MGS3 is straight-up a cartoon. Without the detailed texture painting, stylised proportions, bespoke lighting and shader effects, the game's blocky design and theatrical physical performances in and out of cutscenes are gonna look goofy af. Like some uncanny asset-flip.

MGS2/3 is still a great example of just everything good with games. It has long cinematic cutscenes, but they are all skippable getting you right back to gameplay
The graphics are stylized yet still impressive for its time which also allowed it to run better than most and hold up over the years better than most
Tons of interesting in depth mechanics with the environment.
We need more games to look at these for inspiration

I don't think the graphics need to be stylised; Kojima was trying to make it as realistic as possible with the hardware that was available at the time. But there was an art direction, including colour grading, that was ingrained it its visual identity. I think we can have near photorealism while still having less "realistic" tweaks for visual flare, just as they do in cinema, which is what Kojima gets a lot of inspiration from anyway.

Honestly, it feels like Alex doesn't know the series all too well. The snappy animation style has been adopted into the series with somewhat realistic looking graphics already: just look at MGS4 and MGS5. Neither does he realize that the core of the issues fans have with this trailer has nothing to do with the infamous "piss" filter.

I don't believe it's wise to induce a sepia tone, but rather to grade color in a cinematic temperature, so that when tendered in warm color space it will be pitch perfect rather than overly yellowed by compounding the warm / yellow aspects of both the game and the display. What would be wise, for the sake of placating people, would be to offer a very good suite of optional filters the way Bluepoint does in Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls.

The aim should not be to be as realistic as possible. Even films have art directors and colorists.

case in point KAZ of PD also said this of GT, its his clean look of reality etc....
we can see from modern engines that reality or realism is easy or whats the difficult word... its so easy to now just grab a premade asset and duplicate it in whatever.... UE5 etc
thats why you can tell from the really AAA toptier Sony / R* theres a massive drop off to EA, UBI type ''AAA'' where its an illusion and you know theyve masked realism and just done the bare minimum and have tried to pul the wool over your eyes with marketing.... the new avatar game...... NOT impressed visuslly, horizon1 on ps4 looks better!
you can tell theyre trying to dazzle with flora and fauna, again horizon looks ART DIRECTED, there is art direction in these realistic games too.....
we ALL may think GT and KAZ is in pursuit of realism.... yes he is, but people may not know Kaz is a photographer and takes pictures and i think also a cinematographer hence the still industry leading replays!!!
kaz is in pursuit of a particular style of realism and it is art directed...... just compare to ANY forza... heck even GT1 in replays still captures the imagination and still manages to fool you into thinking theyre real cars driving round a slightly pixelated world
its the lighting in GT that noone has managed to capture which when added to the replays it all hans of the core meticulous detailing in the cars and hard surface modeling....
noone can say forza or even pc powered project cars 2 looked LIKE close to GT eventhough ALL modeled cars should really look the same.... again Kaz is obsessed with lenses and apertures and f stops and exposures and quality of lighting.... when you talk about cars and how you view them like youre an architecture or art student then you know they view and treat their passion differently to x car game maker just wants to put out competing product with cars and tracks to eat into and capture audience and generate revenue stream after audience captured....
the difference in SONY and the rest is this slight distinction...... due care and diligence, attention to a specific detsil to differentiate to car game a b c, or open world abc etc
and for connoiseurs yes you can taste the difference in steak v maccy ds..... sony is on a different level..... yes i include xbx in the maccy ds convo.. xbx cant even touch EA or ubi says alot..... konami is just sprinkling fresh garnish over 2 week old steak and reheating is what theyre doing to MGS!! its an insult to MGS fans that they actually want on side!!!

I wouldn't say that MGSV looks stylized at all, he has always tried to push graphics to their limits, I think when people say PS2 games look stylized, it's really the technical limitations of the time. When I think stylized PS2 games I think Mark of Kri and Jak + Daxter etc. I don't think Kojima ever meant for MGS2/ 3 to be stylized, but within the confines of the PS2 nothing could look exactly photo real with texture, polygon, lighting limitations. Honestly I would say MGS2 Tanker opening is one of the most photoreal things on PS2.

The crouch walking and how certain things move makes me think it's based off of MGSV a bit but with MGS3. I think MGS3 is inspired by 60s/70s bond/spy movies so that's that color grading your seeing! and it seems to be missing that original inspiration. Also the animations seem to be just modified MGSV animations. I'm worried they are gonna keep the level layouts the same which would ruin the pace of the game considering the game play seems very different and modern like MGSV. After the recent Master Collection I have low expectations for this remake. You cant just remake the game play and graphics and expect it to be a beloved remake... look at the RE4/RE2 remakes they have the spirit of the original but are very different level design based on the updated game play.

