    After your in depth review of this camera some months ago, I decided to get it and I’m happy I did. It does have a lot of features and modes, a rather large superset. For me, the key was finding which features and which combinations of settings are most important to me, there is no need to memorize the entire feature set. Thank you for your clarity and in depth exploration of the camera when used while traveling on a vacation. For extreme HDR situations, I use the handy auto bracket mode and post process the photos, but the in camera one works quickly and well most of the time.

    This is really a great camera for a holiday/vacation or an outing where you don't want a heavy bag. I took mine to Panama City Beach Florida last September for a week and it was fantastic. Setting the lens barrel button to zoom assist allowed me to quickly shoot the F16/F18 fly bys from nearby military bases. They come up fast and you can easily miss them. iso 100, F4 at all focal lengths was so clear and sharp. Great review Maarten!

    Retrospectively, great timing to go on that cruise! I really like this review, the camera used for what it does best, documenting within a wide zoom range. Especially great on a cruise ship with large distances. A bit less friendly for catching a nice 'mood' of the people you're traveling with, thank you for those examples.

    My wife has been shooting the RX-10 IV for about a year and it's truly a fantastic camera. We have several of her shots blown up to 16X20 and they are every bit as sharp as those taken with my D7200 and various Nikor and Sigma lenses. Very nice review.

    I am absolutely loving my new RX10 IV-SO many useful features. My one biggest complaint *was* the position of the dedicated “Movie” button on the back, due to my small-sized hands. But after watching this video, I am happy to say that I programmed the main button to start and stop movie recording...as well as programming the lens button to activate EyeAF-ingenious! Thanks for sharing, your video is very informative and the manner in which you provide the content is very relaxing. I am a Canon full frame user but see the value of the RX10IV. One of my first cameras was an Olympus C8080, an 8 megapixel bridge camera. This camera cost $1000.00 in 2004 and was considered the top bridge camera for it's time. Due to the slow focusing of the model, I sold on ebay after one year and replaced with a Canon DSLR. Considering $1000.00 in 2004 money and comparing the capability of the C8080 compared to the RX10IV, at $1600.00, it really is a very good bargain for what it offers.

    This is a very excellent review Maarten, convincing me to go ahead with the purchase of an RX10iv. It seems to have all that I need for a travel camera. The weight I think is manageable as a trade-off for having such a well-equipped camera available. I enjoy the period of discovery that comes with a new camera so I am looking forward to getting my hands on the camera hoping that it arrives in time for my holiday. I will study your video intently for clues & tips about using the camera. I will also obtain a spare battery something that I had overlooked. Thank you for your very comprehensive review which is linked nicely to the photos & film clips you have included.

    5 years later and Sony still sells this (no V on the horizon). A local camera store has a used one in very good condition at about 2/3 of new price and I will look at in a few days. It seems to do most things very well and though on the large side, not really if one considers that it would save you a camera with at least two lenses once of which would be large to get 600mm. I’m more of a hobbyist, small camera user (hiker and backpacker who does both photos and videos) but this is very tempting for the breadth it provides. Enjoyed your video!

    I own this camera and I always grab it more often than I thought I would. I have just switched from Nikon to Olympus m4/3 pro system but I still grab this camera. The closeup images this camera makes are also awesome. This camera does not get the attention it deserves in my opinion. 24 - 600 f4 Zeiss lens is amazing at 70 - 200 it is as good as my Nikon 70 - 200 f4 was or better.

I know Sony is due for the next rendition of this camera but this camera is enough for my uses and I will have a steep learning curve. Thank you for this video. I have had the RX10 IV for about one year. I love the depth of features and capabilities of the camera. However, it has been daunting to decide what settings I should use. I think I am on information overload with all of the online guidance I have watched and read about this camera (I am a bit of an information junky!) I am going to Norway and the Baltic in about one month on an Oceania cruise. Your insights have really helped me to narrow down the settings that I need to use. Good review, Maarten, and the results from this camera are convincing. With today's technology, a 1-inch sensor can turn out first-class results, and your shots prove it. I've travelled with a bridge camera like this one, and I find the size an acceptable trade-off for the amazing versatility they offer. They're even good in low light -- though on a cruise called Into the Midnight Sun, there's not that much low light to deal with ;) To me, the HDR photos came out looking a little washy, something I've found with other cameras -- but that could just be my monitor.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the kind words, they're particularly appreciated from someone who's photography experience I respect. I agree with your comments about the look of the HDR images - and I didn't want to make the adjustments in Lightroom to compensate, but that flatness (and over-crispness) can be reduced.

    Great video and very useful information! I’ve been shooting with this camera for just over a year now and continue to learn new tricks about it daily. I am wondering if you happen to have a video or know of one where travel has been done in very cold, snowy climates. I’m headed to Montana and Yellowstone in February and trying to decide if I can just take this camera or if I need to be practicing again with my Nikon D750 which is so much heavier. Just curious if you had any advice. Happy New Year!

      Sorry, as I returned the camera after the review, I have no further guidance to offer. Thanks for your kind words.
      For any camera in snowy scenes, keep your eye on the histogram and use exposure compensation to keep the brightest parts of the scene from over-exposing. You'll also find that the RAW files may offer more recoverable detail than JPG.

