I love how unselfish and generous you are about sharing your talent. I always learn something from your vedios
Clear gesso over a gouache underpainting on that black Stonehenge and then pastel.
Huh! Interesting!
Metallic watercolors look great on black Stonehenge printmaking or watercolor paper. White watercolor/thinned white gouache underpainting. Then paint regular watercolor on top.
Blows my mind that I can get these new strathmore sewn books at walmart and not at michaels/hobby lobby! I love them!
YES!
These look like great options! I, too, sketch almost exclusively on 100% cotton watercolor paper. I recently grew so frustrated with trying to find my perfect sketchbook that I tried something new: I bought my favorite paper & went to the nearest copy center. They cut it to my preferred size & bound it for me, all for ~ $5/book. I have a 4x6 spiral with hard cover, 4x6 spiral with flexible cover and 6x8 glue-bound with soft cover. It’s been a joy to have what feels like the right books!
Yes, I know many artists do that. I have a Cinch spiral binding system of my own, but the bulk and insecurity of wire binding due to tears puts me off most times.
I agree completely about the bulk, though I’ve gotten used to it. I get so frustrated spending money time after time on books that don’t have great paper. I really appreciate your reviews because they help me avoid buying more “junk” supplies. 🤪
Love your night sky on the Stonehenge black watercolour paper is great for metallic & pearl watercolours, I know they are not traditionally an artist quality watercolour. There are heaps of brands available.
Love the size of the elongated tear off Strathmore pad, it would be great for panoramas.
Daniel Smith luminescent pigments look great on black wc paper
I think this black pack is a great excuse to pick up a few of those luminescent colors.
When he said black paper... I thought I now have a reason to by DS iridescence watercolors.... 🥰
LOL, that Mini just touches my heart! Thanks for the links, I've been looking for the Strathmore
The finetec coliro mica paints would look good on the black paper
Oooo the metallic watercolors would look great on the black paper.
I love the ZigZag book. It's perfect for my style and I felt as though I was just waving the brush around and paintings appeared!
My local art supply store, Dakota Art in Bellingham, had the Strathmore watercolor sketchbooks in stock in time for my vacation earlier this month. I made multiple paintings on both sides of the pages, and I'm really happy with them.
Thanks for the feedback!
That’s where I got mine. They are the first place I found them in stock. I was looking for weeks
Aren't we fortunate to have such a wonderful resource??? 😁😁😁😁😁
Oh wow that’s great with the Stonehenge black paper. I did not know that acrylic painting would do well with any kind of watercolor paper.
I am definitely going to have to try some of the 100 % cotton paper soon. I am still using 98 lb. paper & 140 lb. paper. Thanks for sharing this with us. I am still learning how to get started as a beginner watercolor artist. Just celebrated painting for a year!
At first I didn't think I'd like the black paper but I think the Caran Dache watercolor crayons would be great on it! Nice showcase!
Probably so yes. A lot of people have recommended metallic or iridescent of some sort or another. Thanks Lindsay!
That mini zigzag book is so cute
I have worked on black card stock quite a bit--white gelly roll pens work great, white charcoal pencils, Prismacolor pencils, metalic watercolor, all work well.
I love the fact that the Strathmore sketchbooks are only paper bound: it will make it easier to fix them to a board and also more light weight for going outdoors! The black paper is really intriguing. I saw that there are some iridescent watercolor available in some brands, might be worth a try on this paper :) Thanks for showing us this new stuff!
I've been getting custom made sketchbooks by @naturesketches that are just wonderful. But it would be so nice if manufacturers would realize that 100% cotton paper sketchbooks are wanted!! I'll have to give this strathmore one a go, but I agree I'd rather a hardbound option
I have black watercolour paper, bought by mistake, I thought I could use it when I make card. Seeing You try it made me wanna play with it.
I love your enthusiasm! I want them all! I am looking forward to more videos of you using them.
