- Watch and listen to air gun experts from American American
Airgunner TV to learn how, what, and when to hunt with an air rifle gun. Find when they say the first recorded hunt with an airgun took place. Which quarry can be hunted with airguns. Hear about the "bullets" used for a .458 Quackenbush air rifle. Where should you shoot your quarry and from what distance? Can you control pests with airguns or shoot a coyote or a deer?

Great to hear that you recognise UK airgun usage because we are restricted in firearm s that we can buy or own.
Need to turn the volume up y'all, my laptop is going deaf.
reviewing this video for about 4th time info is still good stuff in 2018 hope you can revive the show
I'm very glad to ser you on CZcams I am American airguner to taking a good experiences hunting with crosman Daisy winchester beeman aire rifles in 2023 ❤ I love hunt & have the Best aire rifles hunting days🎉to me hunting shooting with sir rifles Is an party 🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
good episode
I am am airguner hunter & shooter today hunting with my air rifle Is the Best experience in the shooters & hunter airguner ❤❤😊😊😊
I could be very wrong but I believe the .177 for feather and .22 for fur saying came at a time when air rifles made in the UK were lower powered. The .22 were below 10fpe, the .177 even less.
Being restricted to 12fpe, I don't see much of a distinction.
Hi guy's great job on putting out information that is necessary in all countries
My country in particular (Trinidad and Tobago)
We are forced to use. 177cal smooth bore for hunting or hunting and pest control, which in most cases it is not the best caliber for what we do which is hunting
In other words we don't have that choice in caliber nor do we have accurate shooting with it .
I use break barrels for small game and pcp big bore for larger game
TOP GUY'S, MICK FROM UK
A great show and you covered a multitude of sins, I really enjoyed this episode. just a couple of things I would like to comment on, the .177 for feather and .22 for fur thing was a term used pre second world war when airguns were pretty much low power by todays standards, when velocities dictated what you could kill cleanly, the higher velocity of the .177 ( back in the day would typically be around the 8 to 9 ftlb ) could be relied upon to pass through a birds feathers such as a crow and bring it down clean, where the much slower .22 whith its greater mass would struggle. Today of coarse there is no such problem as both calibres do a fine job on both fur and feather.
You mentioned on the show that there are at least 3 magazines dedicated to air guns in the uk, but in the states there is none, Well the four of you sitting talking about it could maybe get your heads around maybe starting your own mag right there in the state your sitting in, Its got to start somewhere right ? Because at the moment the american public have to rely on conflicting information on the internet about airguns and what they are about and capable of, I bet alot still think they are toys like bb guns and dont give them a second thought. start a magazine, can you imagine the audience
I think that's the #1 problem in many states. Like Ohio for example. The report I'm putting together for next month states first off that these aren't your Red Ryder BB guns anymore. It's the same sort of mentality discussed in the video. Out-dated dogma. We, as hunters, target shooters, etc of air guns must take it upon ourselves to inform our state's DNR about the realities of the situation. Besides getting individual cities to change their laws regarding air guns to better suit responsible shooters. They're right about a lot of game invading urban situations. We've got coyotes ( a big one here) that killed two of my cats, neighbor's pets, & most of the rabbits that were in my back yard. The reason I restored my Crosman 160 .22 Pellgun. I have a Hatsan Striker 1000x .22 that'll easily put down a coyote at the 10 yards or so he'd be from me back there. The right rifle & pellet for the job is right on point. Great discussion folks. I love this sort of thing.
You're right, hunter100t. As for magazines, since this video was released there is now HardAirMagazine and Airgun Hobbyist is not inserting hunting-related articles.
Awesome segment. Hopefully it will help people to understand what air rifles are capable of. Still a lot of hunters out there that won't hesitate to hunt big game with a bow yet think it's not humane to hunt the same game with a big bore air rifle when in reality it's just the opposite.
This is the other part of my argument with Ohio. I can shoot squirrels, rabbits, & wild pigs, among a few other things. But I can't shoot a turkey with an air rifle. It's head is about the size of a squirrel's. And air rifle hunting is, for the most part, about head shots. They set far too much store in shotguns, which can be messy & arrows which can also pass through. Not to mention that arrows get first dib's on deer season. I, using a gun, have to wait until it's snowy & colder than a well digger's bum. So the people running the states & cities need to learn what air rifles are really capable of.
great vid all well thought out and reasoned the guys your first class !!! the only other thing I would add is try you best to use the meat myself I eat and give meat to family friends and neighbours
PMSL at 7:54,
Proper gun safety.
