the story of how you stopped a burglary or personal defense ... when you used a Spring Piston weapon versus a 44 magnum ... that you held in the other hand. Shaun ... thanks for writing ... Dr. Russ

    I've been robbed and burgled a few times in my life and live in a European nation where firearms are very restricted but airguns are not. So I bought a Korean Shinsung Infinity 9mm, learned how to use it and had a lot of fun shooting this bolt action 6 shot heavy rifle, it's about 150 joules of power so enough for medium sized game. One late night I'm sitting behind my PC and see something move by my window, my screen is bright and there is no light outside but I was sure I saw something. My house has a fence around it and is on private property. My rifle was loaded and sitting near me, I grab it and go outside. Feeling scared but happy to have the rifle. My cat came running to me making cute noises, she had gone outside through an open window without me knowing, it was her that I saw. My point is an airgun is not ideal but a hell of a lot better than nothing and I was happy to have it.

I wanted you to consider, that it just might not be practical, for me to get an airgun, charge it, load a pellet into it, in the middle of the night, when someone is breaking in. Realistically, I just keep a real firearm by my bed. I'm 71 years old. I just don't have the capability to stop someone, without a real firearm.

      Long Live Humanity ... it is good to hear from you.... and if you are not comfortable with your air guns then lets not go there.... perhaps another day you will be.... first lets look at the current situation here in 2021.... statistically, the police are much more reluctant to shoot someone and not go to jail... citizens should be too. Citizens (and maybe police do too) have visions that any bad guy is like someone out of the movies ... a trained ninja if you will....and statistically, it is a teenager from up the street or a man whose family wants the media to know what a great person and father he was to 5 children. The prosecuting attorney wants to review the case and determine how well or badly it will play in court, before he presses charges against the police and you.... So what are you and I suppose to do? I believe the answer is that we showed some reluctance or reserve before we fired our weapon ... ie ..." I left the 12 gauge shotgun in the closet and shot the burglar in both legs with a 22 caliber" ... or "I fired my handgun twice into the floor as a warning shot, before I shot him in the chest." Hopefully, you can see preparation for a burglar requires more than just waking up and taking another life. A man here in Detroit shot and killed his own daughter, who was trying to sneak back into their house before her father knew she was gone. As a former Infantry Officer in Vietnam... I still have memories of looking down the iron sights of my M-16 and shooting young members of the Vietcong. who were trying to break through our line. My own preparation for a burglar is considerable ... not wanting to kill another person ... especially a young person. If time permits, I call 911 first... place my bedside 45 semi auto pistol in one hand and a BB pistol in the other (after twisting the CO-2 activator at the base of the handle). Hopefully, I just give the burglar a good case of acne with the BB gun and the 45 stays unfired. I should also add that my first round is snake shot which will do the same as the BB gun ... and not ruin a floor if I shoot it into my carpeted hallway ... followed by some hollow head bullets ... followed with some Teflon covered rounds that will penetrate the car door, the refrigerator or anything else he or she is hiding behind ... including the bullet proof vest of a ninja contract killer. The reason I don't believe he is the latter, is that you and I don't have enough value in our homes to equal a jewelry store etc that does. Long Live Humanity, develop a total defense plan that shows your reluctance and reserve to a burglary. Dr. Russ

      Yes ... I have been hit too with a BB gun thru a layer of clothes and it left a nasty welt on me as a teenager. I don't believe a BB to the chin will knock a person out... A fist to the chin often does, because it moves the chin sideways and that pulls down on some muscles that connect the jaw and the upper skull. The pull momentarily cuts off blood to the brain and causes unconsciousness....A straight on hit would leave a bloody dimple in the chin ... but not knock the person out unless he/she passes out when they see blood. The real answer in these kinds of hit as a defensive weapon is found in your own statement ..."and believe me it is no fun... feels like someone took a concrete block and busted me in the head." It really doeskin take too many hits before a bad guy will turn and run.... Dr. Russ

    Thank you - I never thought of using a slingshot. I should keep my shotgun in reserve and use cell phone, powerful flashlight, slingshot and air pistol first (if intruder doesn't leave). I also have a big can of pepper gel spray which I keep tied to my shotgun. Of course if the intruder(s) has firearms, I have no choice but to use shotgun as my first option. I have loaded my shotgun with couple of less lethal rounds followed by #6 birdshots. One other thing. Very loud alarm/siran which can be tripped by remote is critical in my view, as that will make intruder far more eager to leave and tilt the balance in the home owner's favor.

    As usual, you give me something to think about. For me, I have a break barrel .22 air rifle. I can not see myself realistically carrying it through the house in case of a burglar. I don't like the idea of even a .22 powder pistol for the exact reasons you spoke of. The bullet will travel through the inner walls into another room or two. Also, I've never been very accurate with pistols that I've shot. They have all belonged to friends so I've really not had the practice. However, a strong flashlight and a slingshot is something I feel confident in. I may have to purchase an air pistol and practice with it as a backup. I hope I never have to be in a position that I would need to use that kind of force but it would pay to be better prepared than I am right now. Thank you for the videos. Question: how long can a CO2 cartridge be in a pistol before it would discharge it's self? Say, I had a CO2 pistol in my nightstand and had not touched it for a month, I need to pull it out one night and load a clip with pellets in it, will it still be charged and ready to go?

