It’s a shame that this movie is as bad as it is because “THEY/THEM” (They Slash Them) is one of the most creative names for a horror movie I’ve seen in ages
God damn. I JUST got it.
fr i luv it sm
What's so creative about it?
@@aaronroberts8601 it's a word play.
I came up with a joke like 6 months ago with this punchline “did you hear what the non-binary serial killer does to their victims? They slash them” and I felt original so it kinda sucked to have that proven false
This movie felt like it initially wanted to be a drama/thriller, then underwent reshoots to become a horror.
To me, this movie is comparable to the 2019 remake of Black Christmas. Both movies wanted to be a mix of social comentary and horror but in the end, both forgot to be horror movies.
Yeah when they do that they hardly ever work. Tuned out of BCK/X '19 less than halfway through.
Scream 4 has the best, most predictive/accurate social commentary we will ever see in a slasher
@@kevyxcx5829 scream 4 was great as a movie but dreadful as an installment in the scream franchise. i so wish the franchise had been left at a trilogy, with 4 being an 'inspired by' at most
Disagree, they shouldn’t limit the plot to Sidney and then the films can go on forever and comment on the rise of American malice. Sorry about your myopia
Oooohhh boy. That black Christmas remake was one of the biggest fucking crappy pieces of fucking shit I ever had the misfortune of watching. I'd rather watch Cats again
I went in with extremely low expectations because of the concept and it was still bad. Nothing happened and it was predictable. Not a single character we care about dies or we don’t get a satisfying death for characters we hated. They took a risk having it set at a conversion camp and it came across tasteless. I agree that the boy sex scene felt added just because two girls had sex. There was nothing building up to those two characters
Me and my mom watched it together and we said that the two dudes were the last two we were expecting to hook up. But I thought it took me awhile, about 3/4 of the way through, to figure out who the killer was since they hinted at a few other characters.
@@eihren3 Right!!! It would have 100% made more sense if Toby and Stu got together. The only reason why I think him and the other guy got together was because they forgot it was supposed to be a conversion camp theme and they just needed something to add for shock value.
The fact that the people being "hunted" didn't know they were being "hunted" took away the thrilling sensation of fighting for your life. The deaths were so sudden, we didn't have one single scene of the killer chasing the characters.
Just wanted to add that, to everything else said.
Also, if Stu (Cooper Koch) wasn't there it would have been harder to get through the movie 🤭
As a lesbian, I initially was interested in watching this because of the rep, but after watching your review, it sounds infuriating.🙂😅
As a gay man, I'm skeptical of the non-queer perspective presented here, at least w/regard to the queer experience. I trust SH's horror commentary, though. The idea of off-camera deaths does indeed sound lame.
@@pablodelsegundo9502 off camera deaths are lame especially in a slasher that’s the worst thing you can do
As Non-Binary this movie was stupid and really wasted potential, the LGBTQ+ community needed a good horror and this wasn't it 😑
Imo it wasn't great but it wasn't awful. I personally just don't care if a movie is corny or predictable. Yeah the horror elements could've been better. I was slightly traumatized by some of the kids talking about their lives and why they were there. Made me cry a couple times.
@@pablodelsegundo9502 I'm gay and I loved it. I thought it held some very intense and strong messaging. It was fun.
Okay, my least favorite thing about this movie was the final message being "People who are violent towards their violent oppressors are just as bad as them". That is quite literally demonization strategy used to keep people from allying with oppressed people. Obviously, going on a murder spree like this isn't a great way to revolt, but it really rubbed me the wrong way.
Options I would have preferred instead:
- Cut out the campers entirely and set it in the night before the campers arrive. The "protagonists" are the counsillors. The killer twist remains the same. However, this is the type of slasher movie where you actually end up rooting for the killer, who is taking revenge on the counsillors and is trying to be a savior. Leave whether you condemn or promote the killer's actions ambiguous, something for the viewer to think about.
- The campers are the actual villains and (rather predictably) the killer is one of the counsillors, who hunts the campers out of sheer hatred of them. Could have a great trans final girl storyline or something. Yes, that killer is predictable but predictable killers aren't uncommon in the genre at all. I think this could have a very satisfying ending of having an insecure queer person literally survive conversion camp and just come out stronger and prouder the other end.