I like to be with in 40 to 50 yards I am also starting to use hunting blinds as I am getting older I don't want to have to drag a deer 300 yards or further to get game on the truck
Great points guys. I go out getting my ranges in the day and at night and set up plinker markers out in the field. But I do enjoy doing ULR with my .177...Printed my first group out at 270 yards...Very cool stuff.
Right on
270 yards !! thats nuts !!
@@mohba01 Yeah mate, did it twice to make sure and shot a 7" group. Going to round it to 300 next...I've made a new Target stand but the weather overhear has been super pants! ha ha. Just a butterfly fart sends a .177 sub 12 off target by a country mile! 🤣
@@stigcarboncreative you must be very good mate ! What's your hold over for such a long distance, the pellet drop must be crazy ! I have shot .25 cal airforce condor to 200 yards but it's not very accurate at that distance!
@@mohba01 Thanks mate..just a strate shooter..Lol No pun...just pulled the data on it...Mind-bending breaking it down...So I shot a five-shot string with the pro hunter .177 10.5 grain Spread of 7.0 STD 2.2 Av 643 FPS 9.64 ft/lb give or take. so flight time was around 2.34 sec 730" AD 270 MOA Cool, I would say it would be down to whip oscillation and harmonics...I've been down this rabbit hole for a few years now...Testing the new carbon structured barrel system at the mo, with great results...Took the .22 out to 310 yards and shot my own 19 grain GMI's (old range lead love it) ha ha
there are some Big Bore Airguns that utilize helium and can deliver well over a thousand foot pounds at the muzzle of course it's shooting a much bigger and heavier projectile than what Firearms used to achieve same energy I believe it is about 80 caliber with a rather heavy projectile shooting at up to 800 feet per second there's a video on there I've pretty much a custom little air gun shop and they work out of their garage by the looks of it.
Also, an airgun gives a hunting opportunity to folks who've made mistakes in their past and have a felony on their record that isn't ex-sponged yet. And thus can't use a firearm. Have a brother who became very excited when I showed him ads for the higher-end air rifles of today. He's technically a senior citizen now and has a disability, I believe his record is now ex-sponged, however he's fixed income and can't so much afford a firearm with its associated ammunition costs. So for someone in that position, the cost cutting aspects of an air rifle is a very exciting thing!
How can I change the laws in my state (Vermont) so that I can hunt Turkeys with an airgun? Thanks!
Introduced to Jim Chapman and the existence of big bore air rifles in Predator Xtreme magazine.
I'm still curious. When Jim comes to south africa with his airguns what's the process do you go through legally? Do air cylinders need valves removed? Do you need special licenses? Love the show always look forward to hearing your thoughts on air gunning.
OLD video, new update. The state of FL has recently opened up big game airgun hunting with calibers .40 and up. There is a push to include as low as .30 cal, since the power levels are proven effective and humane. (except for the Hatsan 135 QE Breakbarrel). Good info to put out there in a video.
Mine we can only take small game. The calibre limit is a .22 at 2,000 fps. The wild life people don't get them at all.
@@SillyOmega we had a lot of people lobbying for airgun hunting. It wasnt easy.
@@feellnfroggy I'm sure they see them all as toys. But those are only plinging air guns. But the high powered ones are crazy. I believe the age limit to buy air guns in Utah is 18 or 19. Bought my self a plinging rifle. Got so interested in it that that started doing research on other uses for them so when to researching how they work and their power.
Are there hollow base bullets for .22 but pointed nose? I'm thinking if there's projectiles not shaped like badminton birdies which would be better for more long range i.e., flat side walls and pointed meplats for higher ballistic coefficients?
Captainpegs07 look for h&n piledrivers. may be what you're looking for but they are heavyweight pellets.
Try H&N Grizzly. Available in various calibers such as .177, .22, .25, and even .357
The God father is getting a little crazy.
I hope you make a special video. Hunting deer with caliber 177. Please show that the caliber of 177 is able to subvert the deer
Thats a good topick
👍👌
I have taken squirrel and birds with body shots what a 177.
BAD VOLUMN BUT A GOOD VIDEO TURN IT UP
jim can come hunt me any time!