I've yet take a shot with the RX4 that the 700 would have done better with. A great camera and I love not lugging a rucksack full of lenses and stuff around. To answer the previous comment.. I only shoot in raw and yes it does shoot at 24fps in that mode, and for quite a few seconds too. Be careful though. Thanks for your real life review. I bought this camera a month ago...and I've taken wonderful photos with it. Sometimes (I think) I miss the bokeh full-frame produce. One thing I've noticed (cause I also own the A7II and I'm keeping my old trustful 5D MKII) is that the jpegs this camera produces are more Canon-like than the A7II. They have less contrast and saturation and colors are more natural, so I tend to increase sharpness, contrast and saturation a bit more in Lightroom even in jpegs.

Picture quality is better than one would expect. I can catch all the candid photos near and far - all the shots that may have been lost trying to change out your lens. Thanks for your review! It answered a question or two that may have been useful for my very recent trip to Alaska, with not enough knowledge of the camera I had just bought. The menu system is very complicated with minimum help, creating quite a learning curve for those coming from Canon. Overall I love the camera but find myself still in the learning mode after hard use for the past month.
    Most of my trouble was focusing, especially early on. I wound up using center focusing most of the time due to some lost shots with other focus modes, especially flexible spot. I couldn't figure out why the initial spot kept defaulting to the left side of the screen. Is there a menu setting to permanently set the initial spot to the center? I lost some bald eagle shots as a result.
    I also maxed out my ISO at 6400. While my moose shots show decent detail for the distance the moose are, there is plenty of noise, both luma and chroma.
    My biggest complaints are the aperture ring is the only way to change it, the focus modes seem to be bumped/changed into what I wasn't expecting at times where I thought I was in continuous but was confused as to how it was in MF, a mode I normally don't use.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for your kind words and comments. On mine it keeps defaulting to the right, and it's not the only touch screen camera that does that - I have yet to figure out how I'm doing that. I also have not found a setting that will reset it to the default/centre - which would be helpful even if only a power on.
      Yes, the smaller sensor will be noisy at higher ISOs, that's part of this camera's nature.

The camera seems to be great for my needs (since I like wild life photography and also want to be able to shot 4k videos) but wasn't sure about buying it now as there is an expectation that a new model will be released. As an RX10ii owner I would quickly upgrade if Sony offered the RX10iv in the original 2.8 constant F-stop configuration. The extra reach is nice, but low light shooting suffers way too much once you start zooming. The smaller overall size and weight package of the RX10ii is something I also appreciate. Maarten, thanks so much for this incisive and informative review of the Sony RX10 IV. I am an avid amateur birder, and am attracted to this camera for its 25X zoom, decent sensor, and great ergonomics (despite the impenetrably complex menu). I spend more of my time using binocs rather than looking through a camera lens, and I don't want to schlep a heavy DSLR+lens on my hikes. I take almost exclusively still photos of birds. Based on what I have read, I think that the RX10 IV might be an good fit for me. But I see that the RX10 IV model is 5 years old. Do you know if/when an RX10 V (or its equivalent) might be coming out? Are there other "bridge" cameras (not a term I like) that you recommend? I currently have an old Nikon Coolpix B700, which I quite like for birding- just as long as the birds are holding perfectly still in good light and not too far away. I have yet to capture a decent photo of a bird in flight, and that is frustrating. Given the age of the RX10 IV, I am tempted to wait for its successor unless there's another "bridge" camera you recommend. I would be grateful for your guidance, and thank you for your consideration.

      It's about your preference not mine (unless for some inexplicable reason you're trying to emulate my style) that counts. And for my judgement, it greatly depends on the situation, the story I'm trying to tell and the mood I'm trying to capture.

    I just bought this camera. I love taking pictures of wildlife, birds in particular. I am having trouble with my pictures being clear and sharp. It seems that the birds face is always out of focus and I can't get a clear/sharp shot, like your eagle photo (or other pictures I see on Instagram). In your opinion, what settings are key to have set when trying to capture clear/sharp pictures for birds/wildlife?

      I would use continuous. Try using a smaller (F8) aperture or a smaller focus point - but if you have already tried those, I'm out of ideas.

    How is the performance for the birds and wild life photography for this camera...?

    Have you used the GPS feature to sync with your phone using play memories? I have found it to be very useful when traveling. BTW, since you talk with Sony. Please. Have them bring time-lapse to this camera.

      I do, yes. It is a useful travel feature. I know, right? Why did they remove downloadable apps and not add time-lapse to the firmware? I don't understand.

    Great video, shots amazing, did you use a tripod all the time? Was it hard to get focus handheld with the lens zoomed out all the way? How did the One inch sensor perform in low light?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the kind words. I did not use a tripod. I found focus to be fast and easy regardless of the focal length. As you can see in the photos, it works quite well in low light.

    I'd love that at some point you get your hands on a Panasonic FZ2500 to review and compare to the RX10 IV.

    How would this camera compare for protrait shots from an a7iii with a Marco 90mm 2.8

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 5 lety

      I haven't had the opportunity to compare, but I would suggest that the A7II with interchangeable lenses and a full frame sensor would be the more versatile and higher quality choice.
