    “Is it scary or is it just scary because they’re old?” YES!! I do think the movie was trying to be meta about that choice though by examining how society treats the elderly not only as being undesirable but something to fear

    • @camillerahman6442
      @camillerahman6442 Před 2 lety +31

      It’s not really about them being old it’s about the way they were acting and how they went way overboard with the cheap prosthetics to make them look “scary” and to be honest anyone going around trying to rape people like that is gross

    • @lalareal180

      I didn’t get this at all from the film…. If anything I felt that the film dealt with aging and regret.. not about how society treats the elderly.. if anything, the group of people were respectful to the old couple..

    • @WrldTravl2
      @WrldTravl2 Před 2 lety +13

      @@zacgale4231 I’m not talking about how the movie crew interacted with the elderly home owners, I’m talking about how the movie intentionally handled the horror trope of the villain being elderly individuals. Regret and puritan culture are absolutely other layers of themes explored in the movie.

    This was one of those films that just hit all the right boxes for me. 70s aesthetic and pacing, stylish slasher, that artsy schlock feel. It promised me “one goddamn fucked up horror picture” and it delivered completely for me.

    This has probably been commented already but I actually think the “reliance” on gross out stuff with the old people is actually meant to ‘test’ the viewer. Like, Ti West is almost challenging us to not be grossed out. Earlier we see a bunch of young sexy people doing it and that was presumably fine-what does it say about us if it’s suddenly wrong when older folk do it too? One of my favorite threads the film dangles.

    I kind of had the impression that making the audience uncomfortable with some of the scenes with the old people was supposed to make us sort of realize that us being uncomfortable by their bodies was a part of a larger problem that had affected Pearl. It's like it was showing that we're uncomfortable with something that will inevitably happen to us in time and that it would be better if we accepted that life when it comes instead of seeing ourselves (and other older people) as disgusting.

    The scene where they performed Landslide to me was the underline, as it juxtaposed the sadness and envy of Pearl at this stage of her life, missing her own youth, with the self-reflection of the main characters, while also in a way foreshadowing the next sequence and subsequent horror to come. Watching it second time made it feel more powerful.

    I’ll tell you why you loved it. The underlying message of aging , fear of it, how our bodies betray us. The other, you are open minded enough to embrace a little discomfort, stepping outside the box. The scene where Pearl and her husband reconnect made me sad, because there were a couple of younger people behind me that were laughing. I wish young people knew that what they have now will pass, and quickly. Karma is a bitch, and they will look in the mirror one day and know that. Getting old is not for sissies. That said, no, I don’t think the use of the old couple was gratuitous. It showed how frustrated Pearl was to no longer have what she once did . I accepted and understood why they were that way. I loved this film, the soundtrack, and design and composition of every scene! The perfect storm!

There really wasn't many shots that were groundbreaking by any means (but the aerial shot of the pond really got me fidgeting in my chair lmao). But the lighting was done really well. The purposeful darkness upon Pearl's and Howard's faces really freaked me out, because I don't like not seeing something when I know it's there. I definitely liked it when I walked out, but, the more I thought and read about it, the more I realized how much I was thinking about this movie. It’s very powerful in that way, and it has stuck with me in a way that has made me love it. I was genuinely uncomfortable and having a rising heartbeat during the last half of the movie.
    Also, I felt a bit terrible because my GF could not open her eyes for the rest of the movie after the first fairly gruesome death scene. The dance that accompanied that death really freaked her out, so I felt guilty for bringing her along with me. Overall, I would give this an 8 or 9/10. Really impactful and unique

    Been waiting for your review since I saw the movie 🙌
    I personally did not like the movie at first but after kinda sitting and stewing on it I actually was able to appreciate it for what it is. As time goes on I find myself liking it more and more. I think it gives you an immediate uncomfortable vibe and it definitely got to me at first.

    • @charlene9489
      @charlene9489 Před 2 lety +2

      That's exactly how I felt about it! The vibe of the film in general was beautiful, but the scene that really got me was the "under the bed" scene. Disturbed, but I think that's what was intended.

    X is a killer movie that takes horror tropes that have been used time and time again and turns them on their head. Ti West is tipping the hat to Brian Depalma, Michael Mann and Tobe Hooper,to name a few, with its beautiful execution. West does not let the movie slowly burn the viewer this time as it keeps you on edge throughout with almost perfect pacing. This is definitely one of his best.

    So this was a super helpful review. I'm not a big fan of A24. I knew this one was going to blow up, but I am actually a Ti West fan. You're Next is one of my favorite movies. Erin is by FAR, my favorite final girl. This definitely makes me think I might have to give this one a shot. I'm similar in my feelings on over the top sex/nudity in horror movies. I will definitely have to take a chance on 'X'.

    Just saw the movie and absolutely loved it! And I'm usually not into slasher movies but this one has great characters that you actually care about that are played by great actors and I feel it made all the difference. I also really liked the aesthetic of the movie. As for your comment on ageism and if something is scary just because it's old people doing it, well for me anyway, I didn't think the killers were scary because they were old but because they were clearly deranged. As for the sex part, didn't think that was creepy at all. Old people have sex too and we will all end up there eventually so... All in all, would highly recommend this movie!

    Maxine and Pearl being played by Mia Goth blew my mind after the film. I was so confused until I realized that's who Pearl was! And I had a strong empathetic/emotional pull towards her near the beginning in those lonesome sadder scenes and I was shocked to watch it unfold. Brittany Snows character being so friendly and normal with Pearl also gave me a similar warm feeling, though at that point I was expecting what happened a lil bit

    I watched it last night, and I liked it. I wouldn't put it on the same level as Ari Aster, but I still enjoyed it. The gore didn't bother me because I've seen way worse; Pearl's sexual advances were more disturbing to me. One thing I really liked about X was the Easy Rider scene transitions where it jump cuts back and forth between scenes until the next scene officially begins.

    I loved this movie, the evolution of the camera girl (who i thought would be the final girl) was interesting to see as well as the breakdown of her bf after kicking off our kill count, and the old person sex scene was both touching and incredibly uncomfortable to watch with my grandparents in theaters, overall really enjoyed this flick
