I always use my “good stuff,” because, what’s the point of having them? My everyday palette is mostly M Graham with the rest being 50/50 Dan Smith and Mission Gold. It’s my rock-on palette because each and every tube paint is hand selected by moi, is in a well style palette instead of tiny half-pans, and totally fits my needs. I do tend to reach for my Bee paper over my Arches though, because I only have two sheets left and it’s feeling kinds precious.

    • @msellenandrea
      @msellenandrea Před 4 lety +11

I only use the good stuff too, while the less good stuff is waiting around for when they are more suited for something! I could never buy a palette and not even try it, that just sounds like torture xD

I'm the same!! I love using my expensive art supplies...they definitely bring me more joy! I also tend to use Bee paper, so I don't waste my precious Arches for practicing. Especially since I feel like they are price gouging for Arches on Amazon this month...And also so sad I'm on my last pack of Bee paper, and I can't find the 100% cotton anywhere now?!?

I love that you are using your expensive supplies - you deserve to! :D Honestly, it broke my heart a little to hear that you save them/don't use them bc you're afraid you're not "ready" or "talented enough" for them yet. To me, as a beginner, who loves your work, it makes me think, "oh no, I must have no business using supplies like that, then!" I struggle with this feeling a lot, especially when artist level supplies can be expensive.
I reassure myself by asking, "Will I enjoy this $10 tube of Daniel Smith $10's worth?" The answer is always Heck Yes! Why not use it up? The worst that happens is you buy enough tube. I loved your video from a few days ago when you made a declaration that at this stage in your art journey you no longer want to use student-level supplies that frustrate you. Keep that mindset every day! You deserve to have fun and love your supplies.
No more saving them, ok? Otherwise, what did you buy them for, girlie!

  • @ThatLazyStray

This is actually really surprising! A lot of your most expensive supplies are the same as mine, especially the schminche set and the escoda and silver black velvet brushes (and im currently using the etchr sketchbooks). In opposition however, these are my most used art supplies despite me probably being at a lower skill level than you. Using these supplies feel great, like they don't fight against me when i'm using them and allow me to focus just on the art.

I have several different expensive palettes, and all I really do is the watercolor equivalent of doodle. I don’t hav egrets aspirations, I just love playing with color, it’s soothing. So that makes it worth it to me. Why buy something nice and not use it? Or not buy things because you aren’t “worthy” of them. They were made to be used and enjoyed, so do it! Dooooooo iiiiiiiit! LoL

@@mushroomrisotto2556 Use them! As someone who has used a few different brands of artist watercolour now (I'm still trying to get my hands on some mission gold), schmincke has turned to out to be my favourite so far! They have this beautiful soft, almost velvety texture to them when dry that i absolutely adore. That aside, the majority of us do not art for the sake of a job, we do it for fun! And nice supplies can definitely make an experience 1000% more fun. Crack them out and have a play! i promise you you won't regret it

@@allthecolorsinmyhead I agree completely! I'm just now dipping my toes into the world of colour but nothing feels better than seeing that bright pop of colour from Daniel smith, or the luminosity of sennelier, or the soft velvet from schmincke. I don't think you need to do anything special or have a theme in order to make your content interesting for us, because it's nice to just see whatever you're interested in drawing at the moment. Yay it’s really fun to see you playing with the expensive supplies even though it didn’t go well at first! Love your attitude towards the mistakes as well, the mindset to keep pushing and evaluating is super inspiring. I’m so happy that the session broke the ice for you, and that you feel more comfortable using them.
My first Schmincke experience was a split-complementary 12 pan set curated by an artist, sold on the WetPaint site. WetPaint was doing an annual, limited-edition, custom artist-curated set for a few years, though I don’t remember if they will continue them. Anyways, that set is one of my best friends, and I believe it is all transparent paints. Since 12-pan sets usually have enough room to add two more pans, I also added two individual pans that I thought would be useful. It always gives me such a happy feeling when I see other people enjoying Schmincke! WetPaint still has the commentaries on the various sets in their blog section, if anyone wants ideas for colors they might want to try. 💖

I work with Schminke paints mainly, and I love them, but I didn’t buy a set of them, either so. I bought them all one by one so I don’t know what their sets are like. But the paints themselves, well, I think they rewet very very well, across the entire range with only a couple of exceptions (I recently went through the dot card of the full range and it ways such an eye opener) .. so. Hang on. I don’t even know where I was going with this. Maybe to start off it was a sense of I’m German and I want to use German paints, but finished off with .. I love these, for ease of use and selection, and even though this brand doesn’t have specialty colours the likes of say, Daniel Smith, I love the feel of them. Anyhow. Enough gushing about Schminke paints. 😂

Also, skip their Burnt Sienna! They are overpriced if you buy them in the USA, you really have to buy them over seas. I bought a Limited Edition 12 half pan set with a gorgeous metal tin for $44, at Jackson's Art Supplies in the UK. One of my favorite purchases ever!! The only palette I can think of is the tiny kuretake paints. I think it was a row of a deep, desaturated green, red, blue, etc. That would be really cool to play with!

