  • Is the Sony RX10iv the best hiking camera you can buy? It might be a few years old now, but the Sony RX10iv is probably still the hiking camera to beat. Watch the video for my thoughts after owning the camera for a few years.

      I took my RX100 on a recent trip to Greece, as it's much smaller and lighter, with the same size sensor and still has a reasonable zoom. However it doesn't have the usability of a full-size camera with buttons and dials. I ended up using the RX100 more or less as a point and shoot, so would have been better off with just my phone really. The RX10 is a hefty beast for sure, but it's the kind of cam that makes you stop and really think about the shot, the lighting, angles, timing etc. It's also reasonably rugged and shrugs off the odd splash. I'd say the main thing is it's well-made and will last many years, so it's worth learning all the (amazing) features.

    Hi and thank you for your insight.
    I started my wildlife and scenic photography career over 43 years ago, and have been retired for the last 5 or so years. I worked around the world but call NZ home, which is where I do most of my hiking (we call it 'tramping' over here). One of the attractions of NZ is its varied topography: everything from long beaches and sand dunes, through rain forest, to deserts and volcanoes, to high alps. As such, taking decent images of my tramps was important to me, and I would inevitably carry up to 3 cameras with me: a tough camera like the Olympus TG-5 or the Nikon 1AW1 (with its 1" sensor) to use when the environment would be too hostile for normal photography; and two DSLRs - one with a wide minor telephoto (like EF-S 15-85 for APS-C, or the EF 24-105 for FF), and something like the EF 70-300 on either type of body for wildlife. I am pretty fit, so had no issues with carrying these - usually in well-padded holsters. Still as time has gone on, and I have had a couple of injuries, being able to go lighter and in a more compact form became more pressing, so I looked at bridge cameras.
    For a while I toyed with the Canon PS SH50 and 60HS cameras, with a zoom range from 21-1360mm equivalent. However, I was frustrated by the limitations of the tiny 1 2/3" sensors. I wanted something bigger for the low light work and resolution.
    I should say at this point that much depends on what one is going to shoot and produce. I love shooting scenery and wildlife, which in NZ mostly means birds, which can be a challenge for birds in deep bush or soaring over mountains so one needs low light performance, fast focus, a long reach and good tracking. The demands for large, detailed, high-resolution Fine Art prints for sale are significantly higher than those for posting to social media or digital display. When I retired I had pretty much decided to go for digital display as my default output, so on multi-day hikes I didn't need the APS-C and FF sensors, with their associated bulk and weight .
    When I came across the Sony RX10MkIV I was impressed by the build ( it claims to be environmentally sealed as much as any camera with an extending lens), the excellent zoom range of the Zeiss optics, BSI/Stacked sensor and image stabilization. It has a 315 point phase detect focus system and eye tracking. I am a stills-only shooter, so video features were not significant to me. While all of those were great, I found the Sony menus to be a nightmare after shooting Fuji, Canon, Olympus and Nikon. I found the manual to be pretty horrific too, but I purchased a third-party book and devoured that to set up the buttons and custom menus so I don't have to go into the main menu system much at all.
    The 20MP 1" Backside Illuminated sensor is competent, with a fast throughput and good size buffer. You need that because in high speed continuous shooting it hammers out stills at 24 fps - which may not be too exciting in terms of the latest generation of Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras (MILCs), but in 2017 that was almost unheard of! It still holds its own against its bridge camera peers today and is still (IMHO) the best in class.
    The EVF and LCD are both excellent, although I would prefer one that hinged side to side as well as the current up and down (which does work well). The focal range of 24-600mm equivalent is massive but there are cameras out there that go up to 2000 or even 3000mm - looking at Nikon Coolpix P1000 here. However, those cameras use a much smaller sensor, and frankly shooting with lenses of that focal length is very challenging hand-held - unless one wants to lug a tripod on the trail too! I might add that the image stabilization in this unit is excellent and I have no issues hand-hold shooting at maximum focal lengths.
    The RX-10IV does have a trick up its sleeve however. If you want to double the focal length there is a feature called Clear Image Zoom, buried in the menus under Camera Settings 1, Zoom Setting. Essentially, it uses some very clever algorithms to interpolate pixels rather than just magnify it to digitally zoom to up to 1200mm equivalent. The result is a near flawless expansion. There is an another alternative to get the same result. Selecting a lower Image Size in the menus frees pixels across the sensor to do the interpolation and thus create the potential for an effective doubling of the FL. Now, my preference is to shoot RAW, which does not support Clear Image Zoom, so I found a simple way of switching between the two for those occasions when I need it.
    I set up the Function Menu to include a setting to select CIZ, and another to select file format. I leave the setting to CIZ but if I want to switch back and forth, I just set the file format to RAW+JPG for 24-600mm, and l select Extra Fine format and the camera automatically goes to Clear Image Zoom mode of 24-1200mm. To switch back again, I just return to RAW+JPG mode.
    This camera is brilliant for what it is intended to do: namely be that one camera does it all solution. I can produce great images for digital display and great prints up to about A2 size - I may be able to do better but have not tried that.