The recycled animation from MGS5 is partly what throws me off and gives it a "we put assets into UE5", and the other is the lack of color grading. Nailed it with the "Mario in UE" comment, that's exactly what I get as well. And outside of the visuals, they're also recycling all the voicework from the original PS2 game. I think we're transitioning away from that in AAA games, where now art style is going to be differentiated less based on the tech that's used, and more on the creative art direction of the designers.
Not so different than movies. Every live-action movie is shot using the same lighting and physics system that earth provides, but different cinematographers, directors, and editors still manage to make their films look unique based on their creative direction.

I love MGS3 and I'm more than happy for the remake to get rid of the colour filter. Obviously the aim with the original one was to go with this cold war era camera colouring, but I don't miss all the brown/yellow colour filters from the late PS2 and early PS3 era. On a CRT it's also not as jarring as it is on a modern HRD 2k/4k monitor/TV. AC Mirage has the AC1 colour filter and the colour grading worked nicely for AC1, but for a modern game with the much more detailed textures it just doesn't work as well. Especially not if you play it first without the filter and see how colourful the game is.

I still prefer the presentation from MGS1 that was mostly neutral colour grading outside of select sections like the Psycho Mantis one that hsd a heavy green colour grading. The rest was environmentally very fitting like the more blue for the freezer section or the redish one for the smelting section. Obviously textures, models, etc. all aged poorly since it was on PS1 and that horrible texture warping from PS1. I do hope they remake that game. The section of MGS4 whwre you are back on the island are amazing.
Generally a lot of collur grading artistic choices don't hold up well over time. Unlike artistic choices like cell shading for games like Borderlands or Silent Hill using the fog because the console couldn't render far into the distance, so they put the fog there to hid the pop in.

I can imagine the original MGS3 as part of its development has an immense "style guide", like a rulebook of how things look, what do enemies look like, gadgets, vehicles, camo, buildings, vegetation, characters, basically everything to build the visual identity of the game, but when you're remaking something you already have something to work from... you're basically copying someone's homework, it is by its very nature a derivative work.
In the case of something like RE4 remake it's clear they started from scratch using the original as the influence, but MGSD seems to just be a graphics update, the levels appear to be the same and it was confirmed they're reusing the dialogue, so we're reusing content and mixing it with freshly generated assets from a team that, no offense to them, are not the legendary developers of those original PS2 games, it's like a graphics mod people always complain that the modder is messing with the original feel of the game.
Two examples of nailing the original feel, RE4HD, the devs went to extreme lengths to preserve the original visual style of the game, and Black Mesa, a total remake from scratch but insanely faithful to the source material and its sequels.

@@gearoidoconnell5729 I haven't looked at the remaster of Diablo 2 too much but yes since you can toggle graphics back and forth i imagine it's very faithful, not like Diablo 3 where the more colourful Blizzard influences started slipping in losing the Diablo feel.

I think the issue is that they are doing a remake but keeping all these old "quirks" (if you could call them) about Metal Gear being designed as an MSX2 game, stiff movement, game-y areas (defined by clear defined bounds), game-y enemies (that react to certain stimuli only, which are gameplay aspects). And it feels it's gonna be exactly the same game but running on a prettier engine.
It feels like it's stuck to the past if you compare it to the Resident Evil remakes by Capcom for example, which were made from the ground up based off the previous games, we knew the areas, we knew the boss fights, we knew the plot, but Capcom added so much more, new interactions, new character traits, new puzzles even, and new gameplay that improved on the old fixed-camera gameplay.
Instead, this MGS remake seems like a budget project, made to cash-in on the franchise popularity by exploiting a small studio that wanna get their name out there by doing cool crap.

  • @Kriss_ch.
    @Kriss_ch. Před 8 měsíci +6

For some reason what they've shown of Delta doesn't look that different to me. The Demon's Souls remake for example was super obviously a different direction, which I personally couldn't stand. What they've shown here didn't stand out to me as replacing the art direction in the same way. If all it takes is turning up the yellow on my tv that's not a big problem lol.
I reserve my right to change my mind when we see more faces and see they're obviously mocapping real humans rather than basing it on Yoji Shinkawa designs though, lol. It's probably gonna be like the difference between Devil May cry 3, which very accurately captured Daigo Ikeno's concept art, and Devil May Cry 5, where it very obviously doesn't and is just modeled on real people. Not to throw any shade on the models they captured or anything. There's just a difference between doing characters based on artwork and characters based on face scanning or whatever they're doing. You can already see that issue if you look at the Pachinko version of mgs3 - it's not just color stuff, it's the style of the characters.

Looks impressive but definately looks like a different style. More like a UE5 tech demo. One thing that alot of these remakes have been missing is the original soundtracks, even if they modified those that would be cool. The music was a big part of the vibe in these games as well. They also eliminated the codec convos which was part of the whole feel too, for MGS5.
RE 4 Remake, as an example, was mostly awesome but it was still missing most of that original vibe, soundtrack and it felt a little more like a bunch of assets put together. Hard to identify exactly what it was, but alot of these remakes lose thier original vibe.