There're no oppressed people in America.
Who is being violently oppressed?
Someone said it
Maybe the best thing about this movie is that it adds connections to the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game.
As a gay guy I absolutely hated it.
My friend and I watched it together and we were joking when they busted out singing that Pink song.
We were like I gotta go and then joked about saying how if we were one of the characters we would be going to Kevin Bacon's character and say you know what I'm straight now. 😂😂😂
You sound like a pick me
@@Hi-uv7nn don't know what you mean but sure. 🤷🏻♂️
@@izzyjoshuadavis I think they’re implying that you’re trying to position yourself as ‘not like other gays’ by your comment about the pink song. I don’t agree with (my interpretation of) their comment but yeah, hope that helps. I too would burst out laughing if there was a pink number in a movie
@@danielsimmich1858 sounds like they're digging too deep at a joke if that's the case. It was just a bad movie. Lol. But thanks for clarifying.
Right! That would be all you would have to do to escape. lmao
I absolutely hated the movie, and I’m very happy about the fact the Letterboxd score seems to getting lower and lower each day.
Also as a Letterboxd review pointed out, it’s heavily implied (and explicitly stated in atleast one case) that the councillors are the victims of conversion therapy as well, which really makes me think that the writers either completely forgot about that, or just didn’t think it through.
I kind of think they didn’t forget about it it’s just like they are drinking the kool-aid or have like a Stockholm syndrome or trauma bond type of thing with Kevin bacon
The score on Letterboxd is shit. People didn't even see it and voted 0.5. Way more stupid than the movie.
@@JulieSnydersucks that’s a complete lie, I know this because I was one of the people who left a 0.5/5 review for the movie, there’s over 3 times as many reviews as 0.5 scores.
Yeah the one guy is an ex camper & I think his fiancé (wife?) might’ve went through a different camp
@@JulieSnydersucks I saw the movie and I gave it 0.5. It was that bad. I'm sure there might be some people who are reviewing bombing it but I've also seen 5 star reviews just because it is LGBTQ.
Of all the places to break out in song, I wouldn't peg conversion camp to be one. That'd be like if Schindler's List had an imprompteau dance break where Schindler busts out some sick break-dancing moves.
Hmmm...🤔
stronger people can find freedom and joy no matter their circumstances
Well now I want to see them do that.
They/Them was trying so desperately to be inoffensive, but turned right around to being offensive again. Certainly wasn't THE most egregious movie, and I wasn't bothered by the depictions of basic trans/homophobia inflicted by the counselors (it was expected as this is set in a conversion camp, and honestly less harsh than anticipated), but its messaging was what bothered me. You can't release a social commentary piece, during a climate of extreme anti-trans rhetoric and legislation, and make the marginalized group fighting back out to be the Big Bad. This movie was toothless. One review I remember reading put this issue simply and succinctly: "Queer anger and revolt is not a weakness". And I don't know why They/Them had to make it out like it is.
how were they made out to be the "big bad"? there was a monologue in there that i think triggered people. it was pretty insensitive because it wasn't inaccurate per se but i think that was the problem, it wasn't satire, it was just a biased psychological analysis.
@@haileyrafferty2372 The ending message was that a conversion therapy survivor, seeking revenge for the trauma and abuse she endured, was someone who succumbed to evil in some way; that she was almost just as bad as the owners of said camp made to traumatize young children into "becoming straight/cis" (AKA repressing themselves to the point of deep depression often leading to taking their own life). Standing up for yourself in the face of abuse shouldn't have been depicted as a weakness & walking away shouldn't be seen as strength.
@@irohha ah yes I forgot about her
@@irohha She wasn't standing up for herself, though. She was just murdering people.
@@vlo4829A woman killing her abuser/tormenters and trying to protect other marginalized people from being tortured isn't standing up for herself? Okay. Nice media literacy.