I hope Tom reads this,,, Lewis and Clark.
Being the 21st Century! i look for the air guns to become our future guns. for all kinds of hunting and military uses. To cut down on the use of brass, copper, lead and gun powder and with bullet proof glass bullets
I want be airguner member what can I do I am airguner in México my favoite air rifle Is Daisy powerline 880. 35. 901 & pcp ❤❤❤🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I like to take my air gun while I'm archery hunting deer. Can shoot rabbit squirrel and even got a pheasant once without scaring the deer away. They are very quiet
well...
I miss the round table... :(
Me too
There'll be a trapezium table soon
Do they know about slugs? and FX? :)
This video was out WAY before the impact was out,
As of slugs you got me there.
In Zanesville Ohio.if it's over 900+ fps.its against the law to discharge.considered a firearm at that point
And yet it doesn't use any type of explosion to push the projectile so how do you call an AIRGUN a FIREARM?!!!?
Personally I think they should have looked more to Eutslers input. PCP, Springer, CO2 he is Def more of an expert than a powder burning hunter, or a expert who thinks pesting is mouse in the garage.
I will pay these guys to find a close-up camera so you can see what in the hell he is holding and showing the other guys. I love them talking about the different sizes and they haven't showed us what they are looking at.
in Canada the city I live in has a "no discharge" with city limits airgun by-laws!
if I shoot in my home iam violating that bylaw :(
our federal airgun law is worse than the UK, ours is 500fps for air rifles and air pistols.
If you read a copy of the bylaw for your town/city there will be an exceptions list that says where and under what conditions the bylaw does NOT apply. Generally if you are in door shooting in the basement would not be against the bylaw. If you get your PAL/RPAL ( Fire Arms License) you can buy and use air rifles over the 490 FPS limit.
I've read the bylaws where i live many times because i downloaded pdf's of dozens of airgun bylaws from all over Canada so i could read and compare them, and they are all the same, and the exceptions list of the bylaws i have read do not include shooting inside private homes within the city or municipal boundries...it includes gun clubs & ranges, paint ball facilities and some areas of land outside of the city limits, however, it also states that written permission from land owners in these areas outside the city limits is needed...i suggest that you take a closer look at the bylaw where you live or even better call the local bylaw enforcement office like i did and you will be shocked to learn that you are not legally allowed to shoot airguns in you private home it your homes is located within the "no discharge" area within city or municipal limits.....btw, you can only legally use the PAL rated air guns at gun ranges and wherever else a firearm is legally allowed to be discharged, as well as hunting with the required permits in specified areas...Do you think that getting a PAL allowed you to shoot your +500 fps pellet rifle in your basement?
in Canada we are also only allowed to hunt with a PISTOL that has a M.V below 500 fps...anything over that is a restricted firearm and not allowed for hunting....this is why the Crosman 1322 and 2240 are the PISTOLS that i mentioned regarding pest elimination with a PISTOL.
here in Canada, any pistol rated over 500 fps is forbidden for hunting whether you have a PAL or not.
Based on your reply, you need to actually read the firearm act and all bylaws before you get your self into legal trouble.
The by-law in my city allows the discharge of bows. and firearms in locations that would contain the projectile. A by-law would not list each individual location as that would create a very long list. You would be surprised how little is needed to create a "PRIVATE" range.
As for the by-law saying that you would have to have written permission from a land owner outside of the city limits, that would be incorrect. The by-law's authority is limited to with in the city limits. The trespass act would have more effect then the by-law in that case. Also Any City by-law is limited to "WITH-IN" the city limits and has no authority beyond that.
Where you think I mentioned pistols and hunting is beyond me? If you read my post you will see that I say and I quote " If you get your PAL/RPAL ( Fire Arms License) you can buy and use AIR RIFLES over the 490 FPS limit."
The question is: "Why?" Any firearm of the same caliber will have more power and never run out of pressure.
Lots of answers to the Why. Many don't want the hassle of a firearm, others realize that to be effective you don't need the projectile to go miles, cost of ammo, etc... More importantly why question it and enjoy the fun.
