Accuracy testing the legendary crosman premier air rifle pellets

  • A trip down memory lane, the crosman premier is still regarded by some as the single most accurate pellet in existnace, the die 2 particularly are incredibly sought after and have accounted for numerous major competition wins in the history of field target. Sadly they barely get a mention in top flight competition nowdays
i test the crosman premier super magnum pellets in some really tough conditions. how do they perform nowdays? are they still the legendary pellet they once were? many people say the die 2 prems are the most powerful pellet ever to be made, others say they are the most accurate. lets see how the latest versions run through my air arms xti50. the xti50 is a flagship field target air rifle, where the crosmans really earnt their reputation as the best pellet in the world.
im curious where they are made now, im sure if they were made in the usa the tins would say made in the usa, not built in the usa? if anyone can confirm it,that would be great.
in the uk we also got a 7.9grain version sold as the webley accupel. it seems webley now rebrand h&n pellets as the current accupels.
they do say its not wise to meet your heros, this may just be a case of that. i certainly remember the hype of the premiers as a young lad. they were super rare to find especially in the die 2, unless you had contacts in the shops to supply you.
at short range they hit hard and have huge penetration but at range they are fairly inconsistant. i pretty much failed to hit any of the long range targets with them
if anyone has some original die 2 premiers, id love to give them a try!

History - early 90's, pcp's were generally more efficient with the heavier pellet, hence bisley magnums being the pellet of choice for a while, this choice swung over to h&n baracuda (blue label) then followed by baracuda match (gold label) until the first of the boxed prems, 7.9 were the preferred weight, but some stuck with the 10.5 as they could interchange between the baracuda match and heavy prems. The heavy prems were the hardest pellets known to mankind, giving many a blister if you had a direct loader or bolt with little handle.
Usual story of the time, companies ran dies too long and the quality dropped off, leaving the door open for a newcomer, so JSB enter the scene under the air arms own label in approx 1999.
What people did notice with set up and lead types was a gun set to do say 820 with 7.9 prems, if you then stuck a AA field 8.4 in the speed would remain at 820, so a heavier pellet running as fast as a light, which in gun set up terms allowed you to turn your set up down so the action wasn't working as hard.
Along side the boxed prems, you also had the choice of the original webley mosquito, which were a customer die crosman premier . Also available was crosman accupel yellow label, very similar to the mossy and sold in tins of 500 as opposed to the proper 7.9 prems which were boxes of 1250.
We have now had over 20 years of lions share going to one jsb manufactured brand or another and for the good of the sport, would love to see some viable competition to them.
For anyone testing other brands, there is a lead conditioning cycle to observe, you will find that not all pellets shoot from clean the newer german made pellets fall into this and its the same scenario if you dont clean between for example jsb and h&n, you will not get the best out of the pellet with the other lead in there - imho of course.
The complication that is around now for some of our uk made guns is the addition of anti tamper measures, generally the guns are set to be legal with a jsb manufactured pellet, so sticking the harder german pellets in will instantly give you a lower ME, if you have the settings available to run a like for like ME then thats good, but there will always be the smartass who points out that if you put a pellet in you aren't using it may not be as you expect...
Something else to consider now is as pcp's have progressed, its now a myth to say all pcp's run higher ME with a heavier pellet. I have examples that run higher ME with lights than heavies.
Have fun with the testing 😁

Si built a bunch of BSA bitsas for us over the years, one nick still uses ,cz barreled was in the nice walnut stock now got one of young toms on, that makes(or it did when I bought it off si) max power with 7.9 accupells. Funny story with that rifle when I bought it. Si had just won the ukahft nationals with it. I bought it off him a fortnight after, flung a scope on it at mad that morning and we went straight out onto one of the double header shoots and I beat him with it 😆

@@tillysgunstocks the popular choice was lubrotechnic for lube, although lubing does have its own pitfalls. Needed to wash, then weigh thenlube. But only lube as many as you were going to use that 1 session and never days in advance as it seemed to go off as unlikely as it sounds. Freshly lubed, all good, old prelubed pellets were effectively scrap a week later. Sizing made more consistency and accuracy gains in prems in all my guns at the time.