For me, the least favorite thing is the ending. For a film that's trying to send a message, that was a horrible one to send. (SPOILERS INCOMING) Making the woman who killed the abusers a villain while the main character is "good" so they choose not to kill the man who tortures kids and call the police instead, is incredibly stupid. People who kill serial abusers are NOT villains, and the police oftentimes does f*ck all in cases of abuse.
I didn't see her as a villain just because the main character didn't join her killing lol
IMO if we want good horror movies with LGBTQ+ thematic well done, we need LGBTQ+ directors and writers.
I agree, there's a reason why black horror movies are usually always done right by black creators
(Jordan Peele being an obvious example)
So far the only one I've seen a good LGBT horror character in was the movie Freaky (made by a gay director btw)
I hated this movie... Watched it for free and still feel like I got scammed.

I was so excited for this movie! I love horror, I love gay things, so this was SO up my alley! The psychological trauma and physical trauma are both dead on for what actually happens in conversion camps. The killers speech at the end was fitting too given that many of conversion camp survivors talk about being hallow and struggling with their identity afterwards. But I agree with this review because in the end it just wasn’t up to snuff! I wanted a good fun gay slasher SO BADLY! Especially when I got my whole life from Fear Street!
I wasn’t scared once bc I realize pretty early on that none of the people the audience is supposed to care about were ever in danger .. they didn’t even bother make us think there was any real danger 😭. It just didn’t do anything for me at all smh
Personally i've seen way worse movies, but i think people are looking at this one with a magnifying glass and are picking it appart more just cuz it's lgbt themed. If it wasn't an lgbt movie people wouldn't pick it appart as much and would see it just as an average slasher. However since there isn't much lgbt representation in horror i do think that they should have put in more effort to make it good. The characters were also too stereotypical for me, but the mc was a badass. Overall i didn't hate it (loved the title) and i feel as though they had some interesting ideas that they didn't fully develop so they ended up falling flat in the context of the movie. It kept me entertained and it was a pretty fun watch.
Always look forward for your videos!
I kinda look at it as a comedy horror than just a straight forward horror movie. The dialog sometimes had me laughing. I gave it a 2.5/5. It should have had more kills and the killer reveal was really mid same as the ending.
Straight forward : Horror.
I too don’t like sex scenes in horror movies. I’m sure there’s many others. I love watching horror movies with my family, and it’s always uncomfortable when a sex scene comes on when I’m with my parents. Can you make a list of the best and scariest horror movies that don’t include sex scenes? If you haven’t already? That would be an interesting, helpful video. Thank you.
Any movie that goes straight to Peacock is doomed. But the idea of a slasher movie taking place at a conversion camp would/could be pretty interesting. You can use slashers as a vehicle for the themes you want to present.
Thank you for the heads up on the spoiler and time
I feel kind of like the horror of the treatment of the kids is also a part of the horror of the movie for sure. But agree this was tonally all over the place.
i feel like if i'm gonna watch a movie set at conversion camp, the conversion torture is exactly what i'm signing up for though. like yes it's horrifying, but there's a sense of comfort and power knowing that stuff is illegal where i live now. i think if it weren't a major part of what makes the movie into a horror movie by being present, i'd be disappointed and wonder why they chose that setting at all if they weren't gonna make use of it.
well, you would if the movie is advertized that way. With a title that is literally a play on words involving the Slasher genre and being set at a summer (conversion) camp, you (or at least I) would definitely expect a classic Slasher experience, not psychological horror. Besides, I don't think she was trying to criticize that it was in it at all, but that it was in it so much that it felt exploitative of the reality of these camps.
Agree 💯!
I didn't think it was great but I didn't think it was all that bad. I wasn't bored and a couple times I almost cried. I didn't mind how it jumped around a little. It kept me engaged and entertained. And that's all I ask for in a movie. I don't care if it's corny, predictable, has plot holes, etc. Maybe I'm easily entertained 😜
The only time I really felt bad was the aversion therapy scene.
@@nectaroftheswans yeah that was bad. I rarely ever fast forward through parts of a movie unless I'm bored and I couldn't watch that.
