5:39 (end trigger) - So you can stay in "Stand by" for as long as you want and wait until the action actually happens so you capture the best moment? Can you stay in the "stand by" screen for as long as you want and it will automatically record (to the memory card) 4 seconds in the past?
For example: I want to record lightning in a storm, but I (obviously) don't know when the lightning will strike. Would I be able leave the camera in "stand by" until it happens and then click on "record" so that I get the best part?
Yes, that is exactly how End Trigger works!! Try it out first to see for yourself and get the hang of it before the actual lightning action ;)
That is a great tutorial on slow motion. I really like your videos on the RX10MK4. Thanks for taking the time to put these together. They really do help people like me that have no experience or access to mentoring. Brilliant!!
Thanks, Jason! Just got this fab camera and your tuition is super easy to understand...taking lots of red kites and dogs. Swallow will be fun and challenging when they come back to the UK in a few weeks!! 😀
Thanks Jay.You don't know how much I learn with your videos. Bye!
Great video on HFR. I just bought a RX10 4 and your description helped me figure this feature out. Thank you!
Awesome! I'm really glad the video helped you out, and thanks for the comments!
Great video! Very useful. I just got an RX10iii and this video really helped me understand HFR. Thanks!
This video is so incredibly helpful, thanks!
Very, very well done ! Thank you so much for this great work !
thanks for this video. definitely walked me through how to use the slow mo feature.
You're welcome!
This is an awesome video. Bravo!! Your really good at explaining this cam. Im. A newb to it but all ready love it!
Great video....they are really helping me understand my new RX10 1V cheers :-)
Very detailed description, good work.
Thank you!
Wow. Terrific walkthrough! Thank you.
You're very welcome, and thank you for the kind words :)
You have a gift of explaining things correctly 😂
Very clear and very helpful, thanks for posting.
You're very welcome!
I love your videos. Very explicit. Thanks a lot.
Thank you very much!
I think your description of start and end trigger is correct. If the total capture length is say 4 sec, then with half trigger, the captured video will start 2 sec before the trigger (in this case, when you pushed the movie button).
Excellent tutorial. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Ooohh. That slow mo explanation is what I exp in the zv1 too. Thanks for this explanation. Was actually looking if the sony rx10iv is a good camera.. or vs nikon p1000
You are a really good teacher.
Thank you!
Excellent video. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Thanxx a lot !!!!! Best Explanation of this function !!!
Most welcome!
Hi thanks for the great video about HFR modes, answered a lot of questions. I read the manual for the mk4 but could not really tell if the camera has any way to slow playback even more (not record slower, just play slower). I'd also like to advance the frames one at a time and maybe back and forth a few frames to find something in the recording. I wonder if you have seen any kind of functions like these.
Sir, while I recording at HFR, video showing grains(noise/black dots) on the screen
Please guide me how to get clear video
Good footage, tnx!
Hello!
Thanks for the tutorial it was very useful for me. I have set up the back focus button which I use on my Nikon camera.
I am wondering, when using the rear focus button, how can I set the focus release priority?
Specifically, I would like to have the release only occur when the camera has found focus when using the back focus button.
I just got this camera. How do I access all your videos from start to finish?
How do I play all your videos in order from beginning to end?
So it definitely is able to autofocus in Slo-mo (HFR)?
thank you, very helpful :)
Thank you Jay for Sharing
Thanks for the c comments!
Magnífica parabens pelo trabalho. Grande abraço Brasil
Can you please make a lowlight settings video?
I Have to record rock blasting video in mines as i purchase the same camera for slow motion. so first of all thanx for this video. in what ways I can improve the quality of 960 FPS. can i set the maximum zoom before i record the HFR video.
Thank you for your help
Happy to help!
I wonder if it records sound at 1080 240fps?
Thank you.
if you put 60p 50M that have to be the maximun slow motion cos your final file can be down to 30p so you will have 2000fps .. im right or im wrong???
Well done!
Thanks ;)
What about shooting video on wildlife, like birds that may need recording for over one minute in flight. If it's only 4 sec with 240fps, how should I record?
Hi, great video! I often use the HFR mode for videos of butterflies or birds at full zoom (usually when they take off). It is a real shame as the subject often becomes out of focus during the movie. This is because the subject does not move in the same plane, but moves a little bit forward or backward and becomes blurry. Simply put, continuous focus stops working as soon as recording starts. Thanks!
Yes that is correct. HFR mode does not track focus and you are limited to the one plane for each recording.
Hi Jay. Great HFR-tutorial! I just bought one and I wonder what the best exact settings I can use for slowmotion LIGHTNING movies. What settings do you recomment for BEST quality? I think 7 seconds of recording is best, because the 4 second recording is too short (less chance to capture a lightning bold). Thank you very much in advance!
try end trigger. you have 4 seconds after you see a nice bolt to hit record and capture it
Great tutorial!! Got a question. Do I have to set my shutter speed at all? I am trying to capture a very fast moving car. I want to avoid motion blur and maybe grab a still frame from the video. Thank you
The camera will automatically set it to the same frame rate that you are shooting at, but yes you can make it faster if you want and have good enough light. If the light is not great, then the ISO will go up in order to give you a faster shutter speed.
Hi Jay.. got this GREAT camera about a week ago and am thrilled with its capabilities. However, I have scoured CZcams to see if I can find an answer to this one question about HFR and came up empty. I was out in my back yard and was trying to do a 240 HFR of leaves falling. I can focus on a falling leaf but as it is falling, the camera will not auto focus to keep the leaf sharp as it is falling 50' while I am standing under it. I have clear sky and only the leaf falling in the frame. Any special settings to keep the leaf in focus as it is falling at 240 HFR?