I was looking at this set two weeks ago, as a way of treating myself. but indeed as I looked at the paints in the set and what pigments they actually were (by watching a Denise swatching video), I felt like I wanted to switch out at least half of them or so! Indeed also the yellow ochre because it's more opaque than other brands. So i decided I would start with a Winsor & Newton 12 pan set in a 24 pan tin. This way I can add the colors I want :)

Ahhh It looks amazing! This series is so inspiring. I got the Mijello Mission Gold 24 set and I am super afraid to use it because it is the most I have ever spent on watercolors. My biggest issue with expensive art supplies is I act like I'm wasting them if I fail on a drawing (so there is already tension from the start haha) I need to teach myself that I'm not wasting them because if I don't use them I won't learn how to properly use them.

I never usedthis sketchbook, but from my experience cotton paper tends to dry a bit slower. So the bleeding might be due to the paper not being dry enough and this is why the paint feathers into that area. I liked the video tho! I keep trying to like my schmincke paints, but for some reason I just don't bond with it! Could be that, like you said, it's because I got a pre curated set!

For some reason, I've found that the yellow ochres from European brands like Schminke and Sennelier and even Windsor & Newton are more opaque, while Daniel Smith (and I think Da Vinci) yellow ochres and similar shades are more transparent. It somewhat depends on if they're PY42 or PY43 as well. I think the pigment mined in places in Europe are just... more opaque? Also, I'm glad I only tried a sample pack of the Fabriano Artistico paper. Even though it's very high quality watercolor paper, I found that it buckled a lot more than Arches cold press when I am laying down the base washes, which really drove me crazy no matter how much I taped it down or even pre-stretched it. I avoided the Perfect Sketchbook limited edition because of that paper. I see TONS of great reviews about it but maybe other people just don't lay down as much water at a time as I do?

I don't really use the good stuff... presents/gifts and things i bought are just sitting in my drawer, waiting for me to "git gud", make progress with my art so they don't fall to waste when i make a piece i don't like :'D my favorite art supplies are like mid to slightly higher-tier paints and hand sewn sketchbook made of lower tier paper that function as scrap sketchbook that allows me to paint/draw into it without the fear of wasting good supplies... it also works as a challenge to make it work with the better paints (As paper tends to be more immportant in making it work) so when i do get to using the good stuff, it will be easier :D as the saying goes... the more i sweat in here, the less i bleed out there

Personally I find the schmincke watercolours to be incredibly muted and a bit dull? I can understand if that’s the style one likes the look of but I definitely don’t see why the palette is so expensive outside of Europe. My white nights and Dan Smith palettes are less expensive and I find myself reaching for those more because the colours in them make me happy. Schmincke and W&M just don’t cut it for me personally.

I still don't understand why people buy these ready made sets. If I was wanting to give Schmincke a go, I'd buy an empty palette tin, research out the best colours to put in it (starting with warm and cold transparent primaries, single pigment if possible) and then buy tubes to fill the pans.
Why would I buy a set when they always seem to have opaque yellows, cadmium as the warm red and some sort of black?

I think they came out well, especially for not having tested them before hand. I made myself a custom Schmincke pallette, when I lived in Germany because they are a lot cheaper there. I like the paints, they are very reliable. But I also made the same mistake and purchased the Yellow ochre thinking, it's Schmincke, it must be good? But I do not enjoy it either. I mean its fine, but it's not the kind of yellow ochre I'm used to. So I feel you! It's kind of dull to be honest. If you are thinking of picking up some other Schmincke paints I would recommend Lazur Gelb - I think it's called Transparent Yellow - 209 . It's an azo yellow, sort of like a very yellow green gold. I think you'd like it, it's super punchy! And I think it's pretty unique. It's encouraging to see you pulling out your sketchbook everyday, it's a feat for sure! High fives!

  • @didi7074

About the yellow ochre from that palette being more opaque than you are used to: schmincke has one of the most opaque yellow ochres you will find. Even Denise agrees it's extremely opaque. Personally I find it gross, I don't like it

It depends on the conditions the paper were left in. Since it's only three years and I assume this was stashed away in a drawer in a room with A/C, it should be fine since little to no moisture was introduced.