These Strathmore travel journals look awesome I really like the sizes, can't wait to try them.
Thank you for sharing your new goodies. It is a very appreciated video.
I’m excited about those Strathmore travel journals. Thanks for letting us know about these new products.
Yea, Strathmore...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻thank you. We love 100%cotton sketchbooks.!
Love the sketchbooks and the black paper from stonehenge...its beautiful!!
Awesome news. I love new sketch books. So full of possibilities.
Love good options! Thankis for this review!!!!
Watched on my tv had to like and comment here. Thank you for your dedication to our education ❤️💕👏
Steve this is a great review of sketchbooks and pads. It’s always a joy watching your vlogs because I learn so much. Thank you!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🤗
Really cool to see these tested out!! That mini Hahnemuhle is just adorable. I am going to have to get my hands on one for my micro field nature journaling kit!!
Chalkboard sayings and such would look great on this.
i just discovered you and i am already your fan
Be still my heart! What exciting news! Can't wait to try the black paper and the Strathmore journals. Thank you!
Ooh those strathmore books could be used like signatures and be bound in a book. I would get 4 or 5 and bind them. Black paper with metallic florals would be lovely. I like to make my own sketchbooks with watercolour paper pads and cut them up and bind into a sketchbook.
That's a good idea. If you bind 4 to 5 of the new Strathmore books, though, you'll spend $100-$125!
I just love it when you add your sense of humour to your videos. I loved it from the beginning. i can't help it I'm a born again minder =) .
I'm just coming to the end of a sketchbook, and I've been on the hunt for a good 100% cotton replacement. So, this was absolutely perfect!
on black paper in watercolor mostly luminescent, irridescent, glitter, metallic etc works best.
I started with black paper the first time I tried gouache. Love it.
Thanks for sharing these new products. They all look great. I am really interested in the Stonehenge Aqua Black. I think that the Finetec metallic paints would look beautiful on that. Gansai Tambi makes some pearl and gem colors that might work on black.
That mini was too cute to pass up! I'm broke now lol.
wow you are almost at 200k! Well done! I enjoyed this video & the new sketchbooks :)
Steve, if you are interested, Saunders waterford do a 100 % cotton sketchbook size ( aka spiral fatpad) in hot press and cold press, in fact they actually do a couple of sizes, I think the biggest is 11 x 15 from memory. Winsor and Newton also do a cold press 100 cotton spiral bound that is sketchbook size. There’s a couple of other manufacturers too, but those two are off the top of my head. If you have trouble finding them, and want to see them, let me know.
I have a Winsor Newon one, but thanks for the heads up on Saunders Waterford. I like Bee's spiral watercolor books too. I am particularly interested in bound journals though. They seem to be the rarest birds unless you make or buy a handmade one.
The Mind of Watercolor Yes the bound journals are hard to find. I know it’s not exactly watercolour paper but Strathmore’s series 5 100% cotton mixed media hard bound journal is excellent, watercolour lays down really nice on it. Not done heavy washes on it yet but it’s unlikely a journal would require pieces that need a heavy wash. I’m very interested in the Strathmore’s you show here, Though I am terrible as I know I have a paper fetish, I am trying my best not to buy more watercolour sketchbooks/journals/papers but we shall see what next month brings. I’ve just ordered a sample pad of Legion’s new 100 % cotton ~ ~ black ~ ~ watercolour paper which should be excellent for gouache, acrylics and colour pencil pieces. I know Van Gogh do a black watercolour paper one but that is pulp only so doesn’t interest me. I will let you know if I find any bound cotton journals. Have a great weekend! PS: I agree the Hahnemühle and Pentalic journals are alike, though for me personally, Hahnemühle just win it.
Those Strathmore books have officially caught my eye...
Hi Steve,
Great video as usual. Strathmore has been making hardbound (and soft bound) sketchbooks with their 500 series (all cotton) for a while. Jackson’s sells them and I have also seen them in art stores in US.