Thank you for your review. Always looking forward to your analysis on movies. Please review Resurrection as well 🙏🙏🙏 ( p.s. BZ I can not understand it )
If people require non offensive horror maybe Goosebumps is more for them
Loving your content lately. I was wondering if you could do your favourites sort of video of the year so far in terms of best horror books, movie and tv shows of this year so far? I’ve seen your horror to come later in the year but would love a recap of what’s passed in case there are some undiscovered gems I’ve missed? Completely understand if you can’t do this cause if time and everything. No pressure or anything. Sending lots of love your way x Also been considering subscribing to shutter but is it worth it?
This movie feels like the most unself aware liberal parody slapped with another typical slasher movie.
Sounds homophobic
@@Hi-uv7nn nah. If anything it's trying hilariously hard to be exact opposite.
I usually agree with your takes most of the time, but I loved this! Just watched today and am going to rewatch very soon I’m queer and I thought it was pretty brilliant, overall. I also found the ending VERY satisfying. I won’t say more bc of spoilers. I hate it when people spoil movies in the comments.
Great review. I didn't want to assume the worst based on the title, but I was definitely skeptical...it's not as if mocking of the trans and nonbinary community isn't a common occurrence in our society.
All that said, I'm intrigued. I'm tempted to hate watch it out of curiosity
Also, I'd love to see you review Sandman. It's the most horrific (not like scary but still horror) Gaiman work I've seen. I'm curious what you thought of the horror aspects.
I liked the part where they all broke into song and dance mid conversation… that was terrifying!!
Can't wait for The prey review

Have you reviewed tusk?
I was super excited for this movie, but I was also super nervous. Sound like my nerves were warranted.
As soon as i listen to the plot AHS 1984 kicked in my mind and i was sceptical to say the least.
You could do quick movie reviews on your tiktok :) like on movies you don't want to do a full review on or on horror short films.
i’m not even gonna lie, i actually loved the movie except for the ending. i didn’t get bored at all. i think the characters are what makes it enjoyable for me at least. i think people may just be picking this one apart so intensely because of the LGBTQ+ theme and ppl want to make sure it’s perfect, representable, and not offensive. usually a lot of ppl are all for cheesy movies, idk whats so different about this one.
Yeah this movie really felt like they wanted to make a comedic drama or even a thriller and threw in the horror last minute. And I truly burst out laughing at the Pink musical scene with Bacon watching them so if there’s anything good i’ll say about it, They/Them was pretty funny at times
What about Gone in the Dark? That was crazy good!!!
LGBTQ+ people are already underrepresented in horror, deciding to make a movie and not take every effort to make sure its good is irresponsible. Now we have people saying the movie was always going to be bad for being woke.
I’d love to see a nursery tour or baby stuff haul 🖤

im non binary and I actually loved this movie because I finally recognized myself in some of the main characters
I knew it! I was like 45 minutes into the movie and looked for a movie review. Lol
unrelated question: where are your shelves from? 😂 they fit your dvds so well and i love it!
they’re the Atlantic media shelves! they’re not the best quality but they hold the weight of the DVDs just fine :)
Thank you for taking the time to reply!
One thing I will say now that I’ve finished watching the video and hearing the ending is that it is pretty predictable (and kind of frustrating) to have someone from the LGBTQ+ community be the bad guy. We’re always the bad guy to [some] people, even when we’re not. We’re always doing something wrong, even when we’re just existing. I understand the motivation but also, why would they put the other kids through an even more traumatic situation (conversion slasher camp lol). Thanks for the review as always!
You hit the nail on the head. There's a whole lot of nothing going on. Good review.
Pretty much agree with all your takes. I felt like most scenes lasted just a little too long.
This is Oscar Mayer worthy!
I was going to watch this, but I don't have Peacock and didn't want to subscribe to it. Good to know I'm not missing much!
Peacock is best it’s reality tv selection let’s be real lol
Not the trailer for They/Them playing before this video😂
I was excited because of the original tweet, but after this review... kind of a bummer
I honestly liked it. And had a lot of fun with it. I will say, I haaaaaaated the way things had to end all “Afternoon Special”. Like, no revenge isn’t making a person “just as bad”.
My only gripe was that one of my favorite characters (cuz he was cute to me lol) ended up being the villain.
