    That polymer (plastic) tip is to keep the bullet/pellet flying true and prevent the hollow point from being clogged. They don’t really help with expansion. Lead is soft so manufacturers add antimony to make it harder. Soft lead at speeds over 300 fps will strip out the rifling and wobble or keyhole down range. By making the bullets/pellets harder with antimony (or by powder coating) they hold the rifling at higher velocities. Still, as pellets break the sound barrier (860 fps or so) they start to lose stability. Bullets will be more stable at higher velocities than pellets because of the design and the larger bearing area.

      Thanks Shun... as I reviewed other videos... I found top best 5 sellers... or some velocity comparisons. Eileen pellets and slugs... so hopefully I shared new info for all 4 main calibers... ignoring velocities... other than the sweet spot of about 850 fps for accuracy. Big news here is about the largest woodchuck I shot with a Hatsan that I just finished putting a regulator in...and zeroed it in for 65 yards... placing 25 cal. pellets on top of each other... only to have this big grey woodchuck appear at 85 yards ... see me... and began to hustle back to its den. I did a shrill whistle... it stopped at 92 yards... i used a 2 mil-dot holdover and hit his head. While there was no time for a camera shot... we just finished a video on it that will likely appear in 2 to 3 weeks. Dr. RUSS

      Good to hear from you Dom Younger... I hate to give a favorite pellet recommendation to anyone because each air gun has its own idiosyncrasies. My Armada has a Walther barrel in it and every barrel of every brand has some differences. I will share with you my general procedure in finding a good pellet. This method works about 80% of the time. Go to Pyramid Air and purchased 4 tins (Buy 3 and get the 4th free) of the two heaviest JSB pellets for your air gun. You will find heavier pellets, but they just don't have the consistency and I believe the consistent lube on each pellet ... like JSB has. You will often find your best pellet between these two JSB weights. Lastly, be sure to review my video on "Accuracy" ... since many don't have any instruction on shooting air guns. Please keep me in your loop for air gun experiences ... and determining the right pellet for you. Dr. Russ

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 Před 3 lety +2

      Good to hear from you Robert Biermann. There are several answers to your question ... and it is a good question in light of the recent rise in powder guns and slugs used in powder guns. First I would buy up some 35 ... 357 and 9 mm pellets before this rise crosses over the line into air gun ammo. The first 3 are all the same. Second, I would buy the 35 caliber ball bearings that several manufacturers offer ... one is Air Venturi ... for plinking etc. Then the Noslers as well as 9 mm slugs in any weight are good for hunting as long as they shoot straight in your air gun ... and you are going for head shots. Fortunately, you don't have to shoot many of those to site in your gun and use it for hunting. My friends tell me it will be two years before ammo manufacturers will catch up with rising demand. You and others will scream if this demand for powder guns crosses over the line and into air guns. Powder guns have doubled and powder ammo has increased 4 times. This demand will stay high as long as the newly elected officials continue to promise the public that they will take the guns off of the street. looked like you had several boxes of laser cast bullets on the table. Can you shoot bullets designed for smokeless powder out of air guns? And do they perform well? Laser cast is a pretty hard alloy, at least what I’ve used is hard. I’m guessing that a lead .224 projectile would not be a good choice for a magnum 22 springer due to the weight being about double of even a heavy 22 pellet? I presume that smokeless powder projectiles are a better fit for big bore air rifles as you have the volume of air to move them and reach 800-900 FPS?

    • @russelljones4132
      @russelljones4132 Před 3 lety +3

      Motorgearhead .... Smoke or smokeless projectiles are fine for air guns as long as they are not copper jacketed ... and as long as they are the right diameter. for example ... 357 magnum air rifles pretty much dont shoot 357 magnum lead bullets..... they get stuck in the barrel .... like copper jacketed bullets do. good to hear from you GG&T .... yes all ammo manufacturers .... including both powder and air gun ammo has quadrupled their prices...and powder guns have doubled.... I was watching a trend of air guns becoming cheaper ... especially with Umarex and Air Venturi bringing to market great pcp rifles with regulators included for $299 each.... and yet today.... those same air rifles are selling for $400 each ... and other air guns that were declining in price are now climbing. It is all about supply and demand. I do not own a 30 caliber air gun.... even though most powder guns come in 30 caliber (30-06 ... 300 Winchester Mag .... 308 .... 30-30 ... etc) all use a 30 caliber bullet ... only the brass case changes ... holding different amounts and types of powder. In air guns... there are only a hand full of 30 caliber choices (and there are some very special ones not available)... compared to all the other calibers available..... and if you use the formula for foot pounds of energy ... it only uses speed and bullet weight.... and with the vast number of 25 caliber pellets... which has a greater velocity than 30 calibers .... you can easily pick up some weight that equals or even surpasses the 30 caliber energy.... Now add the shortage of pellets and their costs (Ammo manufacturers say that it will take 2 years to catch up to current orders) you will find some 25 caliber choices available and often no 30 caliber choices available. Dr. Russ, did you mentioned "fogging oil" as an alternate pellet lube? If so, is there a particular brand to look for in the auto store?