I've not see one in a store ever and I've been in quite a few art stores. Including online suppliers like Cheap Joes, Blick or Jerry's Artarama. If you're talking about the Mixed Media spiral or hardbound books, they aren't watercolor paper even though they're 500 series. They'll take some water but not the same.
The Mind of Watercolor I see! Thanks for clarifying
Thanks for sharing the new sketchbook products-also glad to see something new on the market! The Stonehedge Black paper would be PERFECT for metallic watercolors like from Coliro or Hydracolor (on Etsy). 📚 🎨 👍
Hi Steve!! So nice to "see" you!
Super cool.... video - thanks!
This is helpful! I had been looking at the Strathmore sketchbooks for traveling and they look like they'll be a good option. I wish they were hardbound with more pages, but I do love Strathmore's papers and that they're 140 lb.
A month or two ago, I bought a what I thought was a 6x9 leather cover journal that was refillable to carry my individual bee paper around in. Long story short, It didn't work, it was too short for those papers and I gave my daughter the journal that came with it. I really like the strathmore travel journal 8.5x 5.5. That is the size that is supposed to fit that refillable leather cover. I just bought it. Got my fingers crossed that it fits that leather cover so I finally have a use for it! 😂
Thx for sharing, finding great paper journals are so hard for me to find... Now I have an education
In addition to to media you mentioned his will probably work well for Inktense, pastels or the more opaque colored pencils.
Out of everything, I'm like, "Why have I never put gouache in a normal watercolor palette?" I've always used it more like acrylic and used a plate. I've got a project this weekend!
Ya the zig zag reminds me of something out of the 70's (zig zag papers). Lol. Good review. The tiny book is something else. To small for me. Thank you for the information. 😊
I've played around with black card stock paper before and loved the results. Black watercolor paper would be so much better. Thanks!
Definitely looking forward to the Strathmore travel journals, but now it's a little bit of a tease. I'm headed to Norway and Iceland in June and it's a toss up as to whether they would be in on time. Oh well. At least you received the advanced copies and can tell us that they are great. :)
That black paper would be good with Colio or whatever there called. The watercolor that shows up on black
That black paper is a must.
I have also been impressed with the Kilimanjaro sketchbooks from Cheap Joe’s. 100% cotton and 140 lb.
Thank you...great information
I used the DS luminescent paint to do planets and other space scenes. Also used a mica watercolor.
Maybe the Derwent Inktense blocks would be good. The white makes a really opaque and waterproof paint - you could layer over it.
Yay! Cotton 140 lb.! Thanks, Steve!
Steve, the black watercolour paper..maybe use white watercolour ground under the watercolour paint where bright colour is needed?
Great post! I have decided after a trial, that I will be only using Moleskine for inks and pencil, wasn't impressed with the chalk-like finish of the paint. I will be looking to try the Strathmore. I do like the Pentalic journal.
Hurray for Strathmore coming out with cotton sketchbooks! I'm always so disappointed when looking for new sketchbooks that cotton is so hard to find or so expensive.
I'm so excited about the Strathmore cotton books! I ordered one as soon as I saw them in a Canadian shop ;)
Thanks for this awesome showcase, now I really want to paint :D
Let me know how you like them.
That face you made at the beginning, before you said "Hello Minders", just too much. I spit coffee everywhere when you did that. So finally - it is Strathmore that took the initiative. Not the company I'd expect but good for them. I am sooo glad you did a demonstration!! Definitely getting the sewn one, if the price is sane. Thanks! I hope you have a coffee-spitting fun weekend!
Wow! I haven’t seen those strathmore books. They look really nice and handled your paint really well. I have to try them sometime.
I was impressed with them. Would like to see something other than paper covers but at least they're sewn bindings. Thanks Jared!