Lol I knew you were gonna end the good there! 😂
Really disappointing, was looking forward to this one :(
Would love to hear you review the movie, What Josiah Saw. I just finished it and was blown away by it. I hadn’t seen anyone talking about it on social media and just happened to turn on Shudder tonight. First movie in months that I was genuinely scared by.

Isn't that a saying in America?

I simply don't know better.
Now everybody say 'IKEA surströmming!'
I saw this yesterday it was so bad I wanted to put it in 2x speed
i kinda liked it because of the motive of the killer but yeah it can be triggering but i did not think it was a bad movie
yes i am a gay guy myself
For me it just boiled down to being a very good Kevin bacon performance in a bad to meh movie. I do not think it did well at as a slasher nor did it do great at being a thriller, so mixing the two feels like it just fell apart.
I wanted more background on the family. Who own the camp
I agree with everything that has been said... But, I don't know why, I have a feeling that this film has hidden or poorly displayed talent. For me it deserves another chance. A *Slash/Them 2* with bugs fixed.
They/Them is not for everybody and it’s not meant to be. The beauty in this movie is how the horror isn’t in the slasher element, but in how these kids are treated.
How did I not know Anna chlumsky was in this?
the scariest part of this movie was when the dog died, which i 100% expected to happen anyway
They reveal of the killer felt very Scooby Doo.
It felt someone watched but im a cheerleader then decided to strip out the satire elements and replaced it with a few deaths and sex scenes
It was nice to hear your opinions on the movie to see it from your pov but I loved this movie more than any 2022 horror movie so far. I really want to put a review out to express why I love it and how others might
I'm a trans person and hated it. The only scary part was it being set in a conversion camp.
I was having trouble processing my thoughts on this one. You pretty much summed up everything I was thinking about it. The representation was great. I enjoyed the musical numbers, because it was part of the campiness, which I loved. However, like most of the stuff in this movie, it felt forced. Everything was just all over the place. The animal torture seriously pissed me off. I like what this movie tried to do. As a horror movie, it just didn't work. I like the Revenge aspect, that all the torturers got killed, but that's about it. Predictable is the one word that sums it up. I knew who the killer was basically from the beginning. What really bothers me is the trend of everyone labeling this as a "woke" movie. We deserve representation. It's about time! Unfortunately, it had to be in a sub-par movie like this.
I do not think it’s as bad as everyone says it is. There are way worse horror or slasher movies out there. As a queer person, I hope they make more lgbtq+ horror movies.
Go watch midnight kiss I thought it was pretty good and one of the kills in the movie oof was brutal.
@@Ghostface1998 I have seen it and did enjoy it 😀
I’m not sure if my first comment got deleted but I came up with this same concept like 6 months ago so probably after them but seeing this on IMDb was defeating because I wanted to write it lmao. It started with a joke I made “did you hear what the non-binary serial killer does to their victims? They slash them”
Mine wouldn’t have been in a conversion camp though. Mine was just a rough plot of a slasher with group of non-binary people being killed by a non-binary villain
I think you would enjoy "The Ranger" on shudder. It's not great but it's a fun cheesy classic: Young irresponsible friends go to cabin in woods then get killed off. It's very predictable and very simple but I really enjoyed the characters, and the music and I feel like it suits your preferred genres
I never excepted good from this, especially with how the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is treated in horror. I'll still try it but maybe in the background. Thanks for the review!
no film will ever top the predictive/accurate social commentary of Scream 4
when they broke out into song it entirely took me out. i didn’t like that most the horror was them being traumatized. i didn’t even finish the movie :(
Reason why I hate these kinds of movies is just knowing the reaction they'll get if they're not incredibly well made. Because I just know all the same people are going to point and say "See this is why you never put politics in your movies, tell a STORY and not politics!". When really they mostly mean "politics" as in any minority or LGBTQ group being included or talked about that isn't in a mocking way.
Well, glad it gave some people some work to do I guess. Earn that paycheck and all.
i just think that there is nothing that they could’ve done to make this movie good. i mean, what was the point to making the movie? what was the motivation behind having it set at a gay conversion camp? it just feels a little pointless while also using the struggles of my community as a selling point.