    I have had this camera since the first year it was released. As an all round camera, it is hard to beat. Like Kev, I do a lot of hiking, and was tied of carrying so much weight, with my previous camera and lenes. I agree with his opinion about low light performance of this camera. It will do it, but nowhere as good as a crop or full frame camera. I do a lot of wildlife shooting, and this is where the rx10 shines. Great range, sharpness, and focussing. You always have the right lens on. The weather sealing is excellent as well.

    • @TheWalkingKev
      @TheWalkingKev  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely Tim, you sacrifice the ultimate low light performance to always have the 'right' lens on, and the sensor stays clean as no lenses to switch. Weather sealing does seem decent, I've had it out in some dodgy weather.
      Because it's so good for wildlife and general stuff I often take a full frame camera out with a small prime on it for landscapes.

      RX much higher level than FZ:
      Longer Zoom Range
      Sharper images
      Wider range of expanded ISO
      Wider aperture: 2.4
      Higher fps

    I have this camera and it is brilliant! Low light it isn't as good as a full frame 35 mm DSLR or Mirrorless but bad light doesn't do larger image formats much justice either . Decent light improves most scenes and good light is sometimes the only way to compare the difference between a good pair of binoculars and a less quality pair . All optical instruments require decent light to perform to their best in lifing camera lenses . In photography or digital photography good light improves sharpness , contrast and colour rendering . I agree with most of what you are saying about the the Sony RX10 4 and wouldn't be without it ! DXO photolab 3 Elite or newer is brilliant with the Sony RX10 4. Some other software doesn't do the Carl Zeiss lens justice . Some other software leaves problems with the edge of frame not being sharp and even stretches or distorts the periphery/edge of the image . When I transfer images from my RX10 4, I use DXO photolab 3 Elite first for lens corrections/noise reduction and if I need to use Lightroom I transfer in , turning off Lightrooms lens corrections as that aspect isn't as good as the DXO version as above . A CZcamsr called Robin Whalley found the sharpness issue and did a video 3 yrs ago about selling camera's due to sharpness issues only to find out it was the software ! It in particular affected the Sony RX10 he had at the time . I also have a Canon Eos R, Canon RF24 to 105mm F4 and a Canon RF 800mm F11 . The Canon RF800mm F11 requires a decent level of light also , working within your equipments capabilities and knowing the limitations will enable you to get the best results . I do mainly wildlife photography but also occasionally shoot landscapes . Both my cameras can produce very good results under good light conditions . My favourite is the Sony RX10 4, you won't miss anything changing lenses . You can shoot silent shutter for wildlife and if filming you can turn off the aperture click so your microphone won't pick it up when changing f stop ! Did you know the RX10 4 has a leaf shutter like on some medium format camera lenses (Hasselblad and Bronica for example) . When you have a leaf shutter it allows flash synchronization throughout all shutter speeds ! Enjoy your Sony RX10 4 , I know over time it will reveal all sorts of extra capabilities that you may not have realised it had , I still do . Best wishes, Richard.

      Cheers Richard for sharing. I love the RX10 for it's do-anything-well flexibility. In particular autofocus is such a luxury for me as before I used solely manual focus, largely vintage lenses on a Sony A6000 and Sony A7Rii and A7ii. I did a lot of wildlife shooting with an old Canon FD 500mm f4.5L which was capable of stunning results.
      It's a great camera as if you're going for a hike and you don't know what to expect, the Sony RX10iv will capture pretty much anything.