I know Steve's mentioned it before, but for those looking for a pre-made Arches field book, there's a seller named ran2424 on eBay who sells spiral bound arches 140lb. CP field books in two sizes. He also sells field books with Fabriano artistico paper for slightly less. I don't know why Arches discontinued making them. Although these are pricey, they're the best pre-made version I've found.
Note: I'm unaffiliated with either the seller or Arches. This is just an FYI for those interested.
Yes, good guy. He and his wife make them. He runs out and tends to make them in batches but if you keep checking he usually resupplies. NatureSketches on Etsy is another good one. She does beautiful case bound journals with Arches and Saunders Waterford.
Black watercolor paper...I don’t have to worry about preserving my white!! 🤣
thanks
The Strathmore cotton sketchbooks look great! I've always wondered why, when Strathmore makes THREE different cotton watercolor papers (Imperial 500 Series, Gemini and Aquarius II) they didn't offer any of those papers in sketchbook format. Glad they have now--it'll be interesting to compare the two formats and see which of their papers they're using. I have samples of the Gemini and Imperial and like both of them, Gemini is a bit more like Arches. I know some artists use the 500 Series Mixed Media sketchbook which is 100% cotton, have been meaning to try it, too. Thanks for sharing these sketchbooks!
Agreed, Strathmore 500 varieties are great. I have some Gemni and Imperial and like them both).
I wonder how NeoColor II might work on the black cotton paper also...hmm... :). Oh, and maybe watercolor pencils over a white watercolor pencil sketch..hmm...
It seems like the little landscape Strathmore watercolor would pack neatly on top of the tin palette.
Neo II would work great!
My “to buy” list always gets longer every time I watch your videos. The black watercolor paper will be great for pearlescent watercolor paints. I had given up on 100% cotton WC sketchbooks I could buy...which is why I’ve been making my own. Knowing the Strathmore books are an option is great - though it’s going to be awhile before I need one since I’m literally making myself a year’s stash of handmade WC journals right now. Finding Arches paper on sale plus willingness to play with bookbinding = journals in multiple sizes (5x7 landscape & portrait, 9x6, and 10x6 so far) in both hot and cold press as well as mixed finish. Break is over...time to get back to my experiments in bookbinding.
Angela IridescenceArtGlass I literally waited a year after watching his video on arches paper. Then finally found them on sale!!!! The hot pressed was sold out so I got the smooth. 😍
But now I’m hooked and it’s back to normal price 😢
Cape Town Watercolour Art Blick currently has it on sale...until the end of this month I believe. Not sure that helps you or not.
Thank you, The Stonehenge black.....Halloween City, cards! You probably could do the inktober challenge using various colored inks on the black paper.I need to get in an order and start using it. Strathmore travel journals 👍🏻✅ , it looks great! I still wish Arches would bring back their spiral journal made with their paper.. Okay, look forward to your review videos. Have a great weekend!
I completely agree. There's so few 100% cotton sketchbooks out there. I used to love the old Moleskine Watercolor Sketchook a couple of years back, but they've changed the paper and it's absolutely terrible. Good move from Strathmore. I know Winsor & Newton have a 100% cotton watercolour journal available in larger sizes too, but it's only available in Australia.
The Stonehenge black cotton paper would be awesome to work with Gansai Tambi Japanese watercolor paints! Some of the pans have opaque colors and I've tested them on black cardstock, they show up beautifully but are terrible for glazing on cellulose based watercolor paper (due to the nature of different binders) but I've been told they fare better on cotton paper so this watercolor pad being black AND cotton paper is the perfect combination to try out gansai paints :)
Hi Steve. That black paper looks so fun!
A suggestion for you. I don’t know if you use any, but how about showing how to use glazing medium, luminescent medium, ox gall liquid etc. in watercolour painting.
If the Strathmore journals could be used on both sides that would be great!