The point of the film seemed to be "representation" and the point of the conversion camp and having ONLY counselors die was clearly to ensure that the deaths would be non-controversial. It's why I don't like "representation". Once a character or characters are established as existing for "representation", you are very limited in what you can do with and to them, because everything is then interpreted as some kind of remark about the people they "represent".
god, there's a lot of things that was very wrong from that movie
*SPOILER*
* GIVE US THE GOOD KILLER, NOT THE KILLER WHO'S KILLING A RANDOM PERSON FROM THE OPENING
* IT WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER GIVING US THE FLASHBACKS FROM THE KILLER
* THE MAIN CHARACTER AND ALSO *THEY* HAIR ARE JUST....
* IT'S JUST LACK OF SCRIPTWRITING THAT THEY NEED TO DO, THE TITLE ARE CREATIVE THO
* I'M JUST HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED *LOL*
I did rate this movie a 6/10 I did go into it with low expectations but I actually found myself enjoy watching it and I think that has everything to do with the campers cast/characters and not the movie itself at all. I feel like the conversion camp spin wasn’t needed and it seemed like they were using this to be different because when you think about it the place being a conversion camp honestly didn’t matter or add anything until the last 5 maybe 10 minutes of the movie, when the killer was revealed (who was very predictable might I add). Change a few details and this could have been a pretty good summer camp slasher.
But the conversion camp is where the horror comes from. Yeah they could have made a ordinary camp slasher but with gay characters, but they instead made something better
Aww, the musical number was my favorite part! xD
I am pumped for Bodies Bodies Bodies. I'm a huge Lee Pace fan! :D
Isn’t this the same plot as the AHS season a few years ago 😂😂
lmao ur not wrong ahs 1984 has literally the same initial plot
Sleepaway Conversion Camp would have been a pretty clever premise for a slasher film, but it doesn't sound like that's what this is, unfortunately.
It was kinda boring. I wanted the kills to be more spread out. Maybe they also could have been one of the campers die to keep up tension. But the camper death could be an accident. Maybe something to do with the nurse not actually being a nurse so she can't help the camper. That would maybe add to the tension and her guilt at the end. IDK.
Is it just me or did that first hour happen then the last 30 minutes they were like alright we need sex and kills now
It sounds like someone saw the joke someone made on Tumblr in a Tumblr post compilation video and decided to make a movie out of it
For me, I really liked the corn.
I’m kinda scared to admit this but I really loved this movie. I kind of loved the jumping from tone and emotion. I was triggered during the movie so thank you for mentioning that (I’m gay). The animal scene was also rough and I nearly skipped. I really loved the musical scene, I can’t explain it but it felt nostalgic to me?
Also, maybe I’m thick but didn’t really see the ending coming 😂 ALSO only just realised the relevance of the woman at the beginning!
I don’t feel like this is a horror really but honestly, I’m sorry, I did like it 😂
Don’t apologize. I’m also gay and I loved it. 🤷🏼♂️
@@conductenor You’re the 2nd person I’ve seen online who liked it too! So glad I’m not the only one 😂

I thought I was the only person who wasn’t a fan of prey !
i actually liked it but it's def not a slasher it's more of a revenge movie
Kevin Bacon is usually one of my finest horror film actors; period. There was talk of him becoming the new Freddy Kruger, & with Robert Englund's blessing!
I think the horror movie business is very touch+go, with everyone wanting to make the next big thing that sets the standard. It's obvious that an idea, while looking good on paper, sometimes goes horribly southwards. 'The Darkness'(2016, using American-Indian mythology) is an example of a much better movie that he's in.
I actually do think it's done in kind of poor taste - even if no gay kids were killed. Gabriel's whole thing wasn't great. Also I think the first instance of learning Quei Tan's Alexandra's character is their dead name. Which I didn't love. Kinda not great all around. Like I get the people who are deadnaming her are horrible people, but the messaging is just weird.
I thought it was a fun watch. I thinks it’s more of a self aware dark comedy type movie with obvious social commentary. It was definitely lacking in the horror department but I still found some elements of the camp setting to be creepy.
I love ❤️ movie 🎥 Prey
