So, in honor of Dr. Schmidt who passed earlier this year, I came back to this 6 year old video, likely the source where many people first learned of Dr. Schmidt, to give the actually important reason for his work: Dr. Schmidt and other entomologists had a hypothesis about the evolutionary links between Social insect venom (Honeybees, ants, etc.) and isolated insect venom (Many kinds of wasps). The hypothesis was that social insects required a sting that was not just painful but actually toxic, as the value to a predator for attacking a beehive of thousands of bees requires a more potent defense. So they needed to measure both the toxicity, which is easily done, and the "pain" of these stings, which is less easily done. Schmidt then took it upon himself to measure the sting pains himself as shown in the video to get at least some sort of index of pain measurement.
I used the ragu test on my child and thanks so much cuz now he has finally stopped crying. He hasn’t even made a noise for the past 5 hours
