Run it in my savage bolt action 17. I shoot the Hornady v-max as well. Didn't realize the A17 was that inconsistent on the speed. Pretty interesting. Thanks for posting.
I have a savage 93r17 bolt action and hornady is all I shoot in it I’m currently using the Hornady 20 grain XDT’s super accurate and hard hitting round!!!! Thanks for the video
I just purchased the A17 this past week and have had it out at the range twice. Both days cut short due to high wind and rain. First 100 rounds of the CCI A17 ammo I had 7 miss fires and 2 failure to eject. No issues with the trigger or clip falling out if you follow instructions. Next 100 rounds, Hornady V-Max no issues at all, very accurate the last twenty rounds 18 in a 2 inch circle with 2 fliers at 100yds. All rounds lethal to sage rats. This rifle replaces my Ruger Model 96 lever action which has been a great rifle but a wrist injury and arthritis has forced me to go with a semi auto. Topped the rifle with a Bushnell 4x12x40 scope. Varmints beware. I may even leave my AR15 at home next time I chase coyotes. This is a real blast to shoot.
Man oh man do you make it even harder to wait on Boyd's for that stock. My brand new A17 is still waiting patiently in the safe for a proper stock and glass bedding. Keep up the fun videos.
Just got back from the range. Time got away from me so I was only able to shoot the Hornady Vmax. The groups were really good with some you could cover with a quarter . Several shots were almost in the same hole. I was in a shooting bay that maxed out at 65 yards so I will take it to a hundred next time to see what this rifle can do. There were no failure to fires or failure to extract from the chamber. This rifle is amazingly light and the recoil is non existent. Putting a Boyds stock on this would make it a tack driver. The only negative was the trigger pull which was tough. I didn't bring the tool to lessen the pull so I hope that helps. Were you able to adjust the triiger pull with the tool provided? Do you know if Timmney or Gisselle make a trigger group for this rifle? Overall impression of this rifle is that Savage has a money maker on it's hand and with a Bull Barrel and better stock and Trigger this is going to be a classic.
Tried a spread of .3 shot groups at a 100 yds with 17hmr ammo through my Marlin 17 to find what shoots best and the Hornady 17gr vmax gave me 1/4 MOA the CCI's and Winchesters were around 1" ..after seeing your chronograph of the Hornady's I can see why it's consistent.. Awesome stuff and I like the grape tomato idea, I'll have to give it a try lol

cavedweller1959 I have shot nearly 1000 rounds out of the one I own, it's accurate, but the ammo is inconsistent at best. Failure to feed, failure to fire even with a strike from the firing pin. I like the gun, it just performs way better with Hornady ammo. I have ran almost every type of .17 ammo through the gun and Hornady is the most consistent on spread, accuracy, expectancy of fire and feed.
Crap ! Wish I had seen this before I sent my A17 into Savage for repair. I suspect I'll be paying dearly for that 😩 I didn't notice the A17 ammo being so dirty but did have the identical issues. Also had the rim end of the cartridge bulging, which is what concerned me and why I sent the rifle in
Unfortunately I was at one of the back ranges at my local range that only went to 70 yards that I verified with a range finder. Shot off a bench rest / sand bags . Once I got it zeroed in it was basically up to me. One group was quarter size with some flyers that I attribute to me and that awful trigger press. In spite of that lousy trigger which my next time out I can hopefully adjust . I really think Savage has a great thing going here. The rifle never jammed , is super light and Boyd's wood stocks are available for it. If Giselle or Timney make a drop in trigger this rifle could be amazing. Next time out I'm going to a hundred and adjusting the trigger. I will post my results. I hope this helps.

I was skeptical about purchasing an A17 due to the negative reviews. Not anymore! My A17 shoots flawlessly with the CCI 16grn TNT Green ammo. It will not function at all using Winchester 17grn! Mine came with a laminated Boyd stock and is a tack driver. They definitely are a finicky semi auto, but good out to 200yds!

I bought two 50 round packs of ammo. Hornady and CCI . My testing duplicated your testing exactly. CCI failed to feed a few times and a overpressure round + a misfire. That's out of only 20 CCI rounds . Hornady ammo was flawless .
It sounds like the 17gr Hornady Vmax is your preferred round. What kind of intervals can you go without cleaning this rifle without having malfunctions?
+ILicence I think the CCI TNT & CCI V-MAX have been the best lately, I am starting to think cleaning this gun to much is not good. Since running out of A17 ammo, I have only wet patch/2 dry patch cleaned the bore after about 75-100 rounds, with maybe 200 rounds after that so far. The action is still clean as a whistle, From here on I may give it some lube but it will not get cleaned until it starts to fail or the groups go to hell. Most likely next summer on the p-dog towns. Thanks..

The A17 rifle, as with all blow back semi auto's, inherently blows soot back into the chamber because the bolt is opening and extracting while the barrel is still under pressure vs a bolt action gun with a expanded case sealing it off during the entire length of pressurization. Couple that with sooty rimfire priming and its going to be dirty. Take a look at any .22 LR in a semi, its filthy with crud build up within 50 shots. Wont be any different with the 17HMR. Actually with the larger volume of propellant and higher pressure in a 17HMR its potentially worse fouling than a .22 semi. So its not the ammo per say, its the drawbacks of a blowback action with a magnum bottleneck case! FYI: The truth is all 17HMR ammo (except Winchester) is manufactured by CCI for Brand XX. All 17 HMR made by CCI uses the same propellant under every bullet whether its the 17 gr or 20 gr varieties. The only difference is the charge weight gets adjusted for for each bullet to achieve a velocity spec while remaining in SAAMI pressure specs. The A17 obviously has a heavier charge to get another 100 fps, but it the same powder as the rest of them. I say try any other ammo in the A17 and you'll see its going to crud up at the same rate.
I want to believe what you are saying, but I’m skeptical I zero in my A17 or my bolt action 17HMR at 100 yds with Hornady VMax I now shoot CCI’s 17 gr (same manufacturer of Hornady right??), and my groups are high and to the left with both rifles. Not just a bit, but about 4” high, 2” to left. Why? Same manufacturer, propellant, etc, right??
@@ss0073 lot to lot variation can cause POI shift. Rimfire shows this more so than center fire. Biggest issue from lot to lot that can cause POI shift is; the Bullet itself. So I pulled Bullets to weigh charges and inspect Bullets to try to find the variable. I noticed the better shooting lots had less crimp than the worse shooting ones....no surprise.