    Great presentation of the merits of this camera. Always wanted one of these. I had a Lumix FZ1000, which is 1" sensor as well, not as sharp and not as much range, but much less expensive and still very fast operating and reliable. Each camera has its strengths, and the 1" sensor platforms are truly jack of all trades, with the Sony RX10 having an exceptional lens.
    I've tried to replicate the experience of an all-in-one by pairing a Tamron 18-300mm ( 27-450mm equivalent) with a Fujifilm APS-C body (X-E3). The Tamron's performance is as good as it can get for a zoom of this range on a crop sensor. And that is both good and bad. The larger the sensor, increasingly more compromises need to be made to keep a superzoom compact and light. Having tried a number of zooms from small sensor Lumix FZ200/300 and Fz1000 I can say that these smaller sensor cameras can hold their own against the Tamron or exceed it, even with less megapixels. Recently I picked up an FZ300 again, and was surprised the quality I could eek out of it now that I have more experience.
    The main advantages of the Tamron, is that it is has manual zoom action, which allows for fast focal length adjustments. When I use this lens, it's typically the only lens I'll bring with me, and I embrace all its strengths and weaknesses. So in a lot of ways, its a lot like using a bridge camera. This lens is also available for Sony cameras, so this could be an option for those looking to get an RX-like experience with some flexibility on the body. Considering that 5 years later the RX10IV still fetch high-prices, it might be an option. I'd also recommend the Lumix FZ1000 with the Mark II model having similar quality but just better overall performance. Both are a fraction of the cost of the RX10. And btw, that 1" sensor is actually made by Sony (just not quite as good as the one in the RX10). For those that want ridiculous range with mostly daytime shooting, check out the Nikon P950.
    On the flipside, I'm also enjoying limiting myself to using 1 or 2 fixed focal length manual lenses (a 50mm F1.1 and a 135mm F2 on APSC), with fast/bright aperture and work within the range of possibilities that allows.

    • @TheWalkingKev
      @TheWalkingKev  Před rokem

      Thanks for the kind words and comments. I agree that a 1 inch sensor can really compete with APS-C in the right light and that it's hard to get a zoom that matches the superzoom bridge cameras, but it sounds as if the Tamron is a solid option.
      I only use manual focus vintage lenses with my full frame A7RII which is a completely different experience, especially just shooting with prime lenses.
      The RX10 still fetches crazy prices, I've often looked at the Lumix for my daughter...

If I need to go light, I won’t hesitate to leave the big cameras at home. Yes, the low light performance isn’t as good, but with AI programmes such as DXO Raw, that’s mostly recoverable. Somehow I got wind of this Sony all-in-one and went for it. Initially I was completely turned off by the size. First seeing it totally surprised me, (way too big I thought), and I immediately started looking at every other camera brand, (at B&H), but eventually made my way back to the Sony keiosk and bought it. So glad I did. There were several others on my ship that also had just bought this camera specifically for the trip. I only wish I had had more time to investigate all of it's features.. it's packed. It really does it all and it take some great shots. I especially loved the highspeed burst mode. Thank you for the recent update to this camera. I miss taking photos with a real camera with tactile buttons over any of the latest cellphones with "the best" image quality which is really just incredible algorithms on such small sensors and lenses. My last camera was the A6600 and the 18-105mm. The fast and accurate auto focus was the best feature to me which is why I want to stay with Sony.
    Like most, I was hoping for the Mark V to come out but it looks like it never will as of 2023 and I don't want another mirrorless camera with expensive lenses. So it's good to see a recent review on this camera and that it's still a very viable camera as of 2023.

    Thanks for the video, it reinforced many of the reasons I purchased this (new) a couple of years ago. Now retired, with Covid more behind us than not, we are travelling more and I wanted something with a better zoom than my Sony RX100M3. But when we travel, we don’t check bags - even before the recent travel horror stories! With a similar menu setup that I was used to plus great zoom, reasonable low light capability plus things like zebra and bracketing it does everything I need. Travel normally involves a month at a time - 2500-5000 pictures and then taking the best 10-15% and putting in a memory travel book (LR and Blurb). The results are all we could ask for!! Would love a bigger sensor but not willing to travel with multiple lenses given our travel style. The catalyst to buy this was a safari in Tanzania. Awesome for that with the zoom. Have never regretted buying this. For less rigorous hikes etc, this fits nicely into a “small” sling bag with a coat, batteries, cards and a water bottle. Your video reminded me that IMO this is the only option out there today that mixes size and capability for my needs. Hoping Sony does add a MV, maybe with built in ND filter like the RX100M3, but I have added some magnetic filters that I will trying out in the spring. Cheers.