Hello, In HFR Mode the auto focus does not track the subject. The focus stays where you had it when the video starts recording as far as I am aware and based on my testing. The only way to track a subject like that during video is to use the regular video recording modes... Even then, tracking a falling leaf would be pretty difficult for the camera I'm thinking do to the small size relative to the scene. It should be able to do it though...
Thanks Jay.. what you wanna bet that the RS10v will have it?
Thank you Jay nice explanation.hpw about 120fps in movie mode.does it buffer like this.or not I hope I get a reply from you.thank you
High there! No the 120p video record mode does not buffer like these high frame rate modes. 120p records like normal 24p, 30p, and 60p for example...
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Jay, you mentioned the Rear Trigger Half records 1/2 the time...so, 2 seconds if the previous total was 4 sec. Do you think that maybe they were trying to suggest that HALF the buffer was before the triggering, and the remainder is recorded AFTER the trigger...so, half and half? (before and after trigger?) Love your videos...they're awesome!
Once the camera is in buffering mode it's basically recording. The triggers influence when the data that is being buffered will be collected in reference to the shutter press. Yes End Trigger Half will result in half the time recording total time which in your case is about 2 seconds based on the use manual. I honestly forgot that End Trigger Half only recorded half the time, I thought it split the difference before and after the shutter press, but still recorded about the same time. Sorry about that ;) Jay
Thanks
I don’t see the HFR exposure mode as an option to choose from for the “function” mode. What am I doing wrong?
It's one of the modes on the dial on top of the camera? You need to change the actual dial to HFR...
hi , just ask if this camera can do movie shooting and after that , can get picture from the movie
Yes you can, the feature is called Photo Capture: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001593191.html?search=photo%20capture
Using end trigger it seems that it is very slow to empty buffer to memory card. Is time duration for emptying buffer the same as playback time?
It appears to be about the same, but also depends on the write speed of the memory card.
I am on the exact same record settings as you and I can only see 50p 50m & 25p 50m. yours is showing 60p 50m--30p 50m & 24 50m. yet the same camera?
Your camera is a PAL default set camera which means the frame rates are for the "European Standard" You need to change it to the North American Standard which is NTSC: MENU → (Setup) → [NTSC/PAL Selector] → [Enter]
Hi nice video - is there any time limit to the stand by buffering before using end trigger? Will the sensor get hot?
thanks
Hi and thank you :) I would imagine yes, but I have not run into this issue myself. It's certainly going to take a while before it overheats if it does at all.
Thanks for the fast response :). I am taking photos of herons fishing so it may be 10 minutes before any activity - is that sort of time ok?
@@derekskoyles9411 I think you will be totally fine. The camera will warn you it is getting hot and then shut off worst case, so don't worry about it getting damaged. I really don't think it will be an issue. I was buffering on the much smaller RX100 series camera for several minutes and that camera did not overheat from the buffering. The RX10 IV takes way longer to get hot compared the pocketable rx100 series...
@@Jason_Hermann Great just what I wanted to hear - thanks
I am new to my sony camera and the video looks really grainy. Yours looks a lot clearer than mine. Did you edit the video for noise or is it in the camera settings?
I probably had better light. the brighter the lighting the lower the ISO needs to be for the high frame rate shooting.
@@Jason_Hermann thanks. I think I am going to play with the manual settings now that I have found them. This camera is completely different/confusing than my old ones. I need to spend some time learning it.
Jay (dumb question alert!) What if I wanted to record in slow motion a trout jumping out of the water, but who knows when he will jump? If I leave the camera rolling and I am using the end trigger mode will the camera continually overwrite, or store only the last 4 seconds once the record button is hit, or do I have to cheerlead the trout into quickly jumping in fear of running out of stored time?
Have you figured it out? I have the same question haha
if you try it you will see it continually overwrites (try recording a watch with a second hand)
metering mode ????
What SD card is the best for 4k video?
Anything that is class 10 or above should work. The faster the more you are going to pay though. Here are some recommended SD Cards for 4k video: bhpho.to/2ED4bvE
Hi Jason, I set my RX10 as per your suggested settings. My question please: can you only record short sessions of HFR?
Thanks Andrew
Yes HFR is limited to only a few seconds on this camera... 120p you can record for longer though and still get some good slow motion...
@@Jason_Hermann many thanks to you. I thought that was the case but thought I’d just check with an expert.
I say again, great tutorials by yourself on the RX. You explain things in away that’s easy to follow especially for idiots like me. 🤣
@@Jason_Hermann sorry to bother you further….but would those setting work ok for HFR indoors? Thanks Andrew
@@andrewnewby1918 No bother Andrew ;) HFR will work in any setting, but because the camera is recording so many frames per second, you really want the lighting to be very good. The brighter the better pretty much, or else the ISO on the camera will be really high resulting in very noisy/ grainy footage... All the best, Jay
@@Jason_Hermann mate, you’re a star. Many thanks to you 😊👏
Does it really record 960fps or is this somehow interpolated? Asking because I used to shoot in 1000 fps with a massive high speed cam in a lab. So its pretty impressive to see that even "customer" grade cams can record in that framerate.
Yes, it really does! The quality at 960fps is not that good though ;) You really have to have awesome light to keep the ISO down when using this mode!!
Im taking 120 but do not see the slow motion in the display, how do i see that ?
120p is not high frame rate mode. You can slow 120p down in post processing software to turn it into slow-motion, but it will playback at normal speed on the camera. HFR is 240, 480, or 960 frames per second and will play back in slow-mo on the camera.
I really like the 240 frames slow motion but can i get that in post from 120 P , ?
Perhaps Sony could add a “Start/End Trigger Confusion” button to make it a little more complicated.
End Trigger is a great idea, but the price tag on this camera is just too high.

Thank you!
Excellent job, Jay... and very sexy voice.