    • @russjones6497
      @russjones6497 Před 3 lety +3

      Shato Parvic .... good to hear from you ...there are several products to lube your pellets.... stay away from any runny oils because we don't want those to run down the barrel and into your air gun mechanism. The 3 that I use (no brands necessary) are Fogging Oil found at auto parts stores. It is used in the off season on lawn mowers, snow blowers, wave runners etc to keep the aluminum or steel engines from corroding. The second is found in gun stores called ... Bullet Lube. Bullets used in powder rifles need lube too for consistency and smooth flight. The third is ... Chain Wax ... found at motorcycle stores ... that keep the chain lubricated without throwing a stream of oil on your clothes or passenger. All are thick... use somewhat sparingly... and after shooting ... store your air gun with the barrel down for a day or two ... just to make sure oil isn't running down into your gun's mechanism. The concept is the same as an engine.... the pistons need oil on the sides to maintain compression and to stay cool. Air Guns are not concerned about cool... but consistency is huge when it comes to accuracy. Shato ... be sure to click onto the small circular photo of me to access our library of videos ... look for the one on Accuracy ... particularly section on trigger pull.... That and Fogging Oil will improve your shooting noticeably. Please keep in touch with your air gun experiences.... helping us help everyone stay air gun sharp... Dr. Russ

      Yes Maker of Many Things ... I would ... it happens to be one of the latest air guns I have purchased.... great sale after Christmas from Bass Pro... and plan to feature it in the next 2 months... it has several improvements over generation one guns.... and that was a great gun too. 22 is a great caliber ... use the heaviest pellets possible or your groups will get wider ... especially after 40 yards... (in my experience). while it shoots all of the Crosman and Gamo pellets well ... consider ordering some heavy JSB pellets thru the internet.... Please continue to share your air gun experiences with us.... enjoy your rifle....and stay Air Gun Sharp.... Dr. Russ

      Peter ... good to hear from you again ...I stick with JSB (or Hatsan Vortex brand) for PCP rifles .... and Benjamin/Crosman for break barrels....and for large bore PCPs I look for slugs at gun shows ... but you have to know exactly what you are looking for ... for example 9 mm and 35 caliber fit 357 magnums, but 357 magnum slugs usually don't. It is also important that you spray all ammo with bullet lube, fogging oil or motorcycle chain lube to provide a uniform seal as they go down the barrel. These 3 lubes provide a thick, sticky spray and not a runny oil that could slip back down your barrel and into the air mechanisms... so store your air guns barrel down for the next day or two after using them... allowing any oil residual to drain out safely...Once you find the right pellet or slug that provides the best groups ... then stick with it... I'm more of a pellet pistol type of guy, not a rifle man!With that being said from your own experience what's the best pellets for break barrel air pistols?(hunting kind) I have a variety but lately I've been drawn more the H&N Hornet(brass tip) the Hades & the Dome heads by Norma!

    • @drsrussandpaula
      @drsrussandpaula  Před 2 lety +1

      Carlos McCutcheon ... good to hear from you .... stay away from hollow heads when hunting...Two exceptions is the Hades which is a hollow head that has been closed in... the second is a Benjamin hollow head which is very small hole in front. Hollow heads only slow your pellet down and are more form knock down power rather than penetrating killing power ... especially thru a skull of a destructive critter. Unfortunately, you have to experiment with different pellets since they are not uniform in diameter... a 177 varies between barrels... and you are trying to find a pellet that completely seals the air off behind that pellet... also consider putting a bullet lube on your pellets which helps with that sealing... but then store your air gun with the barrel down so that any oil or lead or brass shavings will drip out the front of the barrel instead of down into the mechanism... Blackswordshinobi good to hear from you again.... I believe the round balls make a great economical low price ammo against all other slugs... but no they are not the most accurate.... you want a pellet or a slug that will catch the rifling inside the barrel and get it spinning like a football towards its target to be real accurate. also put a thick oil or lube on those rounds to make sure they get a good seal going down that barrel... for velocity and accuracy.... Good to hear from you Steel Navigator ... I have only shot about 6 different pellets out of the Gamo Magnum and I can only suggest that you stick with the heaviest pellets possible ... JSB's .... and maybe H&N Grizzly's... You have a lot of power there without the ability to tune it down... so going to heavier pellets will help.