What's your name says the teacher he says it's tom gaylord teacher laughs
I took a sasquatch with my daisy rider 250 yards Avocado Lake
The God father said the police are shooting out street light and killing guards dogs with pellet guns🤣
I heard that too at 15:30 or so. As much as I want to think he is lying, my brain's BS detector doesn't seem to work properly anymore due to system overload. I wish I could tell the difference between a lie and the truth, but I think that the needle might have been broken off from being pegged too many times on the BS side.
I love how they all just shrug off his "old man BS stories" and just move on to the next guy. There is no gov agency in the USA shooting dogs or city/county property with air rifles before they serve a warrant.
Over all, a good show. I'd like to show this to the Ohio DNR next month with my report. I can shoot small game like rabbits or squirrels, raccoons & even wild pigs with air rifles. but not turkeys, for example. They have a head about the size of a squirrel's. Why the differentiation here? Entrenched dogma, of course. I really want to try & get air gun laws further defined to reflect their true capabilities.
Uniondr, We have no prohibitions about your using this video for your purpose.
Thanks Guys. This should help.
Air Rifle vs Firearm,,,,,, in my case COST. $$$$$

RIP I bought a .177 with the intent to kill squirrels and rabbits that are ravaging my yard. Shoulda bought a .22...
a .177 will do just fine. just make sure you know the gun. with a .177 I would only do head shots. I have killed many many squirrels with a .177
.177 are better to kill birds but they can easely kill a squirrel, you have to aim for the head, but with a .22 you also have to aim for the head, if your gun isn't really powerful.
.I started hunting small game with air rifles back when the mighty Beeman R-1 first came to market. I bought one of the first .20 caliber R-1's that Beeman imported. Back then, the .20 made a lot of sense, but back then, I couldn't buy Crosman Premier, Beeman FTS, or JSB Exact pellets in .177 because they weren't being made. Most of the .177 pellets on the market and all that I could get my hands on had really low ballistic coefficients (BC) and didn't make effective use of the R-1's power potential because of that. By low, I'm talking BC in the .009 to .011 range. Thankfully, I don't live in 1980 anymore and can find plenty of .177 pellets with BC from .020 to .029, which sucks compared to rifle bullets but sucks a whole lot less than a BC of .009 does. From 2005 on, a tuned .177 R-9 has been my main small-game squeeze even though I also have a similar R-9 in .20. With relatively high BC pellets, a wimpy 15 ft/lb R-9 can still thump a cottontail's noggin with 9 to 10 ft/lb of energy at 50 yards and you only need 3-4 ft/lb to drive a .177 through a rabbit's skull. The result is "sproing-flop" every time, on rabbits, squirrels, quail, and chukar partridges, all of which were legal to take with air rifles in California when I lived there. About all I use the .20 for is turkey hunting and shooting empty 12 gauge shot shells. When California made it legal to take turkey with air rifles, they set a .20 minimum on them. That's the main reason why I have a .20 R-9. Otherwise, the .177 shoots flatter enough to give me an additional 5 to 10 yards of effective game-taking range over the .20 because it shoots faster and flatter with less wind drift. It would probably suck if I didn't pay attention to the BC of the pellets I shoot and relied on pellets that shed velocity quickly due to poor BC. and therefore also shed downrange energy, since energy is squared in calculating energy while mass is not. But .177 works for me very well because basically shoot the same pellets that someone wanting to win a Field Target Competition would; pellets with BC of .020 to .029 that can deliver close to to 10 ft/lbs of energy on a target 50 yards away when shot from a rifle getting between 15-16 ft/lbs with them at the muzzle.
Heh - Gaylord.
save your $$$$ get one of the get a nice airguns then you will have no worries varmints beware
Local suburbs have outlawed air guns because they can be confused with a "real gun".
TX doesn't allow airguns for hunting, last I checked.
Texas does not allow taking of game with a air rifle. Hogs, rabbits are okay. Now they allow squire to be taken with them.
since when?!
+KC6CNN read the parks and wildlife book game can not be taken with rim fire or air rifles. Now rabbits, pigs no problem because they are not classified as game.
Texas Parks and Wildlife is a bit behind the times, IMO, as there are now air rifles that are very capable if taking deer.
+Anthony Browning I totally agree.
Hey! Why do all the air gun experts wear drab coloured shirts?!
Luck of the draw on set that day. Just a coincidence.
lol maybe
What are they supposed to wear? A Gucci sweater like a half a fruit?
Come on guys your professionals. They are pellets or pills let's not get them confused with fire arms.