As of right, Etchr has only released their own sketchbooks. The Perfect Sketchbook Series has not yet been released if I'm reading the blog correctly, they should be coming out later. etchrlab.com/blogs/news/shiny19
Etchr sketchbooks are 200gsm 100% cotton. Perfect Sketchbooks will be available in 300gsm Fabriano and 300gsm non Fabriano paper.
The Perfect Sketchbook will be launched on their website later this year.
Yes, I forgot that distinction. At least they will all be cotton. I'll be trying out both releases.
Great reviews, Thank you. Since I’ve just gotten back into the medium, finding the paper seems to be the trickiest part.
What is that cool little green handled tool?
Look to this very new production called,. Hahnemühle Watercolour 300 and 640 set new standards for high-quality watercolor paper, I think it is new by Hahnemuhle exceptional well, many artists do not know, thank you.
Thank you .... I am a greeting card maker and like hearing about papers. I found that Black paper is hard to fine..... I mean BLACK BLACK .....
Most papers are black but not dark dark.
Good news. Even I can tell the difference. In USA first time in 16 years and bought Kilimanjaro from cheap joes to try. Wish the strathmore had been out. Thanks
I want to try the metallic watercolors and Daniel Smith iridescent scenes, like underwater scenes.
Moe Joe Designs yes!! That would be a neat illustration 😍
Thank you for the demo! I’m always curious about watercolor paper. I keep saying I want to take up watercolor painting and continue to chicken out.
Buy just one small pad of Arches cold, one paintbrush, one tube of Daniel Smith series 4 or series 5 paint. Your fear will be replaced with excited wonder. I promise. (Your style will really pop beautifully in watercolour too. No need to reinvent yourself. Just bloom.) Cheers!😎
A Remedy Project Oh thank you! I’ll try that sometime and make a video out of it! It’ll be a fun experience. Are you an artist as well?
Use it with your artist loft watercolor cakes
Use the Stonehenge paper for a moon light pic!
I want stone henge black for my color pencils 😍😍😍
Check out what your buddy Angela Fehr does with watercolors and black backgrounds :)
Thank you for your very informative videos. Did you ever review the strathmore travel tear off pads? I'm curious because the first one I got had some tooth to the paper and subsequent ones definitely appear more like hot press. Would appreciate any informative you have. Thank you.
Steve: I’ll just try this really quick. Just really quick I’ll do a little something. It’ll just be really quick. .... *minutes later has pulled out the easel and is still playing with tweaking a sweet composition* 😂 Who could blame you! Cotton sketchbook is very exciting indeed.
🤣 so true!
What do you think about the Meeden Watercolor block?
Steve does your Holbein Guanch crack and fall out of the pans when they dry out?
Wonder how much those Strathmore books will be? Of course, you won't find them in the craft stores with 40% coupon but hopefully they aren't too expensive!
pesto12601 the 7x10” is 21$ on Amazon
@@Kaylasdaintydesk Eek... over a $1 a page... bummer! Not for us "casual" watercolor folks....
@@Kaylasdaintydesk EWE!
❤️❤️❤️
What is up with that?? I was so excited to get one, but I am NOT waiting that long!!
where can I ourchare the Perfect Sketch book?
I don't know if you knew this but the Stathmore travel journal takes 1-2 months to ship!!!!
Woah! To the states?
@@mindofwatercolor It says ships from and sold from Amazon within 1-2 months! I don't understand why that us but is very disappointing!
So Steve and the rest of the "Minders". What if a hardbound, 100% cotton sketchbook could be created. Says Joe, Fine Art Sales Manager for Hahnemühle USA. What sizes? What price range for say 5"x 8"? I'd love to present some ideas to home base in Germany!
The two Strathmore sizes are good places to start. Personally I would love to see a horizontal sketchbook too. The handmade ones I buy are usually that. 5x8, 6x9 or 7x10 in landscape orientation. $30-40 (depending on how many pages) I would expect for quality 140 cold press paper. The Perfect Sketchbook (8x10 roughly) was $50 for a leather bound hard bound book.