Had some success with various Crosman pellets but they do not like to be mixed with other pellets. I would love to see you test some Daystate Rangemaster Kaiser .177 as my HW99 @10flb loves them. Super tight groups out to 30yds (my max at the moment) and very consistent. I found the Crosmans a little like the RWS Superdome and Superfield in .22. I got some good results but had consistent flyers. I would always get 2 or 3 flyers every 20 shots or so. My goto .22 pellet for my R10 and HW90 is the BSA Goldstar. I plan on trying some H&N FTT as they are a little cheaper and also the Kaiser in .22. Great vid as usual

The crosman pellets did dominate FT back in the 90's over here in the states. They had to be washed and lubed. I Always assumed the worn out dies made the pellets sold in the metal tins at walmart, etc... You have a very windy area to shoot. Sub 12 ftpds is a bitch in tricky wind like that. Maybe try early in the morning wind the wind is calm. I also only shoot sub 12 over here. Windy days like you had I would just put the gun back in the safe....wait another day. Sometimes I will set my bench rest flags out and practice reading them. I can shoot good in the wind with flags, I Enjoy the videos. Thanks for taking the time.

I used to use the OG prems in the early 00's (before lazapell and lazadome came out and JSB pellets hit the UK). I'm 99% sure the original boxed pellet were 7.9's, they were the same as accupell but apparently the newer and better dies were all premiers and when they wore out they were sold as accupell. I think most people used these, if you wanted 10+ grain pellets you went with Bisley magnums.

Thats rare among demonstrators in YT when testing for rifle accuracy but the right position really when trying to extract a scientific result from rifle accuracy. The prone position minimizes negative factors that are inevitable in the seating or standing firing positions. A stand/ bipod under the rifle further reinforces accuracy. Breathing, pulse, wind, elevation , distance, recoil, velocity, pellet weight, temparature, eye and mental status of shooter and angle also affects accuracy among others. In short, really can't wait to see an accuracy test for rifles and pellets where a rifle is fixed in a vise inside a controlled environment. This will. settle once and for all whether negative factor is on a particular rifle or pellet. Just saying😊

Here in the States Crosman .177 7.9hp and 10.5 domed have always been the go to for small game and pest control. General rule of thumb was the 7.9 for pumpers close in and the 10.5 for springers out to 35yards. I don’t think they do well over 900 fps. or at long distance but then I don’t believe at their price point they were ever intended for competition or distance. I do believe the 7.9 in the new can, I’ve heard now made in Brazil, are of better quality now but still can be found at around 7 usd for a tin of 500 count and I’ve just reordered the 10.5 in the 1250 count box for 30 usd. We’ll see if they have improved.

Those who are more serious about accuracy and consistency lean more towards the imports. JSB, H&N RWS and the like. Almost twice (sometimes more) the price but you pay for what you get. Bashing tin cans is fine but for things like HFT, target shooting or ratting where shot placement really counts, I wouldn't use them

Not these particular ones, no amount of prep will cure the poor forming of them, they are all pretty well miss shaped. When I get some originals here to test I'll go through the full prep they used to go through years ago.
It'll be interesting to run prepped Vs straight from the tin on the originals though. When I get some, I'll do that too 😉

When I started sending these pellets at FAC speeds…the accuracy I thought I once achieved is NOWHERE NEAR what many other brands have given me. Especially out past 40-50 yards. The difference between these Crosman and H&N, JSB, and FX along with as I said many others is just mind blowing. No comparison honestly. You get what you pay for. I’m not saying they are garbage but I am saying I’m not shooting them past 25 yards and only plinking…NOT HUNTING!💯😉

The older(crosman made)accupells ,despite being pretty grotty looking pellets do perform very well through most barrels. These recent premier's are nothing like the earlier versions in size, weight or build quality. They esentially look like they are using the same tooling of 20years ago. The flashing and seams are bad.
If I can get my hands on some original 90s made prems I'll do them side by side, I'll see if I can borrow a 90s ft gun too. That would be cool..

These 10.5 gr pellets perform poorly in all my pellet rifles. The 7.9gr round heads, however perform quite well. Also, of note, Crosman is now contracting from Chyna their 7.4gr pointed pellets. These pellets perform horrible in all my air rifles...shoot pattersn instead of groups. You can tell which tin is from Chyna and the other in USA by looking at the top of the tin...Chyna--blue circle around the top with words and a red white black bulls eye in the middle. The USA made pellets/tin is the traditional red over blue with a picture of the pellet in the middle. I am deeply disappointed that the bean counters at Crosman are destroying a long traditional quality products company...I have been a user of Crosman products since the 60's.