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +2

      It is good to hear from you Randy ... some air pistols would empty the gas cartridge overnight while more expensive air pistols might last a week. Where as your thought process of using the least weapon 1st (YES always call 911 1st if possible) may be irresponsible for you to say, if an intruder comes into your house and they hear you are home, and don't leave, odds are they will not be warded off easy, if you are going to do other than a firearm, you better have one on your person. The 1500 lumen flashlight will not blind a person for 10 minutes unless they are dumb enough to stare into it for 10 - 15 seconds, odds are 1 second max, and yes constricted pupils, but not blind. Try one of the new 5000 lumen ones perhaps. Thought process is good though, and I do enjoy your video's, I just think if you are going to suggest non lethal items as 1st 4 you should say have your firearm on your person at all times.

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 Před 3 lety +2

      Tom Chrissy ... it is good to hear from you. Thanks for responding with your thoughts on this difficult subject. I did not mean to go forward searching for an intruder without an actual powder gun too. Unfortunately, many homeowners don't have powder guns or allow them in their homes. Few if any have ever had firearm instruction. Few have the gumption to actually shoot to kill an intruder, who turns out to be young or even a girl. In some cases, it is actually just a son or daughter sneaking back into the house after curfew. Our news is filled with cops who are now in trouble ... lost their badges ... and on the other side of the jail bars ... because they were a little quick in pulling the trigger ... on someone who didn't even have a gun. The real gangsters today force their new young members to actually enter homes to steal... rather than put themselves in jeopardy. While it is good to carry a powder gun with you into a situation, and aim both a powder gun and an air gun at the intruder ... I would shoot the air gun first knowing that I will soon be explaining my actions to the police and to the county prosecutor concerning taking a life for someone who wanted my flat screen TV and didn't carry a weapon. ... as if I am the criminal. Tom, unfortunately no one ... even in concealed carry school gets an education on the emotional issues and bad dreams that happen after you kill someone ... with any type of weapon. I sat down at a restaurant after Vietnam and tried to recall and tabulate every enemy I had looked down my M-16 or 1911 45Cal pistol sights and pulled the trigger. I was marking them on the back of a paper place mat as I sat alone about 11 pm at night. I got ill and quit after marking down 35 hash marks on the place mat. I never finished my tabulations. My food arrived and I paid and walked out without eating. I still have dreams today of walking up on young Vietcong ... boys and girls and a few real soldiers ... who we had shot ... many missing body parts ... and checking for maps etc. Police get a counselor after they shoot someone ...but it isn't any part of their earlier training. A homeowner would likely pull the trigger of an air gun on an intruder before a powder gun. Seasoned thieves (and there aren't many) will look into a homeowners eyes and facing jail time will run ... or walk over and take away the powder gun from an unprepared homeowner ... and shoot the homeowner with their own weapon. Many get weapons ... few get the training they need to own one. Anyway ... that shows you what my thought processes are. Please write again ... and please keep us in the loop of your air gun experiences ... so that we can help keep others air gun sharp. P.S. I was wounded 3 times ... carry a bullet to this day in my left arm ... and received 13 medals in Vietnam ... second highest in our infantry battalion (700 men) ...of the Big Red One ... the Army's first and oldest division. Phil ... it is good hearing from you ... and good luck with this next phase of your life. I am convinced that everyone has a mental or emotional disability .... for some it is a bankruptcy ... or a divorce .... or a physical handicap ... or a drug period in their lives ... or even a father or relative who won't speak to them. I believe the key is not that we have these clouds over our head... but rather how well we get up off the ground .... dust our pants off ..... and get going again. Keep your eyes in front of you .... and stop looking back.... Good luck in that effort. ... Now to answer your question. I know of no restrictions in previous felons owning an air rifle.... even the large bore 357 magnum .... 45 cal and 50 caliber air guns. Their is a distinction between them and powder guns ... because their range is measured in yards versus miles. My 357 magnum .... aimed slightly high will not make it 800 yards. I also believe unless you were still on probation with certain restrictions for that probation... that air guns might be forbidden ... but I have not run into that either. I also believe that there will likely be restrictions on air guns in the future ... much like Europe and Asia has now ... but when those restrictions come ... those of us who own full automatic and semi automatic air guns will be grandfathered. Hopefully that is the case. Meanwhile ... you will find that there is only one restriction today ... and that is that you are 18 years of age. Lastly, I would get a hunting air rifle ... versus a handgun ... which looks very much like real powder handguns these days. You would not only get the additional use of critter control ... but a softer response from police in the event you are stopped and searched in the future.... Dr. Russ

    I know you touched on this but I dont have either a 17 or 35. But i do have a 25 PCP rifle .. It lack the power of the 35 but is generates much greater power than a 177. About 50 ft/lbs. I suspect that the 25 PCP generates enough punch to deliver a lethal wound to the center mass if the target is clear and no protective gear is worn which is not the case in your demo which is totally different but with the right pellets it will punch through an inch of wood. They are both classified as small bore but the 17 is not even in the same league as the 25.. Just saying..
