I always tell my students that knowing "HOW" to do something is great but the real knowledge is in knowing "WHY" you are doing it or why you are doing it that way. Changing a 4 link bar takes 5 minutes to learn, but the real knowledge is in knowing Why you are changing it and why you are putting it where you are.

Great video Tim, reminds me of trying to help a friend when we were drag racing bikes back in the 90's, I'd ask him questions about the run and it was like pulling teeth and the look of the Victrola dog. A data recorder just wasn't going to happen but I improvised by using tiny cassette dictation recorder in a zip lock bag under the seat suspended from the frame rails and the mic with the remote on off switch strapped to the frame behind the engine out of the wind blast, while staging I would turn the recorder on, it was eye opening to say the least. What I'd do is play the run back and with a stop watch and match the run to the time slip, from this point forward rapid progress was made mainly for a point you made, it allowed the rider to discuss the run at playback, not only did we dial the bike in but it helped the rider too.

Great advice Tim. Similar to my program when my son and I used to race. We did everything in-house and solved our own problems. We asked fellow racers questions but ultimately we did the work ourselves.
Lots of side work in my earlier years to purchase welders, lathe, milling machine, and fully equip our shop but it paid off in the long run.
    Great videos.

It's probably a given that they'd take up a pretty big interest in cars and racing, but outside of all that.. Having a strong foundation means so much to a youngster these days, having a sure footed , successful example to help guide you is an advantage that few kids today can claim! Well done Tim McAmis!

Seent lotsa comments here and on other vids sayin Tims "Brutally honest" or whatever. I dont see it as brutal. Seems folks put too much emphasis on being cordial and friendly and not offending, TO THE DETRIMENT OF ISSUE. If i paid a gentleman like Mr McAmis for his services,or anybody else for a technical service, im paying for their experience, skill, and capacity. Not for their charming rapport. Im a 20 year mechanic/electrician. I believe it is being professional to be cordial but NOT WASTE THE CUSTOMERS TIME SUGARCOATIN PROBLEMS! Time is money and no box on my work orders is designated for "hours spent figurin out sensitivity of customer". Analyze the issue, relay that to the customer, and follow up. I think we can be more efficient and savin time bullshitttun seems to be a simple fix....THANKS FOR GETTIN TO THE POINT MR McAmis!

Just a hobbyist perspective here, the key is knowledge and the willingness share it with the quest for more. If the sport is to grow and survive we need to pass on this wisdom like Tim does here on this channel. You shouldn't be signing autographs, you should be helping lift others in the sport. Been put off by too many pricks that just want to look down their collective noses at you.

3:50 4:05 The driver needs to run in a slower car for a while so they can get themselves up to speed. Run tons of laps in a wobbly 13 or 14 second car so you know what problems feel like. Skip Barber, a road racer with a racing school , said it best at the end of his " Going Faster " video from the 90's. " You will learn much more driving a slow car 20 hours a year than riding a bullet for an hour and a half. "
From watching these vids, I get the strong impression that too many PM level cars are being bought with someone that has a few $ in their pocket and thinks because they did a burn out in their disco era Corvette they are a race driver. There are " race car drivers " and there are those that " drive race cars " .
I've seen this kind of thing in road racing where someone gets a Formula Continental / Formula Atlantic because it has wings making it look like an Indy car. Then in a mixed class race, guys in Formula Ford or Club Ford are eating them up.

I always kind of liked the "checkbook" racers... they buy and buy useless junk and can only hope to get lucky on a combo... I am not much good on door slammers (yet) but rigid chassis fuel cars are pretty bare bones simple... I am learning about the chassis on these things with springs and shocks... air pressure/fuel/clutch is so much simpler :)