    I love my RX10 lV Kev and particularly like the optical zoom capability. My one gripe, and it's not exclusive to the RX10, is the juddering when panning. It is even present in your lifeboat station clip at the start of your film. I've tried all the tricks, ultra slow pan and various settings but decided, in the end, that panning is almost impossible with smoothness and shy away from that type of filming now. I have found a solution with my GoPros that involves careful configuration and turning many features, like Hypersmooth and linear mode, off. Of course, GoPros are pants when it comes to zoom. They do different tasks and my GoPro is fabulous for mounting on my aeroplane and capturing the Solent and New Forest from 2000 feet, whereas the RX10 is great at bringing animal features or distant detail into sharp focus. I have to admit to even using the RX10 as an excellent telescope on my walks and often use it to identify distant aeroplanes at 30,000 feet 😎. How do you address / adjust the stuttering pan issue? Great film, thanks.

    Hello there. First of all, great video and I am happy for having found your channel. I would like to ask you a question because it is what I am doing with my oldie SONY DSC HX400V, I have a little power bank that I bring with me to stop worring about battery life, what I mean is, I use my oldie Sony connected all the time with my powerbank through a USB cable and I keep shooting and shoting without changing battery or whatsoever, it works great in this way and, the power bank takes until one week to recharge, that means that I can be shootting pictures for one week using the electricity offered from my little powerbank connected through a USB Micro to the camera! having said that, hdoes this Sony have the option to be connected to a charger directly from the wall to charge the battery or in my case, to charge the camera through the USB port with a powerbank! This is very important for me because I just want to have only one battery, I need no more than one, so, being able to feed my Sony all the time, is a priority to me! If you understood what I meant, I beg you to give me an answer if you can! I send you many greetings from Germany! Keep it up! Alfredo ps. It has surprised me to know that my oldy has GPS, this one, no, but, nothing too important!

    • @TheWalkingKev
      @TheWalkingKev  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I think you can charge via USB as the external battery charger for this camera is an extra. So you should be able to plug a battery bank in to charge it. I never have though as I had loads of batteries for it.

      @@TheWalkingKev well, you have learned something from me and that is nice. I have been using my Tablet OUKITEL RT7 TITAN as my power generator for my old Sony, it has a very big battery capacity of more than 32 000 mAp and shooting more than 2 weeks connected direct to the tablet without charging anything any more for so long, also, the same using my Tank 3 phone from Unihertz with 23000 mA of capacity, however both of them are too heavy to transport and that is why I bought a little power bank very light in weight which as I said, let me shoot pictures for at least 1 week without worries at all. I only use one battery though, I need nothing more than 1 battery, please, try to test if it is possible to do the same with the SONY VI and inform back, thank you so much for your great videos and greetings from Germany. Some very nice shots. But ugh on the size and weight for hiking - 2.4 lbs? Holy crap. If you don't need 600mm and don't want to lug something that huge try the Sony RX100 VII. It's soooo much smaller and lighter, still has a 1" sensor and f2.8 at 24mm. It a has decent zoom at 200mm. I personally don't really see the need for 600 on most hikes because the wildlife I see on trail is either comfortable with humans and hangs relatively close or is non-existent because there are too many people (i.e., at nearly every National Park).

    I sold my Nikon D810 and 2 fixed f2.8 24-70 & 70-200 lenses to buy this RX10IV. Unfortunatley once youve had gear like that, you cant go back. The RX10 was never sharp compared to my old gear & ISO 400 plus was unusable so the hype on the sensor of this camera seems false to me. However, yes, great having a camera where you dont need to change lenses, I hate it. I now sold my RX10 & gone back to a Sony A7RV & 24-70 & 70-200 GM II lenses.

      I've used this alongside an A72 and A7R2 and it seemed solid enough for me in terms of sharpness and ISO performance as long as you're being realistic given the much smaller sensor.
      I've since sold my RX10 in favour of the tiny RXO 2 and a A7CII because I'm doing a lot more video these days and not so much random wildlife photography.

      @@TheWalkingKev Yes, that’s something I never knew. The f values are completely different on fixed lens cameras to SLR lenses. So, if you took a close-up picture at f2.8 with the RX10 then compare that to an SLR f2.8 pic the DOF is completely different. f2.8 on the RX10 is probably the equivalent of say f9 DOF on an SLR. So, you get the "speed" of f2.8 but not the DOF equivalent.
