    I really love the way you mix darker skin tones and shadows. As a dark POC, it is so hard to find examples of doing dark skin tones well that don't make the subject's skin look muddy or lack warmth, especially with watercolors. I find many artists avoid it or say they simply can't do them. I always find your videos very helpful! Keep up the awesome work!

    • @MM-dw5ir
      @MM-dw5ir Před 4 lety +4

      Omg, yes. Most watercolorists only do people with lighter skin. I use something like yellow ochre and violet to make a really nice, dark but still vibrant brown for skin tones. Indian yellow and burnt sienna also make great mixtures for brown without being too dull. But using reds and greens seems to make a much duller and flat brown in my experience :)

      @@MM-dw5ir Using a quinacridone gold for the yellow in the mixes works really well too! It's my favorite for using in darker skin tone mixes.

    Yes watercolor tips and tricks! I love the medium and I feel like I am departing from beginner status into intermediate territory so I would love to know more about the properties and how I can make the colors work for me rather than letting the watercolor be the boss. I'd also love to learn about how to be more loose with my painting process. I feel like I am a color inside the lines , do copious amounts of studies before beginning the real piece kind of artist which isn't necessarily bad but knowing how to be more gestural and spontaneous in the situations that I want that spontaneity would be beneficial in my overall repertoire. Fabulous video as always. Just a treat to watch you work!

    I've actually been eyeing that sketchbook. I've been using the 500 series mixed media paper. It's thinner so it doesn't handle as much but I don't find myself fighting the paper as much as with Canson paper. I would love to see more in-depth information about other watercolor paper brands too. It's hard to justify spending a lot on a particular brand of watercolor paper knowing that it might not be the right fit. I'm not saying to go out and buy everything to test it, but if you have any experiences with particular brands, I'd love to know your thoughts and observations.
    On a side note, I just realized your sketchbook challenge ends on my birthday. 😭

      I recently tried out the Bockingford fat pad (got it off Jackson’s) and it’s wonderful 100% cotton paper. “Affordable” is a subjective word but the quality is outstanding and it was less expensive per page than most of the other ones I’ve seen on the market. They also offer sheets as well but I’ve only tried the fat pad. They’re all spiral bound. Oh! Jackson’s usually offers sample packs as well. That’s how I found my love for Bockingford!

    • @jumarie9239
      @jumarie9239 Před 4 lety +2

      @@taniaalva5557 No, not all Canson paper. I have sketch paper and bristol paper from them that I like. I meant that in terms of watercolor paper. Watercolor paper is something that needs to be able to handle a little more 'abuse'. I typically layer more with watercolors. That, plus the fact that you need to work with wet paper, makes the Canson paper frustrating to work with. It warps, it pills, and sometimes there are even spots where my watercolors don't adhere to the paper fully. Part of that could be me. I'm no expert. But I notice a difference when I go to use even the mixed media Strathmore journals. These are all just my thoughts on it. Someone else may work with watercolors differently and not see an issue. To be fair, the lower quality Strathmore watercolor paper gives me similar issues.
      Sorry if I gave a whole essay. I tend to say a lot.

The Brand belong to a charming couple and is based in London. The brushes are perfect to start with, maybe a little light weight but over all has a good shape. If you wanna check and maybe do a review of some afordable brushes option. It's under 30$ for 15 brushes.

    Thank you for the video! I have the strathmore 100% cotton mixed media sketchbook with the brown cover, and I can't stand it. I use it for swatching out paint mixes mainly. I remember watching a video that demonstrated that it didn't have much (if any) sizing, and therefore the chroma of the paint faded when it absorbed into the paper. Do you feel like the sizing on this sketchbook keeps your colors bright? If so I'll be adding it to my wishlist : )
